Well, let's look at their perspective on the issue. Most of them wouldn't want to hurt anything with a consciousness if they can help it. In the same way, they don't want to be on the receiving end.
Many animals have a rudimentary consciousness. But they don't care, because they don't understand. I'm a way of repaying humanities cruelty to them.
