That being said, a L A R G E Bugbear is definitely not something anyone wants to run into. Buggers are already surprisingly sneaky for their sizes; making them bigger just makes their stealth more startling.

In my Sunday real-world D&D games, I have an NPC monster in it who's a Bugbear. He wields a specialized pair of axes on chains, allowing him to swing them like whips; I also give him the PC Bugbear reach, so he's swinging his axes 15 feet of melee threat range. He's also a mounted warrior, riding a Dire Aurochs. So yeah, I have some measure of terrifying bugbear stories meself.

The foundational structure of Lady Hanabi's personality is conflict. Extreme conflict. Bound by Honor and Duty, but also by a Legacy now marred by failed rebellion and obligation to the peoples of Cinnabar Island, Lady Hanabi is someone perpetually upon a tightrope and constantly under scrutiny by the greater politics of the land. Her actions must be perfect lest they create further issue for her family name, and her imperial upbringing have made her an excellent diplomatic and political entity.

Summarily; she is charismatic, observant, cautious, and a natural leader. All the things a shogunate wants to cultivate, but keep on a leash. All the things her father was.

She is an artistic person at heart, and spiritual as well. Her swordplay, archery, spearwork, horsemanship, and courtly intrigues are all tinged by poetry and a dedication to strive for perfection. Her poetry itself is revealing of her personality in its quiet and subtle ways, and she will always make time to stop and make Poetry when able.

The Public Works of the Lady Hanabi Yasashi

The Short Backstory

A flame was struck. Rebellion. The island, Cinnabar, rising under the banner of the Hanabi clan; the flaming flower upon a bed of stars. The Lord, Hanabi Kenshin, was popular and fanatically followed by his supporters. His son, Hanabi Tomoya, was a rising duelist and newfound ace pokemon trainer. The peoples of Cinnabar had the aid of their neighboring clans- but it was not enough.

Clever battles, a tense betrayal, a last stand. Hanabi Kenshin fell. Hanabi Tomoya went into exile. Hanabi Yasashi, but a child, was left standing in her ancestral home atop the Volcano when the Shogunate forces made their move and captured her. The rebellion died that day, with the child-symbol of their leadership now a hostage of the Shogun. The lands were pacified, oppressed, and left to rebuild.

Rather than dismantle the Hanabi clan, however, the Shogunate decided to maintain it and keep the girl as a ward. Seeking to groom and educate her into a puppet Lord of the region. The Hanabi rebellion had only sparked the fervent heart of the Vermillion Prefecture; the Shogun was concerned with more uprisings following the martyr's example. Thus Hanabi Yasashi was kept alive; taught; trained; educated. She was indoctrinated into the life of Saffron Village.

Her only memory and symbol of home was the Ponyta permitted her by the shogun; the foal of her brother's own famous Rapidash. She named it Ajairu, childishly so, in reference to the immense speed the creature possessed.

She became a shining example of a Samurai. Defending the Shogunate's honor, handling herself with elegance and charm, pursuing the arts and seeking to master the self. Some at court secretly whispered foul names and suspicions, Imperial Dog, Traitor at Heart, Daughter of a Criminal, etcetera, but none dared challenge the respected warrior openly in the courts nor in the dueling ring. She had the favor of the Shogun, and a legacy as a burden.

To make matters worse, her brother had become a nuisance in the side of the Shogunate. The ace trainer and prodigious warrior of the Hanabi Clan was waging a bandit war against the Shogun and his supporters- but word of his death eventually spread through the land, bringing Hanabi Yasashi back into the focus of all.

She wrote a poem;

Fire fades at last
Let ashes lie where they may
Let Spring come again

And with precious little time to truly mourn, the Shogun has now tasked her with what seems to be the impossible;

Rigby and Banny are both probably just a few seasons younger than Ellis’ own son, Grant. This makes it so that there’s probably a decently personal connection between him and all the young folk of the Abbey; he certainly feels at least part the parent to all after the death of his Adelaide. So between growing up a little behind Grant, and the taking of Adelaide by the illness she got, there’s 10000% some grandfatherly vibes going on. I don’t think there’s a dibbun in Redwall who hasn’t been chased out of the cellar!

Grant probably is the one who, once he got old enough to begin learning, would be the one to sneak safer ales to the other friends. Certainly no longer does this- but those two are in the age group he’d probably have included in his mischief.

I like to imagine old Tybalt the Vole is still alive as well, but is blind and pretends he can’t do anything anymore because of it. Certainly a source of sneaky dibbun schemes, that one.
