Handlers are all in some way affiliated with the Church, but they’re free to have their own motives and goals. Being a handler is a very high risk high reward job that are linked to intelligence agencies, with the church banking on their loyalty ultimately being to them. But there’s definitely a possibility of a handler and their # being linked to humanitarian projects if their miracle is more suited to it. When I ran this as a private 1x1, we had a number that was capable of rewinding an object in time and they helped in wartime areas.

The year is 2021, the downfall of humanity is at our doorstep and scientists around the world clamor every day attempting to undo the destruction we ourselves have wreaked upon our own home. While hardships like poverty and world hunger are still very apparent, the forces of the world instead press their resources into more devastating matters like rising sea levels and ever increasing temperatures every year. Many small island countries have had to completely evacuate their populations and migrate to the larger landmasses causing already bursting areas to deal with overpopulation leading to rising crime-rates on a global scale. Soon many smaller governments began to break down and be consumed by larger countries, others were destroyed from within altogether.

It had literally become H E L L on Earth.

In our darkest moment, the powers of the world began to shift into places it had not for centuries. The Catholic Church reached out its hand to the impoverished and weak, offering them salvation from the world in exchange for their faith. It had become known as The Second Great Awakening and the drastic increase of religious sects around the world skyrocketed within a matter of months. It wasn't long until the church had completely consumed Italy, and their influence spread throughout the Europe completely overtaking many of it's smaller countries and territories sparing only France, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The religious superpower of the Catholic Church would soon grow enough presence and capital to place their fingers in the decision making of the crumbling world, and it was the Pope himself that pressed forward a single idea. And that idea is the true beginning of our story.

1: The Numbers

Subjects 1 through 12 have all demonstrated positive results. Introducing them to one another was a brilliant idea by the handlers, now they collectively refer to themselves as family. That is hardly the case, each subject was extracted from somewhere different around the world. But on the other hand they are experiencing this trauma as a group, and nothing brings people together like shared trauma. Phase 2 will begin exactly a month from today, we are expecting a mortality rate of 50 to 60%. Hopefully those that are lost during the procedures are the more unruly. Subject 11 in particular would not be missed by myself nor many of my fellow researchers. Updates will continue monthly as instructed by the upper brass, do not expect as much elaboration in those reports however. I dislike writing about these fucking creatures honestly, so I welcome the need for briefness in our letters to the church.

Phase 2 went off without a hitch, we lost fewer of the subjects than calculated. Subject 1 seems to be completely psychologically broken due to the loss of Subject 4. Lead Researcher Takizawa believes we should prevent further communication between the subjects to halt the degradation process. We will attempt to rehabilitate Subject 1 for the next few weeks and if this is seen to be wasted effort then they will be recycled for a future subject. Subject 4's corpse will be harvested for test materials, perhaps being purposed for Subject 13 or 14. Phase 3 will once again occur next month and it'll unfortunately be harmless to the subjects, though I pray for higher mortality rates in the future. These little monsters are slowly becoming less and less human as more testing is done to them.

Phase 3 was a failure on a development standpoint, but on the other hand Subject 1 has made a swift recovery because of it. The Promised Children Project will be deemed a success if Phase 4 ends without any human casualties. If it ends up being a success, we will go public with the projects results and present them to the world. But like I said in a prior entry, these things are no longer human anymore. The subjects don’t even refer to eachother as humans any longer, instead referring to themselves as “Numbers”. Whatever keeps the little shits quiet and easy to handle. One of our blood work girls keeps calling Subject 7 a little angel. She's an idiot, these things are genetic anomalies and the fact that they're alive is insane as is. Subnote: That same blood work girl is constantly stared at by Subjects 1, 2, and 3, those are the oldest and thus they are most likely feeling some form of attraction to the nurse.

