Ilan was laying out some medicine and supplies for both Fintan and the human fighter. He gathered up Fintans medicine and placed them in a bag. He hopped of the cart, keeping an eye on the human and proceeded to kneel down next to the unconscious farmer. By some sort of miracle none of them got injured during the explosion. His sensitive ears however did feel like they were bleeding on the inside. He looked at the demi humans face and his eyes scanned over the rest of his body, there weren´t any great injuries. Just some scrapes from being dragged over the dirt road. He´d packed some cooling salves and wrappings for that. The wrists which the human suspected may have been broken looked and felt fine. Ilan didn´t feel any strange dislocated bones or dents around the wrists of Fintan. It filled him with guilt to leave him like this. The human needed his help more. It wasn´t safe for him here, especially not after what the Lich King had offered to the people of Avalia.

When the human returned Ilan convinced him to lay down on the straw, which he had spread evenly into a makeshift mattress of sorts. He wordlessly tied a piece of cloth around the mans arm, so he could cradle it against his chest. He wore the sling like a hero out of war, which he may have well been. Ilan didn´t want to strain him any further by making him talk.

"We'll go back to my city, there are infirmaries there, we'll be better off there."

On the way back to Roshmi a million thoughts ran through the mind of the young faun. The most pressing one what he was going to do next. If he stayed with this man he would be drawn into this war, but if he didn't.....
The war was coming and no matter how hard everyone tried to avoid it, soon it would be on the doorstep. Ilan just hoped the humans were like the ones in the stories. A group of heroes who would band together and defeat the evil king. He could help them by saving the human he found.

The roads began to look familiar, they were leading back to the city. Ilan realized he hadn't been all that far from it. Traveling on foot was awfully slow. He felt hopeful, there would be demi humans in Roshmi willing to help. He knew a few people at a particular infirmary. One where he used to drop off medicine he prepared together with his grandmother. They would be safe there, for the time being. Once the city borders were in view Ilan urged the horse to go faster. The quietness of the human worried him. He was already in bad shape when they met and he was only getting worse.

Flash forward

Ilan was pacing back and forth at the entrance of the infirmary, not knowing what to do with himself. He'd stayed by the bedside of the human until he fell into a deep sleep. The healers said he needed rest and Ilan agreed wholeheartedly. He wasn't as an accomplished healer as the ones at the infirmary, but even he knew what their grim faces meant. The scent of cleansing herbs wafted out of the windows. It was a painfully familiar scent. A kind of herb they only used when someone was clinging onto life. He hated himself for thinking it, but he hoped it was not the human. It would be useless to stand here and wait around, worrying himself. He was in the best hands. Ilan adjusted his bag and straightened his clothes. A stroll through the market would do him well. A worried frown refused to leave his features as he walked past several stands. It would be a while before they could leave. Ilan made some mental notes on the things he would need for the journey, hopefully he could afford all of it.

If Ilan trusted the words of the human fighter, the contraption from which he appeared would soon explode into countless pieces. An event neither the human, Ilan and....by the Gods! Fintan was unable to move himself! If the explosion was as great as the human claimed even a man as sturdy as Fintan would not survive. Alas Ilan did not have the muscle to move the sleeping bull of a man. Before he could despair however, there was a solution. Tying him to the cart. There was no more time to think things through. Ilan retrieved a length of rope from his bag and hopped of the cart. He fastened the rope around the wrists of Fintan, making a knot at a remarkable pace. If he wasn't in mortal danger he may have been proud. Tying knots was never his forte.

The cart was close by and Ilan tied the other ends to the wooden frame at the back. This would probably hurt, but at least Fintan would be alive to feel his raw back. Ilan hadn't figured out any plan, aside from getting away from the metal contraption as fast as he could. So he urged the horse to speed away from the scene.

"Come one let's go!!"

