It is certainly not 'optimal', but it *is* doable, depending on what you want to do with it. You could go swords or valor bard and play them more like a warrior with some magical ability

That's fine, I will probly PM it first as I'm kinda setting up the basis of my sheet well up north with a reason for heading south.

Ronin - A samurai with no lord or master.

Welcome to Neo-Japan

It is the year 2202, and Mega-Corporations have ruthlessly consolidated power: they make everyone, from the lowliest wage slave to the most powerful government leader, dance to their tune. Many people sell their lives to these megacorps, believing they have no choice. With these megacorps come the exponential advancement of human society, powerful AI and sophisticated machines, biotechnology and cybernetic enhancement have become the norm, and provide numerous physical advantages- for those who can afford it. These megacorporations eclipse even governmental powers, with the entirety of many major nations being completely owned by the shareholders of various megacorps.

Neo-Japan, one of the technological capitals of the world, is one such nation under the dominion of these megacorporations. Carved into various chunks of territories by some of the largest megacorporations in the world, the majority of continental Japan has been converted into a sprawling jumble of metropolitan communities, industrial wastelands, and concrete highways bracketed by the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean.

In this era of corporations, espionage, sabotage and cutthroat business are the norm. The shadows cast by these towering metroplexes are long, and in these shadows, the world's underworlds thrive. Entire societies live and die in these shadows, relying on these black-market underworlds. They are exploited and abused, yet powerful in their own way. The Mafia, Yakuza, and other crime syndicates have grown explosively as their networks provide anything that people want to buy. The megacorps like to believe that they let these underworlds survive, for their own purposes. When the various megacorporations want something done, but don't want to dirty their hands, they often turn to elite criminal operatives within the underworld.

These criminal elites go by different names depending on where in the world one is. Here in Japan, these specialized criminals for hire are known as 'Ronin'. More than just petty pickpockets or thugs, these Ronin are the professionals of this Black-Market society. Often former Spec-Ops and soldiers from private megacorp-militaries and espionage teams, these Ronin are cut from a different fabric than your typical gun-toting thug or Yakuza enforcer. Ronin are by nature skilled warriors, saboteurs, spies, and assassins. Contracted to fulfill any and every type of underhanded task imaginable, these Ronin often work by themselves or in small teams, and are typically loyal only to themselves or to the payroll of their employer. Despite this, Ronin will typically not attack one another, unless absolutely necessary, often upholding themselves to a code of personal honor, and generally avoid wanton mass murder- though these definitions are not universal.

The Tokyo District of Neo-Japan, holds some 1 billion people within its district limits, its dense population shoved into coffin sized apartment buildings, and massive housing complexes. Some 60% of its population are affiliated with one of the big megacorps, the rest struggle to get by through temporary positions, McJobs, criminal activity, and "Gray Area" operations. Ronin fall into this last category. Tokyo's dense nature, as well as its identity as one of the most technologically advanced regions of the world, make it an ideal location of Ronin operations. Gangs fight over turf. Criminal organizations battle for control of extralegal materials. Politicians and Corporations jockey for administrative power. The Tokyo District is what Ronin like to call a "Target-Rich Environment".

Life in Neo-Japan is rough, but rough is the norm for Ronin and the rest of the Japanese Underworld. Ronin can go from working high profile jobs that earn somewhere in the tens of thousands of credits, eating at the finest establishments and sleeping in the biggest apartments, to the next day struggling to survive on scraps, hopped up on too many chems and sims to be cognizant. The life of a Underworlder isn't easy, or particularly long for that matter. But many would argue it as a better existence than to be a wageslave of a megacorporation.

This RP will revolve around a small group of Ronin, as they try to eke a living for themselves in this turmoil filled city called Tokyo. When we find ourselves involved in a job that may be just over our heads, we will be forced to do whatever we can in order to survive. Just another set of pawns in a world of corporate espionage, thrust into a world of Neo-Japan, where neighbors don't trust one another, and brothers stab each other in the back. Superhumans challenged by ideas of morality and forced to balance ethics and profit, as we fight for survival in this tumultuous underworld. How will we fare? Only time will tell.

