It seemed the weatherman had lied when he predicted a clear and sunny break from the sudden cold front they had received. Instead of sun the sky was dark and overcast, ready to pour in the blink of an eye, and it was far from warm. People’s breath rose in personal clouds of fog, hanging in the air before them as a reminder of the hostile cold.

This was not a day many wanted to be out and about, yet a lone woman walked down the street towards home. She was relatively small; maybe about 5’2 at the most; and those who didn’t know her would most likely think she was a teenager instead of a woman in her 20’s. What was even stranger was the cheery humming slipping out from under the scarf wrapped around her neck and lower face.

Suddenly though her merry humming stopped, the feeling of being watched raising the hairs on the back of her neck. Evelin had frozen, turning slightly to find the culprit and yet she saw nothing… she was alone. Her sea foam colored eyes narrowed in confusion, a hint of fear glimmering under the surface. That had been the fifth time she had felt eyes on her, and three of those had been just on her walk home, it was starting to unnerve the young woman tremendously.

Evelin really should have trusted her instincts but instead the messy haired woman turned around to continue her walk.

That mistake was the reason she was now backed in a corner, the dead end of an alley she had blindly run into. Someone, more like something, had been chasing her ever since and now it and its four companions lurched forward menacingly. Whatever it was it was clearly not human, the creatures blazing red eyes locked on her in a predatory gaze. She would have screamed, had she believed it would help, but she knew there was no one around to help so instead she chose to press herself into the brick wall and raise her arms defensively. Then, with an animalistic growl the thing lunged and Evelin, too scared to react, merely cringed and let out a shriek of terror.

He knew he was on its trail well before a terrified cry came from the alley; the sound merely helped to hasten his footsteps as the sprinted over slick pavement. The few people on the street stared at the middle-eastern man as he flew past, seemingly oblivious to anything but his odd appearance. Why was obvious- his skin was a warm caramel, yet his hair was fiery, copper-red that spiraled with waves an curls about his face and shoulders, like a blazing halo in the cold light of the evening. Not daring to slow down, he tugged the thin, pale scarf around his neck up to cover his mouth and nose as he swiftly darted around the corner. He skidded to a stop, long white coat flinging a spray of water as his ember-like eyes narrowed.

"Khalass!" The single word rang over the brick and concrete, the man's deep, commanding voice making the very air seem to hum. The beasts snarled and turned, the leader of the pack having its claw-like hand still poised for the strike. The man stepped forward then, right hand beginning to glow with a red-orange energy. "E'wedwa ela, wahsh!" The Arabic words rolled off his tongue as the light engulfed his hand, then shifted, stretching and pulling itself into the shape of a blade, long and curved. The creature gave another eerie cry, conflicted as its crimson eyes shifted from his prey and the approaching threat. It made the wrong decision.

As its sharp claws came down on the woman's arms, the stranger lunged forward, translucent spectral weapon slicing through the first of the entities with ease. Dark blood spattered as the creature fell to the ground in two pieces, which immediately began to hiss and decay. In the flurry of liquid movement, the unsettling man then dispatched the rest of them, blade sizzling with every strike that landed. Once the battle was over and carnage decorated the desolate alley, the man gave a flick of his wrist and the scimitar dissipated, flickering out of existence once more.

Slowly, he scanned the scene, golden-red eyes distant and sharp as they roved over the dissolving carcasses. Once he was sure they were dead, he turned to look at the young woman. His six-foot, broad-shouldered form towered over her as he gazed down, half-covered expression seeming disinterested. After a few heartbeats of silence, he offered his hand. "There will be more. Can you stand?"

Her entire form waited, tensed and ready to feel the monster’s attack bearing down on her much smaller frame, yet it never came. She did not dare to open her eyes and discover why though, instead keeping them screwed shut in fear.

Evelin could hear an unfamiliar voice call out, the language not one she recognized, but they spoke with authority. Then, without any more of a warning, she made out the sound of blade meeting flesh. Her entire body curled tighter, flinching noticeably when she heard something heavy hit the ground. It was soon followed by several more sounds of scuffling, each followed by the thud of another form hitting the alley pavement. Then it all went silent.

"There will be more. Can you stand?"

