Tonight was the night. Jinny checked her hidden bag one more time, making sure she had everything she could think of. All the rations she could get her hands on, one fairly sharp meat knife she'd stolen, the little bit of clothing she had, and a very worn picture of her mother and father, from... before. They looked happy, on the day of their wedding. Someone had found her mother a white dress, and her father was wearing his best clothes. They were holding hands, tight, and smiling broadly into the camera. A pang of pain welled up in her chest. She missed her father desperately, his voice and his warm hugs, and most of all his strength. He'd want her to be strong. He'd want her to live. That's what she kept telling herself.

She knew she could easily die, going out into the wastes the way she planned to. But she would rather die on her own then live, constantly hungry and hated and useless. No one liked the orphans. They were extra mouths to feed without anything to contribute, or at least that's what she'd overheard. That's why she was glad no one would care if she left. The people who loved her were gone, and she had to go on, by herself.

Jinny rose up from the corner of the bedroom that she shared with the other orphan girls. All of the others were at their small recreation area, some playing games, the older ones talking to boys. She'd slipped out, unnoticed. It helped that she was small for her age. She was ten, and a lot of people thought she was eight. It was sometimes really annoying, but the other times it was good. She set the bag on her slim shoulders, and made sure it was secure before she moved to the window.

She'd figured out how to pick the lock well over a month ago. It had been easier to pick the lock than to find the tools to do it with. The window slid down easily, and she hoisted herself up and over, one leg at a time. Once she was out, she pushed it back up to close it. Then she headed toward the East Gate, not even looking back.

Zero looked at her with a straight face and pushed his hat up," Your power is controlling paper ?" He said with an unsure look on his face," Well that's actually pretty cool, and rare, at least it's nothing like talking to rocks or being able to smell everything on the planet or can tear your arms off and regrow them." he told her. " I think I actually read somewhere that paper can be used as armor and work as well as steel." he said

Kijani Ryane

Kijani smiled a bit more. Unwittingly Zero had said just the sort of thing she needed to hear. "Yes, paper has plenty of unique properties, when it's used correctly. It's said the ancient Chinese used paper armor." She was getting to be very informed about Chinese culture through research. Someday she would go there and really learn, but for the time being she would stick with learning all that she could and teaching herself Mandarin through internet videos. "I can make it into a decent weapon."

Zero was confused by what she said, it actually sounded to smart for him to know and it made him feel a little stupid, he decided to ask her what her power was again feeling confused," Uhh what does that mean ? If you have some type of power that's not really impressive I won't make fun of it or anything I swear, as long as it's nothing completely weird." Zero said while scratching his head and looking away.

Kijani didn't know what 'completely weird' consisted of, which made her slightly nervous. What if her power was weird, after all? She breathed out slowly and silently, and figured she'd just have to live with it. It wouldn't be the first time that she'd been an outsider. "I can do things with paper." She said, offering a much more simple explanation. She almost felt bad for deliberately talking over Zero's head. Almost.

ZeroZero put a hand on his chin as if he was thinking about something or trying to figure something out," I can conjure fire balls, transform into a cat, make light constructs, and well a couple other small things that probably won't beat what you can do. What can you actually do ? " Zero asked curiously, he said the exact same thing she asked him but in a more calm and gentle tone.

Kijani Ryane

Kijani raised her eyebrows as Zero rattled off his powers. Wow. She could only do one thing that was classified as super, and the rest was just learning and practice. For the first time in a long time, she felt outclassed. Inferior. She didn't like it at all. And then he was asking what she could do, and what she could do sounded so dumb in the face of all his talents. She thought about lying about it, but realized that she'd probably be asked to demonstrate. She cleared her throat, and put her confidence back on. Even if she was inferior, she sure wasn't going to act like it.

"I have a limited object telekinesis with density-shifting and construct building abilities." It sounded very scientific, but it wasn't much when it was put on display. Possibly because she was always holding back, always limiting herself to small doses. She'd never really cut loose- it had never been safe.

