It says that the minimum requirement is 2-3 paragraphs per post, yet everyone post 5-10 paragraphs per post. I mean I can post 5 or 6 paragraphs, but I just want to know how much paragraphs should I do per post?

2-3 paragraphs are minimum for most games, but do understand a lot of people write collaborations which make posts look huge and oftentimes, reacting to relevant posts just can't be done in a couple paragraphs. It might look intimidating, but keep in mind that you don't have to finish a post in a si gle sitting. It's not uncommon for games to go a couple days, if not a week or more, without an IC post and still be perfectly healthy. It's a classic case of quality verses quantity, even if sometimes people write massive walls of unnecessary text. Don't fret about it!

As many paragraphs as it takes, really. Usually that's around 4-6 for most, off the top of my head.

In addition, if you'd like in the game of mine you're currently signed up for I can provide feedback on your posts. Generally if you can hang with me, Advanced standards should be nothing to sweat. =)

Protip: if you're afraid of not having enough material don't be afraid of using dialogue because that counts as its own paragraphs.

Thanks for the feedback, guys! I have been trying to make advance posts lately, here is an example of one (Read the second post).

Having paragraphs as a standard is quite bad, as a paragraph can be just a single sentence or something absurd like a thousands words. In any case, word count should mark the standard, but then people will bitch about quantity versus quality.

All paragraphs have three parts: topic sentence, supporting sentences, and sometimes also concluding sentences (,mostly in academic works). The topic sentence states the main idea of the paragraph. It limits the topic to one specific area that can be discussed completely in the space of a single paragraphβ€”this is also called controlling idea. For example: Gold (topic) is prized for two important characteristics (controlling idea). This would be the first sentence of a paragraph discussing why Gold is prized metal, and its supporting sentences explains or prove the two important characteristics.

What people tend to do is that they break new paragraphs for no particular reason. I noticed the same mistake in your post, but that's alright. From your post, the first paragraph should have been this:

Blair lay on a bed within the Motel 6, she never motels, it's like home to hookers and business men looking for a good time with them. [...] It was on the news and talking about the overcrowded hospitals and then an influenza spreading after Black Friday, Blair then realized that things were going crazy and these days could be the last of mankind.

And the second should have started with this:

Her phone rang and she answered it, "Hello?", then a man's voice was on the line and said, "Confirm your identity." [...] she gone to Google Maps and saw the waypoint, it was nearby her and she ran towards the waypoint.

In a nutshell, a paragraph should entail things related to a single idea, and when that idea has been discussed, you move on to the next paragraph no matter how long or short your first paragraph was!

It varies between rps and is always a good thing to ask the GM beforehand. Minimum advance standards (2-3 paragraphs) isn't really difficult, but the massive length to which some posts can reach is a turn off for me at times. I think games which mark themselves as High Casual tend to normally expect 2-3 paragraphs per post but also limit the upper reaches of how long a post can be so it's not as absurdly long as some Advanced rps can reach, but again it varies. It also depends on the post in question and what there is context wise within the scene. Some scenes will require/inspire more writing, others less.

I don't know, if dialogue is just used a filler for a post, I'd get annoyed reading it if it had no merit or value to the post. Don't force writing or try to use smoke and mirrors. I try to discourage posters to rely on just doing a back-and-forth between them and a NPC or secondary character. (ex: someone plays as siblings and they tend to post the siblings interacting with each other and no one else) Collabs are different of course but it's easy to tell if a writer is interested and engaged, or nervous and drawing a blank. Some posts don't need to span for miles and miles, each roleplay is different. I don't fret too much, Rare. In time, your reservations won't be so daunting. You just need to jump in and try, don't psych yourself out or compare yourself to someone else.

Just write for you and your fellow buddies. A good story will come without pressure or anxiety.

This, this, this.

But, to expand:

From what I've seen, the Advanced Section isn't monitored by moderators, and so the actual guidelines are to justify GMs enforcing their preferences. That is to say, it's really up to the GMs what their standards are.

GMs vary. Some value post length. Others don't. I certainly don't when I GM. The reason for this is that post length is a hugely arbitrary factor. Theoretically, you could randomly write five paragraphs on how your character feels about different foods in the middle of a fight scene - it won't make your post better. It'll just make it longer, and worse for it. Probably for this reason, I frequently see posts of just one or two paragraphs in the Advanced Section with nobody batting an eyelid. Far more important, in my book, are decent writing ability, where your post introduces new idea and new drive to the story.

Basically, it boils down to common sense. If the GM is explicitly a stickler for post length, perhaps that's not the RP for you. However, you shouldn't let something so arbitrary put you off giving it a go, especially if you're otherwise confident in your RPing. Give it a go.

This right here is fantastic advice. Before I jumped over to being a primarily Advanced roleplayer, I was slapping high-casual labels on my RPs and I'd happily been roleplaying with several players for months, many whom I consider friends. I realized after a month or two of running my games in Casual that the standards easily met Advanced standards. So when Newguild came into being, I moved my games to Advanced and the writing quality and expectations didn't change. It felt like a good move and it was!

When you want to do a new game, ask some of your buddies if they'd be interested in doing an Advanced game with mainly them. It's hard to feel pressured to perform when it's people you're comfortable with, and most guys and gals in Advanced are super friendly. They're also usually the ones who participate in these discussions regularly because generally sharing experiences and helping less experienced players is something that only helps everyone. I've had fewer prouder moments on RPG than being told that I was the reason that a couple players tried hard to improve their writing.

Don't be afraid to challenge yourself! Just never forget you roleplay for fun.
