Well, of course it wouldn't be that easy. Victoria closed her eyes amd took a breath. "I meant tomorrow in the stands, since I assumed you'd be there to cheer Cassie on. But if it won't wait... Can you walk and talk at the same time? Believe it or not I am actually on the clock." she nodded down the hallway, before turning to Cassie. "Tell us what?" she asked, thinking what could be so important. The thought of the Young Avengers withdrawing from the contest came to her mind, which would be mildly amusing - Tori would want a picture of the more contest-keen Excelsiors' faces when they learned of that.

Hope let out a pained sigh. She knew that Vicky cared and felt very deeply, but it seemed like family always fell at the bottom of her priority list. She supposed she only had herself to blame for that behavior. Maybe that was part of this, somehow. She'd put too much of herself into Vicky. "Sure. I can walk and talk."

Cassie grimaced a bit, rocking backwards on her heels ever so slightly. She'd really meant to send a heads up about this, but Vicky wasn't competing and she wasn't nearly as close with anyone on Excelsior, so it slipped her mind. "Oh, it's just... The Strange Academy kids like to play dirty. Mess with your heads and stuff."

"Oh. Well, then, consider us informed. Sabine pulled memories out of one of them that kinda point out to them using some sort of boost drug. Hence me heading to their hotel room to look through the window." she explained, "...and possibly engage in a bit of BNE... unless you're saying they can spoof memories and outsmart our outsmarting?" Victoria raised an eyebrow.

She turned back to Hope. "Good! Because- because..." she could the nanites on her cheek changing to reflect more of the red spectrum, as she felt like - well, was, really - a kid asking mom for help. "...I could really use someone to point me to an exit. I swear I walked forward with no more than 0.015° deviation and I still walked in circles..." she sighed, setting out at a slow pace, checking if Hope followed. "Well, then, I suppose we're doing this now, so... How much did you hear from Dr. Whitehall and Cassie?" She asked, not really wanting to go over it again and drag those ugly emotions back to the forefront of her mind, but considering how many things slipped her sister's mind recently...

Cassie's eyebrows scrunched up, the same way they had when as kids, her favorite stuffed animal had gone missing - only to be sneakily replaced with a duplicate. The Strange Academy kids were staying at a hotel? But this was a boarding school and they were hosting? That didn't add up to her. "That's weird that they're staying at a hotel... They live here, right?" Cassie asked, a little uncertain. Vicky seemed so sure of things. And she knew her sister was paying close attention to this situation, whereas Cassie had barely been able to spare the contest a moment's thought past few weeks, what with everything happening with Billy and then the stuff with the Mother... "I mean - I meant that they like to get into your heads. Play tricks on you. Find your weaknesses and exploit it, even before the contest starts and stuff."

Hope and Cassie both walked with Vicky, Cassie situated in the middle. As Vicky expressed her need for help, Hope nodded in commiseration. Magic and technology did not always cohabitate well - something she had taken special pains to attempt to correct for when she had been designing Vicky, all those years ago. She hadn't wanted her to be crippled by it. "Of course. It's a little ways ahead - right before the main merchandise store." She then hesitated. Vicky's other question was harder to share. She hadn't spoken with Cassie much about what had happened - Cassie's favorite parent when it came to emotional crises was Scott. What conversations they had shared had been blunt and tense, as Hope rapidly found herself out of her depth.

But she was at her heart a researcher - so Vicky had not been the only one to attend a counselor. They had only had a few sessions, but Hope felt she had the tools to approach this conversation. Or at least, she hoped that she did. "The school notified me when you sent yourself to CAGE, but I never received a call from a Dr. Whitehall. Cassie and I had some discussions, but... I think it would be better if you said it to me directly. I want to hear from you, Vicky. Not another person."

Vicky paused in thought for a moment. "Well... Okay, I only have a confirmed sighting of them at the hotel. All the more reason to look what were they up to." she shrugged at Cassie's confusion.

Back to the issue at hand... "You might want to slip that ring on, I bumped into mom and, well... I don't think you in particular need telling that families are not all sunshine and roses and the feelings can get ugly." Tori thought over the mind link.

