Idk if my opinion would matter cause i have no idea if i'll be the one to be accepted buuut
I like the character, having a pragmatic person rooted in realism would be a good anchor, I think.

I think that your backstory is going to have to really justify why the White Lotus has hired an amoral assassin to teach their world's Jesus. But in general I like the concept. :)

It teachers moral character through nonexamples.

@ProPro My initial thought was that the White Lotus had to change its play style significantly after the Red Lotus played their hand. In Aangs time, the White Lotus was comprised of a few elite masters. They diluted that in Kora's time and became more like glorified body guards. So when the Red Lotus, a group of a few elite masters, showed up, the White was utterly wiped. My thoughts were that when the Red were forced underground, the White focused its efforts on hunting them down and slipping back into the shadows after them.

Fan wasn't employed by the White Lotus. He was TRAINED by them, and works for them as an operative, responsible for stopping threats to the avatar (like Kora's kidnapping) before they happen. Keeping the Red Lotus scattered and trying to keep them from unifying again.

The idea is that Fan sueded in a mission but was injured to an extent that he could no longer work as an assassin for them, but his knowledge was still useful. Something to prepare the Avatar for the manipulations of the world around her

@Dawnscroll Don't blow the details early, get them in that backstory so we can read it. More fun that way.

this made me laugh but also reminded me of something super interesting: how we actually learn from rolemodels (good or bad) and storytelling. there's this tv producer, sabido, who uses storytelling as a way to push social change--he created a soap opera in tanzania and, using characters as role models to reinforce or discourage certain behavior, he basically changed cultural attitudes around HIV and population growth--he helped dispel HIV/AID myths, increase condom use and approval for family planning methods. thats fucking amazing!! (source: apa.org/monitor/oct02/theory.aspx)

this guy is super interesting if anyone wants to look into it more: blog.ncase.me/miguel-sabido

pretty relevant to anyone who is interested in storytelling, or social change through storytelling :)

@ProPro@Halvtand wait! Come back, I want to discuss role taking philosophies too!

Just jump in dude ;)

My next theory is that the non-bender in entirely open (like ProPro stated) and you're pretty much free to do whatever you want with it. The benders are sort of limited. It's not just which element or subelement you can bend, it kind of limits a lot of things. Certain elements draw upon certain things, breath for fire, balance/rooting for earth... and so this will be an important part of the character. The original cast is also a factor, because they are the source of these "important factors", but you don't want to clone them. So earthbenders need to be forceful, airbenders should be influenced by their evasive nature...
The fighting style is another factor. You can't just get into this and think "I wanna be a bender" because the different styles are so very different. An airbender cannot fight like an earthbender, it wouldn't work.

In short. To want an elemental bender, you kind of need to like the whole concept of that element, the personality, visual style, everything. And depending on what kind of a person you are, you're going to like one or two elements more than the other.
At the same time, there are the non-benders. Completely unclaimed. Sure, there are some factions like the Kyoshi warriors and the pirates, but the aren't very well defined in the show, so you have a certain amount of room to improvise.
That's why there are less people on each element, but more on the non-benders. A better way to compare would be to look at (all) benders vs non-benders, in which case the split is pretty even.

Even though you're my rival in this...
I like it. Fan is a very special character and one that will stand out in a crowd and create plot hooks and nice roleplaying situations. Background will be an important factor though, so don't rush it. :)

@Halvtand Thanks! Though I'm sorta in love with your Kyoshi warrior. She's like one of the Wushu masters you'd see in films, and I bet you'll have a load of fun writing with her different combat styles.

My thoughts for Fan were like... "Aang screwed up so many times, and Korra screwed up with Varrick because they were naive and trusting. I mean, first thing Korra does when she gets to republic city is fish in a local park and share it with the first hobo she meets. Aang willingly trusts the Dai Long and suffers fkr it. Repeat, repeat, repeat.

So in a sense... our characters are opposites. One is a socially akward and naive fighter in her prime and mastery in combat. The other is a more cynical and world weary assassin whose focused on making life a little kinder for the Avatar.

....honestly, I will we could both play just to see these two interact.

That is... Bloody brilliant. A built-in failsafe in a harsh world full of people who might want to kill/capture/do bad stuff to the avatar. Have an assassin right there in her crew. Takes one to know one.
If there is a possibility for us both to play our characters in this I can't even imagine the sort of cruel tricks Fan wwill play on Sang before she (eventually) gets savvy to it. XD

@Halvtand

I understand that benders are limited, but I don't think that you need to latch onto the philosophies of the show. There are always so many ways you can go with elements, the four types of bending can be conceptualized in so many ways. I mean, I made a hard-line, militaristic libertarian of an airbender, which I certainly think fits the concept of airbending, but has no basis in the show.

You'd never hear Aang declaring "Sic semper evello mortem tyrannis", in fact he was fundamentally against the position as a continuation of his airbending upbringing.

@Halvtand Not only that, but also look at things politically. Both Avatars were manipulated so many times its almost not even funny.

I'll fully allow Aang's group to be written off, since they comprised of a child frozen in ice for 100 years, two teens from the frozen boondocks in the south, and a blind girl. They're allowed to be ignorant. . . but still.

Korra was TRAINED by the White Lotus in what only seemed to be bending, considering she has the finesse personality of a brick through the window. She butted heads with the Chief of Police, was manipulated by Tarrlok, was manipulated so blindly by her Uncle, further manipulation by Varrick, further further manipulation by the Earth Queen, Zaheer. . .

Korra: Ha! Forget it! There's no way I'm rejoining your vanity project.
Tarrlok: That is unfortunate to hear but I'm sure you'll come to your senses as you have in the past.
Korra: Don't hold your breath, bub. You know, Tenzin's been right about you all along. You played me, you played Beifong and now you're playing the new Chief too. Well, I got news for you. You need me, but I don't need you. I'm the Avatar.
Tarrlok: You're not, in fact, the Avatar. You are merely a half-baked Avatar in training, which reminds me, how is your airbending going? Made any significant progress with that? I didn't think so. If you will not be part of my task force, then you had best stay out of my way.

Like, omg, did nobody teach the Avatar to MAYBE read a room? Not every battle is won with fire blasts and flying boulders.

Nobody thought of telling her the Red Lotus existed, despite the kidnapping attempt. Nobody thought of telling her the political conflict within her own family. Nobody gave her the full and fleshed out history of her predecessor... like, a Blood Bender NOT using the full moon? Kinda an important detail. Nobody bothered to put HER life above all others, and instead they flung a teenager into world-ending scenarios over and over because SHE was the Avatar and not them. And as a result, they almost lost the Avatar spirit for good.

I love Korra. I love how she's brash, hard headed, punch first ask questions later kinda girl. I wouldn't have wanted her to be anything else. But I can only look at the White Lotus and go "Really? THIS is the Avatar you guys produced?"

I imagine that whatever Avatar Fan has is going to make his life HELL as he tries to keep things on the level. And I wouldn't want that any other way.
