Blood of the Crown (Medieval Fantasy, Royalty, Magic)

Hello! It's been a while for me, since I last roleplayed, but I have this idea in my head that I really want to try out with a small group. The premise is that, at least in the main land of this story, there is a royal bloodline that has ruled for thousands of years. However, the last king to die supposedly left no heirs to the throne - so one of the nobles have been appointed as lord and steward of the throne until the bloodline can be found once more. No one really thought there was anyone else that could take the throne. Until one day, the lord tasks the knight commanders (your characters) to find a particular adventurer that tends to be alone a lot of the time, claiming that they are a bastard child of the king, but still carry his blood.

There is some lore sorted in my head, but be gentle, since this is mostly a spontaneous idea:
• There is magic, often practiced by wizards. Much like you'd expect, it involves chanting an ancient language and drawing symbols in the air to cast a spell.
• The royal bloodline is an exception to this. They are born with the royal rune upon their right hand that allows them to cast spells without drawing nor the language. Even moreso, in the past, the crown would grant similar runes to their knight commanders, making them a force to be reckoned with.
• Not just anyone can be given a rune and in fact it's a very small portion of the population that can. No one knows the reason for this.
• Knight commanders are normally chosen not only for the ability to have a rune, but for their martial expertise and wisdom on the battlefield. They are literally the highest ranked knight and serve as advisors to the crown, putting them above even nobles.

I love building stories with people and would not mind at all if you have ideas of your own. I do have a plot forming in my head, of course, but if we learn to compromise I think it'll be beautiful~

FAQ

What role will the players take on in this roleplay?
Primarily, players will take on the mantle of Knight Commanders — elite warriors who serve as generals in wartime, mentors in peace, and trusted advisors to the steward (or crown, under normal circumstances). By the time someone attains the rank of Knight Commander, they’ve proven not only their martial prowess but also their ability to bear a “Lesser Rune.”

Can I play something else?
While the main focus is on Knight Commanders, you could discuss with me if you’d like to play a different role (e.g., a noble, a court wizard, etc.). However, the default assumption is that your character will be a Knight Commander sent to locate the rumored heir.

The tags include “romance” and “18+.” Why is that?
Romance: Romance is optional, not a requirement. It’s simply an avenue you can explore if you and the other players are comfortable with it.

18+
This age rating is primarily about allowing creative freedom and comfort. It doesn’t mean the game is explicitly adult-themed; rather, it frees everyone from constantly worrying whether a scene or topic might be inappropriate for minors. This includes the possibility of darker themes, more graphic violence, and the occasional mature situation.

Is this a world with multiple fantasy races, or is it mostly humans with magic?
The setting is predominantly human, though there is an openness to introducing other races if a player has a strong concept in mind. If you’re interested in playing a non-human character, please discuss it with me first to ensure it fits the overall world.

What is the ultimate goal of the players?
In-character, the kingdom’s directive is to find and restore the missing heir to the throne. However, “not everything is as it seems.” The lord steward’s motives may not be as straightforward, and each player will have their own personal goals—whether that’s loyalty to the true bloodline, political ambition, forging alliances, or even romance. Ultimately, the main plot revolves around the question of who sits on the throne and the power that comes with the Royal Rune.

What art style or theme are you going for with the world?
Generally, a western fantasy aesthetic (think classic D&D or slightly realistic medieval style) fits best.

Face Claims
The preference is to avoid anime-style images, but otherwise you’re free to choose any style (realistic, painted fantasy art, etc.) that aligns with the setting’s tone.

What age range of characters is expected, especially if they’re Knight Commanders?
Knight Commanders are elite positions—like high-ranking officers — so it’s unlikely (though not impossible) for a very young character to hold the title. The position is meritocratic, emphasizing martial skill, leadership, and the rare ability to bear a Lesser Rune. Younger Knight Commanders can exist but are less common. They’d usually have a mentor, and they must have proven themselves in some extraordinary way. (Of course, always note that in a story, the main characters - the ones you play - are often the exception!)

