She wanted to read, she wanted to write, but the main thing she wanted was something to fight

Make it clear that you don't need him to be reading Dante tomorrow. Also suggest it would be fun if you had a private language that you could use to mock English speakers in secret.

Early 30's. I know just enough about everything to be dangerous.

Junebug moved off at a brisk walk. While she wasn’t an infantryman, she had worked on enough jungles to have some idea of how to move. Rainwater runoff had carved what were now dry streams through the vegetation and she used one as a footpath to work her way inland towards the rendezvous point. The light amplification function on her helmet was the best choice for the conditions, gathering up starlight and applying a computer enhancement to the result that rendered the jungle in a black and white approximation of daylight. Without active sensor inputs the result didn’t give her great depth perception, but was far better than staggering around in the dark would have been.

Despite using the dry creekbed she was frequently obliged to climb over fallen trees or work her way through networks of vines. As the slope grew steeper she was also forced to climb several small rock faces, rarely more than ten feet or so but enough to slow her down and ensure that she was sweating by the time she closed in on the Rendevous. As she reached the top of the last rockface she spotted Neil crouching behind a three bhole some thirty meters ahead of her. Beyond him the motion detector carroted a bored looking soldier in green on black battle dress meandering along a game trail, a cigarette between his lips highlighted by her infrared sensors.

Where Saxon was she had no idea, though given she had seen him come down, he couldn’t be two far away. The night was suddenly split by a monstrous bellow that seemed to combine elements of a Terran elephant and some sort of vast serpent. The guard froze for a moment, his hand going to his rifle before he hurriedly checked something on his wrist before seeming to relax. Junebug frowned, uncertain as to what was going on, and uncertainty was something with which no veteran was comfortable. Crouching down behind a large rock she waited for the guard to past by or, if it was necessary, for Neil to take him out.

January smiled. How do you like your drink as opposed to do you drink. Prohibition at work. She tilted the bottle and poured two fingers of amber liquor into her glass before lifting it and swirling it to allow the vapors to express. It smelled cheap but she supposed that was to be expected.

"My name is January Endicott," she said after another exhalation of cigarette smoke. She tapped the ash from the tip of her cigarette again before continuing. The Endicott's were a powerful and politically connected Boston family who had moved to New York only within the last generation. They had made fortunes during the Spanish American War and expanded their holdings during the great war selling arms and armaments to the Allied Powers.

"I don't imagine we have moved in the same circles Mr Barker," she observed with a touch of aristocratic disdain, but she reached into her handbag and produced a roll of crisp banknotes clipped with a silver pin and a neatly folded news print, the New York Times several days old. The top story showed a photograph of an austere looking man with thinning hair and sharp features, his face framed by a pair of wire rimmed glasses. The headline read: Met Director Killed in Robbery and the first line identified the man as Henry Endicott, the Director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A second photo showed Endicott with his family, including a woman who was obviously January, although there was little resemblance beyond hair color.

"I wan't you to find out who killed my father Mr Barker, and why."
Emmaline leaned back on her pile of cushions and popped a cherry between her lips stripping the flesh of the fruit with practiced ease before spitting the seed out. She rather negligently waved her hand and, rather than falling to the floor, the pit began to orbit one of the hanging lanterns like a small moon. Cherry pits could be processed to create arsenic she recalled from what little instruction her master had bothered to impart to her.

“I hadn’t really thought about it,” she admitted. Like most wizards of her college, she believed, in her heart of hearts, that gold was a goal within itself.

“I suppose I could buy myself a mansion in Altdorf,” she mused, imagining a grand house among the nobles and rich merchants, something that would show all those who had looked down at her that she was a great lady now and worthy of envy. Perhaps she could build a proper laboratory and library to make herself a respectable wizard as well.

“Maybe I could hire mercenaries to dispossess a few Emirs,” she giggled, looking around at the opulence that surrounded her.

“Or travel to see strange and exotic places,” she mused, thinking of the distant and legendary kingdoms of Ind and Cathy in the far east, places that were only rumors and outlandish stories in the Empire.

“If there is enough gold I suppose I could do all three,” she grinned, spitting out a second seed and setting it to orbiting alongside the first before taking another mouthful of wine to wash the dark red juice from her mouth.

“What about you?”
