IDENTITY
Garfield Mark Logan

ALIGNMENT
Neutral Good

ORIGIN & BACKSTORY
The son of paleontologist Mark Logan and biologist Marie Logan, "Gar" grew up in all corners of the world. After the death of his father in a boating accident, Marie Logan moved the family to a permanent home operating a wildlife sanctuary in the Republic of Qurac. At the age of eight, Gar contracted the Sakutia virus. Due to the isolation of the wildlife sanctuary and the rapid deterioration of Gar's condition, his mother was forced to treat him using an experimental vaccine developed for treating the virus in West African green monkeys. Though Gar made a full recovery from the illness, his body reacted to the vaccine.

In light of the aggressive, sometimes violent reactions, Marie Logan moved Gar to a pediatrics hospital in the United States. Tests revealed that Gar's genetic structure had undergone a mutation of unstable molecules within the rNA of his cells, thus allowing him to alter his shape and form. In particular, Gar was successful in changing shape and form into animals with which he was familiar. When treatments were unsuccessful in reversing the metabolic changes, Marie Logan again returned to her work in animal conversation with Gar in tow.

Though an American citizen by birth, Gar attended elementary school in Qurac, middle school in Brazil, and completed the equivalent of a high school education in the Congo. As a result, he speaks three languages fluently (English, Portuguese, and French), in addition to having some conversational familiarity with Arabic, Urdu, Swahili, and Lingana. At his mother's insistence, Gar applied to, and was accepted at, Metropolis University for Conversation Biology. The transition from the outback to the big city was not an easy transition for Gar, on top of which the first year of college added a great deal of personal stress.

Deciding to take a semester off, Gar began applying for jobs in Metropolis in order to achieve greater financial independence, but found that he had difficulty in getting hired due to his green color. Seeing an advertisement for a student internship at a federal office in Metropolis, Gar applied as part of his "ask a hundred, get ninety-nine rejections" strategy... and wound up being hired when the interview revealed his multi-lingual fluency and experience in the third world.

"Kneel before Zod!"

IDENTITY
Lor-Zod // Superboy

ALIGNMENT
Chaotic Neutral

ORIGIN & BACKSTORY
Lor-Zod is the son of Kryptonian General Dru-Zod and his lieutenant, Ursa. He was born inside of the alternate dimension of the Phantom Zone and raised aboard a Kryptonian interstellar warship left adrift in the wake of Krypton's destruction. Once New Krypton was established, Lor-Zod was supposed to be his father's heir and legacy in leading the future of the Kryptonian race.

// APRIL-MAY 2016 //
It was with that goal of creating this Utopia that General Zod dispatched probes throughout the galaxy in order to search for fertile land on which to sow the seeds of this ideal Krypton. Targeting Earth, the planet on which the son of Jor-El had concealed himself, the warship exited the Phantom Zone in order to terraform the Earth into Zod's vision of a New Krypton.

Because he had been born in the Phantom Zone, and thus did not possess a physical body, Lor-Zod had difficulty in manifesting on the material plane. The boy was placed in stasis within a Kryptonian matrix in order to assist in the formation and development of his actual body. One of the Kryptonian puppies that had been born in the Phantom Zone was placed in a matrix as well, so that the boy would have something to play with once he had manifested his physical form. As the battle for Earth turned against the Kryptonians, the ship carrying the matrix became damaged. The pod containing both the boy and the dog were ejected when automatic safety protocols were triggered, putting the object in orbit of the planet Earth.

After the Kryptonian threat to Earth had ended, the governments of the world turned their attention to the debris in space. When researchers discovered a substantial size of debris floating in Earth orbit, scientists began contemplating it's recovery for study. Dr. Reed Richards, together with a team of three other individuals, flew an experimental orbiter design to retrieve the object. During the mission, the shuttle crew was exposed to a barrage of cosmic radiation due to unusual solar activity taking place.

While medical teams tended to the Richards expedition, the Kryptonian pod was moved to the Pike Island Research Institute for further study.

SUPPORTING CAST
Krypto the Superdog
Lor-Zod's companion, a canine-like species native to the Kryptonian homeworld. While non-sapient, Krypto exhibits many of the same abilities as Kryptonians when in the presence of yellow sun radiation.

Adam Grant
The son of media mogul Victor Morgan and tabloid journalist Cat Grant, Adam is a student at Metropolis' Benedict Arnold Elementary School. He is Superman's self-proclaimed biggest fan.

Cat Grant
Gossip columnist and entertainment reporter for the Daily Planet.

Commander Dabney Donovan, MD, Ph.D.
A U.S. Navy flight surgeon and NASA astronaut, Dr. Donovan specializes in the area of space medicine out of the Pike Island Research Institute in Metropolis. He is the medical authority in charge of Project SUPERBOY.

Captain Micah Flint
An Air Force test pilot and NASA astronaut assigned to the Pike Island Research Institute as part of Project OPEN DOOR, the development of the top secret Excalibur space plane.

ROGUE’S GALLERY
Dr. Albert Michaels, MD, Ph.D. (Atomic Skull I)
The predecessor to Dabney Donovan at the Pike Island Research Institute, Dr. Michaels was a genuinely unfriendly administrator who suffered from a rare disorder of the nervous system. An experimental treatment, devised by Donovan, resulted in violent seizures. Forced to step down as administrator, Michaels was offered help by LexCorps Laboratory Science Division, where they used radium to harness the violent electrical impulses in his brain. Now, Michaels runs a division of Project C.A.D.M.U.S. responsible for researching the Kryptonian genome under the guise of being LexCorps' philantrophic contributing toward the Human Genome Project

Clone 23 (Bentley Whittman)
A juvenile clone of a minor criminal, created by Michaels as part of C.A.D.M.U.S.' human genome project. Michaels' thinks of him more as property or a specimen than as a human being, but acknowledges that the thing's intellect does make him at least somewhat useful. Often used as a test pilot for a variety of different technologies C.A.D.M.U.S. is developing, including mind control helmets, power gloves, and anti-gravity mobility devices.

Abuse (Colin Wilkes)
An orphan abducted by C.A.D.M.U.S. researchers from the town of Bludhaven. Combining existing Venom-formula research with rNA and synthetic hormones reverse engineered from Kryptonian bodily fluids, C.A.D.M.U.S. uses Colin as a lab rat to see what the potential growth in human attributes might be from genetic engineering using the Kryptonian genome.

