Current 10+ years of an RP idea, finally finished, on 10.10.2025. Goodnight Raven Squad, you were the best, wildest, most silly near future SOF RP that lived on the guild, and you got a worthy send off :)

Bio

I've RP'd for the best part of over 15 years now here on the Guild, and particularly like military settings, both contemporary, past and near future. I have even dabbled in a little more experimental RPs, as well as created a plethora of 1x1s over my time in the guild. I like creating RPs with a distinct flavour- and often shift between narrative-led RPs to semi-randomised plots. I've been more a GM lately than a player, and don't really lean into fandom- instead, exploring my own universes lifting themes from other source material.

My main interests are military-themed, near-future RPs, with a focus on technology. But I'm beginning to push what that RP idea looks like- taking inspiration from lots of media and focussing on the fun, indulgent side of RP, whilst also exploring the lows and emotional side.

Raven Squad is a project over seven years in the making, and focusses on a class-based, eccentric yet half-grounded near future special forces team that acts as a response team where you can't send any special forces team in. It's incredibly dumb, incredibly loose, and yet, has delivered some of my favourite plot points in RPG. A brainless action flick a la John Wick and Kingsman meets a complex thriller with a fun left turn in it, Raven has been the culmination of over a decade of loving special forces RPG, gaming influences and other silliness in a package that has provided players with something quite different to a normal military themed RPG. While at an end, this is an RP that is a signature- it's silly as hell, takes itself barely seriously, and is what peak fun military RPG to me should be.

Delta Hyper is a love letter to Wipeout, F1's Drive to Survive (Netflix) and contemporary Formula One, with influences from solarpunk, cyberpunk, transhumanism and other posthumanist concepts. An RP that follows pilots in their ups and downs, it's a story that hasn't got me playing an actual character, but framing the camera at each pilot (played by others), and presenting it as if it were a documentary. Lifting elements from TTRPG, this is a Racing RPG like no other and no parallel exists- using dice rolls and randomisation, with a stats-driven system to generate race results, rather than actually RPing the races, players experience the fast-paced, dynamic world of anti-gravity racing. This means that come Qualifying and Race, the results are genuinely a surprise to everyone- and based on decisions made through dilemmas and decisions made between races. Friendships, rivalry, the glamour and even a little political undertone play out in 2094, in a colourful, utopian future that focuses on the fight to take first place.

Then there's Tactical Breach Wizards: Fireteam Hex. First use of any set IP as a formal setting, this is an RP that offers a darker mirror to Raven Squad, focussing on the other side of the equation- unlikely heroes in an uncomfortable position. I don't normally do fantasy, but the world, the lore, the feeling of the characters and the ability to write a comedy just was too difficult to pass up. An RP that focuses on a group running away from a variety of threats as wanted mercenary wizards in the middle of a post-revolution, Eastern-Europe adjacent 1990s to present Polavia.

Lastly, Dispatch: Heroes of Claremont. This is another IP-adjacent world, albeit drawing on a different setting and a new cast of superheroes. As my "first" proper superhero RP, this combines workplace comedy, a Storyteller-lite system and a fun, diverse, and large cast together in a dynamic, diverse setting.

I'm pretty flexible and try and get back to people on ideas and responses, but sometimes, I may become very busy and it will take some time till I am un-busy. I aim to clear posts within a week!

Alright, the character is finished. I believe everything is in order. If anyone sees something out of place, please let me know.

Also, sorry I didn't get back to it. Theis and Merlin will get on very well I can imagine, there is a certain similarity in the way they think that I've noticed.

Merlin doesn't care, I would like to think. When you're fighting a group of bearded individuals, you take the fight to them...with equivelent beard. Though it means wrapping it up when wearing a gas mask using bobin pins, and so on, which isn't great...
Nikolaj will flirt like a motherfucker. Witty though.

Merlin does have a bit of a 'tail going in his beard, the significance of it though. I can imagine a hilarious scene where he lets someone like Alexandra casually stroke his beard...lol.
Perverted bisexual Russian? Eh, go on. Nikolaj is going to be hilarious to play, he's a little bit of a womanizer himself. It's more of his wit, and his charm that sort of works it out. Hence why he may be known as "Jamie fooking Lannister" for not just his appearance, but perhaps his actions, a kind of comedic relief in his character I would say. Merlin is too beardy for love. But his beard=love.

Nevar! Even I am adjusting mine a little.
Funny you mention that. In MoH, I remember that was the "Western" look, while the Russians had a really sort of Eastern-Bloc look, a different ballistic mask in particular. It wouldn't be a constantly-on thing, I would want it to be only employed on occasions where it made practical sense.

