Bio

Hey all, JB here.

I'm a DM for a large number of games here on RPG, as well as a player in several others. Many of the games I run are overly complex, or they involve Dungeons and Dragons (which is also overly complex!).

I work 40+ hours a week, and am the proud father of two tiny terrors named Chibi and Chibette and married to my beautiful Wifey. As such, I am quite busy more often than not. I typically write 2-5 paragraphs per reply and try to maintain an excellent level of grammar. If you noticed me glancing at your profile, I probably was looking to see if you would be a good match for my RPing style. Even if I didn't send a PM to you, feel free to send one back!

I enjoy 1x1 RPs and small groups. I'm fond of medieval, steampunk, and futuristic settings, and I'll jump into romance, adventure, and slice of life RPs fairly quickly, although supernatural (vampires, werewolves, etc) RPs get old for me pretty quickly. If you're looking for an RP partner and I've glanced at your profile, then I'm most likely willing to give it a shot, but decided against PMing you because I'm actually kinda shy. But I'm always looking for a new friend!

Please feel free to say hi at any time!

@Ms Ravenwinter I certainly have no qualms with a druid or bard instead of a cleric. Although 5e does have some really interesting Cleric Archetypes. I always like having a bard ally.
@Ermine Yeah, I noticed the Exemplar could probably use a little nerfing :P I might take a closer look at it and suggest some nerfs later on. Right now, I'm working on a Hexblade build. The trick is to focus on things that the Warlock isn't normally known for doing... so that could be interesting. I'll probably also create a build for Exemplar and see which I like better.

Also yay, more people! Welcome @Ms Ravenwinter!
@The Harbinger of Ferocity The site being used (Homebrewery) sometimes has issues with various browsers. I suggest trying a different browser and seeing if it works. Chrome is working for me currently.
@The Harbinger of Ferocity Good points all around. I agree with the majority (although I am a bit of a fan of high fantasy). As for class, I was also considering the Hexblade warlock, but I'm going to take a look at the Akashic classes Ermine made. Some of them look quite interesting. If I don’t do one of those and warlock is taken, I may try either one of the new UA sorcerers or the UA druids, depending on need.

In short, I'm flexible.

For new players, I personally recommend classes that do not have a large number of options for each round, at least for the beginning. These "simpler" classes would include Assassin rogue (positioning keeps this class fresh), Battle Maater Fighter (extremely fun to play, and gets more complex over time as you learn), Barbarian (both archetypes - smashing good fun), Champion Fighter (possibly the simplest archetype overall, but very powerful), or maybe a warlock if you want some simple spellcasting. If you are unsure of your abilities, I would avoid any class that prepares magic instead of learning a specific number of spells (can simply get overwhelming), or any class with a large variety of options like bard or beast master ranger. That is not to discourage people from playing those classes; just bear in mind that they are more complicated and will likely need a lot more frequent questions.
@Ermine As for leveling up, I'm again good with whatever. I have had experience with both. Personally, I like a good mix of real EXP combined with plot-bonus EXP. For example, if we're in a dungeon that is for some reason taking a little longer than normal (meaning we run face first into every encounter instead of trying to be sneaky), then we should get some bonus EXP from the extra combats. With only plot-based leveling, things like that generally aren't rewarded. (Alternatively, sometimes EXP is rewarded for clever avoidance of combats. Up to GM.)

Some important questions for character creation:

1. What level will we start at? I've started a few campaigns at lvl 1, and usually it's not much fun (or unique) until we get to around lvl 5 when Extra Attack and stronger cantrips begin. That's just my personal opinion. On the other hand, starting at lvl 1 can give new players a chance to feel out their characters before being dropped into harder, more strategic combats. Of course, it's also much easier to die at lvl 1, since your HP is so low.

2. Will feats be allowed? Technically it's an optional rule, but I've never been in a campaign where they were not allowed.

3. Less about character creation (unless playing a rogue or similar), but will flanking automatically grant advantage? And on the same note, how will combat be handled in PBP? Will we have a map, or use our imaginations for the combats?

I have more particular character-creation questions, but I feel most of those are specific to me or my character, so I'll wait til we get that Discord chat up and running. Speaking of, I have plenty of free time tomorrow, so if we got that chat up sooner rather than later, I can probably get most of my questions out of the way by then.

@Ermine I am up for whatever, but I like the feeling that our choices have consequences. Both positive and negative. Sorta like the consequences of eating squirrels. Sure, it makes for decent pest control, but the heartburn is tremendous.
@JamesMuddy Welcome from another newbie! From what I can see, this site has quite the wide variety of interests - if you make it, they will (probably) come!
@Lady Selune I might be up for this. Can you post more information on what the roles/factions are? Everyone I know plays it a little differently.
@CaughtInTheRiddle Ah, my bad. I misunderstood. A chat program is definitely helpful to get info disseminated and discussed quickly.

@The Harbinger of Ferocity I find that the best thing about 5e is that it is relatively easy for new players to hop on board. I know when I first played 3.5e, I was overwhelmed by all the choices for Skill Ranks, Feats, and non-Core material. Pathfinder has similar issues. 5e is simple because everything on the player side is laid out in pretty clear terms (although some things on the DM side are vague as crap... crafting, anyone?).

@Ermine I'm in, assuming that the setting is reasonable. From what I've seen, you have the DM-ing experience to ensure that it is.
@CaughtInTheRiddle I have a Discord account, but I believe some people prefer the forums for things like ensuring everyone who wants to join has equal access to the information. Also, my free time is limited, so I would not be able to participate in many live sessions / discussions. Skype is better for me since I can use it at work.