A pair of sea-foam colored eyes blinked open as she looked up at the towering figure, the terrified and shocked orbs peering out from under a curtain of dirty blonde hair. Evelin was shocked, not sure it was possible for a lone man to take on the creatures who had suddenly disappeared. She opened her mouth to reply but her throat was dry and thus she merely nodded. A little unstable and shaky the woman hoisted herself back to her feet, putting a hand against the wall for some form of support. That’s when she realized his words, her entire body going rigid as cold fear swept over her. There were more of those…things? “Wait… what were those things, why are they after me…. And who are you?” she asked, finally regaining her ability to speak. If she hadn’t been in a state of shock she might have remembered to thank this stranger sooner, but in her panic she had forgotten.

A sudden appolegetic look overtook her face as she realized how rude she had just been. “Sorry, I just bombarded you with questions. I really should be saying thank you, I don’t know what would have happened if you hadn’t been here.” She quickly adds.

His eyes narrowed again as the human woman spoke, panic obviously washing over her as she rambled. They did not have time for this, but compassion moved him to at least give a short answer. As she added an expression of gratitude, he reached up to pull the scarf away from his face. The motion revealed a refined, yet slightly rugged face- what one might consider the perfect masculine beauty. Defined cheek bones, a wide but defined nose and full lips countered those unusual, sharp eyes. Matching the fiery curls that fell about his shoulders, a sleek goatee adorned his chin, lining the slight frown that crossed features.

"Those were wahsh- dark entities, spirits that are normally not found in this realm. As for what they would have done to you, they would have taken your soul after eating your physical shell." He responded matter-of-factly, faintly accented voice lacking any real emotion. "To further answer you, you may call me Samuel. Now, as I said, there will be more. If you wish to live, we must leave." With that, he turned on his heel and started down the alley, the mists from the beasts parting at his feet.

Though he said little, his mind ran wild. While such creatures had little influence in the mortal plane, they were not uncommon. The bizarre thing was that they dared to appear in a physical form. There must have been something drawing them... something that pushed them to risk death, but what? The girl did not seem any different from other mortals, but he had yet to look at her aura. If she did in fact have something that made her a target he would have to--

"Bah" he muttered under his breath. He did not have to do anything, he was not one of them anymore. Protecting mortals and keeping balance was no longer something he needed to trouble himself with. He would simply get this human to someplace safe, set up wards and leave. His brethren could take care of the rest if further meddling was needed.

The woman was stunned, taking in his unemotional tone as he relayed what would have become of her had he not stopped them. They would have…eaten me…At the realization her mind seized up, becoming lost in a continuous replay of the creature’s attack. She was so distracted by these thoughts that she did not realize he had begun to walk away, and then suddenly aware of his disappearing presence she dashed after him.

Evelin came to walk beside him, matching her pace with his long stride. She glanced over at the taller individual, her lips parting for a second as she was about to ask him where they were going but he looked lost in his own thoughts. Her lips snapped shut, her question unvoiced and left for a later time, and without a word she turned to look ahead of her.

Left to her thoughts the previous events once again began their grisly replay. She could almost imagine the searing pain that would have come from those sharpened claws. Surely, inspired by these wonderings at what would have occurred, the replays turned into nightmarish scenes where those same claws ripped at her skin.

Evelin quickly shook those visions off, letting out a sigh as she tried to expel the thoughts from her mind. The young woman had a feeling that if she did not find something to keep her occupied she would only return to those dreadful visions. Her eyes suddenly glanced over at Samuel, finding him still in his thoughts, so she took this opportunity to really look at him.

Compared to the people Evelin had known Samuel was a strange yet alluring sight, especially his copper curls and deep ember eyes. A blush suddenly flourished over her cheeks, being hidden behind the scarf wrapped around her to ward out the cold, her eyes darting away in embarrassment at her actions.

I shouldn’t be staring at him!! she mentally scolded. Her eyes once again were fixed ahead, trying not to look his way again for fear of getting lost in his strange appearance once again.

“Where are we going?” she asked, not even giving him a side glance as she voiced her earlier question.