She sighed, already feeling drained before she even uttered a word. "So... You understand that I'm angry, do you? Want to help, hm?" She tried to take a nonconfrontational tone, but the command never reached her mouth. "I am sooo much more than that. Above all else, I am fucking terrified! I'm scared that at any point you or a couple of others can take away whatever perceived autonomy I have! I mean, is my drive to help people even my own, or did you order me to do that too? Next? I've never felt this betrayed. Did you put a control chip in Cassie after she broke into your stuff to empower herself and not tell her about it? That would still be fucked up beyond all reason but at least it would be a consequence of something she did - not what she might do or what she is! I could stomach it if you gave me to someone else to raise and were some distant creator person, but this from someone acting as my parent..."

The words were coming out like an avalanche. Once it started, it could not be stopped. "And angry? Oh, no. I am bloody enraged. I did everything right. I played along with the human masquerade you had me doing, despite the fact that it was tearing me up on the inside. I stopped Ultron from being freed from me around Halloween time - Don't get me started on using that as my core - only to be shot in the back by that same backdoor. What do you think Arcade used to take control of me? I'm meant to be a protector and HE USED ME TO FUCKING KILL SOMEONE!" her voice was growing more and more thunderous with every sentence.

Vicky had to take a moment to calm back down. "All I could do was watch. And when I tried to shut down to prevent it? Not only wouldn't it let me, but apparently, doing the thing I was built for and taking every option to not let that bastard have an obedient Ultron gets me landed in a madhouse!" she hissed.

"And now you want to help? What made you do that? Did you grow a conscience, or perhaps the spine to tell the government 'no'? No. I don't trust you enough to let you help. Hell, I'm still worried that even now you might somehow take control of me." That brought forth a thought. Was there something that could be done to remedy this screwed up situation at all? Vicky meant what she said. Even if Hope offered to remove the offending features, she wasn't letting her anywhere near her code. And no one she trusted had the skill to do the changes. No one but- "You want to make this right? Give me the specs for my core, so I can fix this myself. No more strings on me. I cannot settle for anything less."

Hope didn't want to fight Vicky. She wasn't here to scream and argue. And as much as she would have wanted to respond to every point her daughter made, she couldn't. Her memory wasn't perfect, she was only human, and seeing her daughter in so much pain, so lost and confused and angry... It was killing her. She wanted nothing more than to pull her into a tight hug, to do whatever she could to take the pain away. She'd thought - she'd thought she'd done the right thing by Vicky. That was all she had ever wanted to do was give her the tools she needed to be successful. The backdoor access - it was a precaution, no one knew how a knew artificial intelligence would react, not when Vicky had first been made. Hope hadn't thought about it in years. And the core - it was connected to Ultron, yes, but it was connected to Vision too - the very best synthezoid Hope had ever known, someone she had dreamed her daughter could be like.

She stopped walking. She listened as Vicky spoke. And when there was space for her to join in, she took a breath, and could only hope that her child would hear her, too. She was only human. She made mistakes. "I am so so sorry... I never meant for you to be in pain like this, to hurt like this. I've only ever wanted the best for you. I never wanted to control you. I only ever... I only ever wanted to protect you, to give you the tools you'd need to succeed." Her hands were trembling, as she reached into her purse, and pulled out a datapad. Her fingers swept across the holographic surface, until the transfer was complete. "There. I sent you everything. Every bit of data, every line of code, all of it. And..." she paused for a moment, before a series of contacts would be sent to Vicky as well, "I know you don't trust me to do this. But operating on yourself... it's dangerous. Please, at least give one of these folks a call. Just for advice, if nothing else. Tony can help."

Victoria paused walking as well. She looked at her mother and sister with an expression that would be unreadable, because a lot of feelings were mixed in her at the very moment. She didn't expect to just get the information without some sort of pushback. But there was no lecture, no explanation, nothing, just... compliance with her wishes, seemingly for free. Finally, she sighed softly. "I doubt I will ever understand how humans think. Back at CAGE, Cas said that the government would come to scrap me if those safeguards were no longer in place. I don't know how to take you giving me this without even a warning about that, but... I'll choose to believe you don't have ill intentions. Especially since I would still do this even with the warning, so it'd be a moot point anyway..."

