Once upon a time, during the deep winter in the realm of Asgard, a place was filled with wonder and magic. It was called the Moors, an ancient land that held the lives of the most wonderful of creatures. As the snow fell, there lived such a life who was as beautiful as a flower and graceful as a bird's wing. That life was Silena, and she was adored throughout the kingdom of Asgard. Her beauty became treasured to the realm and she was just as passionate as any being. She was admiring the falling snow one day until she saw a rose blooming in defiance of the cold. Reaching for it, she pricked her finger and three drops of blood fell. And because the red that seemed so alive against the white, she thought, if only I had a child as white as the snow, lips as red as the blood, hair as black as night, and all of the strength of a rose, she would have someone like her godfather, Loki.

A raven flew through the kingdom and out into a valley until it landed on a tree and cawed.

Her godfather, Loki, king of the Moors and the son of a fairy, was the last of her family until she was eventually married.

A man was sitting in the tree with huge wings. Wearing his black tunic, his short raven black hair blew in the wind as he was writing his signature on a piece of paper that he had. He makes his mark before rolling it and giving to the raven that sat next to him. He watched it take the paper and it flew off.

Loki looked after his god-daughter for years and he never left her out of his sight.

The raven flew through the kingdom until it went through an open window and landed on a small perch that Silena made him. It cawed to get Silena's attention.

Ravenna

Ravenna, also known as The Evil Queen, is a cruel witch and the once-tyrannical ruler of the kingdom of Asgard. Ravenna is an arrogant, power-hungry, and an extremely vain woman who is obsessed with her beauty. Despite her great age, she is rather childish in nature. She is shown to be highly manipulative and charming, able to seduce many men with her beauty or by promising them things they want to secure her own power. There have been extreme cases of her not controlling her anger and she certainly does not forgive failure easily. Ravenna is an extreme misandrist, having a hatred for men, believing that they are seeing women as only toys. The only man she had respect for was her brother.

Loki

Loki is the gentle, conlicted foster son of Maleficent, the on-and-off ruler of the Moors, and Princess Silena's godfather. Originally from the cold realm of Jotunheim, he was abandoned as a baby and was left to die at the Moors' border in the realm of Asgard. Found by the Moors' ruling fairy, Maleficent, Loki was raised and treated as a prince while under her wing, although he was never informed of his true heritage. Throughout his youth, Loki viewed Maleficent as a motherly figure. Although they are not related, he had a deep regard for her motherly love and affection, constantly worrying about her welfare. He was eager to follow Maleficent's footsteps to become the forest's protector. Throughout the years, Maleficent taught Loki the techniques of sorcery, resulting him to become an expert in the skill of magic. He respects the forest as well as its residents, developing a protective instinct for his home. By nature, Loki is mischievous and can be kind and caring to other individuals. As a novice to his self-esteem, he can become unaware to the dangers of his actions and beliefs. After the betrayal of Thor and the painful loss of Maleficent and Silena, his personality turned dark; Loki became enraged, deeply saddened, and fell into a state of despair.

Eric

Eric is the younger identical twin brother of Thor. He is a Huntsman who was once married to a young woman named Sara, but she died tragically many years ago. Ever since his wife's death, Eric's life has sadly fallen apart and her death may even be one of the reasons why he became a Huntsman. He is said to be one of the very few Asgardians who is brave enough to venture into and withstand the Moors.