Though his eyes never strayed from the scenery ahead, he knew her gaze was on him. It hardly came as a surprise, most everyone stared and whispered under their breath when he was in public. At first, this attention annoyed him, stirring harsh glares and brusque comments from the normally calm man. However, over his long years on the physical plane, he learned to adapt and ignore it. Instead, he focused on keeping a brisk pace as they walked past the darkened shop fronts and other evening wanderers. When she spoke up again, his bright eyes swept across the street, taking in anything and everything with vigilance. In the shadows of another side-street, bestial figures stirred. This made him frown again, lips curving downward ever so slightly. His eyes darted to the left as they passed an alley. More of them were pushing at the boundaries of the planes, he could feel it. This girl was not just a random target, was she?

After a few more moments of silent thought, he responded with another simple, straightforward statement. "Somewhere safe." He had decided that simply leaving her in her home with wards would not be enough. Something was wrong with the entire situation... it was not too uncommon for a single creature or small pack of them to slip into the physical realm corporeally, but this amount was unheard of in modern times. Why would so many of them risk death to get at her? Regardless of the answer to that question, he would take her to his home. He had talismans, wards and spells over the entire building- plenty to conceal her from the entities, as well as pretty much anything else.

Sliding his hands into the pockets of his wool coat, he continued his watchful guard and lead her along, a turn taking them down another store-front lined street. Neon signs glared past the various wares displayed before the windows, the unnatural hues casting an eerie glow over the concrete. They were close, close enough that he could feel the energy that radiated from his home. However, he also knew the creatures were closing in again, clearly driven enough to show no fear of his power. Gritting his teeth a bit, he lead the young woman to a small alley between an antiques shop and a coffee house. The two businesses contrasted in a bizarre manner. The cafe was open, well lit and sleekly decorated with modern touches, like a sign proclaiming free wi-fi. The cluttered curio shop, on the other hand, proudly held ancient sculptures, books and artifacts; all laid across fine, but weathered arabesque cloth. Behind the protective iron gating, the words "El-Amin Antiquities" was painted in ornate script, only able to be read due to the soft lighting that illuminated the front displays. The silent Arabic man paid no heed, however, simply slipping between the brick walls and into the darkness.

Disposal bins and litter dotted the precarious walkway, where half-frozen water from vents made the ground slick. As he dodged the first collection of bags and boxes, the hairs on the back of his neck started to raise. Just a bit further- they just had to make it to the back door. As his eyes scanned the alley, his fingers clenched into a fist, heating as energy was once again called forth. In a tense silence, they had made it half-way down the narrow path. Suddenly the shadows in front of and behind them coalesced, twisting and churning as the entities forced their forms to be tangible. Samuel swore under his breath and ripped his hands free of his coat, red-orange glow already pulsing off of them.

Well, that was specific. Evelin could almost roll her eyes at how non-descriptive that answer was. She did not push the matter though, sticking with staring fixedly ahead of her at the passing scenery. Stores, both familiar and not, danced past her peripheral vision. She had visited this part of town once or twice since moving here for work, these visits did not occur often though due to her busy schedule. It seemed they were becoming further and further from her home, her hopes of curling up on the couch and lighting the fireplace coming crashing down around her. That would not happen anytime soon.

Unlike Samuel, Evelin was completely oblivious to the beings lurking in the shadows. She had not a single inkling that she was being watched, hunted, and searched out by these creatures. Her mind was instead questioning just where Samuel was leading her, growing a little wary when he began to guide her through a dimly lit and dirty alley way. Evelin stepped cautiously over puddles and heaps of trash, the hairs of her neck standing up as she felt the air shift.

Her entire body tensed, stopping right behind Samuel, terror filled eyes watching as the entities appeared around them. Evelin’s breath caught in her throat as she looked around, realizing that their attention was turned to her with hungry and wanting stares. Ice cold dread coursed through her veins, noticing how outnumbered and trapped they were.

Sensing the girl’s fear one of the beasts lunged forward, causing a chain reaction as several others made to grab her first. They had seemingly forgotten the presence of Samuel, unlike a few of them who slowly approached the man with some sense of caution.

Evelin let out a squeak, her voice dying in her throat. Terrified, she cringed inward but the nightmarish hands never reached her. Instead she heard several heavy thumps and when she looked back at her assailants they were picking themselves up after hitting some invisible force.