She then looked at Hope in full for the first time in this interaction. "And... look... I'm not so arrogant to think I can do no wrong modifying myself. I said I don't trust anyone else to actually commit the code, as they could swap it for something else while I was powerless to stop it. I don't mind you checking the changes for errors, and I'll trust the one who wrote it in the first place over anyone else. You know what killed me the most on this situation?"

Tori reached up with her hands slowly, as if unsure if she was allowed to. But she pushed through the doubt, and took Hope's hands in hers. "I thought I didn't have a safe home to come to anymore." she admitted, "I... don't think it's unsafe anymore. I'm still not entirely okay until I do make those changes, but... I want to try and make this right, if you'll still have me."

"Roger that." Victoria nodded at Nicolas. If nothing else this brother was a bit more forthcoming with mission details.

The message from Vision rubbed her wrong though, and she hammered her fingers against the display as she typed:
From: Victoria v. D.
To: Vision
What do you mean 'not needed'? What's the point of laws and rules then?

If someone steals a granny's purse on the street, and a passer-by takes it off of him and returns it to the granny, but the thief runs away, do we not look for the thief to prosecute him just because the harm was undone?!

A crime is a crime, and a rule breach is a rule breach. If they played a stupid game, they deserve a stupid prize, otherwise the rule has no point and this behavior is invited in the future.

Her teeth ground against each other, threatening to spit out fake nanite enamel and possibly adamantium powder. This from an avenger...

Ready to get the hell out, she excused herself from the brothers, neutralized Magneto's power-incontinence around herself and headed out of the stands just as Sabine talked to her again. "I've talked to Vis and he confirmed they declared nothing but a mace, and that a memory of them taking something after the medical exam is sufficiently damning to bring it to the judges. If what you saw fits, bring it to him. I'm forwarding you our conversation for details. I'm about to head out to the hotel anyway to have a look, so I'll probably be out of range - phone me if you need me before I'm back." she thought over as she searched for an exit.

It didn't go well.

When she passed a particular feature on the wall for what she thought was the second time, she scratched an X on the wall and sure enough, after a while of walking only forward, she arrived at it again. "I hate spatial magic..." she cursed under her breath, and turned to another hallway to try a different route...

...and found herself face to face with one of the items on the top of the list of people she didn't want to see. Her creator, eyes, mouth and hands pixelated beyond recognition by her protection macro, accompanied by her sister. Victoria froze mid-stride, and Sabine would be hit by a barrage of feelings emanating from her. Surprise. Then anger. Then existential dread. And her promised backup was still in the arena.

Forcing herself to remain calm (sans the fingernails digging into her palms), she decided to try and dodge the situation for now. Realistically, she expected this would happen, but right now, she wasn't ready for that conversation. "Hi. Busy investigating cheating scumbag would-be wizards. Talk later?" she said, moving to go around them.

"Oh I was listening. It's just that with you, if you say the sky is blue, I'll still check. This has the makings of there being no one right now, but when I show up, whoever put it in there or prevents you form getting there will be present." Victoria frowned at Barty. That or there'd be a guard of demons or some shit. They seemed to worry about magical protections, but she noted for herself not to ignore other means of protecting the thing either. In the same manner, she took a real good look at the projection Nicolas offered, committing every facet to memory in case there were decoys.

Meanwhile in her pocket, the other conversation came to a close for now:
From: Victoria v. D.
To: Vision
I don't. Sabine might, if a memories are admissible. I'll go investigate further and notify you if I find anything. I'll be on the phone if you need me before I return.

It was perhaps a bit cheeky to take this as an excuse to go to the hotel immediately, but she was taking it unless Vis tried to stop her... And then she could blame magically enforced contracts. Vis didn't need to know they weren't time limited.

