He made her move into the apartment above the market so no matter where she went she was always under the watchful gaze of himself or the vampires he was in league with. She hasn’t spoken to or seen her family more than in passing since she entered his employ. naive - While Sutton is intelligent and wise beyond her years, her knowledge begins and ends in what she can study between the pages of a book. When it comes to practical, real world knowledge she is quite inexperienced. They have established themselves as a permanent presence and a household name through their ownership of the quarry, along with a handful of other small businesses throughout the town. A family built on philanthropy, a majority of their wealth goes back into Pine Ridge through charity, donations, and investments with the goal of not a single person within the small town being left without a home or a full belly. They are one of the primary investors for the recent rebuild and opening of the old ghost town and mines, in the hopes that it will increase tourism and bring a surge of economic gain to the small town. Henry and Sharon (formerly Anderson) Lockwood had a deep love for their hometown. They were in High School when the mines collapsed and the wave of devastation that followed. Many of the people who survived left, but they didn’t, they couldn’t. They remained because they shared whispers in locker lined halls of the life they’d build after graduating, of their parents’ legacies that they intended to continue, and of the family they planned on raising in the very halls they stood in. They married shortly after graduation and together, they worked tirelessly to help forge modern Pine Ridge, determined to restore the town’s charm and warmth brick by brick. Their family came later, not until the last foundation was poured and the neon buzz of open signs lined the freshly paved new Main Street. Only then could they rest and build the life they wanted. First came Sawyer, a spitting image of his father with all of his charm and none of his temperament. And then a few years later was Sutton, a quiet and well mannered girl, with her mother’s beauty and her father’s golden blonde hair. While the siblings were each other’s best friend and inseparable since they were both in diapers, they grew into entirely different people. Once Sawyer was a teenager, their father had tried to instill in him the same duty and responsibilities that followed the name Lockwood. Legacy. But he wanted nothing to do with following in their parent’s footsteps or remaining stuck and miserable in Pine Ridge for the rest of his life. Throughout High School he grew rebellious, sardonic, and troublesome. He skipped more days than he attended and would have gone to juvy half a dozen times if there was one in a small town in the mountains. No one was really surprised when it happened. The night of his eighteenth birthday he packed a bag, snuck out the window, leaving his family and Pine Ridge behind along with a single note that said “Sutton.” With her brother gone, the legacy of the Lockwood family fell solely on Sutton’s shoulders, but unlike Sawyer, she settled into the role of expectation like she was born to it. Having already absorbed her parents’ ideals and charitable nature she didn’t have to prove herself or change who she was, she simply thrived. Her time was spent furthering her education and knowledge however possible, and when her nose wasn’t in a book she stood right alongside her parents helping them in every way she could. Not only did she wish to continue their work but as she grew older and neared the end of her High School career, her sights kept soaring higher until her ambitions landed on the seat of the Mayor. Sutton graduated top of her class, receiving the title of valedictorian, countless scholarships, and acceptance into every top college in the country. Furthering her education was never a question of “if” but “where.” After months of deliberation and campus visits, her thirst for knowledge carried her across the country to Yale. After six long years of rigorous study, she finally returned back home with a masters degree in political science and an associates degree in economics. It wasn’t long after her return that the position opened up… an internship working with the town’s new mayor. It was perfect and exactly what she needed to get her foot in the door. Sutton applied, excited and desperate for the position. She never found out why she was accepted, if it was because of her eagerness, or family’s name, or simply because she was easy to manipulate. She grew up poor on a stretch of land in Jackson, Ohio that could barely constitute a farm. Life and survival was hard earned. The days were spent working the land from dawn to dusk, and more often than not her parents had forgone their supers in lieu of filling her plate. It was less than a modest life, but what they lacked in food and money was supplemented with love and comfort. They managed, for a time, but no amount of hard work could stave off illness. Smallpox swept through their settlement like wildfire and took Sabine’s parents before her sixteenth birthday. With no talents, no prospects, and not a cent to her name, she had no choice but to leave behind her homestead