Yes, think about it this way. If you were on a flight from say, New York, JFK Airport (KJFK) and you were flying to Miami International, (KMIA). Those crafty folks at your airline's dispatch would have already provided your pilot with a list of suitable diversionary airports for every phase of flight tailored specifically for the plane's type, weight, cargo, fuel burn, weather and several other fun factors that go into the cost of your ticket (and the revenue level of the plane, haha!).

So putting our scenario over here in the States let's just say our origin flight (the one containing most of the characters accepted thus far) took off from New York and happily headed south along a pre-planned route through the air and somewhere over South Carolina the pilot noticed something not quite right or there was an unruly passenger- whatever the case, one of the diversionary airports would be used at that point. In this scenario, let's just say that was Savannah/Hilton Head Intl (KSAV).

In the States there would probably be another plane dispatched or the passengers would be moved to a plane in Jacksonville, FL to finish the trip to Miami. You'd be surprised how many different contingencies there really are for EVERY situation. It's not quite as messed up as you think, but I'm getting off topic.

For our story the diversion of the originating flight and the transfer of some of the passengers to a smaller plane to reach the "hub" destination of Lhasa (ZULS) is where the terror begins. Because I am a dork, I know that nothing flying out of Beijing Intl (ZBAA) is probably going to be smaller than an Airbus A330 or a Boeing 777 which would cruise at around 35k. The most plausible destination (and this just a guess on my part) for this plane would be New Dehli Intl (VIDP) so we would have some characters that would be planning to go any number of places from there. There might be some options given, but we're just going to say that our characters chose to take the ferry flight for one reason or another. Maybe they're in a hurry, or got lucky or whatever. We're not going to fit the passenger load of a wide-body jet into a DC-3, but story-wise it sets up our scenario nicely.

Since I'm back at home base now I can look at a couple route maps for Tibet Airlines and Air China and find us a real diversionary airport where our characters would have boarded the forlorn DC-3.

For fun you can plug those four letter airport codes into google and they will pop right up on the map, just try it ;-)
@Azaria Blue

Oi, sorry my travels took me away longer than I had anticipated. I had a couple thoughts on this and had mentioned earlier in the thread. I was going to suggest a smaller, ferry flight plane that would be plausible for the destination and setting as well as our character count. Based on what I have read thus far, I was going to say a DC-3 would be a good choice. You can Google a seat map pretty easily.

I think I read somewhere that our originating flight took off from Beijing. In order to have a route that would take us to the location of our story I would suggest that flight to have been diverted to somewhere like Xigaze or Nyingchi. Characters are then put on said smaller plane that crashes in route to Lhasa where the main hub of Tibetan travel takes place and where they would have boarded another jet had none of this ever happened.

I'm posting this from my phone, but since we're off and running a little quicker than I thought we'd be I wanted to get these thoughts out there. What I thought would be an interesting twist to develop would be that the plane was brought down on purpose and we had a passenger that knew more than he/she was letting on and that the other characters had time to figure out over time.

Still working on CS, should have him done by weekend.

My .02

Plugging away on my CS, going to be out of town for the long weekend but still checking the site with my phone. I'm very meticulous on character creation. Wont be taking the computer with me, just pen and notebook so I can stay at it then transfer it over when I get back.

Had a few musings on aircraft type (depends on how many people we get), plausible routes/destination, weather, etc. that I'll try to post over the weekend. Didn't know if any of this has already been settled, but lots of fun brainstorming
Working on a CS for this. Would like to play as the pilot (shocker, right?). I do some flying and one of the things that attracted me to this game in particular was getting a feel for how people would react in a crash/forced landing situation from the pilot's perspective.

Just curious if there are opinions on how we're going to bring down our plane? Whether it be a large commercial airliner or a prop-driven ferry flight. I would say from a pure, initial survivability standpoint we go with the latter. No one's going to be living through a break up at 35k nor would there be any chance of anyone's travel bags landing within 10 miles of the crash site.

Just a few thoughts there, looking forward to this.