Psi-Phon
A spy sent by Ronan the Accuser to assess Earth's ability to resist a Kree invasion, Psi-Phon is a child-sized alien closely resembling The Greys. He can telepathically suppress a superbeing's abilities.

Dreadnaught
A large, beastial alien who often works in concert with Psi-Phon. He can mimick the powers of other superbeings.

Mumbo
A magician who appears able to perform magic with the use of his top hat and cane.

LOCATIONS
Pike Island Research Institute (Metropolis)
A U.S. Government research institute operated by NASA with contracts supported through Wayne Enterprises, Stark Industries, Star Labs, and LexCorps, this human space flight support laboratory was re-purposed overnight to house and study a juvenile Kryptonian left behind after the Superman incident in April 2016.

Benedict Arnold Elementary School (Metropolis)
An elementary school in Metropolis, providing public education for grades Kindergarten through 5th Grade. Their mascot is the Boot.

The International Space Station (Low Earth Orbit)

NOTES
• Lor-Zod is a full-blood Kryptonian, possessing all the natural abilities of Superman when exposed to yellow sun radiation. The same is true when exposed to Kryptonite or red sun radiation.

• Because Lor-Zod's body isn't fully developed, he can only store a finite amount of energy. As such, his abilities fade over time as his access to solar radiation is reduced or diminished.

STORY HOOKS AND HALF-ASSED PLOTS
The De-Construction of Falling Stars
The pod is opened and the matrix containing Lor-Zod and Krypto are discovered. Dabney Donovan is successful in accessing Lor-Zod's matrix, completing the process of the boy manifesting in the physical realm. One-shot adventures, focused on slice-of-life stuff, follow.

Only Human
Psi-Phon and Dreadnaught arrive on Earth and Lor-Zod is powerless. If the Boy of Steel is going to stop them, he'll have to figure out how to fight as a human.

Damian al Ghul (Clone) // "Six" // Spawn

ALIGNMENT
Chaotic Good

ORIGIN & BACKSTORY
The sixth in a series of clones devised from the embryo containing the child of Talia al Ghul and Bruce Wayne, intended for use in genetic experiments to determine the modifications and training necessary to develop the real Damian into the League's ideal of a perfect being -- the future Demon's Head. Secretly, Ra's al Ghul also intended that the final clone might be of use to him in case bodily transference were necessary to prolong his life further. Though Talia might have had ideas for Damian to one day replace her father, Ra's shared no such sentiments. Accelerated growth allowed scientists to study the anticipated development of the developing embryo, and make any recommended genetic changes in utero based on observation. When no longer required or when displaying undesirable qualities, the clone would be terminated and a new replacement requisitioned from the current genetic model. The replacement was then age accelerated and implanted with artificial memories in order to step into the training program where its predecessor had failed.

MY SO CALLED LIFE | SEPTEMBER 2013-MARCH 2014
He lived only six months, believing it to have been ten years.

Replacing the fifth clone of Damian al Ghul-Wayne, Six was 'born' at the level of physical and psychological growth commensurate to a nine-and-a-half years old child. Implanted with artificial memories, the clone resumed the physical and mental conditioning program where his predecessor had left off. He was wielded as a weapon and a tool by Mother, the only name by which he knew the woman Talia al Ghul. In return, she was stern and direct in her tasking of him, admonishing each mistake and tolerating no failure.

Six was brought to Gotham City as a sniper on an assignment of low enough priority as to suit being utilized as a training operation. The League had applied pressure to renown scientist Umataro Tenma to provide certain technology to the League. When he refused, it was decided that a message needed to be sent. Dr. Tenma's wife had died in childbirth, but their son had survived and was Tenma's only family. While Tenma had the child with him in Gotham, the League intended to murder the boy.

Except that Six refused the order, and begged Mother to reconsider. Disgusted by the display of weakness, Talia turned the gun on the likeness of her own son, shooting him through the throat with a single shot.

The death was presumed to be gang related. The body was never identified or claimed, and then buried in a municipal cemetery outside of Gotham.

HELL AND BACK AGAIN | MARCH 2016
He descended into Hell.

It might have been the third day. It might have been the day after tomorrow. Time has no meaning here.

The thing about Hell is that it isn't a single place, or even a single realm. Like Dante's Inferno, it exists on a multitude of levels, each controlled by its own group of lords, devils, demons, or other primordial entities whose mere existence defies the mortal imagination. As one such creature, the Devil Malebolgia had challenged the other so-called Princes of Hell by creating creatures, known as Hellspawns, composed of souls infused with necroplasm to serve as his own personal army against both heaven and hell. Hela and Mephisto likewise had their own champions, in the form of the Dsir and the Ghost Rider respectively. Klarion, one of the Lords of Chaos, the primordial creatures of eld, decided to do likewise. Whether to legitimately challenge the Princes of Hell for his own ends, or merely to feed the chaos and instability in Hell... only Klarion could have said what his exact motivations were.

Brokering a deal with the Devil Mammon, insinuating some kind of alliance between the Lords of Chaos and the Lord of Greed and Avarice. Mammon supplied the necroplasm from the Malebolge, Klarion supplied the power to merge it with a human soul. But this deal would require a host.

To find a suitable soul, Klarion searched along the Phlegethon, the river of blood. Along the shores of Purgatory, he found the most unlikely of souls in the form of a blood-stained child. Taking the boy from out Purgatory and into the Garden of Avarice, Klarion skillfully befriended and beguiled the young and confused soul until he'd discovered what had led to his death.

Six made a deal with Klarion, one which allowed him power with which to go back and protect Toby Tenma, the child that Talia al Ghul had sent Six to kill. A pact made, the bargain struck, Klarion completed the ritual -- bonding Six and C'thu -- and sent the newly forged Hellspawn back to the mortal realm.

Klarion did fulfill his word. Each letter, in point of fact. He gave Six power with which to protect the boy, and sent him back to Earth so that he might accomplish that goal. However, Klarion sent Six back to Earth by way of the River Lethe, which causes people to forget their previous lives. As a result, Six returned with no memories of who he was or why he was there.

SUPPORTING CAST
Hot Stuff the Little Devil
Both the Clown and Cogliosto to Six's Simmons, Hot Stuff is a child-like devil who ostensibly works for either Mammon or Klarion, but like so many agents of Hell appears to have either his own agenda or else is merely an agent of anarchy.

Casper McFadden (Casper the Friendly Ghost)
The disembodied spirit of a young British boy who lived in the American Colonies and died prior to the War for Independence, he often serves as the voice of Six's conscience.