Same goes for CBRN stuff- I know that Mono and Big's characters are both pretty heavy on that stuff, and it's even a part of their fatigues in some way, with it being sterilized and CBRN-ready. I will say it actually in the same context as the bulking-up- they'll only be using it where it makes practical sense to do so, where it may be that they need a dedicated supply of CBRN is required and it so happens that they've got full combat fatigues beyond their regular cleansed and neutered gear that are capable of that.
Echo, I am liking that character. The HK416C doesn't see nearly enough use as it should.

One idea that I am punting now, and it's a really curious one, is that of a provisional loadout, either a breacher or explosives specialist in particular that could be using a heavier loadout of armor than usual. As in, think the Demolitions from MoH- reinforced ballistic helmet, blast armor, nothing overbearing (it's not a fucking EOD suit to start with), but this:

This isn't someone who runs round in streets shooting at people like some God (Big, keep your trap shut here), but basically gives them additional explosives and ballistic protection because they're involved with breaching or uhh, explosives. It's there as a passive protection, so that if the first thing they do run into is a shotgun, they won't be blown apart, or at least, the chance of grievous wounds are far reduced. The way I am proposing it is not someone makes a character centered around that build- but for example, will be something given to one or two characters on a "loud" operation, where the team is involved in particularly heavy operations, while on stealth they'd be with regular kit.
Hurrah.

The opening to this RP is something I have worked out, it's going to be pretty strong stuff- it begins around Tuesday, and I will post one last OOC post at that time, which I will want people to like as a last-call. The Prologue, "Echolocation" is not going to be more than three-four pages long, though this is a huge exception to how future parts will be worked out, of course, and will not heavily feature mission planning or co-ordination, aiming to really throw the RP straight to the point, while of course offering some idea of what the RP is like in the long term. All I can say about it is that your operators are all going to need desert fatigues...and some earplugs.

I will begin liking CSes I think are good to go for the RP, and I'm going to start working on helping people that have CSes that are lacking in places, or may still need some work via PM. This isn't the majority of you, but one or two, with a little work can bring up your CSes. I should also mention, I know, some CSes aren't finished- these CSes may get a like merely because I know that the rest is going to be likely just housework, such as history or tidbits of equipment, and I would expect it to be finished at some point.
Because instead of going "Bang" it goes fucking "BAANG". And usually, means it hits harder, even if it screws the barrel with those rounds.

Oh wow, that's pretty awesome, actually- the Mk16 is a pretty sweet weapon, and whilst Merlin's SCAR-H is different, it is it's brother in that weapons family. I'd love to shoot some guns one day if I ever visit 'Merica.
My CS is done I think, I'll have this RP launched fingers crossed by Monday/Tuesday, if a little later then I'll bring any interviews/assessments of CSes finished by that point. For the love of God, if you make a CS like mine, you possibly have too much time on your hands as I found out. Once you start googling Surefire flashlights, you never go back....help plz :D
Great to see people pushing on. It's a hell of a lot of work on my end, as I have barely finished Merlin and Nikolaj yet, and have a couple more interviews to finish off. One thing that I would say though- I do know that a lot of people have gone for the same role, and it's difficult to start filtering it through on my end, as I'm finding it hard. What I will say is, I would like for everyone to have a base loadout that involves an assault rifle, in whatever format, and from there, I can start to see what I can do for throwing out specializations towards people's way.

I have noted that there are a few overlaps, in particular with certain roles going over. This is predominantly my fault I'd think- I really didn't set out a basic brief of who had what, and in turn, it's sort of translated into people taking stuff that is taken, and so on. I have to apologise wholly for that aspect of things- the roles list is still a work in progress, and I think that once the last CSes are up, I will get back and make sure that if they do exist, they're practical for the squad's needs.

EDIT- make that I have now come very close to finishing Merlin and Nikolaj. I really wanted to drop it in with Nikolaj, that he is actually one of the operators that Jan shot. It's a hyperlink moment in two characters I have had, though I don't want anyone else following down in the same vein that I did there if that's okay with everyone- I do want to keep most of the RP separated from Lima, so this is purely for anyone who was in Lima's info. I will say that provisionally, Nikolaj will be the 2IC of the team regardless of ranks- this will change as we finish what will be the opening segment of the RP, and I will do that for what is basically convenience's sake, due to the workings of the start of the RP. I am looking forward to it, and will be effectively keeping most people in the dark on what it is as I really want to play a blinder with the events that will happen. After that, I will be in contact with any RPers and working away on the next part of the RP- I have a plot in mind, but anything that they'd like to develop in their own characters or add as a possibility.
