(a bit back in time)

On a beach away from everything else, two blonde girls were hugging one another while a spider-girl was watching them with satisfaction.

‘Right, it’s about time she goes home,’ Ronja said, nodding towards Suzette and the other girl. Suzette turned and nodded, looking then towards the girl.

‘Yeah, things will become unsafe around here soon. I’ll get you back home before then. It’s the responsible thing for me to do,’ Suzette said.

‘This has been… really weird,’ the girl Suzette had been hugging said… ‘… but thank you for showing me part of your world. It’s a great weight that has been lifted from my shoulder… mom. You never… you never actually did mean to leave dad and me. You had no choice. I am… so happy to know that,’ the girl said, raising a hand to dry some tears.

‘Of course I wouldn’t…’ Suzette said, raising a hand to dry her daughter’s tears. ‘No matter if I look older or younger than you, I’m still your mother. I come by to look at you both occasionally, okay. … But I won’t be contacting you because it could put you in danger. Do you understand?’

‘I… I understand. I understand you put me in danger just to speak to me. Thank you… so much for speaking to me anyway. I’m so happy you did,’ the daughter said.

‘Heh. Right, let’s get you home before your father starts missing you,’ Suzette said, walking forward to put an arm around her daughter to start leading her off. ‘Ronja, you’ll cover for me, won’t you?’

‘Of course I will,’ Ronja said with a nod. Suzette gave a thumbs up as she and her daughter wandered off to return the girl home…

‘Why don’t you tell dad, too? He’d be so happy.’

‘Nah, he wouldn’t be as understanding as you, I’m afraid.’

‘… Are you sure? Maybe he’d really like to interact with a younger version of his wife. It’d be like a blast from the past, or a…’

‘Aw, shush, you.’

‘Hah,’ Ronja shook her head at the silly mother and daughter pair that definitely looked more like sisters due to the mother having become significantly younger. With that, Suzette was escorting her daughter home and Ronja was left on her own. She turned to start wandering back to the Keijo stadium in order to witness the continuation of the games.… but then stopped, because.…

Someone was approaching her.

Not far away from the beach side was an island filled with cat girls in cat swimsuits. Most of them were covered in bruises and were either tending to their wounds or grooming each other for some comfort. None of them were paying attention to Ronja, but someone had left the island and was moving straight towards her position.

They were approaching from behind, maintaining distance behind her. If she stopped, they stopped, when she walked, they walked. If Ronja had eyes in the back of her head, she might have been able to see the tan skinned girl with a feathered headband trailing behind her, but she would not look familiar. She wasn’t even able to recognize the mind with her psychic magic. But she could tell that it was at least a dark magical girl that was following her.

Ronja momentarily stopped when she realized someone was following her. When they also stopped, she continued walking on her many spider-legs. They followed, and she stopped again, and so too did they stop. Ronja started to chuckle, for the experience of being followed was not one unbeknown to her. In fact, she knew it all too well. It reminded her of her past, and as such…

‘Welcome, welcome!’ Ronja called, spinning around in place and also spinning a couple balls of web in her hands. ‘Come to see the show of Ronja Koskela, have you? I am honored, truly!’ she said, chuckling as she lobbed her balls of web into the air and started to rather deftly juggle them. ‘Alas, I’m afraid that while I would have loved to show you a magic trick like my audience of old, my magic tricks were actually magic through my affinity for sorcery, and they would not be impressive to you. Alas,’ Ronja sighed as she caught all three webbed balls in one of her hands.

‘Mancini didn’t send you, did he? Or was it Romano? I rather assumed I’d be safe from the likes of them the moment I became a magical girl, hah. For their information, I scammed them fair and square!’ she called, and chuckled a bit privately.

The girl flinched when she was noticed, but otherwise remained impassive to Ronja’s questions. She just stared at the dryder with what most would call morbid curiosity. But curiosity implied that the stranger didn’t know what she was looking at.

The tan skinned girl stepped closer, no longer feeling the need to hide. Even if the girl didn’t speak, Ronja could clearly see that her mind was not showing any hostile intentions. She was calm and relaxed, and even the sight of a juggling dryder didn’t seem to throw her off any. She walked closer, her eyes locked on the web balls as they were tossed between Ronja’s deaft hands. She was just outside of her personal space and was still walking closer.

‘Oh? What have we here?’ Ronja asked, tilting her head a little at the approaching girl. It was a bit odd, her walking forward like that, but supposedly Ronja was entirely safe inside this dimension. Still, maybe she was about to be Overcity Shifted or something. Even then, no hostile intentions. ‘Is this a volunteer for my magic trick?’ she asked, still partially in performer-more. She stayed still and let the girl approach.

The nameless girl continued to approach, not saying anything as she did so. Once she got close enough, she hopped the rest of the rest of the distance between them and coiled her arms around the dryder’s torso. She rested her head on Ronja’s shoulder and gasped, only to let her breath go as a sigh. There were no attempts to use magic, no bone crunching squeeze that could kill a man, just a hug. Ronja couldn’t confirm, but she might have felt tears falling onto her naked shoulder.

Ronja was initially startled by the girl’s jump and embrace, not sure what to make of it, but then felt what could have been tears…

‘Oh, dearie, what’s the matter…?’ Ronja asked, confused by the girl’s actions and instinctively hugged the girl back after the feeling. Was this someone she knew? She couldn’t imagine there’d be anyone so happy to see her that she’d break out in tears…

The girl pulled back her head. She looked at Ronja square in the eyes, prepared to speak-

*Yoink*

”The hell is going on here?!” Oros, still wearing a not-so-very-temperature-appropriate yakuza jacket, grabbed the nameless girl and flung her off of Ronja. ”Listen here!” She pointed at the Indian. ”I gave you an island filled with bodacious cat girls to play with. There’s no reason to play with this, eh, thiiiiiiing!” With a dismissive wave, the the girl stood back up and walked towards the cat island. She glanced over her shoulder once, but immediately looked away when Oros noticed. ”Bzzzzz! Bzzzzz!” With that taken care of, she turned to face Ronja. ”Surely you have better things to do than flaunt your balls? Kids her age are very impressionable, and they don’t need some blind, blue, big-breasted bitch bopping balls between this babe’s bye-balls!”

Ronja turned her face to Oros as she appeared. This was all a modestly confusing turn of events for the spider-girl. Still, she looked after the quiet girl as long as she could, listening to Oros on the while. That last part made her react. ‘Oooh. That’s some decent alliteration. Did you come up with that on the spot? I’m impressed,’ Ronja said, clapping a little abscently.

”Yea, but it took my player like thirty seconds to think of the words. He’s getting slow in his old age!”

‘You wouldn’t happen to be so kind and able to explain what just happened to me, would you?’ she then asked, modestly curious.

”Nope! i can't say I would be!” She reached into her pockets and turned them inside out. ”Fresh out of kindness, patience too! I don’t have a single Damn to give, not a hoot, not even-” She shoved her hands deep into her pockets. ”Oh! Ahhh!” When Oros pulled her hands out of her pockets, she flipped off Ronja with both hands. ”Looks like I’ve got exactly two fucks to give, but after this, I’m spent!” She snarled before turning away from Ronja. ”Don’t you belong to an army of magical girls anyway? If you’re feeling lonely, go to them! Mariette has tentacles, you’re a spider, Esther is a tree, Mayra is a lizard...” She looked over her shoulder. ”Your entire trope is a hentai dojin waiting to happen! Go poach your own chick...” With a growl, Oros continued to saunter away.

Then the collab abruptly ended with one of the players leaving the roleplay so instead of investigating Ronja decided to cut her losses and head back to the stadium. The girl hugging her was Mika from this world and was crying because she realized she’d made Ronja blind (but she can still see with Psychic spec) in their encounter and felt sad about it, even though she’d done it because Ronja emptied Lupa’s mind, but that had turned out to be a non-issue apparently so okay, that done.

Mariette was a bit in a state of panic. This situation should never have happened. Yet, there was still a chance everything could work out for her. A lot of it relied on Penny. That was why Mariette had to contact her. She initially wanted to just portal in, but she'd gathered Penny was hurt and doing so could step on a couple toes. A call it was.

Mariette had removed herself from the stadium and was sitting on a rock on an empty beach as she dialled the number. She brought it to her ear and nervously waited.

The call would connect rather quickly. Though at first there would, not exactly silence but the soft static in the background of the call wouldn’t seem all that important.

“Mariette” Penny would say after a few moments. “This is unexpected. What’s the occasion?”

‘The mirror. Why are you playing for it? What's your… what are you going to do with it?’ Mariette asked, voice sharp but nervous.

