The Tide of the Apocalypse Will Return

The apocalypse has come and gone once before, about two thousand years ago. No one disputes that. The remnants left behind were enough to destroy the doubt of disbelievers. There were zones of space that were designated off-limits due to Scourge presence, and any fools who had dared to disapprove such theories either came back empty-handed or not at all. Some idiot running a live feed put an end to things when both he and his ship were canabalised for parts, live on-air. The only folks daring to go in after that went armed to the teeth.

Some seem to be convinced that the apocalypse will return, but most are short on evidence. Theories vary as to why or how. Whatever the case, life goes on. People of worlds need feeding, pirates in various sectors need shooting, and something stirs from deep within the no-go zone. Old records indicate there used to be a people there, in what was called the badlands, but it would seem they'd been wiped out in the disaster.

Scourge activity has been on the rise, in recent times, especially with hostile ships coming out from the badlands. Some seem to think that the Scourge have gotten bored, but the monsters need to be dealt with. The military has a response on the way, but the Scourge are a fierce foe.

Brief History

The apocalypse that came, millennia ago, was a horrendous force. Grotesque and with an eye for only efficiency, horrifying abominations of flesh melded with machine washed over the galaxy. The Terran Solidarity was hit hardest, with the scattered remnants of the once mighty nation coalescing at the edges of their now infested space. Though the Scourge disappeared mysteriously at the end of the Black Year, scattered forces remained. Those scattered, lingering horrors either spread their infestation or were wiped out over the next millennia, creating hotspots of hostile activity.

Two millenia have passed. Nearly all civilization has suffered from heavy losses across the board, with production capabilities and technical prowess set back hundreds, in some cases thousands of years, though often with the curious oddity of having technology beyond their capabilities. It is not difficult to find dynasties, kingdoms, and religions formed around the possession of such technologies and the advantage it would offer.

Spiritualist religions have become particularly prominent, as hauntings, or rumors of hauntings, have become prominent in recent times. Theorists with the knowledge to do so tend to point to the surplus of death from the Black Year as the cause, and the industry surrounding the supernatural - involving things like mediums, psychics, and ghost hunters - has exploded with activity.

Archaeologists inspecting planetside ruins have found strange, new crystal deposits among the ruins. Often, these locations were determined to be laid to ruin by the Scourge, but not always. These crystals deposits ended up being called Luminium, after an old currency that hasn't been seen in a long time that behaved much the same. The crystals can be fed to a reactor, though nobody ever said anything about retrieving the crystal once spent, which can be done. It's still an exotic material, and not many are sure what can be done with it. But it looks pretty, it's useful as reactor fuel, and it's stable, so it sells well.

State of Technology and Politics

Much of what had been developed before the fall has been lost. Many civilizations were brought back to a pre-space state, and had to work their way back to the stars. The race back to space was accelerated by the existence of space-age technology, and as the nations of old reclaimed their seat within the galactic community, new powers also arose from the fractured remains of old.

Nations are just recently developed the capability to make space ships that can even touch the ships of old. Until now, old ships had been vital platforms from which to operate in deep space. New ships are once again capable of independent deep space operation, but their capabilities pale in comparison to what once was.

Technology locked behind technology; ancient and run-down, yet powerful and incredibly advanced machines; primitive civilization with the means and cultural understanding to traverse space. These are some of the hallmarks of the time.

Political Cosmoscape

Previously powerful empires, all but laid to ruin by the apocalypse, have risen again from their shattered remains to put their pieces back together. Some of those pieces, however, have gained a life of their own. Peoples that have been taking care of themselves in the wake of the devastation think of themselves as independent, and seek to remain so. The remains of humanity have eeked out an existence on the fringes of livable space, always under threat from the Scourge and pirates that neighbor them.

The Scourge. Horrendous abominations of flesh, metal and mineral, it absorbs all in order to make the most efficient machine possible. Impossibly ugly, but indeed incredibly efficient, the Scourge ravaged the civilized universe before vanishing, almost entirely and all at once. This was not before it had wrought unprecedented destruction, especially to the Terran Empire. For all accounts, it had been outright destroyed, leaving any humans still alive without an ancestral homeworld, or an empire of their own kind.

Though most of the Scourge has gone, remnants remain. Incapable of production on any meaningful scale, Scourge forces only grow when fed, doubling the importance of keeping people away from known Scourge zones. Not much is known about the Scourge, beyond its horrifying nature. Some fools try to use it for prosthetics, seeking the ridiculous power of the hideous force, but such ideas inevitably turn against them.

Spirits and ghosts have begun to make their way through the rumor mills once more, and with a prevalence that cannot be overlooked. Ancient legends find their place in the conversations at bars, some poor soul claiming his hauler got eaten by a dragon come from the ground or some such, or to have seen a ghost ship, or have been swarmed by a clot of wraiths on the trade lane and managed to escape in a pod. Many stories, maybe even some true ones.

In recent years, deposits of a peculiar, prospectors began to discover deposits of a previously undiscovered mineral on certain planets. Such planets typically teemed with life, and lacked heavy urban development. The deposits would be found in the forest or deep in a mushroom grove of many glowing colors, itself within a cave. At the floor of an ocean world, and some gas giants have even begun to give strange readings.

