I've finally made it through a long stretch of work days! I plan plug away at this bio while I have some time. I'm considering trying to get into 1x1 RPs, but I'm not quite sure what the proper way is to reach out to potential partners.
This is a link to the guide page provided to me by Stormyx:
A little bit about me as pertains to collaborative writing.
I’m in my thirties and so identify as a dirty millennial, which I suppose is somewhat reflected by the fandoms I am familiar with. I know a decent bit about Star Wars lore, I played the Dragon Age games up through Inquisition, I played a handful of the older Pokémon games, and the only anime I have ever watched is Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. I read the Lord of the Rings books, the Hobbit, and the Silmarillion and I watched the LoTR movies and the first two Hobbit films. I read the Song of Ice and Fire books and watched the first season of AGoT. I read a number of the popular Young Adult series that were popular when I was growing up, such as the Inheritance Cycle, the Twilight Series, the Hunger Games and its sequels, and Divergence and its sequels. I watched all of the Harry Potter movies, and I read the last three books. And I think that is about it for my Fandom knowledge that I think anyone would care about. Somehow I’ve managed to survive three decades without seeing Avatar the Last Airbender until I started watching it with my partner just a few days ago as I write this in November 2025.
As far as my writing interests go, I find myself drawn toward Historical Fiction and Fantasy when it comes to genres, although I dabbled in Sci-fi, Steampunk, and Superhero settings when I wrote on another website. I can see myself writing in any combination of the above genres with a preference towards the former.
I'm proud of you for doing all that you can to cope with your condition, and I hope you continue to grow in strength and confidence. I very much understand the desire for friendship, I myself have pretty much zero online friends, as I failed to cherish the friendships I once had until they were gone.
I am very thankful to have local friendships that I can lean on, and I hope you are able to do so as well.
Unfortunately you and I don't really have the same interests. I have no confidence in my ability to try to write a rockstar or a bard, or anyone with musical talent, as I have come to accept that I am a musical idiot spawned from musical idiots. Rockstars come from a breed of person that loves, cherishes, and cannot understand a world without the language of music. I am the opposite of that. I don't get music. I like the sound of music (I have mixed feelings on the film of that name), but I could live in a world without music. I am also not particularly interested in modern settings, nor wrestling. All that said, I don't think we would work super well as writing partners, but I nonetheless wish you the absolute best in finding friends and writing partners here.
Since it looks like we have quite a few mages and hybrid warrior mages in our party, I’m planning on scrapping my prior two character concepts and changing them to someone who could be better suited to be the team scout/skill monkey. I’ve again thought up two character concepts. One character would be more of a traditional rogue, but one who would take up the Trickster Mythic Path, and so she might have enough charisma to be a halfway decent party face if needed as well, while the other character would be a sneaky vampire scientist who could lean more into the sci-fi elements of this setting. I managed to knock out most of the ideas I had for the Trickster Rogue today, and will work more on the vampire tomorrow.
Name: Candace Bel Age: 22 Appearance: I don't really have anything in mind. I’m thinking I might just recycle the appearance I wrote for Amelie but Candace would have different apparel tastes.
Background: Candace is one of those people who chronically finds authority to be an unbearable nuisance and whose love language is playing innocuous practical jokes on her friends. Her hate language involves considerably more destructive pranks. Her animosity toward authority was born in Catholic School, where she had a hate-hate relationship with the hapless nuns who tried in vain to whip Candace into the mold of a properly devout young girl. Candace did not appreciate her parents' embarrassment at her behavior and their unwillingness to take her side either, and so she developed a rather toxic relationship with them as well. While her rebellion at first remained mostly within the bounds of legality, as she grew older, even those boundaries were liberally bypassed as she found like-minded friends. In her teenage years, she found herself in and out of juvenile prison as her family wrote her off as an irredeemable black sheep, a situation she was mostly just fine with. Candace moved out of her parents' place and lived with a boyfriend, which was a very different kind of toxic relationship from the one she had with her family. As she struggled through high school, she had a side hustle of burglary and other kinds of robbery as she learned several of the tricks of the trade, from lockpicking, disguise, and even a bit of pick pocketing and other forms of sleight of hand. As her rap sheet grew, so did the unsustainability of her lifestyle, and eventually she got in so much trouble that she ended up getting sentenced to several years in non-juvenile prison. This scared her enough that for almost a year she forced herself to walk the straight and narrow, where she got her GED and worked some barely tolerable customer service jobs, but eventually her old habits crept back in, and Candace was teetering on the edge of fully returning to a life of crime when she found herself in Mer, where she now finds herself with an arsenal of new tricks she can pull in a dangerous new world.
