Scarlet Thorne

"Psh. Talk about a sore loser," Scarlet replied to Lucian's final words. She flicked his blood off her knuckles, and turned her attention towards the horde of demonic humanoids. They continued to pour from the portal, intensifying the situation. One of them charged the horned goth girl and attacked with surprising strength. Scarlet batted his arm away and countered with style; she leapt up and severed the creature's head with a fluid kick. It flitted across the theater and burst into a splash of crimson on the far wall. Handling one of the zombie-like beings was no trouble, but this situation was a lot more complex than that. Besides, she spotted one of the demons reviving after having been slain.

'What do I do? Hit them all with a massive attack? Should I try and bring this whole building down? Or should I put barriers around the portal? But that isn't a permanent solution...'

'Use the darkness in their hearts to your advantage,' came the reply of a new voice within her head.

Somehow Scarlet began to realize what he meant. 'Yeah... Yeah, that might work.'

She held out her pale hand and called out to the weapon that she knew would be waiting for her. In a puff of inky clouds it appeared - a black keyblade with jagged teeth and a red handle. A terrible chill came over her just from holding it. This was most certainly an evil tool. Somehow she already knew what its purpose was. It would twist unwilling beings into creatures of pure darkness; creatures that she could command.

She used the keyblade to pierce the next demon she fought. At once, it transformed into a tall, slender heartless with long trailing antennae. "Heel," she commanded it with a layered voice. It obediently stood up straight and waited. Then Scarlett struck down another demon, and another after that. Each time she defeated a demon with her superior strength, she would force it transform with the keyblade of heart. After a few minutes, she had gathered a small group of heartless minions. "Fight with me," she told them - and they did. They jumped into the fray silently, but eagerly - trading evenly with the red-eyed zombies.

Scarlet herself was feeling a strange type of fatigue however. This wasn't like physical exhaustion, or simply running out of mana. She clutched at her chest, not comprehending at first. Was wielding this power over darkness weighing on her own heart?

'So that's how it works. You're right - there really is a lot to it,' Scarlet thought. But before she could attempt the new technique, she was pulled out of the nightmare realm. She immediately rose to her feet, with her summoned snakes making way for her. "Subdue those people," she commanded, and the white snakes took off into the crowd. They would bite the possessed men and constrict them with their massive bodies, picking off some of the enemies.

Scarlet herself focused on Lucian. She sprang at the necromancer and joined Ghirahim in battle. If he escaped the demon's blade, he would have to deal with her devastating punches and kicks. The impact of her physical attacks would set the entire auditorium shaking. If Lucian managed to get away from both her and Ghirahim, she would blast after him with a quick thundara, not giving him a moment to rest.
So how's everyone doing? Any motivation to continue?

Scarlet crossed her arms in front of her as the telekinetic pulse rushed through her. There was an audible impact as it did, and much of her surroundings crumpled from the force. The floor and the walls broke apart around her, but the girl endured. Her defenses were impeccable. And while this wasn't her real body - it seemed to have the same properties; or perhaps it was simply Scarlet's confidence in her resistance that allowed it to function in this place. A bit of steam rose from her forearms in the wake of the blast.

'Crap, what do I do? I can't seem to hit him at all.'
'Tsk tsk tsk. Dealing with an intangible foe like this is going to be tricky. I know a move, but it's complicated. Buy some time and I will show you how to perform the technique.'

Just who was that voice? But Scarlet didn't have time to argue. In a flash she took up a different position, and then she released a large bout of dragonfire at Lucian. It was intensely destructive, in normal circumstances. But in this case it was just a holding move she made while listening to the voice. Still, the other side of the ship's interior exploded into light and plumes of smoke. Metals quickly melted into puddles under the influence of her breath.

The necromancer reappeared before Scarlet and made a sign with his hands. She tried to move, but she felt very sluggish suddenly. Then her eyes went vacant, and her body hit the floor. But she had made a move in the brief window she was awake. Her body moved involuntarily, and she bit into her lip, drawing a small amount of blood. After she fell unconscious, three large white snakes emerged from her sleeves, and they used their bulk to entirely cover her frame. These were no ordinary snakes - they were mystical beasts of superhuman strength. For the moment they just remained there, watching the surroundings and shrouding Scarlet from harm.