Back on their feet once more they lashed out again and Evelin watched with shocked eyes as they bounced off some sort of wall. The air around her shifted at the contact, revealing a bubble of dark and incomprehensible energy. Then all of a sudden it was gone, the space around her growing brighter now that it had dissipated.

Even though the hindrance was gone the creatures did not move to lunge again, choosing to rejoin the ranks of monsters around the two.

Just what was that?

Believing it to have been Samuels doing the woman glanced over at him, noting the fighting stance he had taken up and the glowing embers around his hands. “Whatever that was… thanks.” She quickly said, then without another utterance she turned her attention back to watching the beasts that surrounded them.

Samuel swore aloud when the creatures attacked, he was unable to form his energy fast enough! He turned, ready to use his fists against the entities when the light from the single lamp within the alley dimmed. His eyes widened as the darkness formed around the young woman, leaving her attackers to bounce off what seemed to be a solid wall. Could it be... She had his power? That would explain the convergence of the dark creatures, certainly, but how did a mere human come to have it? He could only stand there as the shadows diminished, watching the woman with shock written across his every feature as she thanked him, thinking somehow it was his doing.

This distraction was a perfect chance for the entities that had been slowly creeping towards him. With a snarl, the lead creature lashed out, long, wicked talons ripping through the wool and linen of Samuel's clothing to rake at his flesh. He gasped as pain erupted across his back and quickly spun around, one hand charged with power delivering a brutal backhanded slap that sent the monster head-first into a wall. There were too many of them to take on safely, at least while the human was beside him. Defensive maneuvers were needed. "Get the wall to your back." He called to his new companion, pushing her towards one side of the narrow alley. Once she had done so, he positioned himself in front of her, making the entities think twice about another aggressive attack. This bought him the time he needed he conjure the energy for an attack of his own.

Bringing his hands together, he pressed the first and second digits of each together, the warm glow of his power transferring solely to that point. "Once this is cast, we run. follow me and do not look back." He said, voice showing obvious strain as he concentrated. After a few heartbeats, he slowly pulled his hands apart, a ribbon of translucent, tangible power stretching out from between them. Glowing significantly brighter on the edges, it widened to nearly half a foot wide. As it grew, strange, fluid symbols shimmered into existence, flowing along the center line of the band. Once he deemed the spell to be charged enough, the taciturn man jerked his hands outward, snapping the connection between his body and the energy. The band split and encircled each creature, eliciting wails of pain and frustration from the beasts as they became trapped.

Samuel reached back to grab the young woman's hand, then ran, pulling her along as he made for the small back door to the antiques shop. Not daring to take the time to unlock it, he pressed his free palm to the metal. It hissed as it heated, becoming red-hot, then white within seconds. A shove released the nearly-liquid bolt and the door swung inward. After quickly ushering the girl inside, he slammed it closed, the metal binding itself again rapidly in the cool air. Panting slightly, the Arabic man allowed himself to slump back against the wall, a light grunt of pain reminding him that he had been struck.

After catching his breath, he brought his gaze to rest on the young woman he had just saved twice. Though it did not look like it was purposeful, he was certain she had used shadow magic- umbrakinesis. Such a rare gift- if one could call it such; he could not help but once again question how a human had it though. Such abilities were only found within creatures of the night, like... him. The thought left a bitter taste in his mouth, but he could not deny that this girl, this human he met by chance, might be just the thing he needed.

Evelin had been so shocked by the monsters attack on Samuel that if he hadn’t pushed her along she most likely would still be frozen in terror. The motion though pulled her from it, and in seconds she was pressed against the wall with him before her while she listened to his instructions. Just what is he planning? she questioned.

The next few minutes passed in a frenzied blur, her small frame being pulled along as the duo made a mad dash for shelter. Before she knew it she was ushered into an unfamiliar room and the door was slammed shut behind them.

Evelin’s entire body was shaking, so much so that her knees gave out from under her and she hit the ground harshly. She didn’t react to the dull pain that came from her contact with the floor, her eyes screwing tight as she tried to calm herself. Her breathing was practically sporadic, uneven and panicky, as her lungs gulped down oxygen thirstily. Finally after several moments the pattern evened out, her body relaxing as she took nice even breaths.