Other Information You Want Us To Know: I see Candace largely fighting in typical Rogue style, ie, sticking knives in people's/demons backs, but she could also use some Trickster spells to help her get there or as a backup plan for when knife-to-back won't work. She might also have a sub-machine gun for laying down suppressing fire to help her out of a tough spot or again for situations where knife-to-back isn't a great plan. She can potentially be a functional party face if need be, especially once she hits level 7.
Archetype: Rogue
Candace is adept at identifying and disarming traps, maneuvering about undetected, dodging attacks, fighting in light armor, impressive feats of agility, shanking bad guys in the back, and spotting hidden threats and unusual behavior, and various feats of sleight of hand.
Quote from Wiki Page because I am not feeling super creative at the moment:
"For the Trickster, nothing is set in stone, because every stone can be smashed to pieces - if one is powerful enough. With every tweak and twist they make to the world, the Trickster shatters mundane understandings of reality, often simply for the fun of it”
Level 1: Distracting Spells and Tricks
Candace learns how to blast enemies in the face with rainbows or create slippery surfaces to disrupt pursuers, and she can even create flimsy mirror images of herself, because just one Candace wasn't enough of a hassle.
Level 2: Supernatural Stealth
Candace can be uncannily stealthy when she wants to be and is nearly undetectable and almost invisible to anyone who is not highly observant and actively looking for her. She learns some spells that can make her even harder to see or hear if needed.
Level 3: Shankasaurus Rex
Candace’s melee attacks against unsuspecting or helpless opponents hurt a lot. Like, a lot a lot. As in, if they don't die from getting shanked, they might wish they had.
Level 4: Escape Artist
Candace has discovered her inner Houdini, and can now escape most physical and even a lot of magical shackles. Almost nothing can hold this slippery girl down. She also learns some spells to further enhance her athleticism and to help her break out of binds.
Level 5: Prescient Perception
Few things can now escape Candace’s attention if she is sufficiently alert. If the party can keep the booze away from her, Candace can identify all but the very sneakiest of threats. She can also use spells to help improve her vision and other senses if she thinks something might be up, or if she just wants a better look at something from a safe distance.
Level 6: Cool Magic Tricks
Candace becomes very proficient at disabling traps, picking pockets, and other feats of sleight of hand. She gains the ability to disable a lot of magical effects as if they were traps. She also learns spells that allow her to share her stealthiness with a single partner. So romantic.
Level 7: Type A Personality
Candace gains the unfortunate (for everyone else) ability to become unnaturally good at convincing others of her point of view. This includes beings that would otherwise feel inclined to kill her, who may instead find that she is not the droid they were looking for. She also learns several mind-affecting spells to further manipulate enemies, including Charm Anything, which can help one baddie temporarily see the light and fight for the right side.
Level 8: Incredible Moves
Candace gets really good at dodging enemy attacks and counter attacking. Few can flit about a battlefield and land hits the way she can. Candace also learns spells that allow her to share her superior agility and charisma with the team if she so chooses.
Level 9: Master Illusionist
Candace learns how to create scary illusions that are also scary good at mauling bad guys. Her Illusion spells become harder to resist. In addition, she learns spells that allow her to share her stealthiness with the team briefly for those occasions when the whole party needs to sneak past Smaug the Scary Dragon.
Level 10: Rebel Against the Universe
Candace has a bone to pick with the Universe. Now that she has mastered the tricks of outlawry, stealth, shanking, and even some magic, the only trick left for her is to trick Fate itself. She has figured out how to prevent disaster from befalling her friends, and in a pinch, she can cast a spell that gives her or an ally perfect fortune for a short while.
Name: Meredith Seraphon Age: 35 Appearance: Meredith embraces the stereotypical gothic vampire vibes. Background: WIP Other Information You Want Us To Know: WIP Archetype/Mythic Path: Vivisectionist Vampire TBD
When I joined, someone directed me to a collection of guides people have written for this site. The list is rather overwhelming, but I don't think we need to read everything. Perhaps starting with the pages listed as being official could be a good place to start.
I am. I am currently waiting for more character submissions to inform my character choice. In the meantime, I am trying to wrap my head around what I can put for my per-level character powers. Emma's powers look like they were heavily inspired by the Pathfinder WotR game while Charles' powers appear more free-form. I'm not quite seeing all of the powers Randomguy chose for Emma in the linked Wiki, so I'm trying to find other sources to clue me in on what I can pick for powers for Amelie and Nicholas.
I’ve been pondering two different ideas for a potential character to write for this RP. I’ll post drafts for both characters here, and if the concepts work for this RP with or without further revision, then I will pick the character I think will work better with the team we come up with. For some reason I’m feeling inspired to write characters who explore religious themes (probably in part due to the fact that the premise involves fighting demons).