She received the confirmation she needed from Sabine... And then the Blonde promptly went down. The absence of a mind on the other end of the link was a clear indication she wouldn't be getting back up for a while, and perhaps it was high time Tori moved out of range before she found out whether comatose people dreamed. While she would ordinarily love to find out what dreaming was like, here there was a nonzero chance of said dream involving steamy scenes with her bestie, and that was not something she needed to witness.

"No time like the present." Vicky said to Barty, "And to be honest, paying you off sounds more entertaining. If I was interested in this, I'd be down there."she nodded towards the arena, "What's the room number?" If you say nine and three quarters, you'll get hit.

Vicky was analyzing all of the inputs at once, weighing her options. She was still unused to the mental input, now that she could compare with verbal and electronic almost at the same time, but it was growing on her. It was certainly better than speaking. Then again, most things would be better than speaking to Barty. At least she did not have to worry about having to check whether the terms of their deal were being respected, as she found out in the morning.

"I suppose since you weren't smitten by some ancient magic, the world is better off with you having it than whoever holds it now, even if it isn't actually your property. Very well, you'll get your gem. DO you have any more intel? A picture? Room number? Whom may I have to go through?" she asked in preparation, while she tapped on the phone:

From: Victoria v. D.
To: Vision
They have not consumed any *as far as we have seen*. Two of them were just surrounded by rock on all sides for long enough. I'll pass over that they declared nothing else and tell our guys to watch out for it. IF the Hex girls are trying to cheat, we'll have to catch them. Or this could be bogus. I'll try to find out more details. Hypothetically speaking - What are the rules on protesting the result of a match if a contestant has possible evidence of an illegal enhancement?

"Oh come on! You could have commanded her to surrender!" Vicky exclaimed as Sabine moved against Thelma. She checked whether the psion was still in a position where she could keep talking before replying. I have an errand to run at your hotel. Are they also staying there? Maybe I could snoop around, see what I can find.

And just like that, her day got worse. Well if it isn't my second least favorite wizard... she barley resisted planting her face in her palm. "What do you mean, it's been a while? That was yesterday." she deadpanned, likewise not deigning him with a look, albeit her interest in the fight was nigh nonexistent. Her eyebrow raised slightly at the mention of the favor. It looked like Barty intended to cash it in sooner rather than later.

She took a breath to ask about it, but before she could utter one thing, she felt being pulled up and out of her seat, her sensors screaming about magnetic anomalies. She grabbed onto the edges of the seat to hold herself in place, feeling the frame bend and the bolts holding it down strain. "Old man, please, could you focus a bit?!" she turned to glare daggers at Magneto. Or tried to, at least. The expression that came out on her face was more like 75% embarrassment, rather than anger.

Turning back at the sound of another voice, she scrutinized the other guy. "You must be the more responsible brother I've heard about." she turned back to face the arena, "Well? Is either of you going to tell me what do you need of me, or are you going to be cute about it?"

When she received the thought from Sabine, she mulled it over for a bit. From what she knew, items were allowed so long as they were declared. What was not allowed was using any performance enhancing drugs. Could be perhaps one of those, but it was a stretch. "Bold assumption. With wizards, it could be anything from a mint to a grenade. Just look at Max, he can make power dampeners as small and inconspicuous as a ring, whereas any created with conventional tech are significantly bigger. I'll see what I can do, starting by forwarding the intel to Vision, have him check whether they declared any such items if he can. But I think you have it backwards: You're in the best position to find out more. The people that know about it are right there with you in the arena. Pry the facts out of their heads, just like you learned about it in the first place." Victoria thought back, wondering why Sabine didn't think of that. She wanted to think that the psion was pacing herself, but there was a non-zero chance that due to her past, she was thinking of using her powers as the very last resort, especially with the 'fresh wounds' from yesterday. Also, she thought of another potential source that might know, but she refused to go there, as there would no doubt be an unspecified price to pay later. If Sabine wanted to indebt herself to wizards, she would have to leave Victoria out of it.