Penny would raise an eyebrow at the question, even though she knew that no one would see it. “I’m more playing for the Beach than the mirror if I am to be completely honest. But keeping a Horror’s artifact away from the Horror is also an acceptable goal now that I am in this.” She would reply, her own tone cool and slightly bored. She recalled how Mariette discarded her phone last time they talked after all. “Either way, handing it to Beacon for disposal is the short term idea.”

Mariette took a moment to respond. Because this was by phone, Mariette was more or less convinced she was listening in. Nothing else to it.

‘… Could I convince you to give it to me should you win? I’m… willing to negotiate,’ Mariette said, voice strained.

“I don’t trust you” Penny would lie, her tone not shifting in the slightest “But seeing as I’m not going anywhere for the moment I am willing to hear you out. What possible benefits could there be to me giving you the Mirror?”

Mariette was a bit taken aback by that statement, particularly the fact it was a lie. It was a lie for the one that might be listening… wasn’t it? The portal girl had to take a moment to consider her next words.

‘... That… that’s cold, I came to your aid when the sanctuary was under attack. I did this despite that my own mansion had just been under attack and I needed to recover and regroup, and I asked for nothing in return. But, I suppose that’s what I get for being Asengav’s champion,’ she said and sighed.

‘I could give you an army. Asengav’s forces have monsters under their command and weaker Magical Girls. They can stand as sentries around the Sanctuary, and follow your every command. I can promise that, even should I for some reason I attack, they would defend the Sanctuary against me. I also offer artifacts of power, as I have the means to develop them. Perhaps you’d like one especially ordered? If you want a very specific effect, name it, and I shall ask if it is possible to develop,’ Mariette said. However, this was just to divert attention from what she was about to offer next.

There would be a momentary pause after Mariette gave her first pitch before what sounded like a disappointed sigh could be heard. “You realize that you’ve offered me all of that before right?” Penny would ask. “Back when I first took the reins of the Sanctuary. I didn’t accept your offer then, when I had little to offer, what makes you think that I would be willing to accept it now, when if I do win I get something that is a notable prize if the amount of people you’ve arrayed for it is anything to go by.”

“I’ll admit you did earn some points with helping out with the clean up, but treading the same ground now isn’t enough to cover the heat I would bring down on my head for handing it over to you. Not when the Ascendency Inquisitor had gotten her interest peaked by it.”

‘I see. That is unfortunate,’ Mariette said, and then considered her next set of words. There was something that she wanted to convey to Penny, but to mention it in a business deal was stupid. Yet, she had to say it.

‘… Then consider this. I want to work with you. I want to be allied with the people of Penrose. I want to play nice and not cause too much mayhem. However, should I not be able to recover that mirror, you may find that my replacement to be… far less agreeable.’ With all likelihood, Lea would take command, and Lea doesn’t care about Penrose or its inhabitants, even the slightest. … Anyway. It was time for the idea she’d been brewing to be mentioned.

‘Okay, then how about the following? Win the Black Mirror, and hand it back to me… and I will free the Magical Girls I once kidnapped,’ she offered. ‘If it is in exchange for recovering my master’s artifact, even he will agree it is an acceptable loss. I cannot return them all, because the attack on my manor killed over half of them, and one cannot be returned because a role has been given to her to play…’ Olivia, that is. ‘but the rest of them I can return safely, with their memories of the events cleared. You must understand, no regular deal would be adequate for just handing over such a valuable fighting force. This is a special offer. What do you say?’ Mariette asked.

This was… a little plan of Mariette’s. A way to, without Lea or her master questioning it, return the girls she had previously kidnapped. To make amends without making amends. If this deal went through, then Mariette would actually want Penny to win. She hoped the queen would pick up on that.

There would be another silence a more calculating one as Penny processed these new bits of information. “That” Would say slowly “Might be workable.” Rescuing the captured girls was definitely a high priority for Penny, especially since it seemed that Mariette wasn’t aware that Aurelio had managed to save some of the girls who had gone down in the assault. Not all of them, but some. Beacon could likely also pin down the one that wasn’t released to try and cut off Asengav’s next plan of action, assuming they had information on the one.

There was also keeping Mariette alive, or at least in charge. Though the Queen wasn’t sure why the girl was choosing to stay under the Horror’s shadow right now. Sabotage seemed like the name of the game so far, which could be useful, but Penny got the sense it was more than just simple sabotage, though how that was, she wasn’t fully sure of.

“Have a small request that could make it an easy deal for me.” She would go on, though the likelihood of her taking this deal was already high at the moment, even though it also meant she would have to go talk with Rachel again. “You helped pass along a few Coins to me a while back. But you did something to them, they are lesser compared to the genuine ones.” It was something she had discovered while inspecting the coins in question after the near riot at the Sanctuary. She hadn’t been able to fully comprehend what had been done to them, but she could still tell that something had been. “Care to share? Or return what was taken?” The last bit was a shot in the dark, though it made sense.

Mariette resisted a breath of elation at Penny's statement. If that worked, then…!

That part first. Oh, yeah. She did something to those. There was a slight bit of regret, doing that felt so pointless now.

‘I didn't "lessen" them, they still purify as intended. I just removed the part of them that forced the user to tie themselves to Beacon. I didn't like that the one option for someone who didn't want to be a monster anymore was to become a pawn of Beacon, so I removed that aspect of the coins. If they want to join Beacon, they can do that out of their own free will afterwards. That was all there was to it,’ Mariette explained. Then she sighed.

‘At the time, the coin was the only way to be purified. Since then, more options have appeared, making this gesture of defiance meaningless. Yeah, you can have them back. They are useless to me.’ So she said.

“Trust me, looking at them side by side the ones you altered do feel ‘lesser’.” Penny would say. Though she supposed that would make sense if Mariette removed whatever it was that linked the user to Beacon. Penny wasn’t even sure how that was possible, but those thoughts were for another time.

“Regardless, as soon as you can get those parts back to me the better” She would go on “Those should be able to buy me the freedom needed to get you the Mirror. Though I warn you, It’s not likely I’ll be able to simply hand it to you if I win. I’ll need some time, but no more than a day.”

Mariette gave no reply to the coins feeling lesser. It did seem she was getting away with that act of sabotage relatively harmlessly. So, for the next part…

‘So I will simply have to trust you not to lose my mirror in the meantime. Very well. I would like your word that you will not allow anyone to tamper with the mirror, somehow sabotaging it or adding anything that would be to my detriment or your advantage later on. If you can promise that, then I will promise to free the girls upon recovering the mirror without any tampering to them other than removing their memories of their time with me, and then we will have a deal,’ Mariette said, adding her own requirement.

“I wasn’t going to mess with it” Penny would mutter with a sigh. “But I’ll promise you that I won’t let anyone add to, or take anything from, the Mirror to the best of my abilities.” Both statements were honest.

“I suppose that’s everything” She would say, since it seemed that their bartering had gone rather smoothly. “But I do have one other Question. What if I get the Mirror without winning?”

Mariette’s eyebrows twitched. That… was a curious, and perhaps ominous, statement.

‘… The deal will be the same. Should you be in possession of the mirror at any point, then the deal is the same. The captured girls for the Black Mirror,’ she said simply.

“Good to hear, and I’m just checking my options really.” Penny would say with a chuckle. “Not expecting that I’m going to need to fall back onto a plan B, but I like to make sure that I’ve got them as an option anyway.” Would be the explanation.

‘I, uh. I see,’ Mariette replied, not entirely sure how to take that. Anyway… ‘So, we have a deal, then?’

“I’ll keep my word so long as you keep yours” Penny would agree.

‘Then, for a final bit, allow me to give you a word of warning. I’ve significantly powered up your next opponent,’ she told very frankly. ‘You must understand, I had to prepare for every possible circumstance. No matter who wins, I have to be on their side.’ No matter who won, Mariette needed to obtain that mirror.

‘What I’m saying is, underestimate her at your own peril. Good luck.’

“Hah… Sounds like I’m not the only one who is looking to stack the deck and get back up plans in order.” Penny would remark. “Any other bits of insight you're willing to give me in regards to Tenebra? or am I just going to have to find out in the ring?”

Hm. Perhaps she did. Tenebra hadn’t explicitly promised Mariette to give her the mirror, after all, and deep inside she wanted to give the captured girls back, so she wanted Penny to win. Very well. Sorry about this, Tenebra.

‘She’s a warper. She can create a path between two spaces in existence. It’s similar to my power, but it’s far more unstable and unpredictable, and it can be used on your current position with impunity. As for what more she’s capable of now when she’s powered up? It may turn out to be really dangerous. After all, she will only need to hit you once.’