2: A Dying World

T H E U N I T E D S T A T E S & A F F I L I A T E D
The U.S has gone through their own difficulties over these years. While their campaigns in other countries have ceased they still deal with internal battles against those who oppose the establishment. Financially they are on a downward trend due to the infighting, and the growing power of the Catholic Church continuously seems to sap away the support of the people as they do in other countries. However, the U.S have surprisingly been making a more positive impact on the world as of lately due to recent changes in leadership and a sweep of political corruption. Most notably their current president has been taking steps into assisting destabilized countries with food and other vital resources and offering funds as tight as they may be, to allied nations with similar agendas to their own. The new president is quite secretive, refusing to make public appearances or even fully disclose information about himself other than his name "Mathias E. Biersworth" which has in turn caused lots of conspiracy theories to surface within his own country about himself. Another notable bit of information is the creation of the "51st" an artificial island planted in the center of the Gulf of Mexico, this new state hosts a number of testing grounds for the country's geoengineering projects along with other secret facilities hidden within.

With the ever increasing ocean levels large populations from countries like Taiwan, and The Philippines were forced to migrate to unaffected countries nearby. Japan's landmass had already shrunk quite a bit and at a certain point immigrants began to be turned away due to overpopulation. While their current Prime Minister is a very good man and has placed numerous resources into assisting in the well-being of the Japanese people, the amount of people was impossible to house and feed. This forced many to instead turn to places like Korea and China which at the time had been going through political struggles. China's resources were rich but the country wished to seize the opportunity of utilizing immigrants for cheap labor and forced military service, while on the other hand Korea offered those whom traveled to their country the opportunity to live there in peace under the condition that they cut contact with any outsiders and selected a desperately needed occupation. The largest influx of course made their way to Korea, though they are reaching their maximum capacity soon as well.

E U R O P E , R U S S I A & T H E C A T H O L I C C H U R C H
Europe and the Russian Territories are a different beast compared to the rest of the world. As the church's fingers reached their way to mainland Asia, the only thing that stood in their way was the militaristic monolith of Russia. While the Orthodox presence is still rightly strong within the country's borders, the true reason for their opposition to their rise in power is due to their own wish for conquest themselves. And in this Russia has found a military opponent in which many support, while other countries clamor to research ways to save the world and slow the apocalypse Russia instead dumps every man and resource into advanced weaponry. On the other hand you have the Church themselves who control more than half of the European countries and the military forces they own. The Pope's headquarters of course stands reinforced and ever populated in Italy, which although is greatly smaller than before, boasts as the most prosperous country in the world all in thanks to God himself. Few countries have yet fallen to the growing religious empire, the U.K struggles to retain independence as their economy crumbles and farmland continues to disappear, Spain is currently dealing with a civil-war between those who oppose the church and those who support it, while France stands as a sort of "envoy" for the rest of the world to communicate directly with the Clergy in Italy.

After the failed final testing phase on Amadeus Island the surviving promised children had their memories erased and were dispersed to the church and their associated allies. #1 is the only Number that has thus far been revealed to the world and has become a pseudo-figurehead for the Catholic Church so the Pope may puppetmaster things elsewhere in the world. #1 has displayed his M I R A C L E to the public, this ability being the healing of himself and others through the administration of his own blood. P.R members of the Clergy have taken to calling him the messiah, and the promised children themselves to be messengers of god who've come from the heavens to bring the faithful to the gates of Heaven themselves. This is obviously just propaganda to sway the masses in favor of these creatures so newly introduced to the public eye within society. As for the others, we shall assume they are scattered around the world being utilized for different purposes in each country. They have been harshly conditioned to obey their keepers and their memories of prior events has been completely o v e r w r i t t e n. But what if you haven't forgotten? The meaningless games of life and death that these humans play, and have played for hundreds of thousands of years. Why should they involve you? Are you simply a pawn brought unto this world to be slid across checkered tile, subservient until the moment of death? Why were you even born, and the only family you have ever known was stripped away from you. Was everything you were taught back then a lie? What are these thoughts flooding your mind? What is your purpose? Why are you so hungry? How can you make it stop?

The Morningstar | #??? is capable of creating and manipulating a basketball sized sphere of molten energy. The sphere is able to be freely controlled from a distance and is near impossible to extinguish. #11 seems to have a degree of vision through her miniature star and can utilize this for reconnaissance making this ability quite versatile and optimal for military use.

Sin

Wrath is associated with relentless anger, fire, and indiscriminate destruction. The sin is as natural as the flame itself and burns within the hearts of every human whether they like it or not.