That’s when she finally opened her eyes, looking around at her surroundings curiously. How is it that this could be the safest place away from those monsters? Surprisingly, even though the room was quite dark Evelin could see almost clearly and so she took the liberty of glancing about. Her gaze was pulled back to Samuel though, drawn back by the feeling of eyes on her, and she caught his gaze. Her lips parted momentarily, planning on mentioning how he was practically staring at her, but she closed them when she remembered she had done the same not long before.

“Are you ok? I think that beast might have gotten a good swipe at your back…” she inquires, scooting closer with a worried look on her face. She would hate it if he was injured badly because of her.

In the darkness, he watched her silhouetted form, staying silent as she collected herself. Taking in deep breaths of his own, he willed his heart rate to normalize while fighting the dull waves of pain that rippled across his back. The tissue started to knit back together, and while it was not a wholly comfortable feeling, it was a relief. A battle with creatures with such low-vibration energies could have been devastating for him. This time, it was barely enough to impede his healing rate. It may take a few days, but it was immensely better than the months of agony that could have resulted, were it not for the young woman lashing out. Silently, he thanked The Creator for gifting his kind with impressive healing abilities.

He was a bit surprised at how quickly the woman calmed. Normally when blissfully ignorant humans had a run-in with the preternatural, they panic- they snap, lash out or simply collapse. She showed little to no signs of a mental break, instead she simply expressed concern over him. He could not help but give a small smile. Though their meeting has not been the best, and they had not been together long, Samuel found himself liking her. At least, he found himself more and more intrigued by her oddities. The smile fell just as quickly as it came, however, as once again he began puzzling over her powers.

After a moment, he cleared his throat and answered. "It is shallow, I will be fine." With that, he pushed himself off the wall, wincing only slightly as he stepped forward and carefully stepping around the dark shape he knew was hers. "I am turning on the light, watch your eyes" He said, waiting a few seconds before moving to the light in the center of the room and tugging on the cord, knowing exactly where it was due to habit and familiarity with the storage room. As the bulb flickered on and light flooded the room, it revealed a treasure-trove of history. Boxes and crates were stacked high, labeled in various languages, from Arabic to Japanese, English to Russian. Shelves lined nearly every wall, filled with ancient artifacts, dusty books and yet more boxes. Rugs, weaponry, sculptures and various objects, great and small, were scattered throughout, stashed away wherever there was space.

"Are you alright?" He asked as he carefully shrugged off his jacket, revealing a white tunic with wide lines of red and gold embroidery at the cuffs and collar, paired with dark brown slacks. As he brought it up for inspection, he frowned. The once-pristine white wool was stained crimson, three long tears rending the fabric from the right shoulder to the waist. Even if it was repairable, the stains would never come out. He had liked this coat.

Evelin let out a relieved sigh, glad her savior would be alright. She would have felt terrible had anything awful befallen him because of her. When the lights turned on, a blinding and harsh change on the woman’s eyes, she screwed her eyes shut only to blink several times to adjust. At least he had warned her of the sudden change, for that she was grateful. Now that the lights were on Evelin could finally get a clear visual on the room she was sitting in. The items around her almost made her gasp. Everything looked like it belonged in a museum, not a little shop, yet everything she saw entranced her wandering eyes. Her body pulled itself off the floor, shakily standing. It seemed that fall, the one she took when she entered, was harder than she thought and her knees ached from the impact. “I’m alive, that’s what matters. A few scrapes and bruises but that’s really it.” She replies, slowly walking over to look at a particular set of dusty tomes. The woman scans the titles, catching a few familiar phrases in what could be Latin, her eyes glistening with interest. Evelin allowed herself to turn, taking the movement slower than usual due to the throbbing in her knees. She continued looking through piles of books, not daring to touch them though. They were definitely old, she didn’t want to damage them. Then a sudden thought hit her like a brick. She had never given Samuel her name. Suddenly she felt like an idiot, a very rude one at that. “I believe I never introduced myself… My name is Evelin Richards. Thank you for saving me, again.” She chimes, having turned to the man looking sheepishly down at her feet. A blush dusted her cheeks, leaving them pink from embarrassment. Then, finally, she glanced upward and realized he had been inspecting his ‘ruined’ coat. Sea-foam eyes took in the damage and when she noticed just how long the scratches were she paled. With wounds like that how could he be ‘fine’? Trying to push that aside though she tried to think of ways to fix it, her grandmother had insisted she pick up sewing so maybe it would be redeemable. “If you want I could try to fix it, the stains would be a little difficult but if I work fast I could probably still get them out. It’s the least I could do.” She chimes, taking a slow step toward Samuel.

