@Noogget You’re playing a very risky game, my dear. Even I am not crazy enough to pull off such stunt.

Sort of in that "let's go out and paint the town red" type of mood.

@Gunther Roughly, yeah. Glad to be back in action for sure. Hope all's been well with you!
Interested.
Big apologies but I have to drop out before even turning in my CS. Maybe next time when I'm not as busy :)
Interested.
Still here too.

"Miss, you may walk back inside."

Nathalie looked up at the officer holding her front door open for her. They had searched her apartment and she was thankful the perpetrator was no longer there, but the fact that someone had been inside her home at all was what truly unnerved her. She hadn't lived in the town long enough to make enemies, so Nathalie believed she had been targeted at random.

"Have you noticed any missing items? Jewelry, cash, or anything of value?"

"I haven't checked, no. After I called I waited for you guys and you were here before I knew it. I could check really fast if that's okay."

"Yes, go ahead and take note of any missing items as I will need to write them down in the report. As you do that, I'll call down our CSI tech to see if she can lift some fingerprints. She'll take yours as well to eliminate them as a match, it cuts down on the time."

"Of course, whatever you need from me. I'll go ahead and take a look around--"

"My apologies, one more thing I need to ask. Do you know who could have done this?"

Nathalie paused for a moment "...no, I'm sorry. I only know a handful of people here, that's including my ex."

"Your ex? Does he have a key to this apartment?"

Jason wouldn't go to this extreme, would he?

"No, he does not. I moved here on my own after our break-"

She was interrupted again, although this time it was due to the officer's radio going off. He reached for the mic, responding to whoever was on the other end. His partner, currently in the room with them as well, lowered his radio to avoid feedback. Nathalie was able to pick up on some of what was being said, and from the sound of it, they had a lead.

"I'm not sure what you overheard just now, but another unit is down in the leasing office and they have footage of a white male picking your lock and entering the apartment. We could wait outside while you change so we can escort you downstairs."

Nathalie had completely forgotten she was still in her pajamas until the officer mentioned it. "Yes, of course, I'll be a minute."

Given the very brief description she'd gotten, Nathalie couldn't help but think of Jason as the one responsible for breaking into her home. If that was the case, he'd done a very stupid thing being that he was, in her opinion, an incredibly smart man.

A sliver of light founds its way through one of the cracks on her bedroom blinds. Nathalie stirred, sighing in response to her sleep being disturbed. She knew she needed black curtains to block out the bright morning sun, but more often than not she was exhausted nearly to the point of unconsciousness, making it rather hard for her to wake up.

A few minutes passed while she lay awake on her bed, debating whether or not she should get up. The fact that her stomach grumbled embarrassingly loud made her consider finally starting her day, but on the other hand, her warm blanket and soft pillow presented a strong argument against such notion.

"Okay, fine."

She finally convinced herself, pulling the covers away in order to sit up on her bed and stretch. Even though she would have preferred to sleep in a bit more, Nathalie realized she wasn't as tired as she originally thought.

What the hell?

Nathalie stood up instantly, her pulse increasing as she tiptoed over to the open door, the one that was supposed to be closed. She stood adjacent to it, her eyes darting from one corner to the next inspecting whatever portion of the hallway was visible. Nathalie then listened for any sounds, but after some time she was met with the same silence as before. Despite her apartment probably being empty--aside from herself, of course--she knew someone had been in there. She wasn't crazy; she knew she'd closed the door the night prior. She did that every night, without breaking her routine. Something about creating a barrier between her and whatever was outside her bedroom that helped her sleep a little better at night. Nathalie was well aware that she was a little too old to be believing in ghost stories, but the scary movies she enjoyed on occasion always got to her and made her imagination run wild.

Unfortunately, she wasn't in fantasy land. Nathalie finally reacted and rushed to her bedside to grab her phone that had been charging up to that point. She dialed 9-1-1, waiting only one ring before the operator picked up.

"9-1-1, what's your emergency?

"Hi, I need the police, someone broke into my apartment."

"You saw something."

His statement caught her off guard. What did he know, exactly? Elena would have never guessed Kamenev was on to something. Hell, she would have never guessed anyone there was on to something. None of the other professors or staff she knew ever brought it up to her, and it's not like she had said anything to anyone else either. But that was because she was a little hard on herself, and people might assume rather unpleasant things about her going off of previous experiences with rumors about some of the staff.

"I did..." Elena finally responded, unsure whether she should be honest or lie to him. If she was going with the latter, then she would simply fabricate a family emergency. That would get him off her back. But on the other hand, maybe Kamenev knew something, or better yet, he himself had seen something too. "But you're right, I need to sit."

In her mind, Elena juggled some theories for the strange occurrence she had just witnessed. She was steady on her feet, slowly making her way inside the break room and passing another professor she'd seen quite a few times in between classes and office hours. Elena greeted him with a half-smile and a nod, figuring it was polite enough since the two were crossing paths for only a couple of seconds. Seeing as the break room was empty, she headed for the nearest table. Elena's face displayed traces of confusion as well as anxiety. She still didn't know what to make of the incident, despite her being a rather pragmatic person. A logical answer would be that her phone somehow picked up a security camera's feed transmitting live to her device, but that wasn't feasible as there was no security camera in that hallway. Elena sighed, taking a seat to address Kamenev.

"Something popped on my screen. When I checked my phone, I was looking at myself--or rather, at the both of us. It's as if someone was standing behind me recording a live transmission. I know it sounds crazy and you probably think I'm losing my mind, but I can't really explain what happened."

She stopped for a moment, her eyes glued to her colleague.

"That's um...not the first odd episode I've had here. But, with that said, this job has had me exhausted beyond imagination, so who's to say I'm not hallucinating?" Elena grimaced, not sure whom she was trying to convince.

"Yeah, yes I am," Nathalie smiled, recognizing the small-framed girl from around the hospital. She looked down momentarily and hung up the phone, unsure whether someone on the other end of the line had picked up. Regardless, it didn't matter; she would simply call them back later. "Actually, I was supposed to stay on shift until the morning but luckily for me, my relief came to work very early. He, on the other hand, is not so lucky."

As Mia stretched, Nathalie realized that she herself needed to stop procrastinating and pick up her exercise routine once more. She'd go on a jog here and there, but she wasn't as committed as before. Ever since she and Jason moved to Ember Grove, Nathalie had put off the gym altogether.

"I don't mean to pry, but are there any nature trails you recommend? I would like to get back into running, well, do more than what I do now. It's my miracle cure to combat stress, you know."
