I saw "Doctor Who" and had to pop in. Also, I know of all like, five people who like Doctor Who that consider themselves geeks. It is a rather loose term nowadays.

> Can both of you give me an example of how Doctor Who is not watched by nearly one hundred percent of the geek community. Anime fans, intensive gamer's. Intensive gamers generally focus on gaming, stuff like shows are secondary to them. While Anime fans? Granted this is mainly based off my experiences of the anime club at my college, but anime fans are probably the loosest of the geek/nerd community. As in they obsess over anime and most Japanese like things, but that's it. In ever other aspect you wouldn't really be able to tell they were a nerd or a geek. You would almost always need to bring up anime or pokemon to get them going. And while some may be whovians, a good amount outright avoid such things cause they are creeped out by such 'fandoms' or 'extreme followings' even though they already do so at 10x the extreme with anime... Especially when you consider that whovians mainly limit themselves to say, the show. But anime people tend to obsess over almost anything that's anime... That is A LOT of obsessing to be doing. > The fact that you can be called gay for liking certain geeky things that other geeks don't prove that geeks have their own standards especially now that the community has become huge. You mean the fact that human beings are capable of producing negative meaning words towards people with differing interests? *gasp* Cause you know, that's not something you see in cases such as sport nuts _at all_.

This is probably the part of the thread where we should all disappear before we catch bans. But uh..... yeah that's not gonna happen, is it. Alright. > If you got a problem with me then I would like you to say it and not screw around. ![enter image description here](http://i35.tinypic.com/2naqp39.jpg "enter image title here") Look, the problem is, you've got this comically easy-to-push button based on arbitrary, irrelevant, and mistaken application of clique labels, and you're acting so proud about that fact that it comes across as condescending. Which is funny, because (a) fervently being wrong is just hilarious, but also (b) you're indistinguishable from the people you're pretending to 'rebel' against to everyone but yourself. Which is _ironic_. You know. Like hipsters are.

Like it pisses me off when stuff like Doctor Who make so much money where as great things like comic books barely make money because people are too lazy to look past dumb stereotypes.

> Or politics. Or religion. Or, you know, _everywhere_. I know, but I was specifically connecting it to other hobbies/interests in this case to make a point that it's not just geeks/nerds that can be hostile over differing interests. Hell sport fans have been to spontaneously launch large violent riots over the result of a game... No one has ever done that over a video game or a TV show (Partly why the whole "Gamer's are sexist, misogyntic bastards" critiques anger me so much, because geeks/gamers are overall the one group that's the furthest away from being sexist, violent etc). Sorry for the mini rant there, I know you don't think that way so I don't have to make the argument at you. I just got on a tiny tangent there and just kept rambling on. > You didn't get what I was trying to say with my post, you just agreed with my statement that geeks have standards just like every other kind of community which means that geek rebels can exist Funny, cause if we look at the OP you never said that. But what you _did_ say was that you consider yourself a rebel for liking stuff that other Geek's don't. First by claiming that they all like Doctor Who, which I showed you to be false. In other words, not agreeing with you. Secondly, I addressed how Geeks and Nerds are not just one group with the exact same interests as you. They differ and have varying interest, so to be a 'rebel' geek/nerd is kind of impossible because there's nothing to rebel against. You are a geek/nerd, that is it. And if you honestly are avoiding things you might otherwise like because of perceived popularity? That's not cool, that's not admirable, that's just sad, and screams someone who is punishing themselves for attention. +Comic book geeks are actually more common than you think. I would say go out and look, but I'm assuming you already cut yourself from other comic book fans because they aren't 'rebels' like you and were actually fine liking comics, while at the same time liking other things.

People like what they like, why concern yourself with other people's choices like that? It just never made sense to me, either here or in the broader context of how people generally lead their lives. I mean people complain about Bronies too, but so long as they aren't molesting children who gives a damn how they get their kicks?

My anger is not because people like doctor who, it is that people invest so much money into and treat it like it's greatest science fiction ever and when someone brings up comic books they make stupid excuses for not checking them out by using stereotypes. Where I lived, most people I knew were getting into things because it was what their friends did and what was popular. No one I knew really read comics and when ever I claimed to be a DC fan they would always talk about how lame every DC hero is except Batman and they had never read a single comic before making their judgement, they just listened to what their friends and everyone else told them. That's what pisses me off, people are so closed minded and pretend that they're not by lying to people

Good to hear that you're the judge and jury as to what counts as good works and not. Also, part of having friends is trusting them enough at times to suggest things to you or turn you away from bad things. It's easy to go into detail as why someone dislikes something, and because friends tend to share similliar interests, if one dislikes it then it's fairly likely the other one will too. Honestly I think the only close minded person here is you. Everyone else has their own interests, they live on enjoying them and don't tend to judge others for their interests. While you barge in, basically vilifying anyone who doesn't agree with your tastes.

There's a word for people who prefer their own tastes to yours. "People." Should probably develop a tolerance for them, I hear there's like a whole bunch of 'em out there, ruining the world for the rest of us.

Here's a reason most people don't read comics. BAM! WHOOSH! Holy Flippin Toast Batman. They're old and boring, and a lot of the time hard to pick up midway through a series. I don't watch Dr Who, it's a bit naff, however, I'm a geek. I play turn-based strategy games that are so old that playing them on windows Xp was a stretch. I wouldn't call myself a geek-rebel because you know what: No one gives a shit about labels..

I don't have a problem with you, you're just a teenager (who is upset with life and wants to be different from others). You will get over this 'geek rebel' soon :) You might need some weed to make you happy.

Oh I'm sorry, people stereotyping things is no grounds to get annoyed. I forgot, fine I will let people destroy an art form that I love. I guess society is better when people can continue to spread their lies. Once again I didn't say I had a problem with people's tastes, I had a problem with lies as excuses

He didn't say you had a problem with peopele's tastes either.. It was simply said you're way too quick to judge people. Just because someone likes something that's generally something everyone likes, doesn't make them an idiot. It's called pop culture. Something you need to grab hold of and just deal with. Most people like batman, personally I think he's weak, because he's one of the only DC hero they've heard of. This may be due to not wanting to read comics, or not having the time and money for them. Also due to the films, or even the fact that batman is generally considered better than superman. It shouldn't matter though. Instead of judging you should encourage. Here's an example: Sam: Oh I love Batman. Greg: (sat reading a DC comic) Oh it's not Batman, it's Green Arrow. Sam: who on earth is Green Arrow? He can't be better than Batman. ------ instead of judging, you simply turn to the friend and tell them all about Green Arrow and show them the comic. You don't shout or judge, you show and then if their opinion hasn't changed, it shouldn't matter. Everyone's different. It may be hard to see but it certainly is true