Silena

Silena is the kind, thoughtful daughter of King Thor who was raised by the Warriors Three in the woods for her safety from Loki's curse. She is also known as the god-daughter of Loki and the wife of Balder. As an infant, she was cursed by Loki that on her sixteenth birthday, she would prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and fall into an eternal slumber-like death. Over the next sixteen years, she was secretly cared by Loki since the Warriors Three were incapable of doing so. She came across Loki many times while growing up and she came to believe that the wicked sorcerer is her fairy godfather. Even as a toddler, she had no fear of Loki at all. When Silena is fifteen, she and Loki developed a father-daughter relationship, but she remained unaware that Loki was the one who had cursed her as an infant. She wanted to stay in the Moors with him, but after learning the truth of her past and Loki's identity, she angrily returns to her father at the palace of Asgar, but the curse calls to her and pricks her finger on a spinning wheel, falling into her eternal death-like slumber. So sad and ashamed of what his hatred had brought upon her, Loki gave her a fatherly goodbye kiss on the forehead and just before he can walk away, Silena wakes up happy to see her Fairy Godfather, forgiving him of his apology. As they try to flee the palace, Silena tries to save Loki but he told her to run. Managing to free the wings of Maleficent from a locked cabinet and merge with Loki, she gave him his ability to fly for the first time. Silena allowed Loki to kill her deranged father once and for all. Silena was crowned queen of Asgard by Loki, reuniting their kingdoms as one. Watching her fairy godfather fly, this proves that Silena gave him determination and that she loved him with passion.

Maleficent

Maleficent is the fiercefully powerful winged fairy of the Moors as well as its leader. The foster mother of Loki, she is known as one of the fairest and wisest of creatures in the realm of Asgard. Her motherly role towards Loki gave him compassion as well as being loved dearly by him in return. As a strong and majestic woman, she is perfectly able to stay at Loki's side. When she found Loki as an infant at the border of the Moors, she accepted him as her own without any hesitation. Like Silena and Diaval, Maleficent was one of those people that Loki truly cared about, and her death devastated him. While she clearly attempts to believe in only the good in Loki, she is also intuitive and perceptive about other intentions. She describes her own skills and magic as the powers of hell.

She let him go before she walked over to the bed and sat on it. "Poor thing", she said to herself aloud. "From now on, he will have to learn his place here. Keep his attention away from Odin", she said as she thought of a plan.

A couple of years after Silena (Nell Tiger Free) was crowned queen of Asgard, she has been in contact with her winged godfather and king of the Moors, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), by sending him letters from the palace as well as visiting him in person. While admiring a rose blooming in the Moors during the winter, Silena pricks her finger on one of its thorns. Three drops of blood fall onto the snow-covered ground, and she wishes for a daughter as white as the snow, lips as red as blood, hair as black as a raven's wings, and a heart as strong and defiant as the rose, just like her godfather. Contacting Loki about her pregnancy, Loki gave her his greatest prayers for her child to be born.

Later, Silena shows Loki an injured Diaval (Sam Riley) in his raven form and Loki proceeds to heal him. He also tells Silena that she possessed real beauty as well as placing a hand to her heart. Loki's wish for Silena's child to be born was shattered as Silena died of a miscarriage along with the baby during its birth. Upon hearing the news from Diaval, Loki's heart fell in grief.

Weeks after her passing, Silena's husband, Balder (Edgar Ramirez), rescues a woman named Ravenna (Charlize Theron) from an invading Dark Army, a dark clan of demons. He eventually becomes enchanted with her beauty, and marries her. Ravenna, who is actually a powerful sorceress, kills him on their wedding night and takes control of the kingdom. After hearing the news of the husband's murder, Loki turns anxious for the kingdom until Ravenna's army raids the Moors and captures him. Sent to the high north tower of the palace, shirtless and chained, Loki has been painfully tortured for ten years as his wings shed to nothingness. As the years passed, his pain ascended as well as his physical appearance never aging, except for his extending hair.

Asgard and the Moors were ruined under Ravenna's rule as she periodically drains the youth from the kingdom's young women in order to maintain a youth spell. Ravenna learns from her Magic Mirror (Christopher Obi Ogugua) that the son of a certain fairy is destined to destroy her unless Ravenna consumes his heart, which will make her immortal. Ravenna orders her brother, Finn (Sam Spruell), to bring Loki to her and he begins a small chat with the sorcerer until Loki manages to escape the kingdom and into the Moors, where the magical forest has turned dark and weak ever since he was imprisoned. After years of no heir, the forest, now dark and weak, began to show his worst fears through hallucinations. Showered in fear, Loki passes out.