Character #1 Draft Sheet: Name: Amelie Dumaurie Age: 20 Appearance: Amelie is a straight haired brunette who stands at just under six feet and has a rather willowy build. Her exact apparel will depend on what's available, but she prefers to dress conservatively. Background: Amelie is a third generation French American from a staunchly Catholic family. She went to a Catholic private school growing up, and she found that her passion in life was to try to prove that her faith was the one true faith despite what anyone else would be inclined to believe. To that end, she was studying theology and history at the University of Notre Dame, with a plan of eventually getting into archeology with the hopes of participating in digs that would prove the events of the Bible to be historically accurate. However, she was taken to Mer before she had the chance to complete her undergraduate degree, so now she finds herself preparing to become a different kind of crusader from what she was originally planning. Other Information You Want Us To Know: I’ve found zealot characters to be painted in a rather poor light in a lot of the media I’ve consumed over the years. Without glossing over the drawbacks of such a close-minded worldview, I’d hope to present a more balanced portrayal of religious zealot through Amelie. I see her having a somewhat complicated view of authority, in that she would be quick to discount the authority and wisdom of those whom she disagrees with while on the other hand being too willing to turn a blind eye to the faults of those authorities whom she has chosen to give her loyalty to. This could potentially be exploited by an authority figure who knows how to appeal to her sensibilities without revealing their dishonorable intentions. However, in the service of a master with noble intentions, she could be a powerful force for good. Archetype/Mythic Path: Crusader Angel
Character #2 Draft Sheet: Name: Reverend Nicholas Bambrook Age: 56 Appearance: Average height, grey haired and a bit paunchy. He typically wears suits and ties in public, but he could switch into whatever passes for bourgeois formal attire in Mer. Background: Reverend Bambrook, during a long and not-particularly illustrious career, found himself the pastor of an aging Baptist church with an aging demographic, the kind where marriages and baby dedications are no longer happening but funerals are very much in the vogue. Despite the words of comfort that Nicholas was uttering during such services, he found himself questioning the truth of the supposed security in the afterlife that he had been announcing. While he continued to say what he had to in order to maintain his flock, he found himself doubting the tenants of his faith, and he began to fear death, especially once his parents passed. And then he found himself transported to Mer, which among other things shattered the vestiges of his belief in the sovereignty and truth of the Christian god, for his bible had never suggested anything that explained the universe he now found himself in. He has now forsaken his god and adopted the worship of a new deity, a god/goddess of death, for he now seeks the keys of eternal life, as he has no intention of dying in this blighted place. Other Information You Want Us To Know: I see him wielding an assault rifle as his choice of weapon but otherwise wouldn't wear much armor. Archetype/Mythic Path: Ecclesithuerge Lich
I’m seeing that someone else submitted an Angel character, so I imagine I will most likely use Nicolas unless someone else also wants to write a Necromancer, in which case I suppose two angels would be better than two necromancers, and I could adjust Amelie to be more of a spell caster.
I have two character concepts in mind. I have drafts in progress that I'll post once done. If both concepts are acceptable, I'll pick the character I think will fit better with the team we assemble.
I confess I have been feeling quite a bit of anxiety about initiating PMs with people. It kind of feels like knocking on a stranger's door and asking them to support my fundraiser. I'm not sure quite what to say, and I don't want to leave a bad first impression. I've been searching for guides to help my confidence, but I haven't seen anything regarding PM etiquette yet. I've been working on a draft of a more-detailed inquiry I've been thinking about posting in the Roleplaying Discussions subforum.
With that said, @themaybreeze, I am intrigued by your suggestion. I've never gotten terribly far into a 1x1, so I'm not certain about what a good process for brainstorming narratives that work well for two writers looks like. I don't exactly have any particular great OCs that I'm looking to use, nor impressive original settings that are fleshed out and ready for being written in. I suppose Fandoms can fill in for those things, although that is not my preference, especially with regards to characters (I struggle to get into the heads of sufficiently deep non-OC characters enough to feel comfortable portraying them accurately). It might help me overcome my fear of initiating PMs if I am the one to initiate the private conversation, but if you are still interested in a potential 1x1, let me know here I suppose as to what your expectations for what that initial message should look like.
I'm still interested in this RP, even if it just ends up being the two of us, although of course I'd look forward to writing with anyone else interested in this idea as well.
I think I'm hooked. If you decide to go further with this concept, I'll plan on joining up if I am in a good position to do so at that time.
I have a couple more questions. A lot of the Pathfinder character archetypes appear to get powers from deities. Would our characters of such an archetype find themselves dedicating themselves to a deity of Mer's pantheon? If so is Mer's pantheon basically the same as Pathfinder's pantheon?