“So I was going up against Time, and now I’m against Space. And here I thought I’d be able to catch a break in all of this.” Penny would remark a touch sarcastically. “I’m assuming she’s more of a caster, much like you as well?” She’d ask, more to be certain than anything else. Either way it would prove to be an annoying bout. Especially with her mimicry systems on the fritz.

‘I would claim so, albeit I haven't seen her physical output truly tested,’ Mariette replied. It was a bit amusing that she was up against a master of space directly after one of time, the portal girl agreed.

“Welp, that just means I have to find a way to hit her I suppose.” Penny would say, though her tone conveyed her annoyance. “Why is it that Magical skill is proving to be the ace in a physical sport?” She would complain to herself.

“That does cover everything, unless you’ve got another topic you’d like to bring up.”

‘I wish you good luck.’

Mariette then hung up.

It was a bit later. Matches were already ongoing, and Mariette was using a moment’s reprive to ensure that the mirror would not be stolen. Jelena was near the mirror, just sitting as an additional guard, watching it with her Third Eyes because then nobody should be able to use magic and be able to get away with the mirror, and of course there were more people watching the scene. In any case, Sally distracted Dan… which spared them the effort of distracting him themselves. Of course they had plans for how they could do that themselves, but this let them save their own plots.

‘Now,’ told the voice in Mariette’s ear, and Mariette nodded.

Hidden away she opened a portal directly to the portal inside the present, and Lea, with her outrageous agility, quickly slipped in.

They’d had an argument. Lea was of the opinion that they should steal the mirror and get the heck out of there immediately. Mariette wanted them to earn back the mirror by the rules of the game, and only steal it if they absolutely had to, because then they wouldn’t lose the trust of other members of Penrose and make more enemies.

As Mariette was in charge, they went with Mariette’s plan, but it did come with an important caveat. They had to ensure the mirror wouldn’t be stolen by anyone else. Hence why Lea now placed their non-magic tracker on the mirror frame, and then swiftly darted back, only Jelena with her Third Eye watching the present seeing the portal-magic that had appeared within the box for the briefest of moments.

The portal closed, their unnamed member confirmed that the tracker was indeed attached, and the mission was done. Now it was just to let Jelena constantly watch the scene with her Third Eye and they’d be alright.

Or so they had figured.

It vanished.

‘It’s gone,’ a voice reported in Mariette’s and Lea’s ears. Mariette raised her gaze and met Lea’s furious one, and there was no time to waste. All at once, multiple portals opened to every available magical girl in Mariette’s team.

‘Freya, Jelena, Tullia, with me,’ Lea immediately told, gathering the fastest among them, Freya grunting a bit while Jelena looked excited and Tullia confused. Lea immediately grabbed around them and Overcity Shifted. The most likely scenario was that somebody had taken the mirror and Overcity Shifted, which would place the party with the mirror in the Overcity, and then Lea would find and intercept them instantly by proximity, potentially. It was a possibility that was so strong they didn’t even wait for confirmation before going to go look. If it was incorrect, Mariette could retrieve them more or less instantly.

Jelena was with the Overcity crew basically exclusively to throw a look around herself with Third Eye. If she didn’t see anything immediately, she’d be back in this dimension within ten seconds.

‘Suzette, distract Dan. Taihei, give her an illusion,’ Mariette commanded, and Taihei shrugged before casting a specific gem over to Suzette with a raised eyebrow, but then smirked and acknowledged. Mariette deposited Suzette with a portal. She let Suzette head to work, and then turned to a new trio.

‘Mayra, Ronja, Josefin. Pursue, and if possible, obtain Sally,’ she commanded. Sally was, from all possible evidence, intrinsic to whatever had happened. The trio were ideal for hunting down someone lucky. Mayra, to hide them with darkness magic. Ronja, to restrain and obtain info from someone. Josefin, to just hopefully equalize the luck disparity between them. Mayra grinned and acknowledged, Ronja nodded and Josefin was a bit startled but otherwise ready to move. They departed, stalking Sally for now and looking for an opportunity. With this being Dan’s dimension, kidnapping her may be out of their reach, but she was very likely involved and they couldn’t let her get away.

A second or so later Jelena would be back, having done her immediate overview of the area in the Overcity. Then it was time for the next part.

So, there was Guardsman Dan, with his sunglasses and overall coolness, watching over the present… when something came around the corner. Someone that was sure to draw his attention. Totally.

‘Hey, big guy. Are you free?’ asked the resplendent image of a beautiful female dolphin, similarly humanized like Dan was, with definitive curves and assets, leaning at the corner and looking over at the dolphin guard.

This was actually Suzette in an illusion, and soon enough she’d slip away or laugh saying it was just a harmless prank if she was actually caught for what she was.

If there was even a single moment when Dan was distracted, Mariette broke open the portal into the box again, to check if the mirror was still within it or not. It was possible it was just the tracker that had somehow malfunctioned, after all. If so, this would be a little embarrassing. If it wasn’t, then Jelena would be there to look with her Third Eyes for whatever kind of magic trace might still be there for what had been done.

If the mirror was not there, and there wasn’t any immediate trace of where it had gone, then Mariette would lean back, focus her power, and then break the dimensional rift as she opened multiple portals into different dimensions. With their tracker expert right beside her, the hope was that the tracker would reappear if a straight path to the right dimension appeared. The obvious places to check was their own world of Penrose, the Overcity, and any other immediately adjacent dimensions. It didn’t matter if it was straining right now, they had to find that mirror.

Of course, with Freya suddenly recruited for this, it meant she couldn’t face Victoria, who was already waiting in the ring, in battle. Not to worry, Mariette had prepared for that, too… (battle added to fight-club-links for commentating)

Anise nodded to the statement, and then followed, because she didn’t have a lot else to do right now.

Basil healed his Pokémon and then retrieved Lancer. Then, with all three Pokémon sent out he got a couple of curious looks by random center-dwellers that just happened to be around because some people consider the Pokémon Center a place to socialize in.

Aaand then his bug-Pokémon almost fighting one another, and he was modestly close to getting a telling to keep all form of fighting outside the Pokémon Center, but he managed to calm them down in time. With that, instead, he could focus on the little plot he had in mind.

Roxanne sent out a wave of electricity to strike at the two bugs! A sphere of electric charges manifested around the two of them and showered them in electricity… Though, because Thunder-Wave is a single-target move and it was targeted at the both of them, neither got paralyzed! Just because there were no negative consequences doesn’t mean it was a pleasant experience, however.

Still, as the electric bolts danced around them, one went directly from Lancer to Sabbah. Further sparks flew as the bolt between them grew in intensity, seemingly drawing the power of the electric move and thickened intensely, and so the both of them were overtaken by a white light…!

What?

Lancer and Sabbah are evolving!

As the two bugs shone, suddenly a portion of the matter of one of the Pokémon was torn from it, part of Sabbah surging over to Lancer. The manifestation of the metal helmet had travelled along the lightning-bolt onto Lancer, attaching to his head, and from there it expanded. The whole Pokémon grew, and the helmet grew over his arms and down over his tiny legs, forming a shell over his lower form and two large lances over Lancer’s left and right arms, and over his head a great horsehair crest grew to add to the majesty…

For Sabbah, in the meantime, something had been taken instead of added, with the Shelmet being left with less than it had before. Yet, her evolution was not done. Pulled out of her shell, Sabbah grew significantly in size, forming a much larger head and body, and was wrapped in a a dark cloth-like membrane. No longer held back by metal shell that had once been her home, she now stood upright, her head adorned with a star and her body capable of far greater nimbleness…

‘Pinsir…’ Anise took a moment to consider, bringing a hand to her chin as she did. ‘Do I want a Pinsir? They are pretty tough. But, with the type-spread I will have, would I have use of one?’ She considered a bit, but eventually she nodded. ‘Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I’ll gain nothing by dismissing opportunities. I’ll accompany you,’ she eventually decided, so there’s that.

So, then there was that part about capturing. He switched from using the super-effective Fire Fang to using Vine Whip instead! It did significantly less damage to the next Shelmet he found, shortly thereafter for this one, too! The Vine Whip hit… and did almost too little damage! Shelmet replied by throwing Acid back at Crocus, who could shrug it off as his part-poison type protected him from the attack!

They weakened Shelmet a bit and then put it to sleep with Sleep Powder, which took two attempts for some reason, but then Basil threw a Pokéball at it! Shelmet was absorbed into the Pokéball!