Someone jumped out of the metal contraption, making even Fintan jump in surprise. Ilan was already halfway back at the cart and wagon before turning around to see it wasn´t a monster but a....an elf, without the....pointed ears?
Fintan the farmer was smarter than he appeared to be, and lowered his weapon at the sight of the scrawny human. In his time he'd never seen one before. So this was what they looked like? They didn't look much different to demi humans, save for the animal parts. Out of all the species in Avalia, demi humans were most closely related to humans. He listened to his nonsense ramblings, but soon found himself thinking of a lot of other things, mainly the benefit of finding a human alive.

Humans were the key to survive the coming war, he could continue to plow his fields and wait to be attacked. Or he could take matters into his own hands, making sure he would survive the reign of the Lich King. Ilan had returned at his side, the young faun watching the human with wide eyes. The moment Ilan had spotted the large metal construction he knew something like this would probably happen. It was a foreign object in Avalia, it just also happened to contain a human. Ilan studied the young man from a safe distance. He looked worse for wear. He seemed to be some kind of soldier, wearing protective clothing of the most odd making. Ilan didn't understand what he was talking about. To his surprise however they did seem to speak the same language, he could comprehend the words.

Fintan motioned for Ilan to lean in so they could speak without the human overhearing. Ilan perked up his large ears to listen in.
"You heard what the Lich King said right?" Fintan started to explain. There was something in the tone of the farmers voice that did not sit right with Ilann. It had changed to something he could not quite describe, like he was about to say bad things. He looked up at the farmer, the man was not making eye contact as he spoke. All he was looking at was the human who had appeared from the metal tube. Ilan nodded and he continued.

"What if we take him to the Lich King? We would have enough amas to make sure we'll live through the coming war." He pointed at Ilan and himself.
"You and I, we are no warriors, you even less so than I." He was explaining the situation with a rational mindset, solid, some would say cold even. It was a survival of the fittest, just like in nature where only the strong survived. The weak were trampled. Ilan had a soft spot for the weak, as he himself wasn't the most formidable fighter, he liked to believe himself a champion of gentleness. Taking this weakened human to the Lich King, where he would undoubtedly reach a gruesome end was not what he wanted at all. Somewhere he still believed in the stories of the saviors of Avalia, the humans with the powers of nature.

Fintan did not wait for any sort of consent or like mindedness of Ilan, he simply made his way closer to the human. Albeit unarmed he was still a good two heads taller, muscled and perfectly capable of grabbing the scrawny young man. He made it appear like he wanted to help him, kneeling beside the injured man. He offered him a hand and when he took it the farmer forcefully grabbed his arm and started to pull him towards the cart and wagon.

"Let's just move over here for a second." Fintan said gruffly, not waiting for a yes or no.

Ilan watched in horror and besides his better judgment he went over to Fintan pulling on his other arm.

"No...Fintan, you can't!"
Ilan sounded panicked as he tried to reason with the farmer. Though he seemed to be beyond reasoning, the prospect of a large sum of amas had robbed the farmer of any sort of decency or common sense. He pushed Ilan aside with such force it sent the faun tumbling down the dirt road, making a summer sault. The shove knocked the air out of Ilan's body, and the lyre on his back dug painfully into his skin. When he was upright again he struggled to stand, breathing painfully. He had no breath to talk anymore. What was he going to do now...?

Fintan was getting out of control. The human was hurt, he couldn't roughhouse him like that, it would make things worse. Ilan walked quietly towards the pair, trying to make eye contact with the human. When their eyes met Ilan gestured for him to cover his ears, covering his own large ears with his hands, pointing at the human fighter to do the same. Hopefully he would understand. With a nervous breath Ilan took off the strap which held the lyre against his back. I am sorry I have to do this...

He took the instrument in his hands, his fingers brushing past the magical engravings on its spine, and he started to play. A lullaby, sweet and soft like dandelions floating in the air. The sound carried through the wind reaching a surprised Fintan who turned around just in time to see Ilan playing the lyre with regretful eyes. The tall farmer slowly collapsed onto the dirt road, sound asleep. Ilan had to act quickly. He rushed over to the human.

