Current 10+ years of an RP idea, finally finished, on 10.10.2025. Goodnight Raven Squad, you were the best, wildest, most silly near future SOF RP that lived on the guild, and you got a worthy send off :)

Bio

I've RP'd for the best part of over 15 years now here on the Guild, and particularly like military settings, both contemporary, past and near future. I have even dabbled in a little more experimental RPs, as well as created a plethora of 1x1s over my time in the guild. I like creating RPs with a distinct flavour- and often shift between narrative-led RPs to semi-randomised plots. I've been more a GM lately than a player, and don't really lean into fandom- instead, exploring my own universes lifting themes from other source material.

My main interests are military-themed, near-future RPs, with a focus on technology. But I'm beginning to push what that RP idea looks like- taking inspiration from lots of media and focussing on the fun, indulgent side of RP, whilst also exploring the lows and emotional side.

Raven Squad is a project over seven years in the making, and focusses on a class-based, eccentric yet half-grounded near future special forces team that acts as a response team where you can't send any special forces team in. It's incredibly dumb, incredibly loose, and yet, has delivered some of my favourite plot points in RPG. A brainless action flick a la John Wick and Kingsman meets a complex thriller with a fun left turn in it, Raven has been the culmination of over a decade of loving special forces RPG, gaming influences and other silliness in a package that has provided players with something quite different to a normal military themed RPG. While at an end, this is an RP that is a signature- it's silly as hell, takes itself barely seriously, and is what peak fun military RPG to me should be.

Delta Hyper is a love letter to Wipeout, F1's Drive to Survive (Netflix) and contemporary Formula One, with influences from solarpunk, cyberpunk, transhumanism and other posthumanist concepts. An RP that follows pilots in their ups and downs, it's a story that hasn't got me playing an actual character, but framing the camera at each pilot (played by others), and presenting it as if it were a documentary. Lifting elements from TTRPG, this is a Racing RPG like no other and no parallel exists- using dice rolls and randomisation, with a stats-driven system to generate race results, rather than actually RPing the races, players experience the fast-paced, dynamic world of anti-gravity racing. This means that come Qualifying and Race, the results are genuinely a surprise to everyone- and based on decisions made through dilemmas and decisions made between races. Friendships, rivalry, the glamour and even a little political undertone play out in 2094, in a colourful, utopian future that focuses on the fight to take first place.

Then there's Tactical Breach Wizards: Fireteam Hex. First use of any set IP as a formal setting, this is an RP that offers a darker mirror to Raven Squad, focussing on the other side of the equation- unlikely heroes in an uncomfortable position. I don't normally do fantasy, but the world, the lore, the feeling of the characters and the ability to write a comedy just was too difficult to pass up. An RP that focuses on a group running away from a variety of threats as wanted mercenary wizards in the middle of a post-revolution, Eastern-Europe adjacent 1990s to present Polavia.

Lastly, Dispatch: Heroes of Claremont. This is another IP-adjacent world, albeit drawing on a different setting and a new cast of superheroes. As my "first" proper superhero RP, this combines workplace comedy, a Storyteller-lite system and a fun, diverse, and large cast together in a dynamic, diverse setting.

I'm pretty flexible and try and get back to people on ideas and responses, but sometimes, I may become very busy and it will take some time till I am un-busy. I aim to clear posts within a week!

Funny enough- a char similarly in universe used a Tesla-coil like electricity weapon as an area of effect or bolt weapon (charged to change the effect of how powerful it is)- virtually like portable thunder. Perhaps a little down the line it evolves more info your idea so definitely definitely doable- but it could start life as a highly charged railgun of sorts?

We're up and running.

Foxtrot Oscar (FO) is a mysterious task force, working against the forces of international anarchist terrorist groups in the near future, often who are armed with quite fantastical and advanced technology- or nefarious political aims. Al-Qaeda it isn't, so in come our operatives. In a world where mechs are prototypes, exoskeletons, jump-packs, optical cloaking and various other technologies are around the corner, the tide is coming in....and FO stands in its path.

