if you have a "craving", write a story on your own, that way when you inevitably lose interest and quit you're only wasting your own time

@Caits
Looks like we have two nurse-types here

I'm just curious: what inspired her to apply for the expedition? Not that it's too important, it's just that most people view th outside world how we view space: lots of people like it, but very few would actually sign up to go out there
@Lexicon@Chromane@Atrophy@Azkott@Skepic

WE'RE OFF CHUMMERS

Couple things: I figure depending on your leisure, your character can either alreadybe on the Garrloch, or be running as badly late as my dude Samick.

Second thing: I have our first "encounter" of sorts already planned out, but let's get things rollin' a bit before we make that happen

I'm pumped for this guys

@Caits
There's still time for you to get a character in if you like, so no pressure at all. There's plenty of unnamed people on the ship, one of which might be your character. Hope to see you join up :)

Oh, and sorry about the wall: I wrote a background radio broadcast to set the stage.

night all

Hello there, all you lovely listeners! Welcome to the Daily Drag! I'm your host, Calvin, and joining me is Polly Panama, a UINC official and a big fan of the show, if I'm not mistaken. Say hi, Polly.

Just ecstatic to be here, Cal! Thank you for having me on the show. It's a really special day today, isn't it? So much excitement in the air.

Thaaat's right, Polly. Today is the day of another launch! And more exciting still, it's the maiden voyage of the United Isles Naval Coalition's newest ship: The United Isles Ship Garrloch. I'm told this beauty is one of the first in a new line of exploration vessels which are trying to figure out just what's out there past that Ring of Thunder.

Yes, the Garrloch is our brand new flagship. The first of it's class. For those of you who are confused, Rick Garrloch was the main backer for this particular ship, so it seems only right that she be named in his honor.

Good thinking, Polly! Yes, the Garrloch would not be possible without Rick Garrloch's support. For those of you at home, Rick Garrloch is the CEO of New Life Industries, bringing you every possible household item you could ever need. Toothbrushes, pots and pans, even paper towel holders. If your life isn't quite homey enough, try buying a New Life. Now, tell me, Polly, what makes the Garrloch special beyond the rest of the UINC fleet?

Well, Cal, the Garrloch is the first exploration ship we're putting out into the world that can handle a brand new type of aircraft technology we like to call "VTOL".

Wow, that's an acronym if ever I've heard one!

Yes it is, Cal: it stands for Vertical Takeoff and Landing. We're putting a brand new prototype aircraft on the Garrloch which has the ability to take off like a helicopter, and then transform mid-flight into an airplane. It gives the airplane a lot more speed and distance, but still lets it maintain the maneuverability of a copter.

It's all flying a bit over my head, Polly, but it sounds amazing. I'm just tickled that you're here to explain this all to us, but unfortunately my producers over there are giving me some nasty looks. I think that's all the time we have for now.

Oh, no worries, Cal. Thanks again for having me.

And thank you for coming, Polly! Right, folks, tune in to our sister station "The Minutes" for a step-by-step of the Garrloch's launch. And now, I'd like to draw your attention to a particularly interesting new dog one of our listens recently brought to my attention...

Edward was late. He was late, late--so late, in fact, that using the word late probably wasn't even a relevant term anymore. He'd been expected at the bottom of the DOC at ten in the morning. It was ten now, and the DOC's topside had only just come into view as his old beater puttered up the road to the parking lot. "Shit, shit, come on..." There was a traffic pileup for some god-forsaken reason, and he wasn't going to be getting to where he was going any time soon.

"Mom was right," he seethed, glancing to the side of the road in a desperation. He should definitely have left his hotel room a good two hours earlier, just to be safe. He'd been distracted, though: a wonderful book about a world where there were no mysteries around the globe, and the only things left to explore were skyward. It was hard to put down those science-fiction books about space. After taking three flights and passing through Canthican border security, of course a blasted book would be the thing that screwed him over.

And now he was rightly pickled. There was only one chance he had at making it. "Not like I'll need it anyway," he told himself, before he pulled sharply to one side of the road through a flurry of honks and indignant drivers. He put the car in park, leapt out of the vehicle with his suitcase, and sprinted down the road. He had to carry his suitcase in both hands, but at least he was making progress.

He burst through the revolving door of the DOC's main lobby with a gasp, ignoring the loud cries of outrage from everyone around him. It didn't matter: he was late. "PLEASE," he huffed, dropping onto the receptionist's counter in exhaustion. "I'm...on the Garrloch. I mean...I should be. What's...the fastest...you can get me...down there?" His breathing came in labored puffs.

The receptionist barely even blinked at him. "Mr. Samick?" she asked. When he nodded, she jerked a stern finger in the direction of one of the doors. "In through there. You've been cleared for the Drop. Your luggage too. Be quick about it: Conway is not in a patient mood."

He blurted his thanks and lurched toward the door. Behind it was a long hallway. Ed groaned. Beyond that was two flights of stairs, and by the time he finally made it to the end, he was out of breath again.

