Ash was trying to warn gregar of these guys being untrustworthy without actually them noticing. So he did the posturing about his mother (which, frankly, being a whore, nobody would've known about). Ash is also playing with him being a familiar face to them so the likelihood of him talking well about them is credible. But Amber's speech might seem more fishy than Ash, even. They might have recognized her too, given how much they stared at her. And then Jovan raises his hand, accuses them of bullshit and undoes ash effort to try and lull the mercs into a false sensation of security while at the same time warning gregar.

Edit: Pretty much what @Partisan said.

Highlighting the part where I said it.

Atomic no offense just Jovan is that way. He's refraining from being a real pain since he just got there is tired.

None taken. Its just that ash has shitty luck. He tries to go for a bounty? Blizzard. Tries to not meet gregar? Gregar calls for him. Is offered an arrangement? People appear to have audiences. Tries to warn Gregar? Others make it moot.

Its rather funny if you ask me. I wasnt trying to criticise your post, merely noting the streak of luck he seems to have.
PFFF
LETS GO TO DIDNEY WORL, I MEAN SUNDEY LAN

Edited the bit to make it a bit more noticeable.
Oh great, Ash tried to keep it hidden in his words, but now a fight will break out surely. In front of some tribesmen who already were waiting to stir up trouble.

Ash lucks keeps spinning.
Sigma stood still, a serious frown in her face. And there was he, the XO, Lorenzo, with a sweet, delicious sundae. Sundae. Sundae...

WELCOME TO SUNDAE LAND!
The big whipped cream mound felt squishy to the touch. Sigma took a scoop out of it and stuffed it in her mouth as she then entered the wafer boat on the liquid chocolate river... The cherry sun was shining brightly, and flocks of caramel nut birds squawked...

Focus, Sigma! The pilot managed to get a grip forcefully. She was drooling out of her mouth. How unbecoming of her. Quickly wiping her sleeve, she noticed Elora trembling before Lorenzo's harsh words. She had known she was as squittish as a squirrel, and this situation wasn't really helping. Although, it all had been her idea, so it was her own fault, rather than Elora's. She nevertheless reached for Elora's shoulder, and gave her a tap. Perhaps this kind of physical contact would help her? She wasn't sure.

After chewing assorted pilots, it was finally Sigma's turn. Having been used to chewing, she took it in stride, placing a hand in his chin while he did so. She disregarded the amusement and veiled condescendence of Lorenzo to try and figure out what he was saying. What did I do wrong? Sure, my plans came to ash and I decided to throw the battle at some point to earn some comrades, but this jerk's hinting, that somehow, my foundations were wrong. Perhaps maybe I should've just used the fellow pilots and throw their lives for achieving a goal? I don't know. I really need to rethink and undo all the steps I've made up until this point." Sigma breathed deep.

I still need to bake the cake I promised though. Her eyes wandered to the Lt for the briefest of moment. Perhaps I should try inviting her too? Because Lorenzo is a no go in this case.

Sigma stood still and composed, and then raised her hand. "What was the fatal flaw in the foundations of my reasoning?"
...um, thanks for blowing our cover, Amber. :(
Ash tapped his foot somewhat. He was still there, standing tall, waiting for his cue to answer to Gregar. And then, the doors opened to receive three people of mercenary companies. Ash knew those three well- they were not the sort of people you usually trusted to do something, for very specific reasons. While their names sounded eerie and impressive, truth to be told those companies usually had to fight for the scraps of bigger ones, just like the former company of the whoreson, The Black Company. Ladykiller, the blonde commander; Hamstring, the old geezer and Weasel, the crude-looking leader of the Hillmen. They all liked to try and be shrewd and cunning, but truth to be told, they were usually outsmarted by bigger thinkers. The three of them surely had heard of the war... but they were smart enough to not try and fight for the Whitelands. They were up to something.

Ash could feel the stares of some. Some were condemning gazes, some rivalry ones, and some were plainly stares in awe, from the most impresionable of the file and rank that had accompanied those three. So he had been recognized. He had to be deceptive if he were to pass a message about their true nature. Truth to be told, Gregar's offer for knighthood was well worth telling the true rotten nature of them.

But how? Gregar asked people to speak up. But obviously he couldn't say they all were liars and cheaters from the get go. So he tried something... different. He raised his voice.

"Pardon me, m'lord, but I, Ash the Knightslayer, of the Black Company, can attest the truthfulness of these men. I swear upon my mother's life that these men are to be trusted."

Of course, for all people who had been and listened to Ash tale, they'd have realized what this meant... for Ash was visiting his mother's gravestone earlier. He did a final small nod to the duke, and waited for the resolution. Perhaps his blade would be needed.
Meh, Ash assumed they were tribals with a chieftain. I'm glad it wasn't too far off the mark.