Where an SF team cannot penetrate, they come in. When a politician needs to go, they come in. When you have eight foot mechanized armored soldiers trying to breach a high-security Gulag and you need those fuckers removed, they come in. Foxtrot Oscar views the world as a little too conventional, and when things are beyond the sanity of any force on the planet, they exist just to keep things from spilling over. They're the people that stop the world ending as we know it. Problem is, they're a little dysfunctional- and well, they're not all the most....professional of soldiers. Or spies, or agents, or well, anyone who is capable of getting involved.

So, they are beyond what you would normally call a sane bunch of men and women, but are what little stands between some of the most technologically advanced and well armed forces of natures nobody even hears about on the news from making the world a miserable place. Not just "terrorists". Far more sinister forces are at work, and sending Delta Force or the SAS is no longer the solution. For an asymmetrical and superior force, you need your own mirror. But you're gonna have a band of entertaining misfits if you want the best of the best. A lot of people who don't play to the rules, or make their own. This fractuous team is Foxtrot Oscar- and you're invited for the ride.

Sometime in the near future, your character was ex-Special Forces, ex-Mercenary, ex-whatever. But they were picked, selected even, and thrown into Foxtrot Oscar for a very good reason. They were more than just a regular operator, soldier, asset, mercenary. They were far beyond that. Picked into a unit that defends from the threats that cannot even be taken by the world's most secure security agencies on as a sane solution, to make sure that the world sleeps tight and doesn't turn into a violent fireball. Without it even coming on the nightly news. Oh, and of course, being a little less than conventional. To keep evil bastards away from innocent people, look no further than to Foxtrot Oscar. And there is a bigger threat than they've ever faced before coming.

Character Sheet and Intro:

Remember, your character fits in a certain class of elite operator- while eccentric, there's a little rooting to make them at least somewhat human, right? Your character didn't volunteer for FO- they got picked, likely drugged and dragged in through the door. A Special Forces soldier, a Mercenary, an elite assasin, a master spy, even a gangster, hell, Raven Squad seems to draw a variety of people in but they're the best at that thing they do, and that is stopping a threat to the globe.

Threatened with the option of having the memory removed of even being pulled in and left on the street or joining the team, plus going through a gruelling five days of preliminary selection called the "The Devil's Cooker" (that breaks almost 90% of the people that have ever been selected to join), your character is very, very capable. Something on the level of an double-length triathlon in a physical test, coupled to intense mental, psychological and technical tests and training, from firearm use to hand to hand potency that really defines your character as next level, truly unbreakable and unfailling under pressure. The drug dose usually knocks any that fail back to their usual reality, but for those who make it, they are selected to join.

Consider that a high bar for your character's entry. If they made it that far, they joined the very insignificantly small number of individuals capable of having the most advanced technology and equipment known to the world's intelligence agencies at their disposal, and the responsibility of saving the world....rather too frequently.

Background:

Not much is known about Foxtrot Oscar as an organisation- only that it has shadowy links to the previous "Team Scimitar", a prior semi-independent mercenary group that similarly fought against a range of terrorist threats and organisations.

Though since those days, plenty has evolved in terms of technology and equipment used- and the organisation appears to silently select those who it wants through a contact named "Oracle", who recruits operators on a selective basis. FO after all, is the boogeyman that spies, special forces and various government agencies can't even confirm exists.

Based out of a formerly abandoned mining facility high in the Swiss Alps, FO has access to a short runway, as well as a bunker complex built into the side of the mountain- housing a firing range, armoury, R&R facilities (including a pool, of all things!), training rooms and brefing facilities that allow it to be a home away from home- out of sight and visuals from prying eyes.

(EDIT- Oh, and can you post all chars into the OOC- I'll review and accept them, once they're good post them into the Char thread!)
Looks like this is picking up interest (from this and the other interest check)! What sort of characters, roles would you be interested in? I'll post up an OOC tomorrow as it appears there are enough people to get the ball rolling, and I'll start building on what we have so far.
@PPQ Purple

Kinda- I wouldn't go as far as that given I'm not as auteur-like as Kojima (can anyone understand that guy's head?), but it pinches aspects of that madness in some aspects! It has a little bit of lore and OC content, but plays more like an action movie more than his works might. Still a bag of fun though, and certainly embraces his style of kooky cool.

@AEC Armored Car

Ehhh, not really sure- it isn't so much an anime RP if you noticed, which is what I think you're refering to. See the description- I notice you're two posts in, appreciate the enthusiasm but that isn't what this is I'm afraif!
