Shipyard Med-Bay
"I must warn you that this is patchwork at best." Doctor Raphael Vitella, the last human from Tigris, said to one of the engineers assigned to work on retrofitting the colony ship as he finished up on the radiation burn on the patient's hand. "Can I get back to work? Yes or no?" The engineer asked Raphael. "Yes, but you won't be able to use heavy machinery. The nerves in that hand are too severely damaged." Raph answered. "My supervisor won't like that." The engineer said to Doctor Vitella. "He can complain until the heat death of the universe. The nerve damage you have suffered will be permanent without surgery and there are no specialists available to perform it. Now, unless you have any other injuries, leave so that I can tend to other patients." Raphael Vitella said to his patient, the engineer walking out of the Med-Bay. "Long night?" Doctor Ferdinand asked Vitella as he approached with a mug full of coffee in each hand. "Everyone is on edge. We're facing supply shortages. Workers pushin' their equipment to the limit to get the colony ship retrofitted for long distance travel, and rumors of Metacer in the bowels of the shipyard is spookin' the refugees." Raphael Vitella said to Doctor Ferdinand as he took the mug of the other doctor's left hand and gulped it down. "Supply shortage is correct. With Eden Prime and its colonies overrun, shipments of necessities have stopped completely. I went through several crates just to find coffee. I need the caffeine to get through long shifts like these." Doctor Ferdinand said to Vitella as he took a sip. "Well, this cup should be enough to get me through the rest of the shift. Idle hands are the Devil's playthings." Doctor Raphael Vitella said to Doctor Ferdinand as he handed him the cup and got back to work. "Doctor. This security officer is wounded bad. He was jumped by several men outside the bar." One of the nurses said to Doctor Raphael Vitella as a patient was brought into the Med-Bay. "You'd think a time of crisis would cause people to put aside their differences, but it seems that some people will use it as an excuse to be violent against others. Get him on the table and bring me some painkillers! We need to seal these wounds fast!" Doctor Vitella said, the nurse who had brought the patient in scrambling to get the required medications while another put the patient on the table. "I told them to put down their weapons and put their hands on their heads and they didn't listen. it was like the lights were on in their head but nobody's home. Then they ran towards me with knifes like they came right out of a horror movie. I was able to fight them off, but they shrugged off wounds that would cause other humans to collapse in pain or back off. They must've gotten high on some real heavy-duty shit." The wounded security officer said to Raphael as the doctor was handed the vial of painkillers. "Royal Jelly. Prior to the fall, some of the more enterprisin' gangs were able to get their hands on entire jars of the stuff and began sellin' it on the Black Market. I wouldn't be surprised if the survivin' members established new operations after arrivin' on the shipyard. I will inform the Chief Of Security, but you will have to provide the exact details once you are no longer on painkillers. Nothin' good can come from drug dealers turnin' desperate refugees into Jelly Heads." Doctor Vitella said to the security officer as he injected him with the contents of the vial, immediately following it up by sealing up the wounds.

Once he had patched up the injured security guard, he headed to the nearest terminal. "One of your officers was attacked by several men high on Royal Jelly. I had to give him painkillers before sealin' up his wounds. His condition is currently stable, but I do advise holdin' off on questions until the painkillers wear off. Thank you." Doctor Ralph Vitella said to the Chief Of Security through the terminal before turning his attention to other patients.