Wendy Markowski (Wendy the Good Witch)
The adopted, orphan daughter of the Three Witches (Thelma, Velma, and Zelma), Wendy is a young witch who struggles to perform the dark arts but has an innate talent for white magic.

Dr. Shondra Kinsolving, MD
A physician operating a free clinic inside Gotham's so-called Crime Alley.

Lori Zechlin (Black Alice)
A teenage student at the Gotham Academy, with a chip on her shoulder and a personal vendetta in the War on Drugs. She has the ability to 'borrow' powers from nearby magical creatures, including Hellspawns or Angels.

Colin Wilkes (Abuse)
A young orphan in the care of St. Eustace's Home for Boys.

ROGUE’S GALLERY
Klarion (bum bum bum) the Witch Boy
The architect behind Six's transformation into a Hellspawn, and the one who wields final control or authority over the contract binding C'thu and Six together. He may, or may not, be supporting Mammon's claim to all of Hell in the face of both Mephisto and Malebolgia's challenges.

The Devil Mammon
The Lord of Greed and Avarice, ruler of the Fourth Sphere of Hell. He intends to use Six, and others like him, for an army that will depose all other devils and install him as the one ruler of Hell. He also believes that he is manipulating Klarion, and will replace him to become more than just ruler of Hell... but a Lord of Chaos as well.

Victor Zsasz
A serial murderer and child killer.

Doctor Fate (Nabu)
A Lord of Order, Doctor Fate has long been that which kept Klarion in check. He sees Six as an agent of Chaos, period.

Zauriel
An angel sent to Earth. Like the Lords of Order, he sees Six as a threat to all mankind.

Asmodel
One of the fallen angels, who refused to serve in Heaven and now works to reign in Hell and Earth.

Solomon Grundy
A zombie from the Swamps of Gotham.

Imhotep
An immortal priest of Ancient Egypt, mummified alive for his crimes against the Pharaoh and condemned in the afterlife.

LOCATIONS
Halyard Street Cemetery (Bludhaven)
A municipal cemetery that ran out of funding a year ago. Six's grave, marked only as 'A Boy' is located here. Six lives in the condemned ruins of the former caretaker house.

St. Bernadine's Church (Bludhaven)
A Catholic church in Bludhaven, which operates a soup kitchen and food pantry for the homeless.

Park Row Clinic (Gotham City)
A free medical clinic located inside of 'Crime Alley' in Gotham.

Avarice (Fourth Sphere of Hell)
The realm of Mammon, currently used by Klarion the Witch Boy as a base of operations for the Lords of Chaos.

Malebolge (Eighth Sphere of Hell)
The realm of Malebolgia, which contains the river of necroplasm used to empower the Hellspawns.

NOTES
• As an entity composed of roughly 9,000 units of necroplasm, Six is able to manipulate both tangible and intangible effects in the mortal realm as well as in Hell. He is effectively powerless, and mortal, when in the Heavenly realm.

• As necroplasm is denser than human bone or tissue, Six weighs several hundred pounds more than he otherwise appears, making his body more durable than that of an ordinary mortal. This also contributes to his strength to a degree.

• Six's symbiote is known as K-9 C'thu.

• Six gets around in a 1974 Ford Pinto, which he calls the Red Bird.

• Because of the manner of his death and resurrection, Six has a permanent wound in the form of a bullet entry and exit wound at the base and back of his neck.

STORY HOOKS AND HALF-ASSED PLOTS
If God Will Send His Angels
Six returns, with no memories, and winds up involved in the investigation of serial child murders while trying to remember why he is here.

Mordred

[ main theme ] [ battle theme ]

Original World: Prydain, the world of Disney's The Black Cauldron, based on The Chronicles of Prydain.

Apparent Age: 12-13

Description: A "tweenage" boy from a world not unlike the Welsh Highlands, Mordred has pale skin, a shock of raven dark haira and green eyes that seem to glow with an baleful, eldritch light that suggests his Cauldron-Born origins. He wears dark clothing, with a metal pauldron on the left shoulder. Though his slight build would suggest a less capable fighter or guile hero, this boy prefers a brawl and punches well above his weight when using his Dark Arts ability to channel his inner darkness. Hailing from a pre-industrial society, Mordred is unfamiliar with technology and struggles to comprehend some aspects of worlds that are more technologically advanced or futuristic. In terms of the Final Fantasy franchise, Mordred is an example of a Dark Knight.

"How can I be your friend if I don't even know who I am?"

Personality: Acerbic, cold, and unquestionably aggressive, Mordred pitches himself wholly into the fight, as if eager to throw his life away. Oddly, this seeming disregard for himself is matched only by his apparent desire to protect others. Mordred listens far more than he speaks, though his rare comments are typically jerkass enough that few seek out conversation with him -- which seems to suit boy fine. In truth, Mordred's inability to reconcile with his own identity prompts him to keep others at arm's length, not desiring to be fake or build friendships on the lie of whoever he is (or isn't).

"Do you ever hear your name and... not recognize it? Like they're talking about someone else."

Important Memories:
 • "I've been having these strange thoughts lately. Like, is any of this real? Or not? I close my eyes and I'm staring into a mirror. Only the face looking back isn't mine. But, somehow, I think that is was?"
 • "I'm looking for someone. Or, I was looking for someone. Or... was it a pig? That doesn't make any sense..."
 • "In dreams, I see a fae and a bard. They smile like... like we were friends. Or they were friends with the other me. The other me? This isn't making sense."
 • "Sometimes I close my eyes and I see the bard. She's... pretty. I try to call out to her, but I don't know her name."
 • "I think I remember something. Or, was it just another dream? There was a battle. I'm fighting... the Horned King? I don't think this ends well for me."

"I don't know who I was, or if I was anyone at all. It's like a me that I only see in a dream.
And, maybe, if I pretend that I'm him long enough... I'll become him."

Far-off Memories: Each of these correspond and expand on the quotations above of what Mordred only vaguely recalls.
 • Mordred was Glyndwr, son of Elwyn, and hails from a hamlet known as Caer Maelog.
 • Taran Pig-Keeper disappeared shortly before the Horned King re-emerged. Glyndwr set out on a quest to find Taran in the hopes that he could stop the black cauldron once more.
 • Glyndwr was joined on his quest by a fairy named Emrys (Merlin analog) and a young bard named Siobhan. As the Horned King and his army of Heartless spread darkness across Prydain, the trio decided to abandon the search for Taran and instead attempt to destroy the source of the Horned King's power (the black cauldron).
 • Glyndwr had a crush on Siobhan.
 • The trio failed against the Horned King, with Glyndwr's heart being consumed by the black cauldron.