ZeroZero's grin grew a little when she shook his hand, and felt a small wave of approval wash over him," Nice to meet you Kijani, I hope we have the same classes together so I can get to know you a little more." he said before putting his hat on his head and let go of her hand, he still had a smile on his face.

Kijani Ryane

Kijani's smile widened, just a bit. "Ah, yes. That would be nice." She honestly didn't know what to say. Most of the time she just let other people talk, which they were happy to do. Whether she was listening or not. "Ah, so... what can you do?" It could have been asked with a bit more grace, but information was information.

Zero" Sorry Miss, I just didn't know your name so I called you ma'am, please don't be angry with me." Zero said with his hands out like he was trying to stop her from attacking him, Zero took off his hat with his left hand and put his right hand out," Nice to meet you, my name is Zero." he said with a confident smile on his face,

Kijani raised her eyebrows. 'Miss' was bad, too, but not as bad as 'ma'am' was. At least he was trying to be nice. She could do that too, if she wanted to. Best to start learning now. As her grandmother always said: You'll never know when you'll meet someone useful.

She smiled politely and shook Zero's hand. Her handshake was firm but not painful. "Kijani. Nice to meet you."
Good afternoon, Tyler!
"That's fine by me." Kijani took a sip of her drink, rolling the liquid over her tongue and sighing softly. It was delicious, but you know what they said about people who drank alone. This was just sad, but at least it was honest. The sort of people she usually met over alcohol weren't exactly the type to come to small places like this. She picked up the burger and took a dainty bite. It was hot and well-cooked, and she uncapped the ketchup to dab a little bit underneath the bun. She had a choice to make. Go to the good hotel, where she'd be more comfortable, but her money would run out faster, or go to the other hotel, where it was likely to be less showy, but she'd last longer. A faint smirk crossed her lips when she realized she'd never had to think about budgeting before. That bit of mirth faded quickly when she realized how far that removed her from the rest of the world. She heaved a sigh, running her hand through her dreadlocks and staring blankly at the table. What was she going to do?
Kijani Ryane

Kijani turned her head slightly at the boy who'd fallen into step beside her. He'd called her 'ma'am' which made her wince, inside. When she was nervous, she put on an extra layer of false courage, to hide it. Unfortunately that sometimes added a rather cold affect to her, it made her seem a lot older than she was. It didn't help at all that she was tall, and dressed like a businesswoman. "Thanks for the information." After a thought, she added. "And don't call me ma'am- I doubt I'm much older than you."
Kijani Ryane

Kijani looked out of the tinted window from the backseat of her Rolls-Royce, looking over what was going to be her new home for the foreseeable future. Her driver had parked just far away enough not to get too much attention. Most of the students were already arrived, or so it seemed. They seemed like normal teens, if you overlooked the occassional glow, or odd skin color, or extra appendage. Briefly she wondered what that would be like, growing up with a difference that you couldn't hide. She'd gotten lucky, in a way. Her power was invisible until she chose to show it. She could have gone through life and no one would have been the wiser. That had been her plan, too, up until a month ago.

Thanks to her grandmother, who spent the better part of her life around various heroes and villains, she'd been convinced to come to this place. Unlike her parents, her grandmother had fully embraced Kijani's powers, and was going to make sure she learned to use them wisely, and make something of herself. She'd been certain her granddaughter would flourish and grow here, and Kijani had never been steered wrong by the woman before. Kijani loved her grandmother dearly, and wanted to be as cool-headed and intelligent, as powerful as she was. Hopefully this place would teach her that.

"Miss Ryane?" Her driver was speaking. "Would you like me to drive to the front?"

"No, thank you, Charlie. This is fine." Kijani grabbed her things, smoothed her fine, wine red suit, and tucked back her dreadlocks. "I'll be fine." That part was more of self-reassurance than anything else. "...well, here goes." She was going in strictly under her own power. No one knew who her grandmother was- she'd made certain of that- and her parents' money and influence meant nothing here. Her reputation was hers to build. It was high time to lay the ground work.

She exited the Rolls and shut the door behind her, squaring her shoulders and making sure to express confidence in every motion. Then she started walking toward the main building.