The ball rolled once! The ball rolled twice! The ball ro-

Anise nodded at the heading towards Stillwood Village. ‘I maybe should do the same. I got one of these berries as well, after all,’ Anise commented, then looked towards him as he mentioned intel for a strong Pokémon. ‘Oh? I might be interested. You’re not going to tell me what rare Pokémon this is? Is it a surprise?’ Anise asked, contemplating how to use her time.

After that, Basil went on a shopping spree, and then went to catch a Shelmet for his Karrablast. He found one almost immediately! Basically just went over and checked the first bush and there it was!

Pokédex Entry #616 – Shelmet, the Snail Pokémon. Commonly found in bogs or similarly wet areas. It closes its shell to protect itself from attacks. It also produces and spits out a poisonous, sticky liquid. If bathed in electricity together with a Karrablast, both will evolve.

Cecil was significantly faster and immediately went up and used Fire Fang on the bug! Shelmet took the Super Effective hit and immediately took way too much damage, even for its heightened defense! Shelmet fainted!

… Though, that means the Shelmet cannot be caught!

A less effective move might be preferable if he wants to weaken the wild Pokémon for the purpose of catching.

‘If it's a matter of berries, then Stillwood Village is where I'd go. The Berry Garden is there, as well as the most knowledgeable people within berries. Though, if it's about knowing about the legends themselves, I instead recommend finding Professor Dunstan, the leading authority on legendary Pokémon. His home is in Worldedge City, but lately he's been more-or-less parked in his lab in Raremine Town. That's as much of a recommendation I can give,’ Lorette said in reply where he could find someone to tell him about the berry.

‘Great! I hope to hear from you again!’ Lorette said about Basil going to look out for the Pokémon that had just departed.

‘Thank you for taking my little quest, too! Good luck on your journeys, and don’t forget about me!’ the young Gym Leader said and waved after them as they departed from the Gym, back out into Highhill Town again. With that, it was Basil and Anise again. Basil immediately asked where she was heading…

‘Yeah, I’m heading back to Redcoast City first. Primarily to inform Hector of my findings and then receive his blessing to let me depart on my journey. I’ve been his disciple for so long, I can’t just up and depart without telling him. I should inform my family, too…’ Anise nodded, and then looked to Basil again.

‘And you?’ she simply asked.

‘Yeah, I have no idea what that berry is. But, given you've received a berry from the god of a harvest, we could make an educated guess,’ Lorette replied, rather amused as she did. She listened to the rest of what he had to say, and chuckled a little. She'd gotten herself seated on the floor at some point, because that felt more natural to her.

‘I think you're misunderstanding something. You didn't "release" Landorus. He was free to leave whenever he felt like it. All I did was allow a curious trainer to find the shrine that was once built for him,’ Lorette continued. She then looked towards Anise, giving the frowning red-head an apologetic smile. ‘I'm sorry I didn't clue you in earlier.’

‘I'm a little upset,’ Anise said, arms crossed. ‘I made a huge deal about finding out the truth of the legend, yet here you knew everything all along. I feel like I've worried for nothing.’

‘Ah, but I do still have a need for you,’ Lorette said, and sighed. ‘I asked you to bring what you found back to the Deepforest Shrine. That is, I hoped you'd ask Landorus to come with you back to me. Perhaps you would have if I'd have prepared you better, but that would have spoiled the fun surprise, wouldn't it? But, the truth is, I need him. The other two are getting restless,’ the young Gym Leader said, her face a bit blank.

‘That's on me, though. So, Anise. I'd like to officially task you with the finding and recovery of Landorus, who has flown away. I will send a message to the other Gym Leaders, and they'll give you aid when you need it. You'll need to raise your Pokémon Team to get strong on your own, but we'll be available for you when you need extra help. I ask this of you, as the current guardian of the Reveal Glass you're our most suitable candidate. Can I entrust this to you?’ Lorette asked.

‘Hmpf. That's what I was going to do, anyway. Leave it to me,’ Anise said.

‘Excellent,’ Lorette said, then turned to Basil. ‘I asked that of Anise because I already knew that she wanted to do it. You, though, have your own Pokémon journey ahead of you, don't you? But... if you do happen to see Landorus again, give us a call, won't you?’ Lorette asked, giving him a little happy smile.
@hatakekuro

‘Of course. No Pokémon Trainer would have gotten anywhere without their Pokémon. Well done, all of you,’ Lorette answered to the part about that Basil’s Pokémon were the one that won. A very true statement, albeit Basil wasn’t without deserving praise as well. With that, Lorette gave a happy smirk at that he wouldn’t stop.

‘Nice! That’s what I wanted to hear!’ she called, encouraging his seriousness. Then there was the part about healing…

‘Oh, don’t worry, leave that to me,’ Lorette said, and then pulled out numerous revives and potions, and she threw in some random Pokémon candies for them as just some treats for a good job…

Basil’s team was fully healed!

‘Now, then. You had questions?’ Lorette asked, smiling kindly.

They could potentially be talking while Lorette was treating the Pokémon.
Signaling the imminent Keijo battle about to commence, a large platform surrounded by smaller platforms that were all connected by narrow, person-wide pathways erupted from nothingness, presumably at Dan's command. Helewisa made her debut with arms wide open to the crowd and a bright smile while she waited on the stage where she and her opponent would soon begin to battle. Though despite her poised appearance, she was beginning to have second thoughts. It was not a consideration born out of fear of the attention she was getting, nor could she say the name "Ronja" frightened her.

No, she was just... a bit disappointed that it was Keijo.

Of course, you would naturally assume upon signing up for a Keijo tournament that you would be engaging in that selfsame activity. Wisa wasn't duped into it even if Stien made it clearer than the sky that it may be enjoyable to witness Wisa partake. That's not the problem. What is, is that Wisa managed to liken the competitive atmosphere to that of an old coliseum and so found the situation a bit lacking.

Ah, my heart yearns for the thrill of bloodsport! How I long for the sweet scent of sweat and unrestrained challenge, the grunts behind every thrust, and to bask in the afterglow in a battle well-fought! And yet, my desires shall find no purchase in this realm. Oh woe is me, for, in my apathy, I have pledged my allegiance to a patron most infertile!

Brief though it was, her eyes narrowed at the owner of the dimension.

Such a lame, insipid sport! Nevertheless! Witness me, Justine! By my victory or defeat, I shall not leave you wanting for entertainment!

And so, Helewisa's will is laid bare. All that remained was for the one who would put her own will against her to reveal themself.

Seated somewhere in the audience was a blonde woman that had borrowed a disguise artifact with a small, kind of excited girl who didn’t entirely know what was going on but the nice not-human lady was apparently competing and she was going to cheer for her.

Ronja, meanwhile, had decided to take an alternative path to entering the stage.

From the water on the other side of the platforms, the top half of a woman erupted with a splash and a gentle but heavy breath after having been swimming for a while. She had silver hair (ignore the image on that point), and a rather curvy form, something she shared with her opponent. She also notably had multiple eyes. She turned to look in the rough direction of the opponent waiting for her. She smiled.

‘Greetings! I am Ronja Koskela. I’m pleased to meet you,’ she said, smiling and sounding pretty pleased with this arrangement. ‘This keijo-thing is pretty amusing, isn’t it? Weird games humans decide to do for their entertainment. Or is it for the entertainment of the viewers? Hoho, either way, when I heard about it I just had to try it,’ she said, rather jovial in her tone.

‘Still, when it comes to hitting people with our butts…’ Ronja said, and put her hands on the platform before lifting a leg up to climb up. And then another leg. Then another leg. Then another leg. Then another leg. Finally, she lifted up her massive lower body, the spider girl revealing her shape as she climbed out the water, her many legs tapping forward. ‘… I’d claim I have a bit of an advantage, wouldn’t you say?’ Ronja said with deep amusement and slight wickedness, wiggling her body a bit to shake the giant spider abdomen that all qualified as her “rear”.

‘Are we ready to begin?’ Ronja eventually asked while entwining her fingers and pressing her arms on her chest.

“Ladies and gentlemen, what you are about to see is a thrash of the titans!” Dan’s voice emanated throughout the arena dome. “It’s Kejio Live, with yours truly and Pac-a-fist on the assist! In the south corner, we have Hilaria the Hearty, a veteran of war with a hunger for victory! And in the north corner, we have the eight-legged Lady of Lissom, Ronja!”
The camera broadcast panned across the contestants as usual.
“Who will win in this clash between colossi? And will the arena itself survive their meeting? Let’s find out!”

”We haven’t even had a proper round of trash talking though!”

“Oh, you’re right!” Dan froze as he was about to ring the bell. “Let’s see what they have to say to each other! I bet it’s going to be vicious!”