Backstory: Mordred's earliest memory is waking to find himself in the gutter of Traverse Town. No memory of who he was, where he came from, or how he got there. The assumption most people had of him was that he was an orphan whose world had been consumed by darkness. He avoided people and people mostly avoided him. He might have stayed in obscurity if not for the appearance of Heartless, which the boy defeated by a startling display of darkness, leading to people calling him 'Mordred' in reference to a black knight. The Traverse Town incident brought the to the attention of the Cynics, who correctly deduced his being a Nobody. Within the Organization, Mordred acts as a heavy -- providing forceful backup for missions and eagerly pitching himself against Heartless. Seemingly content to go from mission to mission, avoiding dreams or recollection by minimizing downtime and volunteer for the next opportunity to go off-world.

------
Battle Profile

Attack: 7

Defense: 4

Magic: 1

Tech: 0

Command: 0

Light: 0

Darkness: 6
--

Special Weapon: Shadowbringer, a large zweihander-style sword that is comically overlarge against Mordred's small frame. Forged of black steel, shadows and dark energies seem to infuse the weapon, causing it to flicker with violet and red light.

Special Abilities:
 • Dark Arts: The source of the boy's unnatural resolve. By attuning to the darkness both within him and around him, Mordred can transcend the limits of his child body, increasing his physical abilities..
 • Edge of Darkness: Mordred's Limit Break, infusing his sword with dark energies to unleash a flood of darkness on his opponent.
 • Dark Corridor: Opens a portal to another location the user is familiar with. It takes some time to manifest - enough that this technique is ineffective in battle. Mortals cannot pass through a dark corridor more than once a day without falling ill.

Character You're Applying For
Garth of Shayeris

Powers And Abilities
Garth is a pure blood Atlantean, imparting him a physiology adapted to the crushing pressures, low light, and freezing temperatures of the deep ocean. Under water, Garth can swim at speeds in excess of 90 miles per hour (78 knots) and withstand the ocean pressure at 3,600 feet (approx. 109 bar, 1,602psi, 10,900kPa). These physiological adaptations result in him having physical strength and stamina beyond baseline human limits. Garth breathes oxygen under water by means of specialized pores in his skin and does not suffer any toxic effect from oxygen under high pressure. Like all pure-blood Atlanteans, Garth is limited in his ability to operate on the land before he needs to immerse himself in water. The time period between intervals varies depending on the ambient humidity in the air.

Like all Atlanteans, Garth can communicate both telepathically and empathically, both with people as well as marine life. He has the rare ability to wield Atlantean magic, giving him the potential to control currents, manipulate the elements, or even teleport across dimensions... if he ever learns to control it, that is.

Origin And Backstory
Garth is the son of Thar, King of Idyls -- a political off-shoot of Atlanteans who rejected the ways of Poseidon and sought a pacifist utopia inside of the Hidden Valley, where they founded the underwater city of Shayeris approximately 4,000 years ago. His mother is Berra, Queen of the Idylists. Garth's ability to use Atlantean magic was inherited from his father, who is regarded as the Idylist's second most powerful sorcerer. The title of most powerful was held by Thar's elder brother, who held the original claim to the throne of the Idylist Kingdom. Then Crown Prince Slizzath was rejected for his study of the forbidden arts of necromancy, resulting in his banishment for dabbling in the black arts. Eventually, Slizzath raised an undead army and sought to take the throne of Shayeris, but was defeated by Thar and Aquaman.

In order to maintain peace between Atlantis and the Idylists, Garth was placed in the custody of the Atlanteans as part of on-going diplomatic negotiations between the two undersea kingdoms -- not the least of which is a proposed betrothal between Garth of Shayeris and Tula of Atlantis in order to unite the kingdoms, a proposal with strong opposition on both sides of the 4,000 year political and cultural divide between the Poseidonis and the Idylists.

As he has grown older, Garth has started to gravitate toward the only other outsider in all Atlantis, the half-blood known as the hero Aquaman. Self-described as Aquaman's greatest fan, Garth would follow the adventures and escapades of his idealized idol, which had the inadvertent coincidence of putting Garth in the right place at the right time to rescue his hero. Afterward, the two began to interact and travel together more often, resulting in Garth earning the moniker Aqualad by those who saw the boy graduate from groupie to sidekick status.

As Aqualad, Garth met fellow sidekick Beast Boy (Garfield Logan) when the Doom Patrol came to Atlantis on a mission. The experience introduced Garth to the concept of life on the surface of the Earth, something he'd only heard of through the accounts of Arthur Curry (which seemed more like flights of fantasy).

Summary of Version Differences
The origin of Garth has been re-worked to better distinguish him from Aquaman. Instead of being exposed/abandoned as an infant, Garth is a ward of Atlantis and the prince of Shayeris. Otherwise, it's exactly what it says on the tin.

OLD MAN GRAYSON

R I C H A R D G R A Y S O N T O Y B O Y B L U D H A V E N B A T - F A M I L Y
C H A R A C T E R C O N C E P T:

Old Man Grayson
Fifty years ago, Dick Grayson's world ended in the murder of his parents, disguised to appear as a circus accident. He met a man named Bruce Wayne, who not only took him under his wing but entrusted him with the secret of the Batman. For over a decade, Dick fought at Bruce's side as Robin, the Boy Wonder, before a falling out between the two in 1980 prompted Dick to step out from the Batman's shadow. He moved from Gotham City to Bludhaven, got serious with his education, and got a job as a cop. But old habits die hard, and Dick was soon living a double life as Nightwing. But the demands of his job grew with each promotion and age started to sap away at Dick's ability to be what Bludhaven needed him to be. Today, he's Commissioner Dick Grayson of the Bludhaven Police Department.

Toyboy
A mechanical automaton constructed by the Toyman to serve as both a surrogate son and henchman, Toyboy is a literal Pinocchio -- a puppet without strings. Using stolen patents, Toyboy replicates the work of Dr. Phineas Horton. Originally classified as a robot or android, modern scientific nomenclature describes him as a synthetic human or synthezoid. Powered by a Horton Cell battery, Toyboy has been studied by S.T.A.R. Labs since the death of his creator in 1990, where he is overseen by Dr. Sarah Charles.