to try and make a life for herself as best she could. Word had been spreading about a gold rush out west. More and more families had been filling wagons with whatever they could carry and setting out. She was not a prospector and she didn’t have a clue what gold looked like, but like everyone else, she knew she had to go. Sabine had managed to bargain her way from wagon to wagon and even onto a train before her travels brought her to Pine Ridge. It was a small town that didn’t live up to the papers, nor was it as far west as she had expected. But whispers over lantern light and dirty water spoke of a town in South Dakota with a mine bursting with so much gold ore that it sparkled in candlelight and was untouched by the larger masses. She had expected more, but her naivety said that maybe it was better that way, that less people meant more gold for the lot of them… right? Wrong. Mines were a man’s place. Prospecting was a man’s job… and she was a woman. What place did a woman have in a mining town? They served two roles and two roles only, a dutiful wife for their husbands to come home to or a prostitute to warm a lonely man’s bed… And Sabine had no husband. Being a whore wasn’t the worst, it wasn’t the best either, but it kept a roof over her head and food in her belly… And made her a surprising amount of money. She couldn’t put a finger on what it was, perhaps her young age or comely face, but her bed was never empty for long. Sabine had mastered the art of finishing a man quickly, and pretending to be interested when her mind could not be farther away. It worked. And she only had to make a little more before she could leave in search of a better life, a new life. The day it happened Sabine and the other women she worked with were bringing food to the mines for the workers when the earth trembled and rock shifted. Then it all went black. When she awoke she was in a bed alongside numerous others. No one knew exactly what happened. They mentioned a vein of gold as thick as rope and digging too deep, but then men that were in its bowels did not make it out. They didn’t know any better. Everyone resumed mining and whoring when they healed, but things had changed. For Sabine it evolved quickly. It started with a candle going out when she looked at it or a seed growing and blooming before her eyes. When she noticed it was not a coincidence, it consumed her thoughts. She rarely slept, rarely ate, and no longer accepted male callers. Sabine got lost beneath her new abilities—practicing, pushing, perfecting—until she was no longer making money at all and the madame kicked her out. What she did not notice until she was ushered out at the cusp of night was that a handful of women were also dismissed… All of them survivors from the mine cave in. No words were shared, just knowing glances, and the group vanished into the forest. Together these women explored the farthest reaches of their power and established witchcraft as it was known throughout Pine Ridge in modern day. They lived outside the world of men, establishing the Circle, and answering to no law that was not the Law of Equilibrium. There was a give and take to everything, no gift without a price. This was discovered, known, and respected. But what they did not know was payment would come due. It was three years after that fateful day when they felt the pull like a siphon drawing them toward the mountain. They followed, led deep into the mines while following a call so ancient they felt it singing in their bones. What they found could not be described, nightmare incarnate, dark and hungry and terrifying to behold. No words were shared, no hesitation in their conviction, just purpose. They sealed it away before it could break free, using their blood for the first time in a ritual, nearly draining themselves of their life forces to protect the innocent lives that could fall victim to its fury. When they woke the pull was silenced, the rock sealed, and at their feet three stones blacker than death vibrating with a power that felt hauntingly familiar. They never spoke of it. Only shared a vow. The three most powerful witches took the stones, keeping them safe and guarded. Every year on the anniversary they traveled to the seal and strengthened it with their blood, power, and the essences of the stones. . S T R E N G T H S selfless - Harlan might be quiet and grumpy most of the time, but he has a deep love for Pine Ridge and the people within it. He goes out of his way to help those in need because he is capable, whether that’s taking Mrs. Larson to church and grocery shopping every Sunday because she can’t drive, or if that’s helping old Stan Danvers with the ghost town reconstruction without pay. He doesn’t have to be asked, he just lends a hand without expecting much in return. Which carries over into how his brother, and him, head the pack, working hard to keep Pine Ridge’s citizens safe from the bloodsuckers that lurk beneath it. carpenter - While Harlan has grown to be an unofficial handyman throughout town, his true skill flourishes when it comes to woodwork. Idle hands is the devil’s workshop, or whatever the saying is, and remaining idle for too long means he’s left alone with his thoughts. W E A K N E S S E S samuel holt - Clint and