Meanwhile in Asgard, Ravenna makes a bargain with Eric the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth), a widower and a drunkard as well as the younger identical twin brother of the deceased King Thor. She promises him that if he captures Loki successfully, she would bring his loved one back to life in exchange. Accepting, Eric tracks him down to the Moors. Thinking it's Thor, Loki attacks him, and he tries to kill him. However, Eric manages to disarm him and proves that he doesn't have the same birth mark as his brother. While being Eric's hostage, Loki begs and tries to convince him that the queen plans to kill him, but the Huntsman brushes him off. When Finn catches up to them, Eric was just about to give up Loki until Finn reveals that Ravenna does not actually have the power to do what she promised. Betrayed, Eric fights his men while he lets Loki runs away.

While Loki continues running, the Huntsman covers his mouth and tells him to be quiet to prevent him from screaming. But as soon as his grip on Loki is released, the fae strikes him in the face and stands guard as he takes one of Eric's knives. Curious, Eric asks him why the queen would want him dead, but Loki tells the Huntsman that he should know. As soon as Eric begins to walk away, Loki tries to convince him that he doesn't want to be alone. After he promises to exchange him gold, Eric agrees to escort him to the castle of Balder's father, Duke Hammond (Vincent Regan), in the realm of Vanaheim. Before they leave, Loki remembers something and he runs to it. Running through the trees, he sees the temple of Maleficent destroyed, along with no body. Shocked and upset that his mother was gone from her resting place, Loki cries once again, but he eventually walks away from the temple with Eric.

As they continue walking, Loki's hallucinations catch up to him once again as Eric saves him from the branches of a tree that caught Loki's clothes. Telling him that the forest now targets his weakness, Eric rips off the dirty shirt that Loki was wearing and tosses to him a black cloak that was very similar to his old one. He then gives him a small knife before he shows him a move that he uses to defend himself. Loki hesitates, but he listens.

Later, they manage to reach the end of the Moors until Eric senses something that something wasn't right. They eventually get attacked by a troll and he tells the fae to run. Just before the Huntsman was going to finished off, Loki screams at the creature by charming it before it backs off. Eric tells him that he should have listened to him, but discovers that Loki never left because he would have died in the hands of the creature.

They eventually make their way to the edge of the realm, where there is a fishing village populated by female Asgardians who have disfigured themselves to save their own lives from Ravenna. While there, the Huntsman learns that Loki is the son of an evil fairy, where he thinks Loki is a sign of pure evil. He initially leaves him in the care of the women, but he soon returns to see the village being burned down by Finn's men. Loki and the Huntsman evade them and eventually flee to the realm of Alfheim, a land shrouded with the beauty of nature and populated with fairy-like spirits. They meet a band of eight dwarves, formed by Muir (Bob Hoskins), Beith (Ian McShane), Gort (Ray Winstone), Coll (Toby Jones), Duir (Eddie Marsan), Quert (Johnny Harris), Nion (Nick Frost), and Gus (Brian Gleeson). Muir perceives that Loki is the savior; the only person who can defeat Ravenna and end her reign.

Upon saying this, they travel through the fairy sanctuary until the dwarves stop at a large pond where Loki sees a familiar figure that he knows in the water. Shockingly, it's his mother, Maleficent (Angelina Jolie). After he touches the top of the water, the water stirs and the naked body of his mother rises from the water while a flock of ravens fly around her. Her hair becomes a black horned headress in a cloak of black along with a scepter. After witnessing this, Loki asks her how it's possible. She explains that it was Diaval that brought her the realm of Alfheim ever since the Moors turned dark and that he perished in the blast.

As they set up camp, Loki and Eric become smitten with each other as Maleficent watches in the distance. The next morning, while the others were asleep, Loki is awakened by the fairies and follows them through the woods. He comes across a magnificent white stag that almost never shows itself. Maleficent, Eric, and the dwarves watch as the stag blesses him, according to Muir, who also says that he is life itself and that he will heal the kingdom. Suddenly, an arrow pierces the stag's side and the group is attacked by Finn's men, resulting in Gus' death when he jumps in front of Loki to prevent an arrow from hitting him. The Huntsman kills Finn after learning that Finn abetted in the murder of his wife Sarah.