'You're strong, girl. But still quite green, aren't you? Not used to genjutsu? I helped you out this time. But before I pull you out - get up and see what you can learn from this place.' It was the strange voice from before.

Scarlet rose with a groan. She was in some kind of strange spaceship. The walls and the nearby machinery looked almost organic. But the lights above were dim and flickering. It was like something out of a horror movie. She felt her anxiety rising, but then she spotted an old man ahead. It was Lucian, she realized - but he was changed. She sprang into action, rushing the necromancer and attempting to deliver a powerful overhead slam. If that failed, she would swivel around and try a kick. And she wouldn't stop there. She would continue delivering strike after rapid strike. The purpose of her intensely focused attack was partly to keep her mind off of the horrific surroundings. But also, the necromancer had proven to be masterful with magic - it was time to see how he would deal with her terrific physical strength.

The horned goth girl had followed in behind Ghirahim, being suspicious of what the beast was up to. Evidently he was one of theirs however - and a fight was already breaking out on stage. The necromancer man had shown himself again, and now he was trying to plant his dagger in Ryder's back! Stopped once by the summoned beast, he quickly struck back against it with some kind of fiery conjuration.

Scarlet cracked a smile - now things were getting interesting! She lifted her hand and pointed its palm at the necromancer. "Freeze!" she shouted, and she fired an icy blue projectile at the cloaked man. The air immediately chilled, and the ground beneath the spell's path began to freeze over. Blizzaga was one of the most powerful cold magics she had inherited; it would home in on the target to a degree, and a direct hit could prove immensely damaging.

Watching the other prospective trainers who had gathered here today put a smile on Amy's face. Niko was bubbly and a bit eccentric, but he seemed friendly. Cal on the other hand was adorably shy and withdrawn. She couldn't help but think that the journey ahead of them was the surest thing to help him come out of his shell. This was just a beginning for them. There was really no telling where they would end up after this day.

The young girl nodded enthusiastically to the answers that Professor Ivy provided her, and she looked with awe at each new Pokemon that was introduced. When they got to the ranch, she decided that it was time to meet her new partner. "Come on out Charmander!" she said, unsealing the Pokeball, and unleashing a burst of light that would quickly materialize into an upright orange lizard. The creature looked around confusedly at first, but Amy greeted it warmly. "Hey little guy! I'll be looking after you from now on." She smiled and approached the creature, gently petting its head. "I'm Amy. It's nice to meet you."

Looking around the ranch, she continued. "So this is where you grew up, huh? Don't worry - we'll come back to visit later on." The Charmander was still a little unsure, but it seemed to respond well to Amy's careful coaxing. The young trainer scanned him with her pokedex. "Charmander, the Lizard Pokémon. Charmander's health can be gauged by the fire on the tip of its tail, which burns intensely when it's in good health," the device spat out, echoing the Professor's advice.

Once the tour was over, Amy bid farewell to the others, saying that she had some things to take care of before leaving town. She returned back to her family friend's house to thank them for all their support. But that wasn't the only reason. "Hey Matthew, want to meet my first pokemon?!" The boy enthusiastically responded and came running. The two of them marveled at Charmander together, giggling intermittently, before deciding to play a game together.

"Come on Charmander!" Amy called, leading him to the backyard. "We're gonna play a game. Let's try and keep this ball in the air as long as we can!" The girl let her pokemon watch at first. Then she gave him a few gentle passes to see how he did. Once he figured out that he was meant to hit the ball in the air, they all started playing together, bouncing the ball back and forth. For such a small creature, he seemed to have a fair amount of strength in his arms. He was able to knock the ball quite high into the air on one or two occasions.

The day was getting late, and they wrapped up their play. Amy ruffled Matthew's hair and told him "Keep up your studies and stay dedicated. Some day soon you can have a Pokemon of your own, too!" The boy's eyes sparkled at her encouragement. "Really?" he asked, and she nodded in return.

