Current I know I said I'd be back tonight but it turns out I have a lot of post-vacation life stuff to catch up on. Apologies to everyone waiting on a reply--I'll get them out before the end of the week!

Will be out of town from tomorrow until Monday--going to go try and through my threads tonight and update what I can, but after that will likely be silent for a few days.

May I inquire as to the reasoning behind this strong preference?

A few reasons. First, it's just the convention in tabletop gaming, and what I'm used to--one person at the table, one character. Second, I'd prefer this to be a "small group" game; if everyone is allowed to have two or more active characters, that shoots us past the five-character limit I mentioned when we started. Third, for your character in particular, part of the reason I was comfortable okaying the Xeno ability was because of the balance of him not being able to do anything not directly related to sniping. The abilities are very powerful, but the conflict of him needing to rely on his teammates for everything else--or choose to break his own moral code and suffer the consequences--is interesting. But if you can just switch out to a different character then that's suddenly much less of a drawback--maybe not strictly from a character perspective, but definitely from a player perspective.
Does that mean we will only be able to switch between different characters when the active one becomes lost?

I'm going to say yes--at the very least, I'd strongly prefer it to be a major thing when people change characters, rather than switching them out per mission or to suit the situation.

Since I'm probably gonna be using him more than Ijin during the hand off to the Knives, I've made a character sheet for Jor'eth.

Whoa, let's back up a bit. I'm fine if y'all want to establish other characters as members of the crew that y'all can take over if your character is lost for whatever reason, but let's keep it to one active/statted character per person.
Ope, missed that, will use it going forward o7
Allyn has rolled a 7 to Notice.

He attemps to say something snappy when he answers the phone, but all he can manage is a mumbled greeting. That doesn't dissuade Marcus, though--as the old man begins to ramble, Allyn fumbles with his coat pockets until he finds a dog-eared notepad and pen. He continues to make "mmm" and "mmm-hmm" noises as he jots down the details.

- Marcus = gravetender
- Needs sub. keeper; 'ext. circumstances'?
- Usual sub. (who?) not avail.
- Tonight
- $2k cash???

He underlines that last item a couple more times, letting silence fill the line. That's... a lot of money.

On the one hand, the whole situation strikes him as suspicious. He hasn't exactly made himself popular in town over the last few months; the locals haven't run him out or anything, but no one is tripping over themselves to invite him to their house for dinner--or hire him for part-time work.

On the other hand, this is about the most anyone has reached out to him since he came to town and started asking questions. Even if Marcus doesn't know anything interesting, it couldn't hurt to improve his relationship with someone who's been here for over forty years. (And, frankly, his inability to find anything intersting to report on so far hasn't helped his viewership numbers--$2,000 cash would be a nice cushion all on its own.)

"Well, Marcus," he finally responds, "I'm interested. But why me?" It's a fair enough question, he figures.
EDIT: whoops

anyway, that's fine by me on both counts!
@Guardian Angel Haruki - the mirror doesn't reflect Rearden's expression, but does it still reflect everything else--e.g. her movement, the background?

BRP Jose Rizal - 12/25/2022, 5:03, UTC+8

Mikey glanced up at Griff, just briefly. She couldn't see so much as sense his uncertainty, but it didn't worry her. Whatever doubts he had about his ability to act when the chips were down, she didn't share them.

The corner of her mouth did curl up at one corner as his stance shifted to mirror hers. Square up, big guy. The grin faded, by degrees. This fight's gonna make that little scuffle at the refugee camp look like a playground scrap.

She focused her attention back on the Admiral. "Alrighty then. We hang out on board the Jose Rizal until the fleets meet. The PRC Arms Masters--preferably just Cao Bao--should make their presence known on the Guandong, either as part of their own operations or just to spring a trap on us. That's fine on our side, because we're half-expecting them to do it anyway, and whoever else they want to throw at us is almost as good a target anyway." She paused, frowning. "Sounds simple when you put it like that. Uh, admiral."

She glanced over at Callie. The other American on the task force was obviously more than competent, but Mikey had to admit that the degree to which the plan rested on her powers made her nervous. If Callie was taken out--or even just forced to retreat separately... Well, Mikey was at least somewhat confident she could get out. Cristina probably could, as well. But what about the soldiers they'd bring with them? What about Henri, or Nil--or Griff?

She chewed on her lip. No reason to say anything at the moment. After all, she didn't have a better plan--she would just have to make sure this one worked.
Allyn shuffles past the bulletin board. The island may be just starting to wake, but he has been up for hours. His teeth are furry with coffee and smoke, and even as he makes his way down the picturesque main drag, he pulls a crumpled, handrolled cigarette from behind his ear and lights it with a cheap Bic. (He doesn't remember putting it there, but a surprise smoke is one of the few things in life he doesn't question.)

He takes a long drag, steadily eyeing the "No Smoking Within 25 Feet" sign plastered on the pub's front window from about ten feet away. Right now the expression is more tired than annoyed; a tenth cup of coffee is going to be prerequisite to his usual levels of disdain for signs, regulations, and directives of all kinds. He could have it at the little studio apartment he has here in town, but he has it in his head that a change of scenery is just the thing to get his punch-drunk brain working again.

He doesn't have to wait long; after a minute, the [OPEN] sign in the window flickers to life. Allyn pinches the cherry onto the sidewalk, rubs it out with the toe of his boot, and puts the half-smoked cigarette back behind his ear before he heads inside.

The bells chime as he walks in the door. He has already staked out his preferred spot, and engages in the age-old ritual of dibs, using a bag half-bursting with loose papers as his implement and token. To the waitstaff, he makes a series of noises that they have learned to interpret as an order for coffee--cream, no sugar--then crumples into the seat.

His eyes are bloodshot, but tired as he is they still bounce from point to point in the little dining room, as if it would take yet more effort to keep them still. His brain is the same way.

Someone took one of the slips on the flyer. The realization comes belatedly. Maybe someone here is finally willing to talk to me. The dark, roasty smell of brewing coffee hits his nose, and he unlimbers in his seat, spine popping. Or maybe some of the kids are getting bored.

Character Sheet

Age: 24
Gender: M

Appearance:

Allyn is a thin, tallish man, though the habitual slouch in his posture makes it hard to tell. His features are fair and his face is, like the rest of him, long and gaunt; curly brown hair, clean but unbrushed, hangs down to his chin. His eyes--the same chestnut color as his hair--are large and inquisitive, darting around with an energy that is at odds with the dark circles they are nested in.

His everyday outfit consists of a plain cotton t-shirt, covered by a ratty military surplus overcoat. Cheap blue-jeans with patched knees, a pair of old boots, and a canvas shoulder bag complete the ensemble.

Backstory:

Allyn had a relatively normal childhood that he did not care for at all. Having always been a curious sort, he found himself asking questions the adults around him never had satisfactory answers for. Though his parents were generally supportive, he quickly became disillusioned both with them and with the normal life everyone around him expected him to live--and as he fell into a rabbit hole of underground discussion boards and research, that disillusionment only deepened.

This all reached a head in college--in his sophomore year he dropped out, severed all ties with his previous life, and decided to travel the country seeking answers for the questions he thought no one else was asking. His Youtube channel/blog, "All In Investigations", has a small following among conspiracists and people with marginal political opinions, and mostly keeps him in instant ramen.

For the last six months, he has been trying to get to break the "big story" he suspects lies below the otherwise peaceful facade of Autumn Island. Unfortunately, it seems like he may get more than he bargained for...