Ronja would come to find Helewisa's response to be strange, as it came in the form of an innocuous-sounding question. "Hey, hey~!" she called to Ronja, rather cheerfully. "Can you press your elbows to your belly button?"

The commentators said their thing while Ronja registered what Helewisa had said, and then looked down on herself. ‘Oh,’ she made a sound of realization. She smirked, then brought her elbows in towards her bellybutton… and her arms pushed her chest out on display as she did, putting significant emphasis on the bikini-clad rounded bodyparts. ‘Like this?’ Ronja asked with a chuckle.

Not a single person in the crowd seemed as ecstatic as Helewisa, who pumped her fist to the sky and gave a little hop after blatantly staring for nearly a minute. "Wonderful~!" she applauded the accomplishment. "A feat that inspires envy for those of us unable to do the very same!" Hilaria eagerly attempts to do the very same... only her attempts fail to have the same result as Ronja's, as she is quite literally impeded by her own chest. "Bigger isn't always better, you see! Of course, that is always going to depend on the circumstance, that’s why it just isn’t fair!"

Ronja blinked a little at Hilaria's comment. It was not what she'd expected. Still… she chuckled.

‘Actually, I'm sorry to say,’ she said, lifting her chest with one arm to demonstrate, ‘I can't reach, it's some distance out, I just did my best due to your earnest request. Alas, my massive shape gets in the way when I do the most common things in life. I tear things from shelves, I have to squeeze through corridors, I accidentally bump into small people in my way. It must be nice, being so much smaller…’ It was unclear if she was talking about her general body-size or just her chest that she was currently emphasizing.

“Um, it looks like the they’re having a...discussion,” Dan commented, looking a bit confused. “I suppose this counts as trash talk!”

"It's not fair..." Hilaria suddenly points a finger at Ronja as she makes this statement, then places one foot forward with a heavy stomp... shaking the very arena they stood on! "So unfair, this sport!" It is here where Wisa's aura changes drastically, the playful dragged away and replaced by sheer hostile intent, though more focused on Keijo than Ronja herself. Still, it was there and palpable so if she mistook its target it would be understandable. "Use of scutum is prohibited, yet you needn't even resemble a human to participate? Bah! Witch trials were far less lopsided!"

“Hey now, we don’t burn anyone here at the stake!” Dan commented. “But we do dip magical people into water...” He turned silent, as if he realized something. “Uhh, alright, it’s time to battle!” He rang the bell.

Helewisa recalled her defeat during her last attempt at Keijo. The star players in that match were Mika, and Dina. Both of whom used transformations in order to better their chances to win. What was Hilaria, who fought with skill and technique, supposed to do against a huge monster? Her axe can cut down such foes, but even her posterior, as shapely and sizable as it is, cannot! How was she supposed to best a sphinx and the Avatar with her ass?! It was absurd! Only with Mika's help did she even get as far as she had, and that merely reinforced her loathing of Keijo's state.

Well, if Keijo desperately wanted to favor monsters, then she would become one. And so she let out a terrifying roar, far too threatening and primal to be considered trash-talk!

"---___---!"

In an instant, a ripple of energy surged through Hilaria and drastically altered her body. The definition in her muscles became far more apparent, her eyes displayed a glow with a golden hue, her teeth became sharpened, and she grew horns and claws that appeared to be sharp enough to slice through metal like a hot knife through butter.

”Oh...” Pac-a-fist sat back in her seat. . ”This one’s a weirdo too. But she’s got that JRPG vibe going for her that I like. And Dryders are from DnD right? It’s a battle of table tops!”

“It sure is!” Dan answered. “Roll for initiative!”

Ronja only had a split second to identify the change before, with enough force to rock the platform, the beast blasted off straight for her, intending to strike! Even if Hilaria wasn't the fastest magical girl, even empowered, that didn't leave an eternity for the spider girl to decide her course of action, so she would have to choose quickly. Yet as Hilaria approached and let loose her attack, she did so in a way to suggest her displays were far more for the purpose of intimidation instead of lack of sanity, as she attacked not with tooth and claw, but with her rear side, fulfilling the conditions for Keijo combat.

Ronja's expression lost all semblance of amusement as Helewisa started her objection, first looking surprised and then settling for a blank expression. She understood the girl's objection. The spider-girl had hoped to inspire desperation, seeing fear would be fun, but she could understand this anger. Unfortunate, but understandable. She poured Reinforcement through her body in preparation.

With Hilaria having transformed, however, it meant her strength-advantage had been boosted additionally. Big as Ronja was, this was still a battle between the strong and the agile, with Ronja being the agile one.

Ronja quickly dashed along the passway to the next platform on all legs turning so she was facing Hilaria regardless. With her feet attached to the passway with web, she attempted to time a first swing of her whole body and spider’s abdomen, trying to time it with dodging the first attack and attacking after. As she did, she held a hand and shot a line of reinforcement web to the next platform intending to pull herself away from her enemy after her strike.

“Hilaria starts off with a charge!” Dan commented. “And Ronja dodges! Size is not everything when it comes to Keijo, folks! That momentum can turn even a smaller contestant into a dump truck!”

”But it doesn’t hurt to have a dump truck anyway!”

Hilaria's rear end came to an abrupt stop right where Ronja had been but a split second ago. A strong blast of air continued from where she stopped and Ronja could sense that blocking the charge probably would've flung her overboard had she tried after building up speed from that distance. On top of this, Ronja would feel a sharp force pulling her towards Hilaria when she got close, which slowed the startup of her spin, allowing Hilaria to reach the platform before her strike reached.

The blow caused her pause and might have even caused her to lose footing had she been hit on the narrow pathway instead of the platform. Furthermore, Ronja's retreat was momentarily impeded by that very same force pulling her towards Hilaria, but the spider managed to pull free from it eventually as her attack had prevented Hilaria from capitalizing on it, leaving the two in a neutral state, so to speak.

"C_W-R_!"

“And they collide!” Dan shouted. “I could feel the impact all the way to this commentator booth!”

”We really need to swap out these office chairs for ones that don’t roll around!” Pac-a-fist did her best to hold onto the console.

Hilaria wasted no time and began another charge, only this time she made a large leap over the pathway instead of running directly on it. The berserker soared high into the sky, so high in fact that she momentarily blotted out the sun from Ronja's point of view. The sun was now replaced with Hilaria's butt, which was aimed at Ronja! And with gravity on her side, Hilaria (and her butt) descended with incredible force!

Dan was quick to comment. “And there she goes with a meteor drop! Ronja’s cast in shadow where the sun don’t shine!”

”Brace for impact!!”

Yeah, Ronja had predicted trying to actually stop that would have been a mistake. Still, it was important information that Hilaria could stop basically instantly… and the wind pulse from this was about to pull her in from just the force of it. What a way to just indirectly apply force on someone. Impressive.

As Hilaria jumped, Ronja dashed out over the water. That is, she headed towards the middle platform while walking on platforms she was creating herself in order to escape the blow from above that also would surely spell the end if it hit. For all Hilaria’s complaints, it sure seemed like Ronja was the one on the defensive. As she realized Hilaria (may still be descending on her), Ronja leapt for the main platform to dodge, intending that Hilaria may just descend at her last position, over water, and crash through, though it was unlikely. Remembering that last pull she shot some web at the main platform to pull herself in, but could also always create a new platform under her feet if she found herself unable to and about to fall in the drink.

The sun trick didn’t help. Ronja doesn’t need eyes to see.

The moment that Ronja moved over the water, the airborne Hilaria abandoned the attempt to bum-bard her. The star fell true to the platform her spider foe had once been on and with a twist of her body, the ancient touched down on her feet with a loud crash. Her choice was only just fast enough, as the small platform struggled to stay regain buoyancy instead of succumbing to the partial submersion brought about by the comet.

“Look at those waves!” Dan commented. “Hilaria’s mere landing was enough to shake the platforms like an earthquake! Is Ronja doomed to keep escaping from the juggernaut that is Hilaria?"

Helewisa could only glare at Ronja with bared teeth as they were separated, for the time being, as her reckless attempts at big swings had proven to be ineffective up to this point. This fact was apparently something she acknowledged, for she chose instead to begin walking at a brisk pace down the pathways of the smaller platforms on her way to the central one, presumably to try something once she reached it, as her options at a range were rather limited.

‘Phew. So much for my large size to be an advantage. I wanted to tease some smaller girls and have a good time, but it doesn’t look like I’ll be able to accomplish that goal. Everyone’s so serious,’ Ronja sighed, speaking where her numerous legs braced themselves on the main platform, having left a web she could walk on over the water she just crossed. ‘Oh, well. I do kind of deserve it, don’t I?’ she asked with a smirk.