Are there magical beasts or monsters in this world?
Yes, magical beasts do exist. Animals or creatures can become infused with magic, leading to things like wolves with tougher hides or dragons that roam distant lands. Humans who can tap into magic are referred to as sorcerers and often attend magical academies to become official wizards. There are also legends of more nightmarish creatures linked to the goddess of the dark, though these remain unverified myths in most people’s eyes.

What is the technology level of the kingdom, given that magic exists?
Magic is integrated into daily life, but in a limited way. Wizards can enchant objects (e.g., self-lighting candles) for those who can afford them. This kingdom does not have widespread steampunk or gunpowder technology. Some distant lands might experiment with magitech (like steam-powered inventions, but fueled by magic), though it’s rare. Overall, it’s a classic medieval fantasy setting where magic supplements technology rather than replacing it entirely.

In what climate or geography does the story take place?
The kingdom resembles “classic fantasy England”—lush green fields, flowing rivers, serene lakes, and ruins from older civilizations. Think along the lines of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: rolling hills, scattered ancient structures, and a temperate climate suitable for farmland and trade.

Why are the nobles cooperating to find the lost heir instead of seizing power themselves?
Divine Legitimacy: The Royal Rune is believed to be bestowed by the god of light, and nobles fear divine punishment or backlash from the populace if they claim the throne without that blessing.
Public Perception: The people’s acceptance of a ruler is strongly tied to the presence of the Royal Rune, making it hard to seize power without risking rebellion.
Opportunity for Favor: Many nobles see it as a chance to earn goodwill, influence, and rewards from the rightful heir if they help locate and restore them to power.
Stewardship Tradition: Historically, a steward is chosen from among the closest relatives when the rightful ruler is missing or undiscovered. This keeps the nobility in line and helps maintain stability until the actual Royal Rune bearer can be found.

Appearance: Average height, sporting silver hair and eyes, though the hair color choice seems to be truly permanent. She does sport toned muscles, leading to the idea she was possibly into sports, working out, or into numerous other hobbies or careers before her memory was stolen.

Teratódis Remnant: From the elbow down, her left arm has somehow been corrupted or changed into a mysterious clockwork prosthetic. It whirls and clicks in such a way that it is difficult to understand how it actually functions. Seemingly fused above the wrist is her soul gear, like a bracelet. Etched into the back of her left [now clockwork] hand is the number seven.

Traits: Seven seems to have a keen intellect and analytical mind that spots the details of her surroundings, though she is also cautious in nature and although quick to actually run, she tends to travel a bit slower when left to her own devices. She is rather unapologetically herself which may rub some people the wrong way, but her paramount concern is survival for the moment. She is well toned and can run a far distance or fight for prolonged times, but also needs time to keep her body in such a shape.

Skills/Muscle Memory:
• Tampering with Ethar Tech comes to her like a well honed skilled built over a decade or more.
• Seven also has enhanced reflexes, making it hard to grasp or hit her, though definitely not in the realm of impossible.
• Lastly, Seven seems to have a natural affinity towards a particular fighting style that allows her to use both blade and handguns interchangably at any given time.

Soul Gear: Seven uses a gunblade, a strange piece of weaponry that has the ability to shift to a gun or sword at will.

I'm trying my best to reach out to people... ^^ Even if it's online. (I don't really go outside, lol) But um... as long as it's okay with @Double (I want to be polite), I'd like my character's mech to be like a sentient version of Excalibur? Assuming that's okay. Hoping it's not stepping too out of bounds for her "demon"/Mech to be a blade wielded by a human. She'll definitely be 100% human herself.

Edit: I am super familiar with the Persona games though, if that's what you are referring to!

Um, hello.. ^^ Don't mind me and my social anxiety ... while I'd normally PM the host, I wanted to make sure my interest was well known! Especially after...

One thing that's been appealing to me lately is classical chivalry. So in the context of this setting I find myself imagining a mashup of sorts between Arthurian Legend and the Knights of the Inner Sphere from Battletech. Sort of a Space-Paladin, I guess?

I won't lie and say I've seen any of the animes listed, but I'm a HUGE Arthurian fan and ADORE Excalibur as a weapon (or in some cases, named Caliburn). I also happen to love mechs from the first time playing Armored Core 1 way back in the day. =3