Samuel are brothers by choice not by blood. What is it they say? Blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb? This could not be more true, for these men have been to hell and back together. He has killed for Samuel and would do so again without a second thought. And while Clint is selfishly attached to his life, finding immortality to be quite spectacular, his brother is the one person he would sacrifice it for. cravings - No amount of time as a vampire can truly curb a craving. His childhood wasn’t memorable by the time he was thirty and it is even less so now nearly two centuries later. What he does remember is the first time he felt the weight of a pistol in his hand and the strength it took to pull back the hammer. Being an outlaw came easy to him, the power, the thrill, and the cash wasn’t a bad outcome either. He never really had a destination in mind, just going whichever way the wind blew following wealth by means of fancy wagons and fancier trains. He would take his spoils, live off of it for a time, often blowing it quickly on booze, gambling, and lovely ladies all the way from Mississippi to Kansas. When he was low, that’s when he would find a nice farm or ranch, offering his services for a day in exchange for a bed or pile of hay to crash in and a meal to fill his belly. By the time he crossed paths with Samuel, Clint had already earned a reputation as a drifter and an outlaw—not out of a desire for cruelty, but out of an inability to stay in one place for too long or conform to the laws trying to be set upon this ‘free’ land. He moved through the world with an easy smile and an undeniable charm, hiding a broken moral compass that bounced between freedom, greed, and pressing the barrel of his gun between the eyes of any piece of shit that had the misfortune of crossing his path. The night he killed Samuel’s master was not a calculated move, actually Clint was attempting to be on his best behavior. He had spent the day out beneath the oppressive sun, working the fields alongside Samuel and countless other slaves. He saw the way they were starved for food and water, whipped and beaten to work faster than their tired hands could handle, and then kicked while they were down as if dominance needed to be reinforced. Every time he tried to help, lending a shoulder, an extra hand, or sharing a sip of his own water, a crack of the whip stilled every farmhand. "Don’t let ‘em touch that," they’d say with a spit of chewing tobacco that landed on a slave’s back. "Filthy fuckin’ animals." By the time the sun had fallen below the horizon and dinner was set, Clint’s rage had plenty of time to smolder like embers shifting closer to gun powder. Super smelled heavenly and he made sure to eat his fill, if only for the sake of the women who slaved over it and catered to their master’s endless complaints. He hadn’t quite decided what he was going to do until the master forced his hand. Samuel was dragged in by the collar around his neck and forced to the knees. "Is this the slave you tried to help?" he asked, taking the bloody club from the man who dragged him in and smacked Samuel against his already beaten and swollen face. That’s all it took. The gun was raised before the help or his master could reach theirs. Two shots. Two quick fans of the hammer. Anyone else who tried to race into the dead man’s defense was given a courtesy he was not, leave or meet the same fate. Clint freed every slave on that plantation and killed anyone who stood in his way. He didn’t take any valuables, leaving them to the newly freed slaves to do with as they pleased, ideally starting new lives. But Samuel had nothing tethering him to the people he worked alongside. He asked if he could join Clint and the man agreed easily, not realizing then that the one thing his life was missing was a companion to ride through life beside. Throughout their years robbing trains and haunting the frontier, Clint took Samuel beneath his wing. He taught him how to ride, how to shoot, and how to spurn a world that wanted them dead or in chains. For Clint, freedom was more than laughing in the face of the law, and for Samuel it wasn’t just the absence of a master; it was the presence of a brother who understood that some bonds were forged in blood and fire rather than the laws of society. Their travels eventually took them to the Black Hills and a mine whispered to be bursting at the seams with gold. They had no intentions of becoming prospectors, rather stealing and gambling the gold right out from the other men’s noses. It was an easy plan, one they executed in countless other towns, but the mountain had other plans. The transformation should have broken him, but Clint took to immortality like a fish to water. They could have left, but there was something about Pine Ridge that kept them strong and close. They made a home in that strange little town, drifting in and out whenever time and age did not wear on them as it should. But they always crept back in a few decades later, a distant cousin, brother, or son, and no one asked questions. He backed Samuel’s reach for the office of Mayor, but did not care for titles or the petty power play within the coven. Back within the mountain when the seals were originally cast, three stones were found at the witches’ feet when they awoke. They were oval, as large as an apple, and black as death. They did not reflect light but absorb it like a black hole and anyone who dared look at them for too long went mad until pried away. These stones resonated with a power that yearned for the mountain like magic made tangible. These artifacts were originally given to the three most powerful witches. But the disappearance of one witch, along with her artifact, and the death of another, the second stone has been kept beneath the High Priestess’s watchful gaze, under lock and key, kept safe for the day it may be needed.

