I liked Kaneki, he didn't really start kicking ass until like....Half-way or damn near, he had to train and even still got his ass kicked.
Where as with other anime they get power-ups out the ass within their first battle, no training no nothing.
His development and conflict between his humanity and ghoul shiz was well done too....Poor guy v.v
