Nah, it isn't a rule, it's just a theme.

Just pointing out that sole male protagonists tend to get "special" attention, and not necessarily the good kind.
-May or may not be treated as their personal fanservice.

Also I think we figured-out that since everything is still in the early/mid stages of colonizaton/repopulation after a war, that the gender ratio is lopsided to around 20/60/20 (Boy/girl/elderly).