His orange eyes flicked over to the young woman as she responded, looking over her small frame. Satisfied that she was telling the truth, he returned to examining the article of clothing in his hands, only vaguely paying attention to her as she wandered around the room a bit. It was the reaction most anyone had when then entered his small store, though she was one of the rare few that got to see the back rooms. Here, aside from all the extra storage, were various objects of great value, monetary and otherwise. Of course, in this particular space there was nothing dangerous, so he did not bother to stop her curiosity. When she spoke again, he lowered the coat and brought his full attention to her. He gave a small smile as she introduced herself, and bowed his head slightly in acknowledgement. However, he took notice to her reaction as she saw the condition of his clothing, subconsciously shifting the coat to hide the garish damage from her view as best he could while she continued to speak. "I would say it is a pleasure to meet you, Miss Richards, however the circumstances have been anything but." He said with another small, though warm smile as he extended his right hand to shake hers. With the cuff of his sleeve out of the way, bold black tattoos could be seen encircling his wrist. A solid band wrapped around the backside, meeting with a simplistic eye that rested over the underside. Strange runic symbols made of various lines and crescent shapes lined the band, above and below. Slightly covering the markings, a deep blue woven bracelet rested on his dark skin. Three ultramarine Turkish Evil Eye beads were braided into it, the center one being larger than the other two. Finishing off the simple ornament were fine silver chain tassels, which dangled off the hanging ends of the knot that held the bracelet on. It seemed that now they were out of harms way, his demeanor changed rapidly. Far from being cold or unfeeling, he was now rather genial and relaxed- charming, even, as he regarded her and the situation. "There is no need to thank me, though I would appreciate your help in attempting to rescue my jacket... It is my favourite." He said, glancing down to the mostly white garment. He then turned slightly, careful to keep his back out of her line of sight as he gestured toward the other door in the room, which lead further into the building. It was propped open by a stone carving of Chinese origin, allowing the light from the storage vault to illuminate the hall beyond. "Please, after you. The stairs to the living quarters are on the left." The narrow flight of stairs was dimly lit by a line of lights hidden under the rail, offering just enough light to see. At the top was a simple multi-coloured tapestry drawn to one side with a bit of hemp cording; the fixture obviously serving as a door. Once they entered, Samuel leaned down to click on a lamp that sat on a small table wedged between the doorframe and the half-wall the separated the living room and kitchen. The stained glass hood of the light reflected blues and greens on the walls while a soft glow lit up the immediate area. Past the threshold, in the subtle lighting, lay a paradoxically simple apartment. It held few furnishings- a low table, ottoman cushions, a few cabinets and bookshelves dotted the living room; however the rich quality of each piece elevated the room. The table was inlaid with mosaic tiles, the cushions were made of beautifully dyed and embroidered fabrics, and the wood of the shelves was stained and carved. Under it all was a large Persian rug depicting the hunt of strange, yet elegant creatures of lore. To the right of the doorway, past a half-wall topped with wood railing, lay an equally simple and beautiful kitchen devoid of any real modern convenience; no microwave, coffee maker or even a toaster lined the counter tops. Instead, ceramic jars, tins and other various containers were tucked up against the walls. On the stove, a kettle and strange, engraved decanter of some sort with a long handle lay ready. Everything was pristine, from the wooden counters to the Moroccan tile walls. Overall, it hardly looked like a western city home; one could almost think they had walked into a sandstone house in the middle east. As she took in the sights, Samuel took what looked to be a short-sleeved, knee-length robe off the coat stand near the door and pulled it on. The light-weight, dark brown material was hemmed much like his shirt, with broad bands of green and gold embroidery giving a flourish to the otherwise simple garment. "Please, make yourself comfortable, I am sure you would like to rest after that adventure." He said, gesturing to the plush cushions that served as chairs. "I am sure you also have many questions. I would be happy to answer them." He walked into the living area and turned on another finely crafted lamp, which illuminated the rest of the room, glinting off the artifacts tucked away on the cabinets and shelves. "Would you care for some water?"

