Now I am curious as to what a collab post is, and how it differs from the everyday back and forth Rp.

A collab is basically when you get one or more homies on something google docs, or a pad (Titanpad, Piratepad, Etherpad...), and you all write a post together. Which is easier for conversations, and more flowing scenes.

Much like what @Mr Allen J said where you work together to write up a post. For a big event or critical situation it can really help as you're not waiting hours for a reply off someone, but instead have it as part as your post.

My issue was that everyone else was collaborating and I wasn't, so I never felt like I was a part of that cool action everyone was writing about.

This is not to say collabs are bad, I just didn't enjoy them when they we're used so often.

I dunno - I actually enjoy collab posting more than a back and forth style especially when it's rping with a larger group of people. Like @NuttsnBolts I am also living in a region where when I'm online most of my rp partners are in bed, but I don't find the wait a major issue to me. Rather, I don't like it when it becomes frustrating that you want to move the plot forward but there's very little you can do without going into godmodding their characters (plus, I bloody hate one-liners).

I personally prefer collab posts to single posts since it's far faster to get through an event. I mean, single posts are fun and all, but they tend to take too much time to be efficient.

In the RP I'm running, a good 90% of all posts are collabs, and we would be at like 150 posts if they were all single.

It's essentially the same as what you said what it differs from. The main difference is that, while back-and-forth posting is indeed like collab posts, the latter acts more like a chapter in a book rather than machinegun-posting.

But then it's just a bunch of 1x1s in the same thread? And, doesn't it form unnecessary cliques?

Not really. Depends on how you pull it off, I guess. In my RP, I tend to get as many people involved in collabs as I can - and do different plotlines, move characters to different places, etc.... As for cliques, I don't think so.

Isn't that just normal IC interaction, then? What if you do a collab with, for example, 3 out of 4 people—what is that last person supposed to do?

Seems to me that it adds an unnecessary barrier to player interaction. You have to contact whoever you want to collab with privately/specifically instead of just interacting with their character right away in the roleplay.

Well, in a way it is more normal IC interaction - except, far more flowing, and honestly, quicker. You can react to the characters right then and there, instead of a back and fourth - especially if you're more of a "daily" poster like myself.

What if you do a collab with, for example, 3 out of 4 people—what is that last person supposed to do?

All we literally have to do is wait for the last person to come online. Most people aren't obnoxiously impatient enough to just cut people out of a collab.

You have to contact whoever you want to collab with privately/specifically instead of just interacting with their character right away in the roleplay.

... I don't see how this is honestly a problem. At all. Let's say that you didn't want to collab, but wanted to do something with another dude or dudette. How would that be any different...?

Then again, this is a subjective matter. I may like collabs - you may not. That makes one of us.

I really shouldn't have returned to reading comments on YouTube. Now I'm participating in a debate between who would win in a fight, Lightning from Final Fantasy, or Wonder Woman. Problem is, we're both fanboys, so both of us are going to be stubborn, make idiotic arguments that lead nowhere, and give each other headaches for...probably about a week and a half.

I should really know better than to argue in a YouTube comment section. Crap.

Being part of a popular fandom that fills up rps so fast you don't have time to make a characer sheet before all slots are filled already.

I've found that to be a huge problem honestly. It can be somewhat stymied by a good GM who looks actively (keyword) for newplayers, and to welcome them in, but yeah, I've found collabs can be a overdone.

It's a huge time saver, but when you overdo it, you do create cliques, and a bunch of 1x1 fluff that doesn't effect everyone else. If that keeps up, alot of people won't bother reading it, and that makes it many 1x1's that sometimes cross interact.

Collaborations have their time and place; “machine gun posting” have their time and place. It’s up to the RPer to decide what is appropriate for the situation.. That said I do prefer the latter or the former as I’ve seen more RPs stagger due to lack of consistent activity in a collab (which can make solo posts impossible in some cases) than seeing them fail due to the alternative.

I know it may seem like an odd bitch, but for me, it's pm's. You'll be in a convo with someone discussing rp (or anything else) and they just poof on you. I can understand it once in a while, but constantly? Seriously, have some class and let someone know if you have things to do. It's just down right rude to leave someone hanging.

This, I have never ran into a RP that was TOO big.

Beware, rant ahead and I promise it won't make sense.

I've finally found the kind of players I want to RP with, but I have filled up my quota, and I don't have enough time to write with them. :'(

So many good points here!!!!!! xD

Guiding an RP is something I know I have trouble with, but I've seen two extremes. There the ones that are so linear that players feel their character cannot go through that door first because they'll spoil the surprise the GM has set up (Thus creating a terrible overall flow), and ones that the GM says, "Here's your sandpit, now play!!!" and players have no idea what to do because they simply lack inspiration, or they expected to be hand held by the GM. Positives and negatives for both styles, but ultimately with the wrong group it just ends up falling apart... and I've been on the GM end of that thinking, "What did I do wrong?" :\

That next part, I call them followers. People who don't know how to take the reigns and want to be a witnessing character. Had a few friends that had 1x1s with Followers and they hated it because they weren't being challenged by the other player.

Big thing on that which I saw recently was a player that wanted to enter an RP as a villain character when it was strictly stated that it is a story about the hero's struggles and how they themselves are becoming anti heros. So this player went a head, made up his own CS layout, enter it into the RP, then had the Audacity to say "We'll see if the GM accepts it" when I pointed out so many processes that he neglected from the start. Why!??!?!?!

Oh, and I had an advanced RP where someone replied with a 1 liner...

GMs that take on a bunch of players and then wait for absolutely everyone to post before doing anything at all.