Doing as she said, she reached for her phone in her pocket, quickly tapping a message:

From: Victoria v. D.
To: Vision
Hi Vis. If you're not busy, Sabine has pulled something out of one of the Hex Girls' head. They have an item that looks like a green purplish candy that she thinks looked shady. Do you have access to the contest paperwork to check if they declared any items?

Are you allowing spirit user characters? (Season 4/Frontier)

The talk with Sabine earlier went differently that Tori expected. Before she could get a word in, Sabine came with a wish slash instruction from the Kingston-Grays to not blab about what she saw in Casper's mind. Victoria could readily agree to that - To be frank, she found the memory quite unremarkable. Casper has obviously gotten better and could help provide a good home for two of her friends, so props to him. What came before then was not of interest, and even if it was, Victoria never had the intention of sharing that with anyone.

The interesting conversation happened afterwards. Once the news of Victoria's overhearing of Sabine's thoughts and it cutting off shortly after Sabine went to talk with the masters of the house was floated around, the duo experimented with it shortly. Vicky found it highly ironic that a mutant family was so liberal with issuing power dampeners, but once said dampener was removed, the intrusive thoughts came back. Moreover, they apparently transmitted in both directions.

In the end, there wasn't that much time to study their new... ability, Tori guessed, in detail. Victoria promised to try not to think too distracting thoughts during Sabine's matches, but she did express a want to meet later to see how this new connection they gained could be controlled and utilized. Or, heck, how or why it even worked. Was Sabine unknowingly doing this, or was Vicky now a psion, albeit very, very selective? If they could understand and develop this unexpected gift... That gave Victoria ideas regarding it's use.

In the meantime though, she was stuck here in the grandstands, watching the circus, because... She didn't know. She had no interest in the contest, other than perhaps cheering Leah on. She was still on the fence about cheering for her sister - not that the Young Avengers apparently needed much support, although she supposed showing up in an YA t-shirt and baseball cap would have been a nice way to troll her classmates. Thinking of her sister brought another unpleasant thought to the foreground. Their mother was either a no-show, she took steps to steer well clear of Victoria... or Victoria overdid it with the counter-admin macro and made herself completely unable to perceive her instead of simply censoring any verbal or nonverbal communication her system could interpret as an order. Although she liked to think she could code such a simple thing well enough.

So, ASTRA did what ASTRA does - Used the time to catalogue the people and powers on display, expanding her threat library more in one day than in the entire year prior. The whole Leah's dad situation was ever present in the corner of her mind - supposedly it was some kind of a hoax, but if the man intended to fuck about, well... there was enough distractions here to perhaps pull something off, so she kept her eye on the bushy-haired woman when she could.

Speaking of, the MCI team has filed into the field again, and Tori tried to tell her mind to not think at lightyear per second speeds. Gideon's loud screech made her think about expanding her people-ignoring macro by a few non-admin names.

"Focus. Your team is cobbled together from the remnants of three others, the Hack girls have advantage on their side due to synergy alone." she thought back to Sabine as the fight was beginning. Okay, maybe there were two more people she respected enough to root for. "You can marvel at the nuances of the fight after you're done sending them home crying!"

She did chuckle when Leah ripped the Hex girl's little telekinetic cage into pathetic wreckage, though.

"Danvers' risk profile has so many red flags she may as well communicate in semaphore." Vicky answered Dorian's inquiry. "Pragmatically moral, ethically rigid, impulsive, prone to high risk-taking under stress, and with powers that can level cities and beyond. I loathe to admit I see a lot of myself in that description, but I know I am one wrong step from falling to the dark side, and I'm going to great pains that put my own continued existence in jeopardy to avoid just that. She seems to me the type who would not even realize she became the villain, believeing herself in the right to the end."

The next set of suggestions left her indifferent. Spider-men somehow flew under her radar most of the time. "Marry OG Spider-Man. He seems like the smartest of the bunch. Bed Morales, let's see if there is any truth to the stereotypes. Kill Stacy. No particular reason, she's just solid meh." she shrugged.