The Premise
A series of child abductions was already frustrating Commission Grayson, but the disappearance of an entire school bus makes Dick seek out measures beyond the law. Too old to be the Nightwing that Bludhaven needs him to be, Dick turns to a former adversary to do what he cannot.

C H A R A C T E R M O T I V A T I O N S & G O A L S:

Writing a cosmic entity, I wanted a character who could be a dedicated Earth hero, on more of a Teen Titans or street level. Primarily, the Old Man Grayson / Robin dynamic is intended as a foil to Wraith's Old Man Bruce / Terry dynamic. It's a parallel story of an aged, embittered vigilante discovering the limits of his own mortality and living vicariously through their chosen proxies. This allows me to slowly tell Dick Grayson's story in addition to Toyboy's own road to Terminator 2-esque redemption.

C H A R A C T E R N O T E S:

Winslow Schott: A brilliant engineer, Schott's work with the Army during the Korean Conflict brought him into contact with Horton Cells, which may have had a role in damaging his psyche. His later attempts at operating a toy company, like his attempts at a family, failed and in his later years he became the villain known to Gotham as the Toyman. Schott died in 1994 in Ryker's Island.

Anton Schott: The son of the Toyman, the abuse that he suffered at his father's hands resulted in his civil commitment to psychiatric hospitals for most of his life.

The Street Demonz gang, led by Quince Cullen, extends the Black Cullens' influence toward Gotham.

Cissy Chambers: A BPD cop.

The Leviathan Organization, led by Doctor Dedalus.

Colin Wilkes: A young orphan at St. Mary's Home for Boys.

[ Theme ]

As above, so below… Since the time of the Great Flood, when the Empire of Atlantis was shattered and the continent of Poseidonis plunged beneath the sea, peace has long been the solace of the deep. The sundering was followed by dark ages in which some adapted, others evolved, or regressed. As the waters drained from out of the Sahara, an entire culture was wiped from the face of the Earth. But the periods of enlightenment that followed ensured that the developing undersea nations followed a different path than their counterparts on the surface. While war shaped human history, it was peace that defined the city-states of Poseidonis.

New frontiers were explored. Some cities were lost to them, while new ones sprang up to take their place. To the far south, to the Antarctic Circle, the city of Tha-Korr rose up as the capital of the Antarctic Nations. Atlantis survived, its pride intact even if its influence was diminished. The former prison colony of Xebel shook off its chains. The Kingdom of Fishermen flourished into the Holy See of Tritonis. To the vast Pacific, Venturia became the Sparta of the sea, while its sister city of Auriana was their Athens. And the city of Shayeris, home to the mageocracy that had served as the scholars and advisors of Ancient Atlantis became a vassal kingdom to the throne of Atlantis.

All of that changed when Venturia claimed an attack by the surface dwellers. The Council of the Twelve Nations has broken and, with it, so too has the long-lasting peace of the eternal deep. In the face of flaccid diplomacy, King Orm of Atlantis and Queen Clea of Venturia take up arms against the other, dividing up their neighbors for conquest in an unprecedented undersea world war. Both would use the present conflict to their own ends, uniting the undersea nations under a single banner once again.

Return to a history both familiar and new, a world unlike any seen before. A world beneath our very oceans. The saga of the undersea war. The curse of the Trench. Our cast will have to navigate these and other challenges, and they are confronted by political aspirations and ambitions of people who each believe that they are acting for the common good. There are no heroes. There are no villains. Merely victory and tragedy, which too often go hand in hand.

C H A R A C T E R M O T I V A T I O N S & G O A L S:

A modern Greek epic, “A Song of Garth and Fire” will tell a multitude of stories in overlapping detail. It’s not the story of any single character, but for Season 2 will be divided among the point of view of a variety of characters integral to the overarching narrative, with the named four (Garth, Tula, Mar, and Vulko) being the main cast.

C H A R A C T E R N O T E S:

The Twelve Kingdoms of Poseidonis:
The Kingdom of Atlantis (Sea of Atlas, Moroccan Coast)
The Antarctic Nations (Capital: Tha-Korr; Southern Arctic Region)
The City-State of Xebel (Bermuda Triangle)
The Holy See of Tritonis (Fisherman Kingdom; Greek Archipelago)
The Kingdom of the Brine* (Northern Arctic Region)
The Kingdom of Venturia (Pacific Ocean/Hawaiian Islands)
The City-State of Auriana (Pacific, shared border with Venturia)
The Kingdom of Lemuria (Great Barrier Reef)
The Deserter Kingdom (Sahara, extinct)
The Lost Kingdom of the Trench (Marianas Trench)
The United Kingdom of Shayeris and Crastinus (The Idyllist Kingdom; aka The Hidden Valley)
The Lost City of Thierna na Oge (Ireland/Wales)

• His Royal Highness Belgarth Melicertes Triton, Heir to the Throne of the United Kingdom of Shayeris and Crastinus, Apprentice to the Third Circle of Mysteries, the Prince of Idylls. Otherwise known simply as Garth, the only son of King Thar of Shayeris. Because he has not yet come of age, he continues to hold the title Prince of Idylls rather than King of Idylls.

Vulko, Keeper of the Sacred Chalice of Mommur, the Steward of Shayeris. Serves as the de jure head of state for the nation of Shayeris until Prince Garth comes of age. Leads the Circle of Knowledge, Shayeris’ magocratic republic council.

Mar of the Brine. A Plodex youth, presented as an egg to King Thar by the Brine on the occasion of Garth’s birth. He serves as Gar’s page, attendant, and friend.

• Her Grace, Tula Leucothea Adrasteia of Atlantis, the Duchess of Tlapallan. A young, teenaged girl who came to Shayeris as a child bride betrothed to the infant prince by the command of her uncle, King Orvax of Atlantis.

Clea, Queen of Venturia. First to seek the title of Ocean Master, so that she might lead a war against the surface world for their pollution of the sea. Lemuria, the Antarctic Nations, and a conquered Auriana form the basis for her claim.

Orm Marius, the current reigning King of Atlantis, ascending upon the death of Orvax Marius. Orm seeks to dissolve the Council of Nations so that a resurgent Empire of Atlantis can emerge. He is supported by Xebel and, begrudgingly, by an occupied Shayeris. The invasion of Shayeris serves as political clout to try and force the cooperation of the Holy See of Tritonis and the Brine.