"Are you okay?"
There was no time to explain what was going on. The magic of his lyre was only temporary and they needed to get away from here. Ilan sprinted to the cart, looking over his shoulder to make sure the human fighter was following him. When he reached the cart he started to push off some of the hay bundles, which were incredibly heavy. They needed to lose some weight so the horse would last longer.

"Come on! You have to help me move these"
Ilan called out. Fear was giving him an andrenaline rush, and he found strength he didn't know he had. He saved some of the bundles, so the horse could eat along the way. The basket of peaches he also kept, in case the human needed to eat. He threw a single peach around the spot where Fintan was laying on the ground. He jumped skillfully onto the front of the cart and took the reins, waiting for the human to catch up.

Fintan was well on his way to the Moonelf village, his unexpected traveling companion sitting contently between the hay of his cart. The farmer simply smiled, wondering to himself what this young faun was doing all by himself on the great roads of Avalia. On his back he saw a well crafted wooden lyre, perhaps he was an artisan of sorts, a music maker. The road was getting bumpy and once every while, the cart made a jump, causing Ilan to lose track of his weaving with a surprised squeal. It was getting to a point where weaving was getting too much of a hassle so he stopped. He'd already made one to store the peaches he gave to Fintan. The faun was about to strike up conversation with the kind farmer when an enormous skeletal illusion appeared in the once clear and peaceful skies. It was their unrighteous king Alkenroth.

Once he got over his initial fright he listened to the words of the Lich King with wide and fearful eyes. He could not believe what he was hearing. Humans in Avalia.....
The dreaded figure disappeared as soon as it was done with its message. Ilan's mind was reeling. What did this all mean? He knew that at any moment Avalia could fall into war. His grandmother always warned him, prepared him for the possibility of needing to one day fight for his life. Ilan just hoped a hero would rise somewhere, raise an army and save everyone, just like the storybooks. Humans were being hunted, how terrible. He'd never seen one before, and from the stories he gathered they could be both good or evil. But Ilan did know one thing, Alkenroth was the evil he knew existed. He had to be stopped somehow. If the Lich King wanted the humans gone, he was probably threatened by them. What other reason could there be?

Fintan had stopped the cart and looked over his shoulder checking to make sure Ilan was still there. The faun seemed to want to bolt at the first sign of danger.
"Are you alright..?" The farmer looked concerned, not just with the wellbeing of his companion, but also with the news they had just received. Ilan simply nodded, momentarily at a loss for words.

They continued onwards in silence, both demi humans not knowing what to say to one another. Each lost in their own thoughts. A little ways up ahead, something large and metal was blocking the road. Fintan pulled on the reins, stopping the cart.
"Hoo...there boy...easy now." The horse snorted in protest at being halted again. Fintan grabbed his sickle, it being the only sort of weapon he owned. He jumped off the cart and motioned at Ilan to stay still and be silent, lifting a finger towards his mouth and pointing at the large metal construction. Neither Fintan nor Ilan had ever seen something like this before.

Ilan nodded again, looking around anxiously. He was mapping out his escape routes, if he needed to run. He kept his eyes fixated on Fintans back, his hands clutching the straw nervously. The farmer tapped on the metal shell of the turret with the sickle. Nothing seemed to happen....

He gazed back at Ilan with a questioning look. Fintan scratched the back of his head, not really knowing what to do. It looked some sort of weapon, but he didn't get the feeling it was dangerous at this moment. Ilan had cautiously made his way over the Fintan, taking very careful, calculated steps. As Ilan got closer, he felt his stomach turn with nerves. He let out a soft sight, trying to calm himself.

"What....what is it?"
He asked, pointing at the turret cautiously.

Ilan was feeling refreshed after his short nap, and on his way out of the forest he gathered some medicinal plants to take with him on the road. It would probably be a while before he would see another forest, since he was going back on the road. At the edge of the forest he spotted a large tree with summer peaches. He squealed in delight and hastily made his way over there, forgetting all about the dirt roads stretching away from him. As he closed the distance he could smell the sweet aroma of the slightly flat sunset colored fruits. It made his heart jump for joy as he could easily eat his weight in these fruits, eating them for breakfast, lunch and desert. It was however always a challenge to get some, as he couldn't climb trees. He did however has his trusted slingshot. Standing at the foot of the tree, Ilan squinted his eyes to get a better look at te branches, trying to determine which one carried the ripest fruits. Those he could eat right away, he needed the less ripe ones to take with him on his travels.

