Samuel leaned back slightly in his chair, one hand lifting in a dismissive motion through the space between them as if brushing the matter aside entirely. Work settled easier into his hands than sentiment ever had. People were simple when given roles, schedules, expectations. "Let's go over the agenda for the day." He folded his hands neatly together atop the desk and glanced toward her clipboard, expression settling back into its usual composed shape. Whatever thoughts had briefly crossed his mind disappeared beneath routine, filed away behind order and structure where they belonged.

Witches call upon the raw forces of nature, the shimmering aether, and the voids beyond—harnessing this primordial energy and bending it to their will. Their magic is inherently chaotic and complex, demanding a mastery to have control over it. Witchcraft is far more than a skill; it is a sacred, learned art bestowed exclusively upon those born with the "Gift." In this world, magic is not a toy; it is a tool to be wielded with respect and diligence. To treat it lightly is to invite disaster, for the forces of the aether take their due without prejudice.

The Law of Equilibrium

Magic demands a divine balance—a give and take. This debt is often settled through :

  • Material Components : . Rare herbs, stones, or relics.
  • Talismans : . Objects infused with pre-stored intent.
  • Vitality : . Drawing directly from the witch’s own stamina or life force.

The Three Pillars

The art of witchcraft was tested, perfected, and codified into three primary forms by the Original Circle:

  • Spells : . The manipulation of energy through incantation and intent.
    .
    • Spells can vary in size and requirements. A skilled and learned witch can perform a large range of spells often with what she carries on hand and through the memorization of incantations, while a novice which might need her grimoire to perform simple levitations. The larger the spell, and the heavier the magical toll, more is required, often necessitating a grimoire, various stones or components, a complicated incantation, and even the aid of other witches.
      .
  • Alchemy : . The science of transmutation and the brewing of potent elixirs.
    .
    • Potions, poisons, and elixirs require patience and ingredients that can range from the mundane to the truly bizarre. These can take anywhere from a couple minutes to weeks to brew depending on its potency and complexity. They are often performed over a cauldron with far more complicated steps and processes than any spell. It is not something built from intent, but brewed through exact measurements and a thorough understanding.
      .
  • Rituals : . Complex, timed ceremonies used to achieve feats beyond the power of a single witch.
    .

The Forbidden Fourth

  • Blood Magic : . Long ago, near magic's inception, the founding witches discovered a secret fourth pillar: Blood Magic. This dark discipline is notoriously volatile, fueled by the very essence of life. Fearing its corruptive nature, the Circle strictly forbade its practice. The penalty for such heresy was the "Severing," being stripped of one’s magic and banished. But in some extreme cases, the price was death.
    .
  • The High Priestess's Burden : . At the turn of the twentieth century, the laws were amended. To ensure the Coven could defend itself against dark threats, the High Priestess was granted the sole freedom to perform Blood Magic. However, this remains a heavy secret; the knowledge must never leave the inner sanctum of the Circle, and its execution requires a level of diligence that borders on the obsessive.

The Three Artifacts

Back within the mountain when the seals were originally cast, three stones were found at the witches’ feet when they awoke. They were oval, as large as an apple, and black as death. They did not reflect light but absorb it like a black hole and anyone who dared look at them for too long went mad until pried away. These stones resonated with a power that yearned for the mountain like magic made tangible. These artifacts were originally given to the three most powerful witches. But the disappearance of one witch, along with her artifact, and the death of another, the second stone has been kept beneath the High Priestess’s watchful gaze, under lock and key, kept safe for the day it may be needed.

Crystals, Gemstones & Magic

Because witchcraft originated from the mountain, from earth and stone, crystals and gemstones amplify a witch’s magic to greater levels. Through years of rigorous testing, trial, and error, the witches discovered the properties of the various stones and now rely on them heavily for most of their spell work.
