"This match will be a 3-on-3 single battle with no time limit," the official stated, "Only the challenger can switch Pokémon. Begin!"
"Slugma, go!"
Shiranui scanned Slugma with his Pokédex. "Slugma, the Lava Pokémon. Slugma does not have any blood in its body. Instead, intensely hot magma circulates throughout this Pokémon's body, carrying essential nutrients and oxygen to its organs."
"Electrike, I choose you!" Flannery sent her Slugma out and Shiranui responded with his Electrike.
"Begin!"
"Slugma, Light Screen!"
"Electrike, Electro Ball!" Electrike sprung into action and created an orb of high-current electricity. The orb was launched and Slugma was electrocuted into a one-hit knockout.
"Impressive strategy taking advantage of Slugma's speed," Flannery commented, "Try this one on for size. Go Numel!"
"Electrike, return; Hoshi, I choose you!" Flannery switched the downed Slugma for her Numel and Shiranui switched Electrike for his Staryu.
"Numel, Sunny Day!"
"Hoshi, Scald!" The Staryu pointed its uppermost limb at Numel and blasted out some boiling hot water, inundating Numel. It took a full minute of waiting for the damage to set in and Numel fainted.
"I expected you to use a Water type at some point in our battle. Torkoal, go!"
Shiranui scanned Torkoal with his Pokédex. "Torkoal, the Coal Pokémon. Torkoal generates energy by burning coal. It grows weaker as the fire dies down. When it is preparing for battle, this Pokémon burns more coal."
"Hoshi, return; Electrike, I choose you!" Flannery switched Numel out and sent in Torkoal and Shiranui switched his Staryu out for his Electrike. What came out was still glowing with a bright white light. Shiranui was overjoyed that Electrike was evolving. Electrike grew in size and the glow subsided to reveal a Manectric.
"Manectric, the Discharge Pokémon and the evolved form of Electrike. Manectric is constantly discharging electricity from its mane. The sparks sometimes ignite forest fires. When it enters a battle, this Pokémon creates thunderclouds."
"Torkoal, Overheat!"
"Manectric, Electro Ball! Mega Ring activate!" Shiranui activated the keystone on his Mega Ring and the Manectite that was worn as a collar started glowing as well. An orb of energy surrounded Manectric and shattered to reveal what looked like a lightning bolt in canine form. Mega Manectric conjured an orb of electricity from her mane that was even more powerful and launched it at Torkoal. Torkoal was electrocuted into a one-hit knockout thanks to the large disparity in their Speed stats.
"You've shown excellent skills in battle and for that, I award you the Heat Badge," Flannery congratulated.
"Thanks Flannery," replied Shiranui, adding the Heat Badge to his collection. He noted to himself to give Manectric a grooming and talk with Hoshi about evolution.