"Thank you so much for taking time with our son." Matthew's mother was genuinely appreciative for her attention. She had expected to simply look after another child for a day, but the Cooper's daughter had been surprisingly mature and supportive. "Why don't you stay for dinner tonight? And don't worry - I've got something for Charmander to eat, too." Amy agreed without thinking twice. Although she had put on a strong face today, the excitement and the play had slowly worn her down. It had already grown late, so she figured it would be better to start out fresh in the morning. There would be plenty of time tomorrow for adventuring.

'Very well,' Scarlet thought to herself. 'But it'd better be someone important. Just one murder? People die every day.' Although she was a bit skeptical about this being the first step in the beings' plan to save the world - that was immaterial to her. Gaining more power was the point.

The darkly clad teenager phased back into the convention center, without the food she'd been holding a moment ago. It seemed that another girl had noticed their disappearance; when they arrived back she started shouting at Stregobor about it and making a scene. Scarlett hit her with a disarming look of annoyance. "Pipe down, kid. It was just the old man's power." She quickly gathered that Stregobor was accepting of her, because her words had to be in reply to his address. "And we've got a problem to solve here."

She turned back towards the others and started formulating. "Let's check the convention schedule again. I have a feeling they might make their move during a presentation. That's when it'd be easiest to plan a hit, and when the results would be the most high-profile. Until the next showing, we can fan out and search for them among the crowd." Her red eyes were already scanning their faces and bodies, looking for anyone who seemed formidable. Ever since the changes happened, her perception was just on a different level compared to before. She felt sure that she would notice anyone worth their salt. Naturally she was looking upwards as well. The assassin could be hiding somewhere up there to establish reliable sight lines. "Do you have any tips for us, pops?" The flippant question was directed towards the wizard.

There had been a bit of trepidation in the young girl's heart that morning when she had said goodbye to her mom. She had lived a pampered sort of life before, and while she wasn't incapable of looking out for herself at this age, becoming an independent Pokemon trainer was undeniably a huge amount of extra responsibility to take on. Thankfully, Pallet Town had been accommodating so far. Her parents had an acquaintance in the area that had been kind enough to help her get started. Their family had treated her to a nice breakfast before she set off for the lab. And the couple had a child of their own, who also hoped to become a Pokemon trainer one day - Matthew. Although the boy was only a few years her junior, he seemed to really look up to her, since she was already starting the adventure that he had always dreamed of. His bright, sparkling eyes made it all feel real to her. Today was the day.

It was a bit of a disappointment that the legendary Professor Oak was not here today, but Amy tried not to let it show too much. She politely introduced herself to Ivy and the other beginners with a practiced curtsy. "It's nice to meet you all. My name is Amy Cooper. Thank you for taking care of me!" The last part was aimed at the professor rather than her contemporaries.

The anticipation was building steadily as the introductions continued and as they were eventually led deeper into the laboratory. Just what Pokemon was she going to get? Amy had her favorites, but she wasn't hoping for any one in particular. But after grabbing her TOF kit, she inspected the remaining choices. Her heart stirred when she saw that Charmander was on the list. She had learned in her studies that it was a very capable species; and its final evolution, Charizard, was known to be a powerful and loyal partner when trained well. Thinking of what the future might hold with it by her side made her heart thrill. And it was quite an adorable creature in its current state. There were several other good options, but none of them shook her from her interest in this one.

"Charmander, I choose you!" she announced, triumphantly claiming the ball for herself. She was quiet for a few minutes while the ceremony proceeded. She seemed to be sort of absentmindedly staring at the pokeball. Once everyone had finished up, she couldn't stop herself from peppering the professor with questions.

"Professor Ivy, Professor Ivy! I'd like to know, where did this Charmander come from? And does he need any special treatment? I want to make sure he's comfortable under my care."

Scarlett's heart skipped in her chest. Now that was interesting. These powers were the thing that, to her mind, had made her life worth living these last few weeks. Her facial expression visibly changed - when she heard the promise, her mouth popped open and her eyes turned happy. It seemed that some of that emanated bliss was finally getting to her. "Well, why didn't you say so before?" she asked, with a catty voice. "But the abilities I've already gained are so delectable, you had better have something good in store for me." With that, the goth let out a short, haughty laugh.

"But by all means, let me get started right away." Now she had a roadmap towards even her loftier goals, but it was still going to take some doing.