Two hours later
Doctor Ralph Vitella got changed and headed back to his quarters. They weren't far, as he might be called back to his temporary workplace to perform surgery. He entered through the door and closed it behind him before heading to his desk. His quarters were larger than average, but they were mostly bare, as he didn't bring much with him. He looked at the mirror and saw his reflection be replaced by fire as he heard shouts and machinegun fire. He headed to his desk and opened a drawer, pulling out a bottle of Whiskey and opening it before pouring himself a glass and taking a swig.
Character Description

Name: Raphael Vitella
Species: Human
Sex: Male
Age: 40
Role/Job: Doctor
Appearance: A lean man with black hair, brown eyes, and a mustache wearing a doctor's coat.
Strengths and Weaknesses

Skills:

First Aid, Diagnosing patients, Surgery

Weaknesses:
Cultural obliviousness: Despite living on Eden Prime for years and picking up on some mannerisms, Raphael is still an outsider.
Restlessness: Raphael Vitella is haunted by The Metacer Invasion, including the death of his family
Background:

Backstory: Hailing from on the planet Tigris, Raphael Vitella, son of Garibaldi, wanted more from life than becoming a factory worker like his father and brothers. His cousin Luca asked him to join him and his friends for a night on the town multiple times but he declined, preferring to focus on his studies so that he can have a chance at getting a high-paying job. He eventually settled on becoming a doctor and doubled down on work ethic. As soon as Raphael was old enough, he went to medical school and dedicated himself to his studies. He graduated at the top of his class and was praised by his parents for his success. He spent his residency at a hospital on the planet, learning the ins-and-outs of the medical profession. His superior looked down on him for being born into a working-class family while praising graduates from rich families. This disdain towards him opened his eyes to the fact that even in an age of FTL trave where mankind coexisted with alien species, there will always be rich people looking down on those who did not come from privileged backgrounds, even if they were the same species, swore the same oaths, and were part of the same profession. However, Raph did not give up or transfer to another hospital. He continued performing his duties to the best of his abilities while ignoring all verbal jabs made by his superior. Raphael eventually finished his residency, but instead of continuing to practice medicine on Tigris, he accepted to fill a job opening at one of the hospitals on Eden Prime, seeing it as his chance to be a somebody.

Raphael Vitella's career was an uneventful one until the fateful day Eden Prime and her colonies were attacked by an ancient threat that he had once dismissed as a horror story used by parents to frighten little kids, creatures that human and alien alike had thought extinct, monsters whose existence was only known from old files: the Metacer. Hospitalizations for insect bites increased as the Metacer grew in number. Despite the Media claiming that everything would return to normal soon, Raph wasn't buying it, as the stories he heard from patients that survived encounters with the Metacer painted a picture of giant bugs effortlessly picking entire acres clean of crops and livestock and people. It wasn't long before the Metacer hordes were large enough to attack towns. Raphael hoped that the military would be able to deal with them, but prepared to evacuate if the defenses were overwhelmed. He received a call from his family, his mother telling them that his father was taking them to a ship that would be leaving Tigris. The last thing Raph heard before the transmission cut out was the smashing of walls and the screams of his mother, father, and cousin. The situation got worse as the crisis continued, the military growing weaker as the Metacer grew stronger, people desperately trying to flee as entire cities were being overrun, tanks and artillery firing everything they had as the enemy advanced towards their hastily prepared positions at breakneck speed. Raphael Vitella made it to the nears spaceport in time to get aboard a ship headed off of Eden Prime, the soldiers stationed there being overrun as the ship took off, the pounding of the remaining tanks and artillery growing quiet as the evacuation craft flew higher into the atmosphere. He watched out the window of the evacuation ship as more ships left the planet. The ships arrived at a shipyard where a colony ship was being retrofitted for a long migration to what they hoped to be their new home. This filled Raphael with a new sense of hope, as it offered a clean slate for everyone who survived the journey to the planet, yet his mind was still fraught with thoughts of the death of his family and the devastation that he had witnessed as he raced to the evacuation point. He helped the medical staff aboard the shipyard to the best of his ability while waiting for the ship to be ready to make its one-way trip. Neither he nor his co-workers were under any illusion that Eden Prime and its colonies could be reclaimed, as the troops guarding the station and the soldiers that were able to escape the planet were all that remained of the military.