Evelin took his hand in hers; giving it a short and friendly shake before pulling away. Her eyes had noted the swirl of ink etched into his skin, the symbols catching her gaze for a brief moment. There were a few she recognized yet some that were completely foreign to her. The woman looked away quickly though, trying not to seem rude for staring at the intricate design around her savior’s wrist. Her gaze instead focused on the doorway he had gestured her towards. Evelin nodded, smiling faintly at Samuel before beginning to walk in that direction. The young woman crossed the threshold, stopping at the stairs for a moment to assure herself that Samuel was indeed following. Then, completely unburdened by the low lighting she made her way up the steps and past the beautiful tapestry. At first she blinked in the darkness, pausing just inside the room, but a gasp left her lips when light filled the space. This had been nothing Evelin had expected. Instead her gaze was met with an almost exotic apartment, though simple in most nature. Sea-foam colored eyes shift around the room, taking in each piece of furniture as she had the artifacts in the room below. She was so lost in her surroundings she almost forgot her savior was in the room… until he spoke once again. Evelin almost jumped, turning to face Samuel quickly with a smile. “I think I should probably try to remove those stains first… before they set.” She replies. Sure she wanted to sit down but she truly wanted to help him somehow… and if that blood was left alone too much longer it would be almost impossible to remove completely. She’d also have to find some white thread, but that could wait… so could her questions.

Samuel gave a small smile and a slight nod. "Of course." He said before he walked back to pick up the coat, which he had set on the shoe mat near the door. Clearly he was not as worried about the garment as she was anymore, his role of a host having superseded the desire to have it repaired. However, it was more logical to get it dealt with first. "The latrine is this way."

Moving past the living area and kitchen, he lead her through a simple archway and into a short hall. Three dark-stained doors lined the walls, two of them along the length of the hallway and one at the end. As he walked down to the last door, he reached up and clicked on a brass and stained glass wall lamp, warm light filling the area as he did. The carving and etching on each door was now clearly visible, as was the detail on the hanging tapestry that covered much of the wall opposite of them. A plethora of aged colours skillfully displayed what some would recognize as scenes from the stories in the book One Thousand and One Nights.

Turning the brass handle and pushing the door open, he reached in to flick on one of the few light-switches in the apartment, then stepped aside so Evelin could walk into the modestly sized bathroom. Like the rest of the home, it was simple yet ornate, with blue, brown and gold Moroccan tiles lining the lower half of the walls and outside of the tub. The mirror was framed with winding, etched brass that reflected the other brass fixtures within the small room. There were few decorations here, just a vivid green, leafy plant on the counter next to the sink and a floral mosaic set into the wall opposite of the mirror.

Glancing down to the coat again, he unbundled it to look at the darkening stains. "I do not have much in the way of cleaning supplies, but I do have vinegar, if you would like to use it." He said before offering the garment to her for inspection.

Evelin followed the man, glancing about as she walked down the hall. It was only when Samuel turned on the lights and illuminated the entire area that she really saw the elaborate details. Her eyes mostly fell on the tapestry, scanning over the familiar scenes. One Thousand and One Nights had been one of her favorite collection of stories, right up there with the Grimm fairytales. She did not have much time to really look it over, though she wanted to, but after she finished repairing her savior’s coat she planned on doing just that.

Taking her eyes off the tapestry she turned towards the room, the bathroom that Samuel had just opened. She stepped inside, shocked at how simple the room looked in comparison with the rest of the home she had already seen but she still it looked quite nice. Evelin turned to her host, gently taking the light colored garment into her hands. The blood didn’t seem to be completely dry yet but she didn’t want to take any chances. Wool was a difficult material to clean, but she knew a few tricks to get the stains out. If it dried however removing the stain would be tricky, but vinegar would help break up any of the dried blood. Her eyes glanced back up at him. “Actually I might need it… Can you please get some for me?” she asked politely.