“P-OB_B-Y!” Came a guttural roar from Wisa.

Dan chipped in: “Hilaria seems to have invented a new language just for shouting profanities without being censored by the network! But don’t take my word for it!”

”I know I don’t!”

As Helewisa approached the main platform Ronja manifested a wall of Reinforcement at the end of the pathway, blocking the path. She then swiftly moved out over the water, manifesting her own floor to walk on in order to swing her giant spider’s abdomen-butt into Helewisa from the side to hopefully make her topple off the small walkway, but Ronja was once again not really counting on it hence the web attacked to the plattform she just left in order to pull herself back to safety with if she were to be counter-attacked.

”Looks like the dryder is done running.” Pac sipped her ice tea.

“Ronja’s going on the offensive with a flanking smash!” Dan squeaked.

Ronja's booty blast was, as she suspected, not enough to remove Hilaria from the match, but the narrow passage prevented Hilaria from sprawling and so the alternative was striking a wide pose in the best attempt she could manage at properly defending against it. She faced Ronja did her best to backpedal so as not to take the full brunt of the arachnobutt, narrowly avoiding a full-on direct hit. It wouldn't be proper to call it a graze but(t) the edge of Ronja's behind hit around half of Hilaria's and it was only through utilizing the extent of her meager gravity magic to make a pseudo-anchor out of the back half of her body did she convert what would surely still throw her off into a clutch save. She spun, managing to swap halves each time to influence her momentum backward rather than to the side into the water, off-balance, and for a second nearly tripped as she tried to regain her stance, wobbling her arms almost in a panic.

But in the end, she did it! Barely! Admittedly, she wasn't confident about surviving another attempt like that.

"E-SY" she proclaimed in an aggressive voice, though what right she even had to say that was anybody's guess.

“And Hilaria deflects the wrecking ball maneuver, managing to stay afloat!” Dan shouted. “No normal player could have stood their ground after such a blow!”

Pac-a-fist turned to Dan. ”Do normal people even play Keijo?”

Ronja, in the meantime, had pulled herself back to the main platform after the hit, just in case she’d have run into a deadly counter-attack… and found herself watching Helewisa’s wobbling and just precisely keeping steady. Ronja giggled, raised two hands and gently clapped for her opponent.

‘Well done. But, suppose it was easy, after all, you didn’t have as much weight that would have pulled you down as it would have me…’ she said, finding her mood again. Still, there was something she did wonder. ‘So, what use do you have of the Black Mirror? Or did you just enter for the sport or to protect the dimension? Still, tell you what…’ Ronja gave a slightly sad smirk as she looked to Hilaria.

‘I don’t stand much of a chance against Rachel. I was entered to fill out the ranks. But, maybe, just maybe, you would stand a chance? You surely have the raw power for it. If you were to win the mirror, we’d be very much interested in making a deal for it. How about it? We’d be willing to reward you handsomely for it!’ she suggested, the spider-lady smiling with a happy tone as she suggested it.

Hilaria appeared to be confused by the words the spider spoke, as if they were new and foreign to her. “Mirror? Rachel?” she shrugged, her features softening somewhat. “Can’t lose beach, don’t care about anything else,” It seemed to take considerable effort to speak somewhat normally for Hilaria as she made her words concise. “Or,” Wisa inhaled deeply, then exhaled. She did this a few times and her form seemed to waver between her default and enraged as she did. She punched her palm and smirked. “Whose size…and shape... maybe I’d like to see what prevails~”

Ronja took a brief glance at the thin walkway Helewisa was standing on and down on the water between them. She smirked, pushing out her chest.

‘You’d like to compare them? Fufufu. Your funeral.’

With that statement, Ronja leapt at Helewisa while she was still on the tight passage. The intention was for the spider-woman to strike her chest into her opponent (at her chest if able to) with the intention to knock Helewisa off the platform with her full weight from the side. Ronja could make such an aggressive leap because she could then use Reinforcement to jump on a barrier before hitting the water herself, and intended to leap on towards one of the smaller platforms behind Helewisa after she struck.

Wisa seemed more eager to meet with Ronja’s chest than the spider did, not bothering to wait for the spider to reach her -- she lept towards Ronja mid-air with the obvious intention of colliding chest to chest, though in her case the risk was a lot greater given her lack of web or reinforcement magic to back her up.

‘Oh.’ Ronja made a face of realization as Helewisa turned out to have enough of a footing to jump straight back at Ronja despite the fact that Ronja was attacking over water.

The two bodies slammed together, chest-to-chest, and with Helewisa being significantly stronger than Ronja the two were carried across the water, past the slim part of the main platform that Ronja had leapt from and towards the water, only for the both of them to slam into a barrier that Ronja manifested to not fall into the drink. Still with momentum backwards, the two slid off the water and onto one of the small platforms surrounding the main platform with pathways off it, Helewisa able to use Ronja’s own barriers to pursue.

They came to a stop on the small platform, only because Ronja manifested a new barrier behind her giant butt that she was promptly pushed up against, preventing her from being struck out the stage.

“The continents have collided, causing an earthquake!” Dan dramatically added. “They are locked in a bust-to-bust battle! Who will prevail!?”

Pac had nothing to add other than the sound of her sucking ice tea through a straw. Though her office chair had been strapped to the floor pretty tightly.

Ronja grunted as Helewisa’s and her great chests were squished against one another, but she had a solution in mind. A surge of Reinforcement magic flowed through her body, bolstering her. The web on a different part of the arena and the barrier behind her withered away, yet she wasn’t being pushed back anymore. Ronja smirked back at Helewisa, their chests squished together, with Ronja probably being a bit naturally taller because big spider, her many legs attached to the platform below.

‘Perhaps… I can do this after all,’ Ronja panted a bit, having put all her considerable magic into buffing her strength, almost matching Helewisa in strength and her extra weight doing the rest, as their two pairs of great assets were competing for domination against one another.

"You're pretty good... for a coward...!" Helewisa taunted, though she was obviously struggling quite a bit too judging by the sweat on her brow. Being the shorter of the two, she was subject to gravity's effects as well as the enhanced spider. Still, she would start to wrestle the lead from Ronja for a bit, only to lose it and be on the receiving end and this process would repeat as the two could find not the added bit of strength to press their advantage to a victory at the moment.

‘Haha, you’re… not bad yourself, little brute~’ Ronja taunted right back, but the truth was, she was struggling. To keep this advantage she was straining her magical output to the limit to increase her strength. However, she wasn’t boosting her endurance, which was a far cry from Helewisa’s. Her poor sizable breasts were not as sturdy as her opponent’s and they were starting to really ache as the two girls of currently massive strength were squashing their chests at this battle of domination!

If only she could overpower her opponent, get her off the platform…! But no, the two were hard-pressed to overpower one another. It was tempting to try to remove her strength enhancement to try something trickier… But her pride was on the line! Not to mention, she felt if she reduced her strength to do other magic, she’d be shot straight off the platform into the water! She had to endure…!

‘Ready to call it quits yet…?’ Ronja panted as the two were locked in their battle of chest-power…!

“As if…!” she retorted, just as stubborn as Ronja was in her pursuit of victory. She might have had more endurance than the spider girl, but that did not mean this was a breeze for her. She laughed defiantly. “I can… do this all day…!”

Suddenly, as the two were locked in their struggle for supremacy, the bell was rung.
Immediately after, Dan’s image appeared on a large screen cast over the arena.
“Time’s out!” He declared with a cross of his fins, signaling the end of the match.
“Oh man, what an exciting battle that was! I felt like a colibri on coffee from start to finish with how much my heart was beating!
Anyway, both competitors were amazing today, showing both great strength as well as skill. However, only one can be deemed the winner, who is...” He paused for dramatic effect.

“...Hilaria! While Ronja showed great strategic skill with the use of her barriers, Hilaria had both solid fundamentals and the determination to use them. Congratulations!”
He clapped his fins, and the audience joined in the clapping.

”Always disappointing to see a match end with a time over, especially when we’re so close to seeing a ring out.” Pac-a-fist wiped off her mouth. ”But the contestants did a great job, and both demonstrated excellent skill. Hopefully we’ll see more of Ronja next year!”

‘… Oh,’ Ronja blinked a bit at the announcement, pulling back from their battle and putting her hands over her aching chest as she looked a bit taken aback for a bit. Aside from the last jump which had ended up in a struggle for domination, Hilaria hadn’t actually hit her once, yet the spider-girl lost? Did they subtract points from dodging and giving up ground earlier? Did Dan somehow factor in the fact Ronja’s lower endurance was taking its toll on her in that last face-off? … She sighed with a smile, and decided that didn’t really matter.