"Looks like two of our number ran off into the jungle as soon as we landed, Jacob. I hope God is willin' to throw them a bone because they will need all the luck they can get." Michael Gibbs said to his younger brother as he looked around the camp and noticed that two members of the expedition were gone. "We will bury those fools if we find their remains. Judgin' by what I see, their odds of survival look grim." Jacob Gibbs said to his older brother as he briefly pointed as some rocks off the coast, the rotting barnacle covered remains of a wrecked ship jutting from them like a fence post, parts of it looking like a large carnivore had taken bites out of the ship before it had crashed into the rocks. "For now, we need to focus on more immediate matters. The expedition is still setting up camp, I need to introduce myself to the others, and you best take the opportunity to talk to Natan about what he plans to do after we've finished settin' up the tents and perimeter. Whatever it is will be the key to our survival in such a dangerous place." Jacob added "I understand your point. Omon is a lost continent full of unknown dangers, but it is also an uncharted land full of wonder and mystery yet to be discovered. How many people get such an opportunity? How many get to go on an adventure in a place that previous would-be explorers have failed to reach? We took our chance to be part of somethin' greater and now we are in a lost world waitin' for someone to start turnin' over stones. The ruins to find and explore, the wildlife to be discovered, the treasures to be found, and new peoples to meet. People will write stories about this expedition to the Lost Continent. I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of them are part of it. So long as we keep an iron loaded and our wits about us, we will survive Omon and make it back to America in one piece." Michael Gibbs said to Jacob Gibbs, the man of the cloth walking towards the center of camp while his older brother headed to Natan's tent in the hopes that he might be able to find what Natan's plans are.

"I highly doubt that we will find any dragons or sea serpents, but I am certain that there will be creatures that are dangerous enough to be considered monstrous. The Dark Continent has lions and spotted cats, rhinos and elephants, hippos and crocodiles, all of which terrified the Greeks and Romans. The West has coyotes and mountain lions. The Rockies and northern states have wolves and bears. The south has alligators. The Raj has Tigers. From what I heard, the wilderness of Australia is full of creatures deadlier than any I have mentioned. However, such beasts ain't invincible. They can be killed. The larger ones are hunted by those with the bravery and skill to pursue such trophies. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the men who signed on with this expedition do so for that exact reason. As for keepin' a piece of iron in reach, I brought a pistol. Nobody visits an undiscovered and untamed land without bringin' a weapon in case they encounter hostile natives." Michael Gibbs said to Cal as he pulled out his Colt Army Single Action Army, light reflecting off the part of the pearl handle. "I also have a Bore 4 Bore and the ammo for it in my cabin. What? I grew up on a farm on the frontier. My father taught me that the wild animals are more dangerous than the most vicious of outlaws, same as my brothers. I have not forgotten that lesson and have spent some of my hard-earned money on a gun powerful enough to stop a chargin' elephant so that I can protect myself from any of the monstrous beasts said to live on the lost continent." Michael Gibbs added.

Dining Area
Jacob Gibbs continued eating his steak and drinking his whiskey as his older brother talked to the Australian. "Sounds like my brother is meetin' with some other members of this expedition. I wouldn't be surprised if he mentioned that elephant gun he bought. Been a while since he shot anythin' larger than a six-shooter and that thing is heavier than the rifles dad used to teach us. It probably has more kick than a mule." Jacob said to himself before taking another bite.
"An archeologist? You made the right choice. Omon should have plenty of ruins for you to explore, ancient scrolls for you to decipher, tombs for you to discover, and antiquities for you to retrieve. A better use of your talents than riskin' your life in the desert for mere trinkets. Legends about Oman say that there is great treasure on the Lost Continent. I seek that treasure. Not to fatten my coffers with the gold and jewels of a long dead civilization, but to gain the prestige of bringin' rare artifacts back to the states. The glory that will allow me to be accepted by my peers. I went from a textile shop owner to someone who saw the protentional of oil to the owner of a textile factory, yet my wealth and my choice of wife has not stopped those born into wealth from turnin' their noses up at me for bein' born a farm boy on the frontier. The success of this expedition will ensure that nobody in America will ever look down on me again. As for my younger brother Jacob, you already know that he agreed to join this expedition in exchange for his share of whatever treasure we find goes to the Church. I expected no less of him. I do advise against askin' him about his military service if you want to hear stories of glorious battles and heroic deeds and war bein' an adventure. You will receive none of that from him. I also advise you to keep an eye out for any unsavory Individuals and a hand on any weapons you decided to bring with you. I've heard of captains who've hired such men for long voyages across the Pacific and I would not be surprised if a few of them answered Natan's call for volunteers." Michael Gibbs said to the well-dressed Austro-Hungarian man as he stared out of the Observation Deck Window.