------

Hi everyone! Welcome to the Interest Check for Ronin: Neo-Japan. This is a concept I've been toying around with in my head for some time now- as you can clearly see, it is heavily influenced by Shadowrun, as well as Ghost in the Shell, along with some of the older cannon from my other series Falling Skies. That being said, to those of you who are familiar with my Falling Skies lore, know that this is an entirely different universe. This RP will focus heavily on a small set (3-4 characters) of 'Ronin', private mercenaries if you will, analogous to Shadowrun's Shadowrunners, and like Shadowrun will hopefully feature large amounts of morally gray decisions for us to make.

Technology and Terminology

Ronin Creator

Since this RP revolves around Ronin, you need to know how to build one. As a general rule, every bit of equipment will have some sort of cost attributed to it. Each player will start out with 50,000 Credits with which to create their character. NOTE: Exceptions to the rules will be allowed, HOWEVER, I must be contacted through either PM or thread to discuss the exception you are making.

Rules:

1. This Roleplay will have above average standards. I will be expecting at least a few well written paragraphs, and absolutely NO ONE LINERS.
2. Please do not write in first person.
3. No Mary/Gary Sues, its alright for your character to be a hero, but they're not perfect.
4. No God-modding. Its no fun for anyone. Also keep in mind that your character is not invincible.
5. This RP will have mature content. Violence, foul language, and mature themes are freely allowed. However for the sake of decency any sexual acts will fade to black (or will be taken to PM) before it goes too far.
6. Player Knowledge is not necessarily character knowledge. Just because you know something (be it through OOC or someone else's post) does not necessarily mean your character knows.
7. As GM, my word is law, I will expect you to respect any executive decision I make.
8. If players find a ruling of mine unfair, they are allowed, and encouraged to speak up and offer sound reasoning to dispute my decisions. Provided the discussion is productive, polite, and reasonable, decisions I make may change.

Character Sheets:

The following are the Character Skeletons for the Ronins. Keep in mind that this team has been together for a few years. A new guy is okay, but 4 new guys is not okay. Since this is a small scale RP, it is not first come first served. Unique and eccentric is good, but you should also be able to show a degree of professionalism, otherwise it'd be pretty difficult to make it on your own- this is assuming you were working either on your own or in small groups before joining the current group. Also, there is no reason for anything to be "????" or "Classified" general knowledge is not necessarily character knowledge, and if other character's shouldn't know about something make sure you stress that. If there really is something that must be kept that top secret, PM it to me.

Here's my character for a reference/example

Hrmm. Given time restraints, I will have to pull out of this rp. I wouldn't be able to give it the time it deserves. Good luck everyone!
Who be I waiting on posts for? The answer to that question is: Most people.

Aaron Logan

Age: 24
Appearance:

A young man of African descent, Aaron Logan stands just over 180cm in height, and weighs in at roughly 75 kg. Logan is rather lithe and sinewy and he sports an athletic build suited for running and climbing. His once smooth complexion is pockmarked and marred by various scrapes, cuts, and injuries not properly healed. His hair is cut close, and his eyes are a dark, calm brown.

Race: Human

Personality:
Direct and to the point, this quiet, serious man is rather blunt. Level headed and calm, Logan has a very analytic attitude and can be very perceptive and intuitive in regards to people. Aloof but confident, Logan acts on a mixture of instinct, and tactical awareness. Unless he has a well established relationship, Logan is typically distrustful of others, and will often show a lack of compassion an disregard for those he doesn't know- though children appear to be an exception to this rule. Possessing a well developed, but jaded sense of morality, Logan is quite gray in regards to ethics. He acts in what he believes are in the best interests of himself and those he cares about- not necessarily caring for what is good or bad.

Skills/Attributes:
  • Tracking/Navigation - Aaron is an excellent tracker, his keen eyes and senses easily picking out details in the land while following or searching for individuals or creatures. Aaron is also well practiced in traversing most landscapes with little difficulty, running, climbing, swinging, and other such modes of personal transportation come easily to him.
  • Hacking - Instructed in the methods of hacking computer systems while living at the present war base, given enough time, Aaron can hack his way through and up to some military grade systems.
  • Survival - A key skill that any wastelander picks up in order to live. Aaron knows how to rummage and scavenge like the rest of them, and knows how to properly hunt and safely consume various wasteland wildlife.
  • Melee Combat - Bladesmanship and Fisticuffs. While Aaron is plenty capable of fending off a feral ghoul, facing down an untrained fighter, or holding his own against a raider, he will have difficulty besting any well practiced duelist or fighter
  • Marksmanship - Keen eyes and a patient demeanor contribute much to Aaron's marksmanship. A crack shot with a crossbow or a firearm, Aaron can put a fist sized group of crossbow bolts in a target from over 90 yards away, though his most common engagement rage is closer to 30-50 yards, as the speed and potential killing power of arrows and bolts start to degrade at that range.
  • Guerrilla Tactics - Not capable of handling large groups of foes through his own combat prowess, Aaron relies on traps, misdirection, tricks, and illusion to throw his enemies into disarray. Often using his terrain to his advantage, Aaron will patiently pick at his foes over periods of time rather than striking at them forcefully in hopes of a decisive victory.

