Anyone up for a firefly-esque RP about a morally abiguous rag-tag crew of freelance profiteers trying to make thier way in a science fiction galaxy? Just say if you'd be up for it and then we can work out a proper plot and setting based on what we all think would be best.

Cool, a few more people and we can set up the OOC. For the setting I'm thinking a couple of hundreds of years after the development of nuclear fission which created a powerful and plentiful energy source, for the most part the technology is common place but there are parts of the galaxy where it is expensive and much sought after. Space travel is common but is far from instant FTL and warp jumps. Lazer weapons are used in ship combat but are very rarely seen as personal fire arms due to the amount of heat they produced, the same goes for shields. Humanity has spread out over the Milky Way but are yet to travel to other galaxies, while the planets close to earth are fluent are rich the more remote colonies still need a lot of work and struggle to get resources.
Just a few things about the universe we should decide as a group
1. Aliens, yes or no?
2. What is the political situation? Stable and peaceful with one government? A number of warring factions? Government against rebels? Post interstella war?
3. What sort of ship are we using? A modified trader vessel? A weapon less cargo friegther? A stolen battle cruiser we can't quite operate?
Also be thinking about the crew position you might go for.

1. No, or yes to a very minor degree. I think aliens might detract from the story line, especially if we play as rebels, or if we're dealing with a human threat.
2. Some form of war sounds the most interesting. Though, if we're pirates, it would be more challenging to play in a peaceful period, as the government would have more resources to focus on pirates.
3. A stolen battle cruiser would make for an interesting dynamic. But we would need to roleplay how we... "acquired".... said vessel.

1. Sure, though if we are playing a human dominated nation or sector they would most likely be a minority

Into it, but would this take place as if humans still started on earth, or is this the "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away..." Type deal? And would this be more space fantasy or cyberpunk-esque? I figure if it was based on Firefly it would have a dash of space fantasy but mostly be sort of cyberpunk.

It's going to be set in our galaxy, Earth an important and wealthy planet being where humans came from but it's not the most wealthy because there are bigger planets with more resources. It's not going to be high space fantasy with FTL and robots and the like, more Sci-fi but a more gritty and dirty version. Technology is very advanced but hard to come by and the most powerful tech isn't hand held.
1. How about we have aliens but they're not as advanced as humans, one or two races that were discovered and are now treated as second class citizens by most and slaves by some.
2. Perhaps we can set it during a civil war between the central planetary government and a large number of outer planet rebels. Our crew will be neutral to begin with and simply be trying to make a profit from either side.
3. Keep in mind we're going to be a relatively small crew so a warship isn't very practical, though it could be interesting as we struggle to move it.

Sounds good. I've always been on the look out for an RP based around a crew of a ship :) pirates only make things more fun hehe.
When talking about galaxy based RP's aliens close to how Mass Effect does it seems only to increase the reality of the setting. Not everyone will be 100% earth born humans, some may be born on other planets and have slight changes. However five armed monsters that can only breath in the dust from the planet zortox might be impractical ^^
I would say something like an American Dad fish that can talk but has to live in a mechanical suit that helps it be human (like the smoke guy from hellboy) wouldn't be a bad addition. But I feel any alien races need to have a nice written lore to make them feel believable. It would be boring to have 9 different beings on a ship and neither even know where any are from or know their customs. ^^

Well, one possibility is for the crew to find some sort of advanced alien starship leftover from some extinct alien race. Maybe they are conscripts sent aboard to investigate and the ship, seeing a threat to itself, instead deactivates their bomb collars or bomb implants. (Those of you who are science fiction fans will recognize this premise)
Maybe they are a bunch of pirates and get shot down by the authorities and land before some sort of ancient alien temple which houses the starship inside?
You might also want to give some thought to psionic abilities, cybernetics, bionics, weapons technology and the like.

I feel like this was somewhat inspired by a certain Marvel movie that came out this weekend. Not that I am complaining.

Actually I've had the idea for a long while but I think the movie's going to drum up some interest. Happy accidents.

I think there should definately be aliens as for what types i think they should be somewhat regulated and if there where i think they should obviously not be the friendliess (i think i would like to see it as warhammer esque with most of the aliens being enemies of each other and of the humans but with some limited co-operation between them depending on the race

I think a single government would do good but it would be at constant war with various alien factions and have to deal with internal problems which would make piracy a much more realistic occupation as hey the government is busy as shit our homes are ravaged by war why the hell not get onboard a ship and fly around doing piratical things better than sitting around and being drawn into the wars.

A stolen battle cruiser we can't quite operate? i say we should be a military vessel whom mutined against their capatain it would ass extra stress fromt he government to hunt us down and give us a solid backstory and a reason as to why we have all these skills.