"Allow me to introduce myself. I am Michael Gibbs. I met Natan Wright at the New York Stock Exchange. He convinced me to invest in his little oil operation and combined with my shares of Standard Oil, I became a millionaire. How could I say no to the offer to join the man who contributed to my financial success on this prestigious expedition? To set foot on a lost continent and see all the wonders it has to offer? Such an opportunity comes only once in a lifetime." Michael Gibbs said to the man in the top hat and the Australian as he walked up the window of the observation deck. "In case you are wondering, I did bring someone with me. My younger brother Jacob. The only sibling I respect, as he was the only other member of the family who wasn't content to live the rest of their life on the family farm. I invited him to be this expedition's chaplain and he agreed on the condition that his share of whatever treasure we might find goes to the Church. However, I did not choose him because he is my blood. He served in the army during the war and didn't swear off the use of a gun after becoming a man of the cloth. That makes him better suited for the task than most priests, as anyone who might be livin' on Omon might not welcome outsiders with open arms. Not to mention the legends of monstrous beasts livin' on the lost continent." Michael Gibbs added.

Crew Quaters/Dining Area
Jacob Gibbs left his cabin and headed to the dining room, wanting to meet some of the souls he would be accompanying to the lost continent. He bumped into someone as he walked down the hall. "Sorry. I didn't see you there." Jacob said to the stranger he bumped into, the big man uttering something in Turkish before leaving. "Mr. Wright must have people from all over the world on a dangerous expedition. I honestly shouldn't be surprised. A man headin' to a lost continent can't turn away capable men willin' to roll the dice on such an expedition." Jacob said to himself as he turned back around and continued heading down the hall. The chaplain continued walking until he entered the dining area and took a seat at one of the tables. "If you didn't hear the intercom, we will be landing at our destination in one hour, monsieur. I suggest making your order now. It might be your last chance to eat something other than field rations." A French staff member said to Jacob Gibbs as he approached him. "Your finest steak and a bottle of whiskey should be enough for this former war dog. I can't protect my flock on an empty stomach." Jacob replied, the Frenchman heading to the kitchen to inform the chef of his order.

Background
Born the third of seven children, Michael Gibbs had great aspirations than living on a farm on the frontier. Michael left to make his fortune once his younger brother Jacob was old enough to join the military. He started by getting a job at an Ironworks, saving every penny he didn't spend. Michael Gibbs eventually got fed up with the low pay and quit his job. Needing employment, Michael began working on the railroad, preferring the cool air over the heat of the Ironworks. He continued working on the rails until he decided that it was time to go into business himself. Michael Gibbs took out a small loan and opened a textile shop, deciding that it would be a good change of pace from working with metal. Michael made a modest living from selling textiles and was able to pay back the loan. However, he decided that he wasn't making as much money as he liked, so he took out a loan and headed to New York to make it big. Little did he know that he would meet the man who would change his life.

