║ Appearance ║Mariah is a very smol girl, and looking at her parents and even her grandparents, it’s not entirely a surprise. She’s barely five foot even, and weighs barely one-hundred pounds. Given how slender and tiny she is, it’s no surprise that she can always be found wearing a grey zip-up sweater, with two pockets (each equipped with handwarmers), and jeans. Underneath the sweater, she wears different t-shirts advertising her favorite bands and albums. Some of her favorites are t-shirts with Eddy, Iron Maiden’s mascot, on the front, a Back in Black t-shirt, and a Stone Temple Pilots tee. Most of these t-shirts are black, which is not exactly her first choice, but whatever. It works.
She commonly wears a carefully
knitted wool cap, which her mother made her years ago. Mariah has a habit of chewing on the ends, and occasional whapping her friends with them. Long ago, when the children were in fourth grade, Mariah vowed that she would never remove her cap when the wintery months began, in mid November, until they ended in early April. To this day, she has kept this promise, wearing it in class even when teachers have asked her to remove. As of her junior year, they’ve given up. The tiny girl will
not be separated from the thing that gives her ears life when the chilled air wishes to touch her with death.
Similarly, her mother knitted her a
scarf, and a few
pairs, of
mittens. Mariah is not a huge fan of the cold--it’s super effective to her due to how small she is. She thrives in the summer months where she can flaunt her band tees and enjoy life, but during the winter months, she’s basically constantly wrapped in a burrito of clothes.
During the wintery months, she wears a pair of black rubber boots, and during the summer months, she has different pairs of flats that she wears. She owns one or two pairs of heels, though she rarely wears them. They’re… weird.
Traditionally speaking, Mariah can be found in the school halls, huddled next to the heater, bundled up in her sweater, scarf, hat, and mittens. Please only approach her if you come bearing hot cocoa, she’s probably upset and chilly.

What You See:
To the untrained eye, Mariah Carter is the quintessential social butterfly. She easily blends from friend group to friend group and is cool with most everyone. She’s generally considered by her peers and teachers to be a sweetheart. She doesn’t fully understand the ideas of things like depression and hatred--she doesn’t hate anything (except for the smell of coffee beans), and tends to like mostly everyone. There’s rarely a moment when she’s talking to someone that her sweet smile fades from her lips.
She’s always honest, sometimes to the point of bluntness, very genuine and straightforward with her words. If she doesn’t like something, she’ll quickly and clearly express those feelings, she’ll do the same if she does like something, and will open and happily offer constructive criticism in most situations. While she doesn’t have any herself, Mariah is excellent at keeping secrets, and doesn’t mind being an ear for any of her classmates, or even people above or below her in the grade spectrum.
Thoughtful and friendly, Mariah has made a habit out of going to the office and (politely) demanding usage of the PA system to announce the birthday of all her classmates when the day comes around. What? Someone has to drive unity around here...
What I Know:
To the trained eye, Mariah Carter is the quintessential social butterfly. For the most part, Mariah’s honesty shines through in most of the things she does, and there’s truly no hidden personality beneath the surface. There are small things that she doesn’t tell everyone, like her dissatisfaction with her grades on occasion, which range from the rare D+ to the occasional A-. She worries about the future, but the most part focuses instead on the present, keeping herself happy.
Perhaps, deep down, she used to be annoyed by people underestimating her because she’s an adorable, loving little ball of sunshine, but no longer. She accepts her fate as a tiny girl, and is constantly trying to find ways to fight the heat.
Another thing the girl does that she doesn’t advertise is always keep a mixed bag of gummy bears and worms crammed into her sweater pocket, which feed and sustain her throughout the day. Brach’s, of course, the other brands just don’t compare--though she admits a bag of Albanese every once in a while isn’t all that bad.
All in, Mariah is herself. One in a million, a genuine caring young woman who always keeps a smile on her face and does her best to better everyone’s days.

- Ooh, dislikes, huh? Now we’re talking my language! Strawberry kool aid is gag worthy. Actually, strawberries in general...
- Wub step is pretty GARBO.
- People who don’t fully grasp that AC/DC’s album Back in Black is the pinnacle of music.
- When people litter in the store let me tell you what, that grinds my gears.
- Uh… people who wear sunglasses year long…
- The cold. Hello? Have you ever been cold?
- Last but not least, the smell of coffee beans. Coffee itself, drowned in creamer, is okay. But coffee beans? Why?
Three months before Mariah was born, her father was on trial for various drug related charges. Honestly, she’s never really cared about the specifics. He did something bad, that’s all she really knows, and she doesn’t want to press very hard on the matter. If her mother wanted her to know, she suspects she would have been told years ago, and she still doesn’t talk to her father enough for him to give her a straight answer.
But, that’s unimportant. What’s important is that after four and a half long years together, Mariah’s mother was left alone as a single mother. She didn’t know what she was going to do; her fiancee’s parents were no help, they wanted nothing to do with the poor pregnant girl and her soon to be born child--they’d barely wanted to see the young couple since they’d been told about the pregnancy (out of wedlock). So, Sophia Hopper had called her parents back home in Westworth Colorado, wanting to know if she could come home.
Even with the pregnancy, even with the criminal fiancee, Mariah’s grandparents were more than happy to accept them back into the fold. So, she’d gotten on the bus, promising that she’d stay faithful to her fiancee before she left, and then she’d went from Texas back to the warm, welcoming home of her parents.
Mariah’s birth was easy, and she was healthy, happy, and had a loving environment to grow up in. While she was growing up, she and her father were pen pals. Given the nature of his crimes, mostly non-violent, her mother saw no reason to hide his daughter from him. Besides, she still loved him. Throughout their correspondence, Mariah’s father did his best to have an impact on her life.
He largely chose to do this by sending her CDs to listen to. Back In Black, Highway to Hell, Cowboys from Hell, Number of the Beast, Rust in Peace, you know… classics. This helped shaped Mariah’s musical tastes, leading her to enjoy a flavor of music that includes mostly expertly shredded guitars and smooth basslines. On occasion, she’ll listen to a rap song, but generally speaking she’d prefer a good old fashioned AC/DC song anytime. In her opinion, Back in Black is possibly the closest the human race will ever get to composing and recording musical perfection.
When she turned nine years old, her mother purchased her an acoustic guitar and Mariah threw herself at the craft, wanting to one day be as good as Hendrix, Mustaine, or--if she was lucky enough, Jimmy Page. She’s kept at it ever since, even taking her father’s advice (delighted that his daughter was learning a musical instrument), and learned classical piano, and took up the violin in school. By thirteen years old, she had an electric guitar all her own, and wasn’t that bad.
Of course, in the present day, she’s still learning--but hey, she ain't half bad. In fact, she’s pretty good, and commonly records herself playing the lead guitar part to, and attempting to sing, cover songs from some of the bands her father has introduced her to, then uploading them to YouTube. Mostly for self-preservation. She isn’t that popular, maybe some day.
Just under two months ago, her father was released from prison. He moved up to Colorado with his daughter and wife. With the help of his wife’s parents, his daughter, and his wife, Mariah’s father is attempting to reintegrate himself into society.
Mariah is just enjoying the time she has left with her father, friends, and family. Though she loves her small town thoroughly, she aspires to attend an out of state college to flex her wings and see what the rest of the world is. Plus, somewhere out there, she has to have paternal grandparents. They can’t suck that much.

Takes the occasional extra after school lesson with the music teacher, sometimes on guitar, sometimes on violin. Occasionally, she hangs back and uses and abuses the superior equipment for quick and dirty jam sessions.