Reaching Vanaheim, halfway to the castle, Loki asks Maleficent why he freezes plants instead of healing them. She eventually gives up her hidden secret and eventually tells him that he was an abandoned baby who was adopted into her care. Heartbroken, he pushes away from her, betrayed. Despising her pleas, he retreats on his own until Ravenna disguises herself as Eric and tempts Loki into eating a poisoned apple, but is forced to flee when the real Huntsman and Maleficent discover her. Maleficent cradles her "son" and he slowly dies. Heartbroken, Maleficent cries for him at the spot.

Loki, whom they believe is dead, is taken to the Duke's castle. As Loki lies in repose, Maleficent watches over him until she professes her apology and that she did it for his own survival. She watches and listens to Eric profess his regret for not saving Loki, who reminds him of his loved one, and kisses him, breaking the spell. As night fell with everyone in bed, Loki awakens that night and walks into the room where Eric was sleeping. Seeing Loki alive and well, Eric learns about Loki's pain and suffering as well as learning about Silena's passing. He feels pity for him and Eric confesses his feelings with Loki returning his own feelings until the friendship turned into something far more precious that night.

Hours later that night, Loki walks into the courtyard, and rallies an army to mount a siege against Ravenna. The dwarves infiltrate the castle through the sewers and opens the gates, allowing the army inside. Loki and Maleficent make their way to the top of the castle tower and confront Ravenna, just as the huntsman and the duke's soldiers arrive. Ravenna causes the ceiling in the hall over the soldiers to turn into shards of sharp, black glass as they form into fighting monsters. While the soldiers are occupied, Loki and Maleficent fight the queen, but are overpowered. Ravenna was prepared to kill Loki and consume his heart by stabbing him with her dagger, but Maleficent steps in front of him and gets stabbed instead. Loki, shocked to witness this, is encouraged by Maleficent to keep fighting. Ravenna, once again, was about to kill him when, using the move that Eric taught him, Loki stabs her in the heart instead, causing Ravenna to wither and die.

Running to Maleficent and cradling her in his arms, he once again cries and immediately apologizes for his actions against her. She tells him its okay and she makes her final sigh. But as Loki cries loudly, he apologizes one more time and remembers that his healing powers could possibly help her. He puts his hand on her wound and tries to heal her. He eventually succeeds, but she doesn't awaken. He tells her of all the things she did for him and how much he loves her as her son until he kisses her on the forehead. Seconds later, she immediately awakens with a gasp. Relieved with tears of joy, he hugs her with love and the army turns victorious.

Asgard and the Moors once again enjoy peace and harmony as Maleficent earns back her wings and receives the throne of the Moors while Loki accepted his role as prince. In Asgard, Eric becomes crowned king while Loki and Maleficent are present. Many poignant looks ensue between Loki and Eric.

While Loki stands alone at his Home Tree on the Great Cliff, Eric approaches him and he embraces him. As they stood together, he kisses the fae before a raven in the distance flies close and ends the story in a screen of black.

Loki made a narrowing look with his eyes that's a sign for the three to be quiet. Looking back at Silena, he lifted the crown over her head before he gently and carefully placed it on her head. "Our kingdoms have been unified", he said to Silena and took her hand gently in his own. Looking to the people of Asgard, he declared, "You have your queen!", the crowd cheered for Silena's clarity.

So you see, the story is not quite as you were told, and I should know, for I was the one they called the beauty of balance.

The people of Asgard bow to Silena, including Balder who joined them, he smiles at her and bows before her.

In the end, my kingdom was united not by a hero or a villain, as legend had predicted, but by one who was both hero and villain. And he was my godfather, my guardian, the son of Maleficent. His name was Loki

Loki spreads his wings and takes off flying out of the palace with Diaval, in his bird form, following as the flew into the clouds and high over the Kingdom and into the sunset.
