@lovely complex Niles and Zac were friends in the past.

I haven't discussed it much with anyone but there were talks of Niles and Genie being friends at one point as well.

In the present day I imagine Niles as one of the more distanced from the group

Personality:
Haughty: Despite being quite literally out of water, Nixie maintains the same attitude that she had in her own home surf. She carries herself to a higher standard and looks down on those who act in a substandard way - and that goes double for humans. Fellow kin she can sometimes make an exception for ("Beasts that frolic in the mud cannot be expected to be clean, after all") but humans displaying crude and poor attitudes have no excuse. She expects to be waited on or catered to and is quite particular about who she associates with. It never entered her mind that her attitude could be quite off putting.

Naive: The world underwater is quite different than the world on the ground. Despite her arrogantly regal status and attitude, Nixie is still quite clueless as to some of the more strange aspects of the above water culture. It's a point of embarrassment when she shows her lack of knowledge but her pride prevents her from realizing that she doesn't know nearly as much as she says she does.

Background:

With the rise and expansion of the humans it was only a matter of time before their sights were sent to the world underwater. Expansion, however, was not on the agenda but rather...sport. Humans had found the aquatic sorts to be something of a delicacy, or fun victims to toy with by catching and releasing them in unfamiliar waters. Nixie, however, saw little of this as she was fortunate enough to be the youngest daughter of the aquatic Bloom Dynasty. What started as an alliance of various aquatickin, sort of a united nations of sorts, became less and less 'varied' and more 'jellyfish manipulated their way into total control'. The Bloom Dynasty is on the outs, the last of a dying breed as more and more aquatic sorts either get taken to the surface or flee to deeper depths. Some, however, still maintain that the Bloom Dynasty is an institution that will protect the waters to the end.

Nixie was never the most popular, being known for her selfishness and the way she treated her retainers and servants (shocks from her tentacle strands that make up her hair were a daily occurance for those who annoyed Nixie); she was quite the spoiled cnidarian and constantly abused her position and 'untouchable' status. She figured that inheriting the Dynasty wouldn't be in her future so why not take advantage of her station while she could?

Unfortunately, after threats from hired help and the constant creeping encroachment of the humans, the King of the Dynasty came up with an idea to both save the Dynasty and teach Nixie some etiquette. Nixie was told she would be attending a surface Academy on a diplomatic mission. Nixie was not aware that this meant a school and the deception was not taken well. She has a hatred towards humans, especially those that consider seafood to be, well, food, and she's not above giving humans passing shocks from her hair.

Nixie has to make the most of a bad situation. Her attitude doesn't fly well on the surface and if she truly wishes to find a diplomatic solution to the fishing and pollution that plagues her home then that means putting aside her prejudices and upbringing. But old habits die hard, especially when they are being desperately clung to.