Rogue’s Gallery: Black Manta, Hagan, The Unforgiven Dead, Bres, Devilfish, the Trench

• *Note: In Absolute Bounceverse, “Brine” is a common term used to describe the Plodex people.

"S H A Z A M !"

Billy Batson is the chosen successor to Jedidiah of Canaan, otherwise known as Shazam, the guardian of the Rock of Eternity. Originally, just a sorcerer’s apprentice, Billy would only receive his powers when he uttered the wizard’s name. Billy emerged into the chaos of the Second World War and quickly became notable as one of the young heroes of the war. Under the leadership of Thomas Raymond (Toro), he formed a team known as the Young Allies with Lizzie Lawrence (Liberty Belle) and were notable for supporting Operation Dragoon in Southern France. Remarked upon by the media of the day for his Herculean feats, Billy became known as “Captain Marvel.” At the war’s end, the death of Shazam passed control of the Rock of Eternity to Billy as he departed the physical world in order to begin his training in earnest.

Recently returned to physical form, Billy has assumed the guise of an ordinary boy attending school in Fawcett City while he adjusts back to both physical form and how human society has changed in the past 76 years. At the same time, people and organizations from his past have taken note of a young superboy who has appeared, closely resembling a forgotten hero of WW2.

C H A R A C T E R M O T I V A T I O N S & G O A L S:

Billy Batson has always been a character distinguished by trauma, much like Batman or other Golden Age heroes. His being an orphan, his struggles with the foster care system, and his vulnerability as a child have always been contrasted by both the power of Captain Marvel and his optimistic personality. I want to explore a fresh take on Billy as the wizard, where he’s still the same vulnerable child at heart but burdened by the weight of decades and struggling to remain true to who he is in the face of his responsibilities as Shazam.

C H A R A C T E R N O T E S:

As the current Shazam, Billy Batson is the physical embodiment of the Rock of Eternity and, thus, is always empowered by it. He can alter his outward appearance, either by use of illusion or temporally displacing his physical body.

In this context, Billy is both Shazam and Captain Marvel. Shazam being the title of the guardian of the Rock of Eternity and Captain Marvel being the name that the newspapers gave him during the Second World War.

Supporting Cast
- Aelfyre Whitemane. The Shazam counterpart for the planet Kymellia. A longtime friend of the Wizard Shazam and one of Billy’s mentors. Aelfyre is the guardian of the White Room.

- Roma. The daughter of Merlin and the Shazam counterpart for the dimension known as Otherworld. Serves as the guardian of the Starlight Citadel and is another of Billy’s mentors.

- Kofi Whitemane (“Freddy Freeman”). Aelfyre’s nephew and his chosen successor, learning firsthand from Billy. He has an equine appearance, to include reverse knee joints on the legs. To blend in on Earth, he assumes a human guise as Freddy Freeman but feigns a physical disability to mask his different leg anatomy.

- Courtney Whitmore (Stargirl). A new heroine starting out as young as Billy had. She wields a cosmic staff.

- Smartship Friday. Kofi’s Kymellian spaceship, which doubles as his home on Earth (shared with Billy). When not in use, concealed within an abandoned subway station in Fawcett City.

Rogue’s Gallery
- Dr. Thaddeus Silvana. The aging patriarch of Silvana Heavy Industries, with a hidden obsession into Nazi occult research into eternal life.

- Blaze. Daughter of Mephisto and one of the Under-Lords of Hell.

- Micah Flint (Rock). An astronaut irradiated and transformed into a rock-like monster in a cosmic accident.

- Belasco. One of Earth’s most powerful sorcerers, banished to Limbo over a century ago by Shazam.

L O K I
Loki Laufeyson, Ageless/Immortal
Vigilante based in Asgard
Active since 5 minutes ago (at least, that he remembers...)

Character Concept

He doesn't know where he came from.

He doesn't know how he got here.

He doesn't know where he's going, only that he has to keep moving. What is he running from? He doesn't know. He only knows that he can't stop. They call him Seurre. A pickpocket and thief traveling across Europe with only his wits and the shirt on his back.

The Bifrost is broken. Wars have broken out across the Nine Realms. Winter has come. But can what is written be changed? Or is all the world a stage, and Loki but a player in it?

This is intended as a fantasy epic, that will be largely self-contained in terms of the storytelling.
 • Book 1: When The Truth Hunts You Down. Guided by Mjolnir, Beta Ray Bill arrives on Midgard, where he discovers the god Loki reincarnated as a child named Seurre, with no memory of what happened. Seeking answers, the pair set out in search of Asgard.
 • Book 2: The Dark World. On a quest to retrieve one of the Norn Stones, in the hopes of repairing the Bifrost, Beta Ray Bill and Loki must voyage over the Nidafjoll Mountains and across Nastrond to the serpent's spring.
 • Book 3: Loki: Ragnarok.

Key Notes

Thousands of years ago, the Council of Wizards protected the developing human societies from all manner of threats. Over the course of centuries, those battles took their toll on the Council, until Shazam was the last. It was only then that the man recalled the life he’d left behind, the family that he’d forgotten, and went in search of the tribe that he’d turned his back to many generations before. He discovered his people massacred, a single boy pulled from the fire to survive his family line, placed in shackles and cast into the turquoise mines of Ancient Egypt. When the spark of rebellion was ignited by the boy’s brash nature – courage or foolishness - he was to be executed, a child sacrifice to serve as a slave to the god Toth. The Wizard saved the boy from death, keeping their relation concealed as he allowed his powers to flow through the youth. Shazam’s purpose was to mold the boy into a proper champion who could protect humanity after him.

That was 5,000 years ago. Teth-Adam is still learning, and it’s been a rough road to get here.

Shazam gave the boy the power to overcome his demons. Instead, the child conquered his enemies. Leading a revolt, the city-state of Kahndaq in the ancient world was founded upon a turquoise mine as the slaves cast off their shackles and drove out their Egyptian masters. And, for a time, there existed a place of prosperity, knowledge, and peace that was unrivaled by any, a desert analog to the fabled Camelot. A classless society, where all men were free and equal to one another. But women were traded as property, not even second-class citizens. Order was maintained through a strict series of laws, with public executions carried out in the middle of each week. For hundreds of years, this jewel shone brighter than Egypt’s dynasties, until an usurper known as Ahk-Ton seized the throne of Kahndaq through an infernal pact known as the Crown of Sabac. The Wizard Shazam intervened in the battle that unfolded, which laid waste to the great city of Shiruta. He broke Ahk-Ton’s crown and banished the demon Sabac back to the flames of Hell, and then entombed Teth-Adam in the wreckage of his city to dwell over the choices that had ushered in the tragic rise and fall of Kahndaq.