‘Okay, with the unpleasantries over… I will admit you have a pretty tremendous pair,’ the spider-girl said with a smile, very intentionally using a word that meant both “big” and “good”.

Despite her victory, Hilaria did not appear to be too excited. An arrogant smirk had overtaken her features during the chest bout, but that faded into a neutral expression as the reality dawned on her. This, however, lasted only a moment. Ronja seemed to take the defeat with grace, and though she typically wouldn't care about such things, Hilaria thought it would be rude to make a scene.

"A pair that hasn't proved itself your better," Hilaria added with a small smile, hinting at a genuine appreciation of Ronja's assets. “I won’t waste our time with theatrics if opportunity provides us with a rematch one day,” she stated, offering her hand for a shake as this match of Keijo came to a close.

‘Fufu. If that were to happen, I would be pleased. I’ll look forward to it,’ Ronja replied, also smiling as she took Hilaria’s hand. With that, the battle was over, the combatants respected one another, and the scene came to a close.

‘Aw, she lost,’ Suzette sighed a bit, and then turned to the girl next to her. ‘So, now that you’ve seen a bit of what our world is capable of, albeit through a really ridiculous game… what do you think?’ she asked.

The girl next to her had bated breath and wide eyes. It took a moment for her to reply.

‘I think you guys are completely insane.’
VS

Backstage, an order had been given. Should two Champions of Asengav face one another in the tournament, the less likely to win should forfeit. This command had been given by Mariette with the intention that they should try to hide their abilities from potential opponents down the line. In Mariette’s mind, there had been a clear order of least to most likely to win, and there was no reason for any sort of complication.

Which meant that the following scene was happening.

‘Are you claiming yourself more likely to win than me?’ Taihei asked, looking incredulously at Victoria.

‘Is that a question?’ Victoria asked, then laughed out loud where they stood on a single, huge floating platform in the water in front of the audience. ‘Of course I am! You don’t stand a fly’s chance in hell of winning!’

‘Hmpf. You are overconfident. There are many strong opponents in this tournament, and you will not be strong enough to face them. I have the tools to make even the strongest foe fall…’ Taihei stated, frowning somewhat at Victoria.

‘Yeah, maybe,’ Victoria shrugged. ‘But it’s less that I think I’LL win and more that I KNOW you’d lose…!’ she retorted, pointing aggressively at Taihei.

At that moment, a cheesy show tune began to play on the speakers, followed by Dan's voice.
"Welcome to Keijo Live, with your hosts Dan The Dolphin and Pac-a-fist. And now, a match between two of Mariette's friends, Victoria and Taihei!" The camera made panning shots of the girls and the arena for the broadcast.
"While a newbie to the Keijo scene, Victoria is experienced in close quarters combat, giving her a cool head for the heat! However, Taihei possesses the kind of endurance and staying power to outmatch even heavyweights."

”All the same, Dan, it’s not uncommon for Taihei’s misfortune to turn on her.” Pac-A-Fist adjusted her microphone. ”This is going to be a match decided by the competitor’s ability to overcome adversity. If you ask me, Taihei looks more comfortable in the water. Ice floats, after all.”

“You’re right about that, Pac!” Dan answered. “Still, this is one fish that for once likes to stay out of water!”

Now, on paper, Taihei’s superior to Victoria. The first is a powered-up Monster Girl with two specialities and ridiculous stats. The second is an only relatively strong ice-magic girl with Duplication. On paper, Taihei should win. However, as all members of Asengav’s troop knew…

‘Tell you what, I’ll prove it. I’m going to win against you. I’m going to win against you without ever touching you,’ Victoria boasted confidently.

Dan began a countdown. "3, 2, 1...Rumble!"

‘Hmpf. Very well. Don’t tell me I didn’t warn you…’ Taihei said, preparing herself… and then blasting off! … Or, not so much blasting off, as suddenly she started falling towards her opponent! Because, while Taihei’s agility is pathetic, she could use powerful Gravity-magic to attract herself to her opponent!

Victoria easily slipped out of the way. This because Taihei is primarily a distance-fighter, attacking an opponent with her rear or chest did not come naturally to her. Victoria, on the other hand, is a close-combat brawler, used to fighting through the experiences of a myriad of duplicates.

Victoria looked like she had the perfect opportunity to make a counter-attack at Taihei. She did nothing, just let Taihei slip right by, and Victoria vaulted elsewhere onto the platform. This was partly because she’d promised to win without touching Taihei. It was also partly because both of them knew an unarmed attack from Victoria wouldn’t do a darn thing to Taihei, she’s far too sturdy.

"Taihei starts off with a forward charge...And misses!" Dan commented. "Victoria dodged, showing off her superior speed!"

”I recognize that spectral float from anywhere, it’s the dead man’s drop.” Pac-A-Fist pointed at the fighters. ”Gravity girls have been causing ring outs with that for ages. Victoria was wise not to counterattack so suddenly. A sudden shift in mass could see her struck by Taihei’s… Butt!”

Taihei, of course, only needed to refocus her gravity constantly to be directed directly towards Victoria… but then she had to stop right in front of Victoria, because agile Victoria had just slipped sideways so the part of Taihei that’d hit Victoria wouldn’t have been her chest or butt. Taihei took the arduous task of needing to turn herself in the air, but Victoria was far faster than Taihei’s abysmal agility could track. Of course, had this been a regular battle Taihei would just have grabbed Victoria with gravity-magic, but she couldn’t do that here.

"Taihei can't keep up with the frosty fille, but it seems Victoria's not countering either! It's a game of cat and mouse, but the feline has left the table!"

”Or is it a game of dog and cat, and they’re both chasing their tails?”

A minute or two of ridiculous chase later, and an annoyed Taihei was floating in the air on one side of a platform and a smirking Victoria stood on the other, her arms crossed.

‘… You’re… not going to win like this,’ Taihei told her, as time went on.

‘Won’t I? If the competitors don’t touch one another even once in the fight, who will they declare the winner? I think it’s pretty clear that I’m the one in control, here,’ Victoria said, giving Taihei a nasty little smirk.

"Unbelievable! Victoria is going for the stalling tactic!" Dan's commentary blared from the speakers. "This reminds me of Grulovian Keijo championships of '86, when Olga Baralikov and Tatyana Svenechie were locked in a bust-to-bust standoff for 23 minutes! That was the year the first revision to the rules regarding the five-minute limit was added!"

‘… Hmpf. We won’t need to find out,’ Taihei said, looking down. The platform was just floating on the water, it wasn’t secured. Victoria was standing on the opposite end. A plan took shape. She’d slam down on this end, using gravity-magic to prevent water from touching her. The platform would act as a giant flipper, launching Victoria into the air. Victoria had no magic to help her while air-born, so then Taihei would easily fly up and intercept her in mid-air and strike her out of the stage. Yes. That would do.

Taihei started suddenly accelerating rapidly down towards the side of the platform!

‘Ah-’ Victoria blinked and her expression got a slightest tinge of worry as she calculated the result of Taihei striking down into that side of the platform, and-!

A giant geyser of water suddenly erupted, blasting water straight up and raining down on the sides. The platform shook somewhat, and Victoria had momentarily frozen her feet into the platform with ice-magic as she struggled to retain balance for a bit, but balance was eventually regained. She stared wide-eyed at what had just transpired. She took a deep breath, hit her esophagus twice with a gentle fist, then held her hands up to her mouth to make a tunnel to shout through.

I TOLD YOU SO!

She shouted at the Taihei-shaped miss in constructional engineering that normally definitely wouldn’t have happened but Taihei was just so unlucky it happened to be exactly where she hit down and she struck straight through it directly down into the water below.

"I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!" Dan screamed.
"Taihei has broken the very platform itself! Her butt smashed right through it like a wrecking ball! She's out! She's done! Oh, how unfortunate! But sometimes that’s the way the waves crash!"

Pac-A-Fist shrugged her shoulders. ”Arctic anchor is a staple of ice girls, but I haven’t seen it since the ice cap melt in ‘07. Regardless, Taihei just needs to understand the game better. Breaking the island is a valid tactic, but not if you sink into the drink in the process.”

“Well, only one thing lefto to do, Dan added, and annlunced: "The winner is Victoria!"

”Called it, BTW.”

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES CAN THE AUDIENCE FIND OUT.

‘Er…’ Tullia looked awkwardly at where Freya stood. On two legs. Hands on her hips. Tail swinging ominously. Looking exceedingly displeased with all of this.

‘… So? Are you going to, or no?’ Freya asked, frowning. After all, Mariette had ordered the least likely to win future battles to forfeit.