"Samick?" asked a slightly smiling man. He looked like an attendant, or something. "Here, let me take that for you. This won't take long." Ed wanted to ask questions, but he somehow found himself sitting on a seat of some kind, with his luggage gone and straps covering his body. He opened his mouth to ask questions, but the attendant shook his head and interrupted.

"Arms in, head straight. Don't move, and try not to scream. Clock in once you hit the ground. Good luck."

Then the man stepped back, hit three buttons in a sequence, and before Ed could do more than process the words, the floor dropped out from under him, and he was hurtling downward at breakneck speeds. His arms were flopping everywhere, his head was tilted back, and he was screaming at the top of his lungs. The wind tore at his eyes, his hair swirled around with wild abandon, and he could practically feel the water rushing up to smash him. No one had told him about this part of the trip. He'd heard plenty about the soft and gentle lift, but not this at all.

He suddenly realized that he had stopped moving, even though his mouth was still open in a silent scream. "Wow, you really had no idea what to expect from that, did you?" came a voice to his left, and the straps were undone around him. He looked numbly over to see another similarly dressed attendant holding his suitcase out to him. "Just go out those double doors there, and head down the dock straight. You can't miss the Garrloch: it's the one with the fuming captain in front of it." Then he smiled and saluted.

Ed didn't say at all: he took his luggage and headed out the doors in a dumbstruck silence. So that was the Drop. He'd heard snippets about it during his research, but all he knew was that it was a faster way down to sea level.

Sea Level.

His eyes lit up and his head snapped up. Out beyond the dock stretched the horizon. Not the Ring of Thunder, which rumbled ever onward somewhat in the distance. But past that he saw the world. The ocean. Water and sky. "Holy hell," he whispered. It took him a long moment to tear his eyes away from the brand new sight, and begin his trudge down the dock. The attendant was right: it was impossible to miss Captain Vernon Conway storming back and forth in front of the Garrloch's gangplank.

"About bloody time," growled the captain as Ed trudged up. "I was wonderin' if you lot would even deem to show up. You're lucky you're not the last one here, or I'd have words for you, bucker. C'mon, now. Get in, and I'll talk to you later. Take a right once you reach the end of the hall and head up the stairs to the right to get on the upper deck. That's where y'rall gatherin' for now."

He resumed pacing, and Ed did as he was told. Although it was a pain to lug his stuff up all the stairs, Ed didn't want to risk the captain's ire. He lifted up and up and up, and then broke through to the light again.

Everyone was gathered at the fore of the ship. That was what it was called, right? He'd done some rudimentary studying of ship terms, but not nearly enough to be confident. "Uh...hi," he said to everyone gathered around. "I'm a Edward Samick, a reporter for the Winged Gazette in Edgenook. Um..."

Okay, so this was a bit awkward.
IC will be up before I go to sleep

You guys have no idea how long I've been waiting to use this song for something worthwhile
@Mercenary Lord Probably for the best. I really like this concept for a bunch of reasons, and I'd hate to ruin it by getting too nitpicky. Tectonic plates are many kilometers thick, because they form part of the crust. So probably just the top layer of soil and bedrock forms the Isles.

If the plates are quite thick, which would mean plenty of resources, you could just say the Outreach centers are based in a pit mine, or one of the lower floating islets that surround the main Isles. Humans can adapt quite happily to high altitudes over the course of generations. (Could be maybe 2-3 thousand feet thick, floating that high in the air?)

Could also be a cool plot point - some resources are running out on the islands, so part of the missions is to find a new source. Would also mean that UI tech would be even more heavily slanted in favor of renewable sources. Heck with the Ring of Thunder I can see wind and hydro being their main sources of electricity quite easily.

While I'm at it - what kind of land is underneath the Isles? Just tell me if the questions are annoying and I'll cut it out, but I do like the technical bits of world building.

I imagine that the thickness varies depending on where you go on the Isles. In some places it might be like 50 feet, while in others it could be a mile thick. I imagine Outreach Centers are built in locations where the thickness is minimal, and the distance from sea level is also minimal. A good, clean, empty space for construction
How thick are the islands themselves?

I suppose after a while the islanders would be pretty much acclimatized to the reduced oxygen at altitude.

2000 or a bit more does seem to be the limit for a tower though.

Oh shit that's a good question. My working explanation has been that the tectonic plates themselves broke free and floated up. How thick are tectonic plates? I'll work on it tomorrow, I need some sleep.

I will say that it might end up being one of those things where it's better to just not worry about the specifics in this case, so as to not drive myself crazy trying to come up with realistic numbers when we could just be rping

Edward Samick
26|5'10"|Male

[ S Y N O P S I S ]

Edward is an enthusiastic reporter hailing from an island within the Ventuian airspace. He currently lives in Edgenook on Ventui's main continent, under the employment of the Winged Gazette (a large news firm in the city). After several years of cajoling his boss, Ed was finally allowed to accompany an expedition beyond the Ring of Thunder, for what Edward promises will be the "story of the century".