That tomb was unearthed by a British archaeologist in 1928, but it wasn’t a boy who stumbled out of his prison – it was a young woman. Stripped of his (her) powers, Teth-Adam found that the only spell that he (she) was capable of casting was the name of Shazam. Adopting the identity of Mary Bromfield, he (she) would become a member of the Justice Society of America during the Allies European campaign in World War II. Unable to say the name Shazam, the red, gold, and white garbed hero became known as Captain Marvel, though the heroic actions of both herself and her companion Liberty Belle were often denigrated in comparison to their male counterparts - precisely the lesson about walking in the shoes of the oppressed that the Wizard had in mind for Teth.

At the end of the War, Teth/Mary was tasked to stop the atomic bombing of Japan. Refusing, Teth/Mary instead allowed the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima to take place, as he/she believed it a strategically sound move on the part of the Allies. For this defiance, the Wizard summoned Teth-Adam to the Rock of Eternity, restoring him to his original form before casting him across the cosmos, to make his way back (literally and metaphorically) to being Earth’s champion.

Billy returned to find the world embroiled in war once again, this time from the sea as Atlantis invaded. With his youthful appearance, violent disposition, and brash manner, Teth-Adam clashed with the Justice League and instead found more of a kinship with the teenage titans that operated on the fringes of the League’s tolerance (or apathy, whichever may have been the case).

Today, he is a solitary figure who often sits atop Mount Justice and looks out over the world that has caused him so much grief. He’s supposed to be Earth’s champion. It’s a job he’s been training for since time immemorial, and he’s still got a lot to learn.

________________________________________________________________________________________
Drawing inspiration from Justice League Beyond’s interpretation as Billy, Shazam, Black Adam, Mary Marvel, and Captain Marvel being 5 separate identities sharing 1 body, this is a reinterpretation that pitches Teth-Adam singularly in those roles. Typically, I focus on Billy Batson but my vision often chafes against the modern retelling of his personality. In this instance, I merge the idea of “Asshole Batson” with Black Adam, probably not at all from having watched the movie recently and I think it makes for a more compelling and interesting character than either Billy or Teth-Adam by themselves.

I’ve worked out a connection with Static with @Retired owing to their shared “titans” history. Other characters of the period are also welcome to work in connections.

The rings of Oa are the most powerful weapons known to man. Across 3,600 mapped sectors of this galaxy, the rings of Oa enable the heroic agents of the Guardians of the Universe -- the Green Lantern Corps! As peacekeepers, these Green Lanterns come under attack by all manner of force, natural and man-made. Through hard won victory or bitter defeat, the Corps is continually planning to induct new members into its ranks to fill the void left by those who have gone before them. To that end, the rings are sent out to the cosmos to find those rare individuals possessing extraordinary will.

Unfortunately, now and again, a ring comes back on the hand of a kid who is maybe ten or twelve years old.

This is the story of how a boy from Earth came to wield the powers of Green Lantern. Drawing inspiration from Ender’s Game, the New Mutants, and Jonny Quest, this concept combines 50s pulp sci-fi adventures with slice of life elements in order to tell the story of the kids who might be the next generation of Green Lanterns.

C H A R A C T E R M O T I V A T I O N S & G O A L S:

I’ve written Kai-ro a few times before, but always cast him in the role of Hal Jordan. This eschews that approach for a different take that better uses my talent for world-building by using a concept capable of both sandboxing and collaboration across storylines/locations in our shared universe. The goal is to start with the story of how Kai-Ro became a Green Lantern candidate, transition into Alien-of-the-Episode type adventures, before unveiling a larger storyline at the conclusion of the initial story run.

C H A R A C T E R N O T E S:

The following are characters, concepts, or organizations in use with this story:

Al-x: An alien from Sector 0424, who has a Greys-like appearance. He is 104 years old, but young for his species. Strategic and analytical, but hesitant to act without all the information.

Arisia Rrab: A young Graxosian, with golden hued skin and hair, as well as pointed ears. Hot-blooded and precocious, she often acts without thinking.

B’dg: A diminutive H’lven, with a squirrel-like appearance. What he lacks in size or strength, he makes up for with a large personality.

Alisand’r: A Green Lantern from the planet Tamaran, the chosen instructor for the current class of Green Lantern cadets.

Ganthet of Oa: One of the Guardians of the Galaxy, who has adopted the role of overseer to the Green Lanterns training program and mentor to the young cadets.

• The Planet Mogo: The headquarters of the Green Lanterns cadet training program, and also secretly one of the Green Lanterns most secret weapons -- a sentient planet who is, itself, a Green Lantern.

The Spider Guild: An insectoid race of spiders that prey upon the planets that they conquer.

The Reach: An interstellar empire that assimilates other planets into its collective through careful political manuevering and subterfuge, subjugating the populace only after its collaborators and sleeper agents have established control over the populace. Rebellions are usually bloody and short.

The Manhunters: The precursor to the modern day Green Lantern Corps, robotic peacekeepers created by the Guardians of the Galaxy and empowered to preserve order in the galaxy. Unfortunately, the Manhunters determined that organic life was a threat to order and massacred the planet Ryut before the Guardians could put a stop to them.

Tybalt Bak’sar: An intergalactic bounty hunter who wields anti-Green Lantern weaponry.

S U P E R B O Y
Matrix, ~300 years (constructed c. 17th Century CE)
Vigilante based in Smallville, Kansas
Active since 5 minutes ago (debut)

Character Concept

What if all that survived Krypton was the technology that they left behind in the universe?

Once a great empire of the stars, Krypton's wars nearly destroyed them. They managed to rebuild the society from near collapse, losing contact or even reliable information on the colonies they may have had at one time. History became legend, and legend became folktale. Then, hundreds of years ago, a man named Var-El set out to try and prove that life existed beyond Krypton, to include the lost colonies. After much study, he found several astrological objects with potential to be the fabled Lost Colonies of Daxam or Rokyn. Pioneering a method of fold space, Var-El devised a means of interstellar transportation but the means to transport a ship of living beings was beyond the capabilities of Krypton as it was then. So, instead, he devised a techno-organic probe -- sunstone suspended in a protoplasmic matrix -- which would be capable of enduring the journey, cataloging the planet, and transmitting its findings back to Krypton. Its ability to mask itself from visual light was a safeguard against contaminating a society or culture before it could be understood. However, in case of extraterrestrial contact, the probe was programmed to assume a non-threatening appearance.

