(OOC: http://www.roleplayerguild.com/topics/80104-the-necromancers-curse/ooc

Thirty years ago, a great war erupted between the many races on planet Asteria. A bloody battle on both sides that was dragged out for a few years before an almost immediate peace happened overnight. The cause was a massive blast of black magical energy from the north. A necromancer who refers to herself as Lady Vivian unleashed a primal and forbidden magic that ripped the magic from all beings over almost the entire continent to power a curse of monumental proportions. Those with low magical abilities would lose their magic completely and become cursed by the lingering magic, others would find the magic had very jarring side effects. To make things worse, the power was used to raise a massive army of undead, enough to threaten all of civilization with seemingly every intent to destroy it. From this day on, every body would raise as undead within 48 hours.

Thirty years later, the truce remains and a valiant effort of all races has pushed back the undead to a more manageable state, the heaviest undead activity now in the north. 2 Cities have fallen (North of course) and have been converted into massive undead fortresses. Most races now live together in guarded settlements in an uneasy peace.

---

This RP will be about the merging of fantasy races in this situation. PC's will either be going into northern territories to try and scout and figure out what Vivian is up to, or will simply trying to deal with the rather sudden melting pot of races and troublesome factions in the city

Stronger races, such as dragons have been hit hard. Being heavily magical, their very form has been sapped, shrinking the largest of dragons down to the size of a horse and greatly weakening them. In order to survive now, they must depend on other races. The are however one of the few races left with any real magical abilities, however culture and once powerful forms never gave their race much experience in war tactics or working together against foes. Also, as a race, dragons have never really had the population to fight an army at their new size. However, they still retain their natural armor-like scales, natural fire breath (Very effective against undead I will add), and have a moderate amount of magical ability left.

Humans are in a rather interesting state. Being able to take a dragon in a one on one fight is quite nice, but they now have to live without magic. Fortunately, their large numbers, standing army, and tactical war knowledge have allowed them to keep their cities under control while many other races have been forced to become refugees in them. Humans are well know for being very adaptable and inventive, so of course without magic and all these races to pull knowledge from their whole civilization has been advancing quite quickly. Powerful new weaponry for combating undead has already been developed. With a magical races help these can also be enchanted. Experimental firearms that use black powder are also starting to make rare appearances on the field.

Since it's 30 years, there are still many war veterans that don't exactly get along with eachother, but there's also a generation from each race that has been born and raised in the mixed society.

Note: I focus on dragons here, but I can work any desired fantasy race into the plot, as long as they're intelligent. They will of course be nerfed by the curse in some way. You

This should be enough to gauge interest, I'll go into deeper details on the various factions, cities, history, and undead in the ooc if I get some people interested in playing.

Within this setting, would I be able to play a character who was essentially a rogue, free-willed undead (likely a skeleton warrior)?

Interested with a few questions regarding the remaining level of magic.

Will characters with high levels of magic (wizards, clerics and such) retain any amount of their power?
Does divine magic (magic of the gods, clerics, paladins, etc) exist along side the arcane (wizards, sorcerers, etc)?
If so, does this magical famine apply to divine magic as well?

And lastly, what is your policy on playing non-humanoid races that have sentience (such as the dragons)?

(Apologies for auto corrects. On tablet since my laptop broke)

I could flex things around with the undead. Undead that existed before the curse would not be controlled by it. Also Vivian developed a ritual to bring free willed undead as generals. Main thing you have to worry about is much of the play may take place in civilized areas and the town guard is not going to give much thought before attacking undead under most situations

Some mages do exist still among humans. As long as the proper wards are maintained they can keep the curse from affecting them. Heavily magical races have their magical aability weakened. However, the art of enchanted weaponry has progressed rapidly via the now magicless races. Wands, artifacts, sspellcasting equipment, and such things are much more common now.

Divine magic I suppose would be unaffected as it would probably work against the curse if stolen by it. However the curse would probably weaken all holy type magic. Think of it as a radiation field of dark magic.

Lastly, non humanoid races are encouraged. Dragons included of course.

Very good! I might play a cleric then. I wouldn't mind dealing with the reduction of magic from the curse.

@Aurus Thanks for the consideration. I might be a wight in that case. A mortal mage, seduced and betrayed by Vivian (to steal his research, or raid his artifacts or something) arisen and sustained by his mage's will alongside the pain and fury at his betrayal.

Except that he soon finds his magic reduced to nothing. With no other option for revenge, he takes up the sword.

Maybe.

If that's cool.

In regards to dealing with civilized areas and such, he could keep himself hidden/cloaked under heavy armor or something. Kind of like the knight who never lifts his visor.

Just trying to think of a viable option here. I know it's cliche and impractical. But at the moment I can't think of any better options to disguise a walking skeleton.

I guess I'd be moderately interested. Can't say for sure if I'd be able to play (irl and all that), but I'd like to keep an eye on this.

Any word on how the game would play out? Freeform writing? Rules and numbers?

Or perhaps... ouija board combat? (I jest)

Also, thinking of a lizardfolk/naga kind of race.

Interested in playing some kind of a fantasy race, but not sure which one yet. Possibly a shapeshifter who lost their magic and got stuck in an undesired form because of it.

I'm also interested in playing an undead, either a vampire or lich perhaps. I could start in the city as someone else's ally or friend, or I could be a spy or a free-willed who is under attack by the guard.

Everything mentioned is fine, though i'd prefer a vampire over a lich as they can easily keep up appearances.

Combat will be freeform, most undead would be considered fodder class while generals and major undead would be considered npcs.

I'll finish that OOC soon.

Due to computer troubles the OOC will be a bit delayed. Sorry guys. New laptop is in the mail and I have a draft. Should go up shortly after I get it.

Not sure how warlords really differentiate from other magic users! But think of it this way. The curse sucks a significant amount of magic out of every spell cast. Simple spells take as much power as the most powerful of spells used to. Humans have developed a way around this through enchantment. It's safer to gather if the large amount of magic and store it into chargeable objects like wands and rings than try to fight the curse in the midst of combat. So in order to cast a spell now you must have enough magical ability to have not been drained completely be the curse, then you must summon up about four times the magic (and be able to control it all) that it would normally take to cast the spell. Finding other ways around it IC may happen.
