Griffin's life had never been an easy one. His sixteenth birthday was no different except that things went from bad to worse. At five am his father came into his room and pulled him out of his bed. He slowly climbed to his feet. He was used to his father's abuse. It had been happening since his mother's death when he was six. It was a fact he had learned to accept. "I see you go you mark." His father growled.

Griffin looked down on his chest. There it was. Right over his heart. The mark looked like a book. His father took advantage of his distraction. Because he was noe six foot six and taller than his father the older man had to get the upper hand when he could. His father hit him with the belt. Griffin reacted out of instinct. He curled up into a ball to protect himself as much as he could.

Katherin frowned when the boy walked away. But shrugged. She carefully stood up. She unfolded her walking stick. She hasn't been using it because both the housekeeper and the benefactor had guided her and she hadn't felt like she needed it. She didn't like having to depend on the others. She had been mostly independent her whole life. She wouldn't allow that to change. Using her walking stick she slowly made her way over to the boy. Luckily the room was mostly empty so she didn't have to worry about bumping into someone. "This place feels bigger than I'm used to."