Back-story:
Born in the ruins of Winchester, Aaron, like most, had a very tumultuous childhood and like many other children, was lucky to make it through his first year of life. Forced to learn how to scavenge from a young age, near starvation and hardship was routine for Aaron and the group of scavengers he was born into. A sort of clan, made up of a few small families, these scavengers roamed from place to place, avoiding raiders, marauders and slavers, and scrounging the city ruins for valuable food, water, and other resources. The group’s number fluctuated often- close friends dying or abandoning the group, or newcomers desperate for survival joining in.

Around the age of 12, Aaron’s group of scavengers came upon an old pre-war military base, inhabited by the descendants of one of the UK’s pre-war military units, calling themselves the Regiment. While originally only interacting with the scavengers to trade for food and other scavenged resources, the pre-war base eventually allowed the scavenger to enter the base and integrated them with the Regiment. Integrating most of the younger scavengers into their ranks, the Regiment took advantage of the scavenger's affinity for sneaking and scampering around in the wastes, teaching them combat skills, and warfare techniques from the stores of manuals and equipment within their base. Much more flexible and adaptable than the strict, by the books tactics utilized by the Regiment regulars, these new scavenger-soldier hybrids became one of the cornerstones of the Regiment, allowing them to quietly observe potential foes and raiders from afar, and allowing them to make precise strikes to defend themselves, as well as being able to safely scavenge and operate away from the base for long periods of time.

Young Aaron, at only 16 years old, was one of the primes of their scavenger-soldier force. Easily picking up and learning the tactics and techniques taught to him by the Regiment's regular military men, Aaron proved to be quite resourceful and capable, smartly picking his fights and always managing to make it back to the settlement with a pack full of supplies. A talented marksman with his pre-war crossbow, as well as a capable survivalist, Aaron, was regularly praised by his instructors, and was often looked up to by younger, aspiring soldier-scavengers.

As the years went on, the Regiment slowly began to run out of its stockpiled supplies. The military base had long since used up the majority of its weapons and ammunition supplies, firearms were reserved only for the top ranking guardsmen of the military base, forcing the rest of the people in the base to use more primitive crossbows and melee weapons. The base had also scavenged almost all of the usable supplies within the immediate area, and its scavengers had to go out farther and into more dangerous territories for longer periods of time to acquire the supplies needed to keep the base running. This, along with numerous attacks from marauders, raiders, and slavers had stretched the people of the Regiment thin. Eventually, short on numbers and supplies, the remaining men and women of the Regiment were forced to abandon their base and flee with their remaining supplies.

The survivors eventually found their way to Silvershaw, a small town built around the husk of a Haven, an old pre-war shelter. These survivors eventually integrated themselves with the village of Silvershaw, proving once again how their soldier-scavenging skills could be useful. Rebranding themselves as 'Rangers', Aaron and the rest of the survivors from the old Regiment pre-war base often serve as scouts for the town of Silvershaw.

Other: Nada.
Since we have a lot of stabby stabby characters, I might rework mine to give him a bit more utility instead of combat skill, since most of the combat bases can be covered. Maybe I'll give him some hacking skill.. Just gotta figure how to work that into the backstory
Fallout 3 you get the Lincoln repeater@vietmyke

True, that doesn't make it any less old though. The Garand was the service weapon of wwii, which was over 3 centuries ago. I never said it couldn't be a thing though, I was just noting how old the platform was.
Gonna be making a queen's guard. Or, supposedly a queen's guard.

Armed with an old M1 Garand with a bayonet attached to it. With no bullets.

That's a REALLY old weapon. The M1 is already pretty old nowadays, wasn't prewar fallout like 2070?

Nice choice though, first weapon I ever fired was an M1, really kills your shoulder after a while.
@Luminosity ayy two scouts. I feel like these two (Lux and Logan) have very complimentary skills too.
-- Posting what I have. Will give this a once over once I'm back.
