They say it's about the journey, not the destination. This is true of many things. Pizza delivery is not one of them.

TFW you know what you want to happen but the words aren't cooperating. Why is plot suddenly so much harder to write?

Glad to see I'm not the only follower of Lord Cato, god of wisdom, on this most auspicious Superb Owl Sunday.

Bio

I am an adult, though I don't usually act like it. I'm a voracious reader, and not overly picky about books. I am artistic in a variety of areas, including music, drawing, writing, and sculpting. I have a minor obsession with dragons, and love the color violet. Fantasy is my preferred genre, be it past, future, urban...as long as it has a fantasy flavor to it. I also like scifi, mystery, and some horror. I am crazy, and I like tormenting my characters. But I don't bite...much. ^.~

@Xodus WOOO POST! Bits is not within arm's reach of the little group, so it'd be pretty hard to grab her. And she'd actively avoid it if humanly possible. Secondly, Ben is an idiot, because clearly even students should know who the Chronos are, and thus who their partners, the Lost Numbers are. Or vice versa. *shrug* Still, nice. *bounces*

@xodus Aww, I'm sorry to hear that. RL takes precedence, much as I wish it didn't. I am a little confused, though. Do you mean Kirra, or Rtron (Kiara's player)?

@xodus Hm, well you have a point with the wormhole thing, but only if we assume that Portal-style stuff works that way. I'm sure it's possible, in a world with magic, to explain it another way. *shrug* I still think it's a little silly to say line-of-sight teleportation is a basic skill but other forms of teleportation which aren't much more powerful are level 2. I mean, what sort of explanation covers the basic one that isn't space bending somehow? And if it's not, can't we say the other methods work this way as well? I do remember you saying that teleportation took a few moments, and could be detected and disrupted in combat. Though it might be interesting to have a character that had a specialization that allowed for blinking, or very fast but very short range teleportation. "Wanna hit me? I'm not there, I'm over here! But now I'm two feet to the left! Haha, missed again!"

By the way, when I say portals, I mean like in the video game with the same name. But that probably does use wormhole tech. I can't remember what the in-game explanation was of the science there.

@xodus Right, I think you mean for Chronos? And alright, I get it. Still, teleportation is a standard skill, and it's going to have a standard method. Going through shadows or mirrors only has implications if you assume there is a realm in between, instead of saying it functions like a portal from Portal. The former I could see as level two, the latter, however, should still be three. Electrical travel would be cool, and that'd work for long distances. Definitely level 2, though. However I recall you saying that there's long-distance teleportation, such as however we get to a mission location. Easy teleportation is line-of-sight only.

I'm not entirely clear how level two works. Also some stuff has come up with elaborate and elegant sigils. I'd think neatness and complexity add to power and/or accuracy, possibly both. This came up elsewhere; I forget if I mentioned it here but it's not in the last two pages so if I did oh well. ^.^;; There's also been talk of sigil traps -- if you prepare a sigil but leave part unfinished, can you have something trigger it (say a much smaller cast that detects certain conditions, or a tripwire that lowers the final piece into place, or something like that)? I'd guess that the sanity drain comes when creating it, not when it goes into effect. Does there need to be active intent behind the completion, or can it be triggered by the unwary with the caster nowhere nearby? Delayed-result casts might be interesting to use as well.

Good luck on your exam! Looking forward to your post.

@xodus deconstruction/reconstruction seems a /lot/ like molecular manipulation to me. And in fact that's on the banned list, not the reserved, so is this Chrono using a skill that nobody else can use (beyond their capabilities), or is it just misplaced on your list?

Also I'd think that with something like teleportation, which is a standard skill, there would be a standard method. Anything else would be the asylum's choice, usually if it falls in their specialty.

As for shadow teleportation and mirrors, I don't see why this is a level 2 cast, /especially/ since basic teleportation is a standard skill. It's not very powerful. You said Sparks should be able to totally fry someone with a level 3, but this seems far less powerful than that.

@xodus I don't know why you'd bother to do it that way if you can do it whatever way Asylums normally do it. O.o Which you never did explain fully.

@Rumplestiltskin Sounds like vectors, and that's taken. =/

@Xodus how is acceleration molecular manipulation? You have someone that does vectors already. O.o
In Over 11 yrs ago Forum: Advanced Roleplay
@Rumplestiltskin I know it should, but I've only seen ONE fictional work that has that actually happen in a noticeable manner -- teleportation creates an audible pop for small items or a loud bang for something the size of a person, and a small gust of air.

Aslo when I say proportional, size is probably the deciding factor, but I think mass should play a role too.
In Over 11 yrs ago Forum: Advanced Roleplay
@Rumplestiltskin I think it sounds okay. Objects would need to be about the same size, and within sight. It seems like a special extension of teleportation for things other than one's self, to me. I know I discussed that with Ryver or Xodus, but I forget the details. Having them switch back is interesting, but I don't see it as necessary since teleportation is a thing. Switching with nothing (or just air) is possible, since teleportation does not currently create a loud bang from the implosion or displacement of air. Also there's probably an eventual size limit -- a building is probably a lvl 2 swap, for example.

Outside

Sparks grinned as the girl in black responded to the man teasing her with as good as she got. He enjoyed banter, far more than smalltalk. But the teen tilted his head as something occurred to him. “Wait a second, Kiara. There's me and Bits, you and Ben, tall dark and imposing, and our newest arrival. That's six. Where's seven?” He wondered if she'd just miscounted somehow, but surely not. After all, it was more likely to miss someone than count an extra as had happened in this case. He looked at the two newest additions to the little group. “Speaking of, you've got our names, but what're yours, hm? You act sophisticated,” he continued, directing this at Renault, “but any gentleman rogue knows he should give his name within the first minute or so.” Sparks grinned to show that the comment was meant in jest.

Bits' gaze, however, drifted to the woman's shadow. It had bothered her since the beginning, and now she realized why. It looked nothing like Kiara, and didn't entirely match her movements. She frowned at it. It was almost like a separate person, but that couldn't be right. Shadows didn't do such things – at least, not without alchemy, and no one in their right mind would be using their alchemy constantly. And she hoped that a student wouldn't already be far enough down the path of insanity that they weren't still in their right mind....

The woman's expression darkened further at this train of thought. The path of an Asylum was not a bright one, as the professor had so lengthily insisted. She'd never seen herself as a fighter. Sure, she'd defend people, but she wasn't the sort to be unnecessarily aggressive. Rogue asylums, though...Alchemy could cause so much pain and destruction. She'd had a glimpse of that as a child, and the idea had received nothing but reinforcement since. The power was evil, and needed to be tightly controlled – or destroyed. Nothing good came from it, and those that used it did so at the cost of their own minds. Kiara's words were true in some sense, but so few Asylums paid heed to that idea. They too seemed to forget that they were fighting fire with fire, and it would burn them and everyone near. At her side, her fingers curled into a fist. They might, but not her. The image of evil was forever burned into her mind, try as she had to forget. She glanced at Sparks and found herself wondering yet again if her brother, with his carefree manner, realized just how dark their world was – how dark she herself was.