To be frank, Victoria was growing bored of this game fast, but then Dorian and Percy made her actually miss her connectivity feature and instant access to internet translators when they spat different languages back and forth, and ended the whole exchange with what she could only assume was make-up sex. Stuck between thinking whether this was the purpose of the game the whole time, and if it was considered rude of Dorian as one of the hosts to abandon his guests for a booty call, she almost blurted out Sure, who needs killing? as an answer to April's question.

Gideon then suggested a change of a game, although obviously for her own benefit. "Last time I played truth or dare I kinda broke Dorian, so pass." she pouted. Then Ms. Drummond jumped at Gideon's offer perhaps a bit too enthusiastically and Danni also left, having had enough. It looked like prime time to disperse. "A'ight, Imma head out." she said as she hopped on her feet, before giving Sabine a pointed look, "Ms. Bassard, if I can steal a moment of your time now or in the morning, I have something to tell you may want to know about." With that she gave the crows a small bow of the head as a goodbye and went to her void of a room, intending to model some of the landscapes she had in her memory from earlier.

"Ohohooo, we have code Tokyo already and it's only round two. That certainly wasn't on my bingo card." Victoria snorted. She registered a significant heat buildup in Danni's direction and for a moment wondered whether firefighting would be on the agenda today, but things seemed under control - For the moment. She eyed the Hatchling draped around his shoulders with a jealous pout.

The whole marriage conversation went by her with little notice. If it happened, good for them. If it didin't, Tori wasn't of the opinion that a ceremony and some paperwork was required for another person to recognize one loved them. She supposed the tax benefits may be nice, but the RoI compared to the cost of your average wedding was pitiful and then there was the high occurrence risk of a divorce.

The choices posted by April were little less uncomfortable this time, as far as an asphalt goop alien that could corrupt your mind could be considered comfortable. "Marry Loki. Immediately. If it must be a villain, I'll take the god of trolling, sounds like fun time. Fuck Mystique. I mean variety is the spice of life, but she's not marriage material. And kill Venom because plus one to ick." Three. Two. One. "Oh, unleeeess... Venom was bound to me. That would make being told to go fuck myself a lot different experience."

Vicky felt well and truly out of her element. At school, she could take being in a crowd in stride, as that was an activity that served the purpose of education - yes, even at the Margaret Carter Institute. Here and now, this activity seemed... pointless. Didn't the rest have a big day tomorrow? Would they not like to sleep? At this rate, understanding humanity was getting further away, not closer. At least she was a little bit more comfortable. While Max insisted that being a kid meant dressing like one (her argument about not being even human fell on deaf ears), they reached some sort of compromise, and she was upgraded to suitjamas, minus a necktie.

As the game suggestions started cropping up, she nearly let a sadistic grin show up on her face. Spin the bottle would be so easy to manipulate. Her thoughts were stopped as Doria put up a few alternatives, and Victoria's head slowly turned to give him a deathly state. "Secret Ultron. Really."

The Social Queen among them then ordered what her subjects' game was going to be, and Tori was on the fence whether she liked it or not. On one hand, she was bound to learn something new about someone. On the other, she might wish she didn't. Danni demonstrated that point well. And before she realized it was her turn.

"Well, you screwed me over by putting family in the choices. That pretty much neccessitates killing Vision, although in any other set that honor would be firmly reserved for colonel Danvers. I suppose I could marry Vision and never touch him, but... You guys don't know how creepy he is in over-the-air conversation! Like... I am designed to mimic a human. I think in normal english sentences and all. It is a subroutine I don't control. Him? He fakes it. Whenever we talk in text, he drops it and is like: Query: Are you socializing with your friend group? Ugh." She explained, doing robot dance moves along with it until a shiver ran down her spine.

"So that's a firm kill on Vis. That leaves me two choices... Do I want to be one and done with Danvers, or do I want to get hitched to her to ruin the rest of her life?" she tapped her chin in thought. "Fuck Danvers - literally and figuratively - and marry Strange. He's not bad looking for an older gentleman and at least he could provide intelligent and interesting conversation."