The mineral seems to be some kind of crystallized energy, though scientists are still trying to figure out how to work with it.

I am interested, would give me an opportunity to use a quasi-nation of space pirates I've been tinkering with.

The basic gist of them is that they were a failed human colony that suffered a drastic shift in planetary environment with the arrival of an alien crystal, got abandoned by whatever human empire/faction claimed them, and as a result of losing most of it's population and any outside help they resorted to piracy to survive. The alien crystal terraformed the planet into a (almost) barren hellscape as it replicated itself and grew from the ground like plants, poisoning and consuming any life except those who managed to adapt/mutate to survive from the radiation. Those that survived, emerged from the crisis forever changed, adapted to this new alien environment but no longer able to tolerate the environments they once enjoyed.

I think they would serve well as a sort of neutral wild card. sometimes helpful sometimes harmful and sometimes harmful to themselves as pirates are not always the most united of folk, though they are wise enough to recognize a threat to everyone is not one to be taken lightly, nor alone. @CitrusArms I can give more specific details if you are interested.

One scavenger and one, ah, undecided. Waiting for more juicy lore? Well, you shall have it.

The after effects of the apocalypse on galactic civilization have been far-reaching. Such wide-spread destruction and death set manufacturing and engineering back centuries in some places, introducing an era of technological decay. Some planets have enough old ruins that entire industries develop around salvage and repair, lacking the knowledge or technology themselves to reproduce the things they can find. Old space ships, from before the Black Year, are extremely valuable, and powerful, supposing the systems are in good repair.

Some planets have been sent back to pre-space eras, which spelt the doom of some settlements without sufficient agricultural or ranching infrastructure, or the natural resources to support a population. These graveyard worlds have been giving curious energy readings, but superstition keeps folks away, those stories if vengeful spirit and such that have been cropping up recently.

Edit: Oh, hello.

@Lurking Shadow Sounds pretty interesting, but there's a few problems some things I've yet to reveal have with that. Specifically the crystal. I already have a space crystal I'm going to introduce, and perhaps we can discuss your crystal in some more detail, but might I suggest a chunk of Scourge tech, or an entire crashed ship, perhaps? Of course, that introduces its own problems, but that may also give us some interesting options in the future.

Oh, wait, I think I did mention it. Haha, I threw myself off because I described it as a mineral.

I'm not saying no immediately, but we'll talk about it. On that note, I'll describe my space crystal a little more.

Dubbed Luminium for it's considerable, slightly blue glow, one kilogram of this crystal gives off a constant, low energy signal, and results in high yield in a starship's reactor. It is not radioactive, and instead of experiencing a half-life, the crystal tends to grow after harvest. Not much has been discovered about the crystal's properties beyond it's use as fuel, though it doesn't seem to grow much in the barren, dead places it has been found.

@CitrusArmsOh yeah, spaced a bit and forgot about your crystal. I based the crystal, which in my case I settled on naming it Phircyn, pretty heavily on Tiberium from Command & Conquer to give the basis of how it functions.

It is capable of replicating itself on a molecular level by bombarding foreign elements with radiation until they form a proton lattice with the right qualities to become more Phircyn. Visually this can be seen as Crystals, typically green, growing out of cracks/fissures in the ground or over things such as rocks or buildings. This carries over to organisms as well, growing inside, out of, or over any living thing that has direct contact with any amount of Phircyn long enough for the process to occur. In most cases (~96%) this is fatal within a few days as the victim as their body slowly crystalized. In some cases, radiation from Phircyn encourages a beneficial mutation in the host as their body is altered genetically to allow a beneficial relationship with Phircyn rather than be consumed by it. These individuals do not merely survive but thrive, able to sustain themselves off of the radiation of Phircyn as well as being invigorated in the presence of it. However they typically will not be able to survive long if cut off from Phircyn.

While it is extremely hazardous, it has found uses as an energy source, an easy way to harvest metals/minerals when refined since it leeches these materials when it 'grows', and weaponry. Though because of the threat it poses to those not yet assimilated to the crystal, it is a very risky game to play as failure to properly contain it can doom an entire planet.

I am willing to make some concessions but at the core the space pirates are defined by something terraforming their planet from a hospitable colony to a planet void of life and with turbulent weather as well as adapting to this force, mutating into something no longer Human. If the crystal needs changing, whatever it changes to needs to still satisfy this background or I'll need to think of something else.

I suppose I'm just after some particular detail. What is it made of, how does it work, that kinda thing. We can discuss this over PM or discord. Maybe I'll put a server together, too.

I figured that the crystal was the source of the supernatural bullshittery going on. If I should scrap that from the character, let me know.

@WolfHorns mmm. Hmmm. Yes, I see... Well, they are related, certainly. I should be able to fit your character into the narrative, although we might need to hammer out a couple things. I'll hit you up with a narrative and see what you think.

Nice ship. @HEAVY METAL

@Lurking Shadow That's certainly something a chunk of Scourge could do. A strong enough mind and spirit might even be able to control it for a while. I'm thinking about, maybe, Scourge-corrupted Luminium. I'll need to think about the implications of that.

Edit: oh, I got a message