Her time was spent furthering her education and knowledge however possible, and when her nose wasn’t in a book she stood right alongside her parents helping them in every way she could. Not only did she wish to continue their work but as she grew older and neared the end of her High School career, her sights kept soaring higher until her ambitions landed on the seat of the Mayor. She grew up poor on a stretch of land in Jackson, Ohio that could barely constitute a farm. Life and survival was hard earned. The days were spent working the land from dawn to dusk, and more often than not her parents had forgone their supers in lieu of filling her plate. It was less than a modest life, but what they lacked in food and money was supplemented with love and comfort. They managed, for a time, but no amount of hard work could stave off illness. Smallpox swept through their settlement like wildfire and took Sabine’s parents before her sixteenth birthday. With no talents, no prospects, and not a cent to her name, she had no choice but to leave behind her homestead to try and make a life for herself as best she could. Word had been spreading about a gold rush out west. More and more families had been filling wagons with whatever they could carry and setting out. She was not a prospector and she didn’t have a clue what gold looked like, but like everyone else, she knew she had to go. Sabine had managed to bargain her way from wagon to wagon and even onto a train before her travels brought her to Pine Ridge. It was a small town that didn’t live up to the papers, nor was it as far west as she had expected. But whispers over lantern light and dirty water spoke of a town in South Dakota with a mine bursting with so much gold ore that it sparkled in candlelight and was untouched by the larger masses. She had expected more, but her naivety said that maybe it was better that way, that less people meant more gold for the lot of them… right? Wrong. Mines were a man’s place. Prospecting was a man’s job… and she was a woman. What place did a woman have in a mining town? They served two roles and two roles only, a dutiful wife for their husbands to come home to or a prostitute to warm a lonely man’s bed… And Sabine had no husband. Being a whore wasn’t the worst, it wasn’t the best either, but it kept a roof over her head and food in her belly… And made her a surprising amount of money. She couldn’t put a finger on what it was, perhaps her young age or comely face, but her bed was never empty for long. Sabine had mastered the art of finishing a man quickly, and pretending to be interested when her mind could not be farther away. It worked. And she only had to make a little more before she could leave in search of a better life, a new life. The day it happened Sabine and the other women she worked with were bringing food to the mines for the workers when the earth trembled and rock shifted. Then it all went black. When she awoke she was in a bed alongside numerous others. No one knew exactly what happened. They mentioned a vein of gold as thick as rope and digging too deep, but then men that were in its bowels did not make it out. They didn’t know any better. Everyone resumed mining and whoring when they healed, but things had changed. For Sabine it evolved quickly. It started with a candle going out when she looked at it or a seed growing and blooming before her eyes. When she noticed it was not a coincidence, it consumed her thoughts. She rarely slept, rarely ate, and no longer accepted male callers. Sabine got lost beneath her new abilities—practicing, pushing, perfecting—until she was no longer making money at all and the madame kicked her out. What she did not notice until she was ushered out at the cusp of night was that a handful of women were also dismissed… All of them survivors from the mine cave in. No words were shared, just knowing glances, and the group vanished into the forest. Together these women explored the farthest reaches of their power and established witchcraft as it was known throughout Pine Ridge in modern day. His animals stock the meat counter and produce most of the dairy found in the local market. He is an integral part of the food supply chain for the town. Which, for better or worse, means he is—or at least his land is—a vital piece of the food market, making him modestly one of the wealthiest people in Pine Ridge. W E A K N E S S E S samuel holt - Clint and Samuel are brothers by choice not by blood. What is it they say? Blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb? This could not be more true, for these men have been to hell and back together. He has