I think if I get down there I'd want to see the swamps and the battlefield at some point. Not much of a drinker so the French Quarter would run out of steam for me I am sure.

I went on a river boat tour where we passed some the of the battle fields last I was there, no time to see the battlefields themselves by being there; I don't think my dad and stepmom very much cared.

I did go on a air boat tour of the bayous though. By circumstance I got to sit up alongside our air boat captain and he helped point out shit for me to take pictures of.

Per the French Quarter, there's more than beer there. There's a lot of good restaurants; might be pricey though. But there's maybe only so much you can eat. All the same, the French Market is a cozy site to walk through and the river board-walk deal is right there, you also have Jackson Square and all the sites and sounds (artists hang up paintings and sell them right out off of the park's fence). And as something of an old architecture buff there's all the awesome as hell 18th and 19th century architecture dominate in that area (The French Quarter is also one of the few - if not the only last I checked - places in the city where the old French laws on building height remains: nothing higher than the local church/cathedral).

You could also always people watch too. And even if walking bar to bar for even a light-beer lets you do some people watching while enjoying the aesthetic.

There's also a big chance you can sit on a free concert and when I was down there Jack Daniels was holding a concert out back of the old Mint building (Across from the hotel I and my stepmom and dad were staying at). Though you needed a reservation to get into the gated area you can still stand at, lean against, and watch through the generous iron fence the concert. That there defined my fucking experience in NOLA, and thinking back to it makes me really, really want to go back.

And passed the French Quarter in the Commercial District there's a casino and on the edge between the two the aquarium, which is cool as fuck (though when I went through it was a rushed visit, shame).

Fuck I wanna go back to N'awla.

Mardi gras done been did.

Still doesn't devalue the city as a whole. In fact I would argue that now would be the best time to visit NOLA.

With the crowds so thin you'd have a much more intimate time with the city as opposed to being packed in shoulder-to-shoulder crowds of drunk New Jerseans and probably getting your body whetted with piss and drunk vomit. Though if you were to go to the city around that time I would hazard the Cajun carnivals in the bayous themselves would be better for authenticity's sake; provided you can also maybe master the art of blendin' in.

So long as you're not there in the heat of summer of course, in that even sleep all day and go out at night but only the populated areas of the French Quarter are the only place(s) that'd be advised to visit.