‘I mean, I know, but…’ Tullia muttered. They were standing on just two of multiple rows of floating circular balls that were tied together to form a bit of a maze of a stage. Still, there wasn’t much action right now as both combatants were inspecting one another.

‘But what?’ Freya asked, less than impressed.

‘It’s just… I really kinda want to try myself out, kind of? I was excited. But… I didn’t think I’d…’ That she’d be facing Freya, specifically.

Dan’s voice came out of the speakers. “We’re back at Keijo Live, continuing the match with Mariette’s posse: Tullia the Impeccable Ace of Ice, and Freya the Ferocious Fighter! Much like Penny, Freya is also considered one of the crowd favorites to win the tournament. But how will she fare when pitted against her fellow comrade Tullia in the Sphere Street!”
The camera panned over the arena.
“One of the more advanced Keijo environments, the Sphere Street demands expert balance, agility and foresight in the players’ movements. Can they keep the ball rolling, or will they tuck and tumble?”

Tullia heard Dan’s announcement and got nervous. She had the agility to easily manouver the stage, but Freya, and her orders… She closed her eyes momentarily. On one hand, she didn’t want to disappoint the crowd. She also wanted to try herself out a bit more. Yet, there were her orders, and also what she’d risk if she were to actually try to battle Fre-

The side of Freya’s rear slammed mercilessly into Tullia’s stomach, the poor girl not even having realized she’d made a mistake by closing her eyes. Freya had transported herself between her standing position all the way to Tullia’s would-be safe distance away in the almost literal blink of an eye. No magic had been used, it was just Freya’s sheer speed and physical prowess that had completely overwhelmed her opponent. Tullia’s eyes had time to open in shock before she was launched off the platforms at breakneck speeds directly for the water.

“And Freya slams hard!” Dan commented with high energy.
“What an amazing play! The Fighter struck like a snake from ambush! It was so fast we need a replay of that later!”

”That one’s sure to please the fans.” Pac-A-Fist added. ”Unless they were hoping for an evenly matched opponent. We’ll just have to see how the match develops!”

‘Don’t take your eyes off an enemy during combat,’ Freya told, like a lesson for someone less experienced than her, her face partly turned to keep one eye locked on Tullia’s trajectory. ‘Right, that should be it…’ Freya was about to say, then grunted as the scent of magic filled the air.

Tullia slid to a halt, a hand on her stomach. She felt it, Freya had held back. Of bloody course she had, or she’d have taken a chunk out of Tullia’s stomach. Tullia gasped where she was kneeling, before slowly standing up straight, on her island of ice in the midst of the watery pool.

‘Geh. Is that allowed in the rules?’ Freya asked.

“Of course it is!” Dan answered! “Tullia has managed to recover with the “Frozen Platform” technique, a classic move for Ice specialists. She is still in the game!”

Freya grunted in reply.

‘I… I won’t fall that easily, Freya,’ Tullia gasped, still feeling like she had to keep fighting, even against the most physically powerful of them. ‘I will keep fighting. Even if I have to-’

Freya gripped the ball she was standing on, kicked it into a ridiculous spin, leapt to another ball and then leapt back to strike her butt against it and send it spiraling through the water towards Tullia, creating a small tidal-wave as it went.

Dan gasped audibly. “And here it comes! The secret of the Sphere Street!”

‘… Eh?’ The still recovering Tullia looked up with dead-looking eyes as the huge, loud, watery wave created by the butt-blasted ball completely overtook her island of ice and took both her and the island down beneath the surface without any form of attempt at countering.

“AHHHH! And there she goes! Freya has managed to use the arena itself as a weapon, using her incredible Keijo skills to finish the fight!”

Freya, meanwhile, had used the force of the impact to ricochet herself back to one of the other, safe balls that she could stand on, putting her hands back on her hips and sighing. ‘Are we done now?’ she asked the judges.

“And that attitude! Now I’m starting to worry about betting everything on Penny!” Dan joked, before he announced:

“The winner is Freya!”

Pac-A-Fist scrunched her brow. ”Of course it is.”

__________

‘Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh…’ A decently disappointed Tullia sat grunting in the stands some time later, wrapped in a blanket. She looked so down. Having seen that, and the thoughts of a certain boy coming to her mind…

‘… Hey,’ Freya said, approaching her.

‘Uh… Hi, Freya…’ Tullia muttered, tightening her blanket, assuming she was about to be scolded.

‘That was incredibly foolish. Not only did you go against direct orders, it was for something so incredibly foolish, too. You risked revealing something that could not be taken back. It was very inappropriate,’ Freya stated, confirming Tullia’s fears and making her crawl down into her blanket.

‘… But it was brave. I saw the fear in your eyes, yet you still decided to face against them. That’s not a bad quality for one of our frontline fighters. If I were to just teach you some tricks, maybe we could make something really special out of you. Would you mind?’

Tullia’s head flew out of her blanket, staring wide-eyed at a not-entirely-comfortable-looking Freya. Freya’s eyebrows twitched at suddenly being looked at, but…

‘Y-you’d…?’ Tullia stumbled on her words. Then, she smiled once again. ‘Y-yes, ma’am! I’d love it if you would, ma’am!’

‘Uuuh, perhaps, I’ll think it over,’ Freya automatically replied. Tullia blinked a little in surprise, but smiled once again. ‘Okay, ma’am! I’ll be here…!’

Freya shook her head and turned around to walk… but she found she was subjected to a weird feeling in the fact she’d just made Tullia turn from super-depressed to smiling, somehow. What… what an odd feeling.

Leila and Eric looked on with interest as the ghost Pokémon moved over towards Annica, who blinked in surprise as they gathered around her. Then Amelia asked her question. Annica looked around a little flustered, then sighed.

‘This is not going to lead you anywhere. But, fine. I guess I have no choice,’ Annica said, and pulled out a Pokéball. Leila let out a little gasp, and Eric looked on intently. The Lass brought the Pokéball to her forehead, and… ‘It’s okay. I’ll be right here. Just… stay with me, okay?’ she said, and dropped the Pokéball.

With a flash of light, a new Pokémon took shape. In shape, it was a dog standing on two legs, a pointy hat seemingly on her head, and a long tail that seemed to end in an orange paintbrush…

Pokédex Entry #235 – Smeargle, the Painter Pokémon. A special fluid oozes from the tip of its tail, which colour depends on the Smeargle and is determined at birth. It paints the fluid everywhere to mark its territory. By drawing a move with its tail, Smeargle becomes able to replicate that move whenever it desires, making it very versatile.

‘SMEARGLE!?’ the creature immediately cried out after seeing her surroundings and dashed around to hide behind Annica, looking absolutely thoroughly terrified. Annica sighed, patted her on the head and then looked with a glare at Amelia.

‘I let her out briefly while setting up camp, and she wandered off for a bit… before coming back with a full panic attack. She was so panicked I didn’t want to disturb her. She didn’t know anything about the stone, anyway, how could she have been involved? That said, fine. Let’s see what she has to say,’ Annica said, then kneeled to confront her terrified Smeargle. ‘Hey, Smeargle? Could you tell us what happened when you went off? I promise, nobody here will hurt you. If they do, I’ll deck them. Okay?’ Annica said, looking in concern at her Smeagle.

‘S-smeargle…’ Smeargle replied, somewhat hesitant but okay. With that out of the way, Smeargle stepped forward… and Annica pulled out some white drawing portraits out of nowhere, holding them up. Smeargle spun around, grabbed her tail, and quickly started drawing on the canvas Annica held out with intense force as Annica was struggling to hold the canvas steady!

‘Right, she went a little off-track there towards the end, but that’s her testimony. She protected the stone, not anything else. Does that satisfy you?’ Annica asked, crossing her arms with a “hmpf”.

‘Smeargle!’ Smeargle stated, pointing her orange tail towards Amelia.

‘Heeeeey, this makes it seem like Ledyba’s the villain!’ Eric complained, frowning at the drawings with Ledyba now hiding behind his leg.

‘Do we have any reason to believe he isn’t?’ Annica frowned right back.

‘He fled the scene! Smeargle seems like the much more likely culprit!’ Eric said, crossing his arms.

‘You’re just saying that because you don’t want to think your Ledyba would steal!’ Annica told.

The two argued for a bit, while Leila put a hand to her mouth and looked like she was thinking a bit. To herself, she said…

‘I get the feeling that enough information has been given that this case could be solved in one fell swoop now, with the right deduction. So… what are you thinking?’ she asked, looking towards Amelia.

Indeed. What does she think now?

‘Palpitoad!’ Palpitoad called in support. She can do it!

Or she could leave.