killed for Samuel and would do so again without a second thought. And while Clint is selfishly attached to his life, finding immortality to be quite spectacular, his brother is the one person he would sacrifice it for. cravings - No amount of time as a vampire can truly curb a craving. He monitors it well, keeping to scheduled feedings or resorting to Weston’s Red when he has no other options, but he was human… once. Clint was never the best at taming his impulses before he had a constant thirst for blood and old habits have a way of creeping up when he least expects it. old fashioned - He had the opportunity to grow and evolve with the modern world, but rather he clung hard to his cowboy ways. His childhood wasn’t memorable by the time he was thirty and it is even less so now nearly two centuries later. Being an outlaw came easy to him, the power, the thrill, and the cash wasn’t a bad outcome either. He never really had a destination in mind, just going whichever way the wind blew following wealth by means of fancy wagons and fancier trains. He would take his spoils, live off of it for a time, often blowing it quickly on booze, gambling, and lovely ladies all the way from Mississippi to Kansas. When he was low, that’s when he would find a nice farm or ranch, offering his services for a day in exchange for a bed or pile of hay to crash in and a meal to fill his belly. By the time he crossed paths with Samuel, Clint had already earned a reputation as a drifter and an outlaw—not out of a desire for cruelty, but out of an inability to stay in one place for too long or conform to the laws trying to be set upon this ‘free’ land. He moved through the world with an easy smile and an undeniable charm, hiding a broken moral compass that bounced between freedom, greed, and pressing the barrel of his gun between the eyes of any piece of shit that had the misfortune of crossing his path. The night he killed Samuel’s master was not a calculated move, actually Clint was attempting to be on his best behavior. He had spent the day out beneath the oppressive sun, working the fields alongside Samuel and countless other slaves. He saw the way they were starved for food and water, whipped and beaten to work faster than their tired hands could handle, and then kicked while they were down as if dominance needed to be reinforced. Every time he tried to help, lending a shoulder, an extra hand, or sharing a sip of his own water, a crack of the whip stilled every farmhand. "Don’t let ‘em touch that," they’d say with a spit of chewing tobacco that landed on a slave’s back. "Filthy fuckin’ animals." By the time the sun had fallen below the horizon and dinner was set, Clint’s rage had plenty of time to smolder like embers shifting closer to gun powder. Super smelled heavenly and he made sure to eat his fill, if only for the sake of the women who slaved over it and catered to their master’s endless complaints. He hadn’t quite decided what he was going to do until the master forced his hand. Samuel was dragged in by the collar around his neck and forced to the knees. "Is this the slave you tried to help?" he asked, taking the bloody club from the man who dragged him in and smacked Samuel against his already beaten and swollen face. That’s all it took. The gun was raised before the help or his master could reach theirs. Two shots. Two quick fans of the hammer. Anyone else who tried to race into the dead man’s defense was given a courtesy he was not, leave or meet the same fate. Clint freed every slave on that plantation and killed anyone who stood in his way. He didn’t take any valuables, leaving them to the newly freed slaves to do with as they pleased, ideally starting new lives. But Samuel had nothing tethering him to the people he worked alongside. He asked if he could join Clint and the man agreed easily, not realizing then that the one thing his life was missing was a companion to ride through life beside. Throughout their years robbing trains and haunting the frontier, Clint took Samuel beneath his wing. He taught him how to ride, how to shoot, and how to spurn a world that wanted them dead or in chains. For Clint, freedom was more than laughing in the face of the law, and for Samuel it wasn’t just the absence of a master; it was the presence of a brother who understood that some bonds were forged in blood and fire rather than the laws of society. Their travels eventually took them to the Black Hills and a mine whispered to be bursting at the seams with gold. They had no intentions of becoming prospectors, rather stealing and gambling the gold right out from the other men’s noses. It was an easy plan, one they executed in countless other towns, but the mountain had other plans. The transformation should have broken him, but Clint took to immortality like a fish to water. They could have left, but there was something about Pine Ridge that kept them strong and close. They made a home in that strange little town, drifting in and out whenever time and age did not wear on them as it should. But they always crept back in a few decades later, a distant cousin, brother, or son, and no one asked questions. He backed Samuel’s reach for the office of Mayor, but did not care for titles or the petty power play within the coven.