Upon arriving in New York, Michael Gibbs asked for directions to the Stock Exchange, heading there once he knew where it was. Michael invested in Standard Oil and was approached by a strange man. When asked who he was, the strange man told him that his name was Natan Wright before asking if he would like to invest in a business venture. Michael Gibbs, not wanting to turn down a potentially lucrative deal, agreed to the offer. This arrangement proved his assumption correct and he made a fortune in oil money. Michael paid off his debt and went from the owner of a textile shop to the owner of a textile factory. However, despite this increase in wealth and marrying a wealthy bachelorette, he was still looked down upon by the established Upper Class for being from a poor family. It would be two years before he met Natan Wright again. Natan asked him if he was interested in joining an expedition to the lost continent of Omon, a land that, according to legend, held ancient treasure and a wilderness full of beasts that the world has never seen before. The mention of treasure was all it took for Michael to join on the condition that he take his younger brother Jacob Gibbs join him.

He found his younger brother behind the altar of a church and hugged him before asking him about his time in the military. Once Jacob Gibbs had finished telling him about the battles and those he killed and asked him why he came to the church, Michael told him about the expedition to the lost continent. Jacob Gibbs refused at first but changed his mind after being offered a share of the treasure that might be there. With his brother having agreed to join the expedition, Michael Gibbs headed to London with Jacob in tow. Once they were in Boston, they boarded the ship that would take them to London.

The two brothers arrived in London, Michael Gibbs telling Jacob that the Intrepid was an airship, that it had a fully trained crew, and that an airship was not as subject to the mercy of the wind as a hot air balloon before they headed to its location. They arrived and Jacob was impressed by the sight of the Intrepid. Michael told his younger brother that Natan had spared no expense for this expedition as they stared at it. Once they were onboard, Michael Gibbs escorted Jacob to the first available cabin before heading off to meet with Natan for the trip.

Background
Born a middle child on the frontier, Jacob Gibbs lived a quiet life on the family farm, learning how to use a gun. Jacob's brothers were content with their lot in life. Jacob and his older brother Michael, on the other hand, wanted more from life. Jacob would join the army when he was old enough in pursuit of adventure while Michael would leave the ranch to chase his dream of becoming a businessman. When the order came to move out, he was thrilled at the thought of fighting his first battle. It was not the glorious adventure he was expecting. His unit found themselves facing of against numerically superior native warriors and many of them were killed in the fighting. It was during this skirmish that Jacob Gibbs made his first kill and his second and his third. He made it out of it alive, but he had seen that war was Hell.

Once the war was over, Jacob Gibbs joined the clergy out of a desire for redemption, swearing to never raise his gun again unless it was to defend himself and/or those whose lives are entrusted to him. It was after one of his sermons that he reunited with his brother Michael. Michael had made his fortune off of oil and wanted to hear of his brother's war stories. He told him about his service in the army: the battles he fought in, the soldiers who died alongside him, and the lives he took. He then asked Michael why he was there, adding "You didn't come here just to ask a preacher about the war". Michael told him that he had joined an expedition to a lost continent funded and led by his associate Nathan Wright and wanted his brother to come along. Jacob Gibbs told him that he is not some gunslinger, but Malcolm said that if the expedition was successful, Jacob would get some of the treasure that might be there. Jacob accepted the offer on the condition that his share goes to the Church. Malcolm agreed, Jacob grabbed his rifle, and the two left the town.

The two brothers arrived in London, Jacob Gibbs surprised by the lack of a ship waiting for them at the port. Michael Gibbs told Jacob that the Intrepid was an airship and that they would be flying to their destination. Jacob Gibbs admitted that he was skeptical of the idea of a man flying in the sky, believing that it is safer to travel by land or sea than it is by air. Michael told his brother that the Intrepid is manned by a fully trained crew and that it would be as vulnerable to the mercy of the wind as a hot air ballon before the two of them headed to the location of the airship. Once they arrived at the location, they headed to the Intrepid, Jacob impressed by the sight of the airship. Michael told his younger brother that Nathan Wright spared no expense on the expedition.

Upon boarding the vessel, Michael Gibbs escorted Jacob to the first available cabin before heading to meet with Nathan Wright. Jacob Gibbs got settled in and found a copy of Treasure Island. He began reading as the Intrepid departed from London, knowing that it would be a long trip to their destination.
