It's because the CSS is cached in your browser. Try Ctrl-Shift-R.

Right. In this iteration, I just display the total PM count and force the user to notice a delta that indicates that they've a new message.

I'm working on a "read" vs "unread" system which will solve a lot of problems at once like a notification system and topic subscriptions and indications next to topics you've not yet read.

It's just a work in progress and one of the core challenges of scaling a forum.

Interesting. The hiders depend on Javascript to open/close and the only way I could see Firefox ignoring it is if Javascript is disabled (NoScript installed?)

Soon I will overhaul and scrutinize the BBCode system. So far I've hardly touched it, so it really sucks.

It's a mistake calling it BBCode. It gives people the impression that it works.

I should call it "some things that might work".

The BBCode is incredibly limited right now. I just cobbled together something that works well enough (as long as you don't nest it) so that I could focus on other things.

I'll deliberately try to improve it soon.
