Fun freaking fact I just discovered.

Garth Nix's website has(in the bonus material section) essays by the author about Free Magic, Charter Magic, Bells and every other bloody thing.
Since we have some more info, can we start posting CSs?
Should I wait for you to post before continuing, @Yorutenchi?
My character would be a Northern Ancelstierran, and a former student of Wyverly College. She crossed the wall some time ago and took up Necromancy out of a typical sort of morbid curiosity. She didn't understand what it would mean for her Charter mark, and now it is corrupted, though not beyond repair.

She wants to remove the taint of Free Magic, but keeps finding herself using it out of necessity, and is trapped in a vicious cycle, not even able to cross the wall back to her home country.
Quite excited, obviously.
I think that's the name of the story, actually. Beyond the Wall might be the name of the book.
This is why I want to read Clariel. It obviously expounds upon facets of the world's magic that were barely touched on in the original trilogy.

By the by, has anyone read, I think it's called Beyond the Wall? It's a short story in one of his collections that follows Nick as his Free Magic tainted blood accidentally awakens a construct in Ancelstierre.
So when one dabbles in free magic, their charter mark is corrupted. I have two questions that might have been answered in Clariel(or I may have just missed) if anyone has any insight.

How quickly is the mark corrupted? Is it a binary state(it either is or isn't) or are there degrees? Is it instantaneous? We know the Abhorsen's blood lets them dabble without corruption.

Secondly, is it possible for your mark to be purified?
I actually have not read Clariel. I just finished rereading the series, and Clariel was released after I originally read them. The library's copy is still out, so I'm waiting.

And I'm glad you're back, I hope you're not miffed about me resurrecting an old thread like this.
Well since there's some other interest, I thought I might posit the idea of of a series set another 50-70 years after the first one, where Ancelstierre is an equivalent to our modern world, but the Old Kingdom hasn't really changed much(besides civilization expanding further since the restoration). Internet has made the existence of magic to the North much more widely known, and there are groups from Ancelstierre who actively seek it out now, which cause problems when they think the Old Kingdom is going to be all magic and wonderment, and don't understand the horrors that live there.

There's also room for the Abhorsen family to expand some. If we assume Lirael has children at some point, then both her and the Royal family have their blood and could produce possible Abhorsens In Waiting.

Half a century out there's a lot of room for our own plot ideas.