He readied a stone in his slingshot and aimed at one of the branches, sticking out his tongue as he concentrated on his aim. With a grunt he flung a stone at the midsection of one of the branches, thick enough so it wouldn't break, but thin enough to tremble and send peaches falling down on the ground. The first attempt didn't do much, aside from ruffle the branch. A couple of leaves fell down but no fruit. He frowned and looked at his slingshot, as if it was to blame. He wasn't easily discouraged so he gave it another try. This time with success. Ilan kept it up until he had a drawstring bag filled up to the brim with peaches, it almost didn't close. After he was done he at one and made sure to plant the seed somewhere close to the tree, so another would hopefully grow.

After about an hour traveling on foot Ilan still hadn't seen any signs or directions and his bag was getting awfully heavy. He let out a groan and blew out a tired breath which puffed up his cheeks. Soon he was dragging his hooves over the dirt road, regretting his decision of carrying so much weight with him. He ate as many as he could, until his stomach started to feel weird that is. The sound of hooves in the distance caught his attention, it was too far away to see, but Ilan could tell it was coming from behind him. It became louder and he could make out a horse along with a cart full of what smelled like hay. The driver was wearing a hat and didn't seem to be armed in any way. Ilan lightened his step until the driver caught up to him.

"Good day there, young traveler!" The driver stopped his cart and drew up next to Ilan. The man seemed to be a farmer of sorts, he had tools to work the land stacked up behind him in between the bundles of hay. He took of his hat to reveal a set of horns, like that of a bull, hooves peeked out underneath his overalls. A cheery kind of fellow he greeted the faun with a cheerful smile.

"Where are you off to on this fine day?" He asked while picking some pieces of straw from his clothes, in an effort to look more presentable. Ilan smiled back relieved to see another demihuman.

"I am not sure where I'm going yet but....."
He weighed his options momentarily. The prospect of walking for another couple of hours wasn't really that appealing. He opened up the drawstring bag he was holding in his arms and showed his prized fruits to the farmer. The farmer raised his brows and inspected the wares.

"Are those......, summer peaches?" The bull demihuman said sounding surprised. Ilan figured the tree wasn't commonplace where the man was from. He put his hat back on to shield his eyes from the sun.

"They are!"
Ilan exclaimed proudly, smiling happily. The young faun pointed towards the back of the cart.
"If I can travel a couple of miles with you, you can have as many as you like. If you keep the seeds you can plant a whole orchard."

"Sounds like music to my ears young faun, hop on!"

Ilan handed the bag to the farmer and jumped onto the back of the cart, which was an easy feat for his deer legs.
"For a boy your size you sure can jump..." The farmer said, somewhat impressed by Ilans natural aptitude. He continued to introduce himself as Ilan made himself comfortable in the hay.
"I'm Fintan"

"Nice to meet you I'm Ilan Mu"
He said with a small smile. There was a familial kind of feeling to Fintan. He could tell he wasn't from here but he was still a farmer. The kind of people Ilan grew up with. Ilan gestured towards the bundles of hay.
"Can I use some to make a basket?"
He asked twisting a piece around his fingers.

"You go ahead kid, I've got enough to go around." Fintan said scratching the back of his head. There was sure to be a bunch he couldn't use, so really there was no harm in the kid using some. He might even make a buck selling some of the baskets. He sure as hell didn't know how to do it, let alone have the patience for it.

"Great! Thanks Fintan"
Ilan said, letting himself flop down on his back. The hay was itchy and dry. After a while of looking up at a mostly cloudless sky, trying to make out shapes he started on his first basket.