[ A P P E A R A N C E ]

The Winged Gazette has a very stringent dress code: no piercings, visible tattoos, or dyed/long hair is accepted at his workplace: only clean, contained haircuts are allowed. There is no rule against facial hair, however, and Ed, having recently learned he can finally grow a full beard, has started to let his hair grow out. He likes the scruffy look, although more importantly he likes not having to shave as frequently.

He stands tall and with his shoulders back most of the time: his boarding-school upbringing was sure to keep slouching out of his life, but now he likes to relax as comfortably as possible when working. Slouching, recline, or flat out laying down are all positions he enjoys, but that militaristic-level of straight-backed standing has never truly gone.

[ P E R S O N A L I T Y ]

Edward is fairly extroverted, with a talent for asking questions and getting answers. He likes talking to others, but he also enjoys his alone time, to recharge his batteries and take deep breaths before the next round of socializing. As a reporter, the line between what is acceptable and what is necessary has become somewhat blurred to him, and Ed has no trouble asking uncomfortable questions if he thinks it will bring him closer to a story. Blunt and to the point is as easy as tactful and roundabout questioning for him.

On the flipside of that same coin, Ed also knows that there are times to be silent, and he is more than willing to keep his mouth shut and listen as well. While notetaking or thinking, he is far less amiable, answering questions or comments with short answers and little focus. He doesn't mean to be rude, but Ed knows that none of the great questions of life were solved by yammering about stupid topics.

[ H I S T O R Y ]

Edward Samick was born with an inquisitve pair of eyes. His mother and father called him "the little hawk", on account of his sharp eyes staring at anything and everything with hunger and obssession, like a tiny litle baby crazy person trying to drink up the world with his eyes. Not that it mattered to him: he was a baby and didn't care about trivial things like being crazy.

As he grew, the little hawk slowly refined his gaze: no longer did he stare with a crazed need. Instead, he gradually transformed the look into one of interest, intensity...query. For many years, he spoke not at all: his parents were worried he had some kind of mental illness, as his eyes bugged out at everything, but his lips remained sealed.

He was four when he started speaking: the doctors had dubbed him a "mute of unknown reasoning", but Ed had simply been biding his time. When he spoke, it was in full sentences. And once he started, Mr. and Mrs. Samick could not get the little hawk to shut up. His first word was "why". In an effort to teach Ed some self control and get some peace and quiet for themselves, his parents sent him away to a boarding school as soon as he was allowed to leave.

Teachers were delighted by Ed's questioning, when compared with the surly little monsters who were his peers. This resulted in a kind of feedback loop where, being rewarded for being talkative, Ed developed into an extrovert slowly and surely. He was generally well-liekd by his peers, although his penchant for asking questions got him in trouble on so numerous an amount of occasions, that he was once nearly expelled when a well-placed question at the wrong time started a riot in the school cafeteria.

Still, Ed was bright, quick to smile, and good at managing his time. His father gifted him with an old pocketwatch when he was 16: it was a family heirloom passed down at the 16th birthday for generations. With the help of that watch, his parents, and a keen mind, Ed graduated school with flying colors, and went on to pursue a degree in Journalism at the prestigious University of Gelbek, a regional university of great renown within Ventui.

College went about the same as his early schooling: he got on well enough with his professors and his peers, despite his absolute need to know all sorts of answers to all sorts of questions. Journalism came easily to Ed, and by the time of his graduation, he had worked several internships with the Winged Gazette in Edgenook, Ventui. He graduated to a well paying job in one of the most exciting cities in the known world, and for several years he worked with an enthusiam that led to quite a bit of success.

It was the discovery of the second obelisk outside the Ring of Thunder that got Ed on the hook. Suddenly there were hundreds of questions pouring into his mind about the outside world, and he really had no way to answer them where he was. So he bgan badgering his boss to let him join a trip down below. He bothered and bothered and bothered until finally his boss he could go and that he'd better get a fucking scoop or so help me god Edward I am going to jam a spoon down your throat--

His path was set. Ed got in touch with the UINC, explained the situation, got the proper clearances, and packed his bags. He said goodbye to his parents, smiled at his scowling boss, and headed out for the biggest story of the history of the world.

[ N O T E S / O T H E R I N F O ]

Edward carries a very old pocketwatch; it is a family heirloom, passed down to the eldest child of the family on their 16th birthday. Through a strange twist of fate, almost all of the generations have been single childs.

He also carries a notebook of waterproof paper and a pen. He has an excellent memory, and will often write down the important details of an event that night, long after they have occured.
@Skepic What could find we find indeed? Maybe our characters could place bets on the outcome of the voyage, seems like a good little character building excercise

@Mercenary Lord Can't wait to get started, this is going to be fun!
As a question, how high are the Isles? like a couple of hundred meters? A kilometer? Two?

When I did my research, it seemed like about 2000 feet high was a pretty good average height to put things at. Any higher and the lifts wouldn't work, and the air would get too thin to comfortable breathe.

EDIT: look guys i really am working on my guy
There's plenty of options available :D I've got a few ideas worked out, and I've gotten a few ideas from some of the players

Feel free to PM me if you have something cool, I'm happy to work things out with you all