Lust is associated with blood and the desire to spread a fragment of one’s self in either a real or metaphysical way. It is the sin of propagation, and exists in all biological creatures as a means to keep their species alive.

Sloth is associated with earth and stone, while being defined as the state of being directionless, surrendering oneself to inertia and the will of others. This can manifest in the form of an unwillingness or refusal to change one's ways, or in the form of one who simply follows orders or acts on behalf of another.

Gluttony is typically associated with nature, searching for nutrients, never to be sated by them, as its roots will continue to grow and need a greater supply. It appears as an insatiable hunger or desire to consume something endlessly without being fulfilled.

Gloom is associated with water and the pull of Gloom being compared to sinking into the deep ocean. It is a sense of melancholy that is easy to sink into, yet difficult to pull yourself back out, against the water's suffocating pressure and the awareness of the futility of struggling.

Pride is the sin of overconfidence, stemming from a strong belief in one's infallibility. Symbolically it takes on the shape of a wheel, the symbol of development and humanity's unyielding pursuit of perfection. The sin's associated with man-made creations like steel and technology.

Envy is the sin of focusing on one's inadequacy compared to others, or a sense of resentment at another's success. It takes root in many facets but is mostly associated with the crippling paralysis of feeling one’s inferiority. Due to this, the sin is typically affiliated with the use of electricity.

E.G.O (Extermination of Geometrical Organ)

EGO is a type of personalized equipment manifested from an individual's psyche and take on traits of their personality and traumas. They usually take the form of massively powerful weapons or armor that are used by fixers and other agents of the City to combat distortions.

Distortions

The exact origin of the Distortion Phenomenon is unknown, while the majority of cases of it, and public knowledge of it, spread after the events of the White Nights and Dark Days. Distortions have been known to predate this event. A notable example of this would be the Bloodfiends, Distortions which are implied to originate from the abnormality Nosferatu.

”Would you fetch me some soaked towels, little sparrow?” Mura’s words quietly dribbled out as she pointed to a young human boy mixing herbs in a large boiling pot.

Young may have been a bit broad. He looked to be in his late teens or early twenties with blonde hair and deep blue irises. His complexion and physiognomy would spill the secret of his western lineage, likely the child of a foreigner who may have died in Japan or needed to leave him behind for one reason or another. He did not speak, maybe he was a mute or perhaps because he didn’t have the confidence within himself to speak in the presence of his proprietress.

Nonetheless, he jumped at her request and pattered quickly on the freshly scrubbed and polished footboards, sliding along the way until he reached a single panel closet to pluck the pristinely white towels out. She didn’t specify an exact amount, so a stack of four would be brought to her just as quickly as he left— bowing deeply once he stood before Mura.she wasn’t all too much shorter than the boy, standing somewhere closer to five feet in height than him.

”More than necessary, quite the overachiever aren’t you?” The faintest of smiles tugged up at the corners of her red-painted lips. The expression was small, but it radiated a genuine warmth that the boy dubbed Little Sparrow basked in.

Her left arm extended out, wrapped in what seemed to be thin painted wood and cloth. It all seemed to be bound together with little ropes with small polished stone magetama dangling from red knotted tassels. The woman’s hand landed upon the mess of roughly trimmed blonde hair and gave his scalp a few soft pats, her crimson slit eyes remaining on him for perhaps a few moments too long— but all the while he did not seem to mind. His payment was given and thus she turned with the towels and tucked them over her now interlocked arms, then made her way to each of the open air bathrooms to set towels down for those within to use at their leisure.

It wouldn’t take long for the task to be completed, and once she was done she’d return to the front desk where a small wooden pipe and ash tray remained for her. She’d lift it up towards her lips, chewing on the open end for some time as she watched the door for new customers to enter— sucking some smoke out to blow rings in idle boredom. Waiting for something interesting to happen today. Right above the door’s entryway was a massive beam of wood where over a dozen ravens roosted to watch passersby on the road. The outside of the onsen looked quite traditional other than the new-age painting style of graffiti stylized lettering displaying the facility’s name.