Mira

Mira was freed from the torment of her own mind by the unexpected kindness of a stranger. She was too fatiqued to attempt to hide her sadness, failing to manage even the slightest of smiles for the young man. Instead she opted to show her appreciation through her words, which she chose carefully. She didn't know what he meant by being a first timer, but came to learn he probably meant this being her first busride. When he handed her a handkerchief she again was touched by his kindness, so much so that tears trickled down her face quietly.

"Thank you..." Her tone was uneven and full of emotion. She dabbed at her cheeks with the handkerchief, noticing the embroidery when she lowered it. Little grey kittens with the letters J.C at the edge. Mira gathered her bearings and turned to him, shifting in her seat so she could make eye contact.

She registered his advice and kept it in the back of her mind. The one feature that stuck out the most to Mira was the paperboy's cap he was wearing. It suited him in a slightly clumsy, but charming kind of a way. The same kindness emitted from his brown slanted eyes. Mira did not feel like talking much, yet willed herself to do it anyway. To return his kind gesture.

"I must apologize, I am not having one of my best days." She began, finding strength the more she spoke.
"It's my first time on this bus yes, I got on very late because I wasn't sure where to go."

At last the edge of the forest was coming into view. It meant Ilan had only a small amount of ground left to cover. In his arms he carried what seemed to be a bundle of cloth. Soft cries mixed with the chirping of the early morning birds and the sighs of trees. The young faun had been woken up in the middle of the night by the rumbling earth, some sort of strange happenstance caused an earthquake. It had disturbed a nest of deer, of which he was now carrying a single fawn. For the life of him he could not find the parents or the other babies. He adjusted the weight of the animal in his arms, it was getting quite heavy after a while. The fawn protested, his cries intensifying. Ilan patted his head gently, the animal closed his eyes contently.

"Don't worry, we'll find your parents somewhere"

It wasn't likely to survive on its own. Ilan tried to come up with some sort of a plan, as the forest would soon change into plains and meadows. His otherwise carefree expression turned into a worried frown. He searched the trees for any sign of his kindred species. To his left, a little deeper into the forest he noticed a creek. It gave him an idea. He expertly darted through the foliage and bushes until he reached the shallow creek. The clear water ran through the forest like a small river.
I can't believe I didn't notice it before.
Granted he had been woken up in the middle of the night and found the fawn shortly after. He hadn't slept since then. His eyes felt heavy and his body sluggish. He walked up to the edge of the creek and flopped down onto the forest floor with a sigh.

"Pheww....."

He supressed a yawn and placed the bundle beside him on a bed of leaves with the greatest care. Ilan had tried to make the deer stand but to no avail, he suspected it had sprained one or multiple legs due to the earthquake. He produced a water skin from his messenger bag. It would be dangerous to have the deer sip from the water by itself, Ilan was afraid he would fall into the creek. No need to traumatize it any more. He filled it up to the brim and stored it inside his bag, taking out a second smaller one to give to the deer. Once it was full of clear and fresh water he held it to the animals mouth carefully, lilting it slightly so the water dripped out slowly. The fawn seemed to enjoy it as it cried everytime Ilan tried to take away the water skin.

He cupped his face in his hands, his elbows leaning on his knees. Jade eyes stared into the seemingly endless depths of the forest. Suddenly and with a start he picked up on the crushing of leaves and the breaking of thin branches on the forest floor. Of course the deer were drawn to the source of water! It didn't sound like they were too far away, but they were likely too afraid to approach. Ilan unwrapped the young fawn. It looked up at him with large brown eyes, crying softly. He bent down to kiss its head softly. A smile lit up his face.

"Your parents are coming!"

Of course Ilan wasn't sure it was a deer he heard and he knew perfectly well that leaving the deer behind would be the same as dropping him into the creek. That's why he hid between the shrubbery, to watch what would be coming. He readied his slingshot and took his lyre from his back. If it was something else he might need to "calm" it with his music. The fawn realized it was alone now and the cries intensified. It tugged at Ilan's heartstrings, but it was the only way for it be found. He leaned back against the base of the schrub and felt his eyes getting heavy again. Hopefully he wouldn't fall asl......