This matrix arrived at the astronomical coordinates for object Y-217 sometime in Earth's 17th Century. After completing its survey of the world, to include the indigenous species, the matrix concluded that the planet was not one of the lost colonies. After settling upon an undisturbed area in the middle of the continent that would become known as North America, the matrix transmitted its findings and awaited instructions. It would lose the signal to Krypton a few decades later, after which the probe shut down.

Centuries past. The British Empire founded the colonies, which fought a War of Independence and, later, claimed the American west. The area where the matrix lay dormant was called Kansas. A veteran of the Second World War, Jonathan Kent moved to Smallville in order to escape the city life for a quiet retirement. While plowing the fields of his new farm, the man unearthed something unexpected.

Now, unable to contact Krypton, Matrix continues its mission by learning of the culture of humanity through the morals and stories of Jonathan Kent, when the news arrived: A robot hero, the Red Tornado.

Based on the Post Crisis "Last Son of Krypton" storyline, and drawing inspiration from The Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot, this is a take on the Superman mythos that borrows from the Post Crisis/Pre-Zero Hour Supergirl (Matrix) to create a different Last Son. The basic premise is that Matrix is a machine, inspired by the media accounts of Red Tornado, and sets out to be a hero like its fellow robot. What follows is a tale of trust and betrayal that asks, what measure is a man?

Nothing in this concept prevents a Kara or Power Girl, or an Earth-2 origin for Clark (or any other Superman family character). The notion is that, right now, Matrix believes it has merely lost contact with Krypton. Elements of that will develop over time to Matrix believing himself to be the last survivor of Kyrpton, but that notion will be challenged as the story unfolds as well (which creates room for other PCs to emerge within the shared mythos).

Ultimately, the goal is to create a character that I can tell solo stories/vignettes with, while being free to collaborate and jump across narratives as need be.

Key Notes

The reinvention here is that Matrix is cast as a Krptonian machine intended as a scientific probe, as opposed to an artificial clone of Lana Lang. The machine is composed of pieces of sunstone suspended in a protoplasmic matrix -- from which the probe derives its common name. Bio-neural circuitry produces telekinetic fields, which allow the matrix to re-structure or compress its mass. His actual physical appearance is a purple mass that is similar in consistency to wet sand. Outward appearance is alterable by means of holograms constructed through the principle of silicon magnetics.

Supporting Cast
 • Red Tornado
 • John Henry Irons
 • Cat Grant
 • Jimmy Olsen
 • Jonathan Kent
 • Martha Kent

Rogue's Gallery
 • Professor T.O. Morrow
 • Alexander "Lex" Luthor
 • General Samuel Lane
 • Metallo (John Corben)
 • Toyman (Winslow Schott)

 • Titano
 • Eradicator - reimagined as a later model Matrix

S M A L L V I L L E
Kansas, United States of America
April 14, 1964

“...up now we take you back to 1944 with this piece by the Glen Miller Band.”

The engine case on the tractor was open. A woman in a sun bonnet and a long skirt sat in the driver’s seat, watching as a man rolled up his sleeves and labored with a wrench.

“I told you, I didn’t like the look of that salesman.”

Wiping the sweat from his brow, the man shot the woman a look. Middling in his forties now, Jonathan Kent was a powerful figure of an aging soldier. “Just some bad fuel,” the man offered flatly, before adding, “Try it now.”

Pumping the gas pedal a few times, the woman leaned forward to turn the starter. The engine seemed to give a whirl of protest before the starter turned over.

Closing the engine case, the man pulled a rag from out of his pocket and wiped at the grease staining his hands. As the woman stepped down, he just looked at her and said, “Tractor’s fine.”

“Or I just married a good mechanic,” the woman tossed back playfully.

As she stepped by, the man gently smacked her butt to send her on her way back to the farm house. Then, tucking the rag back into his pocket, climbed up into the tractor and moved the tractor into gear.

The plow was already attached. The fickle contraption took an act of God to get going, then the engine had stalled on him in the middle of clearing the field. At this rate, it felt like it’d be summer before he had the field tilled. Easing the tractor forward, he grimaced at the notion that Martha might have been right as the vehicle lurched awkwardly. A sigh escaped him when it had finally started creeping forward.

Relaxing into the drive, the man just held the wheel steady as he continued on down the row. The goal was to have corn and cabbage planted, but if he was going to get caught up with the almanac schedule, he might have to take on some extra hands…

The tractor stopped.

Jonathan lurched into the steering wheel. It was only after the fact that the realization hit him. It wasn’t a stall, the plow had hit something. “Oh, God damn,” the man swore under his breath. The engine seized, then summarily died.

Martha had heard it. He could see his wife walking back from the house. Holding up a hand, he waved the woman back as he jumped down. “It’s all right. Something in the ground,” the man shouted, before glancing back at the plow as he stepped to the back.

Over on the porch of the house, the radio seemed to skip several frequencies. “Bottom of the seventh inning, Twins and Indians, the score now…”

Kneeling down, the man looked over where the plow seemed lodged in a purplish sand.. Flecks of something like gold stood out. It was, quite simply, the oddest thing he’d ever seen. Reaching down, the man pinched a bit of the odd substance. It looked like sand -- it had a grit to it -- but it felt more like... gelatin?

The radio slid over another band of stations. Andy Williams suddenly came across the air, singing, “A fool never learns and I’m gonna do the very foolish thing...”

There was a moment where Jonathan stopped being curious and a sense of dread sank in. The hair stood up on the back of his neck. It felt like...

It felt like there was someone standing over his shoulder.

From underneath the plow, the purple goo seemed to shift and move on its own. It floated up from the ground. Large droplets at first, then a stream. A series of streams. Jonathan took several steps back, watching with his jaw agape as a purple ball formed in mid-air.

When he finally found his voice, the man shouted, “Martha, get in the house!”

The purple ball just hung in the air. Hovering, like a bee over a flower. Except, there were no wings. It was just a... ball.

A ball of what, Jonathan was certain he had no idea.

A series of lights seemed to flicker around the ball. Then, he could hear his own voice echo back at him as he heard, “Martha, get in the house!”

The man took another step back.

The ball started to change. Subtle at first, expanding outward until something like arms, legs, and a head began to appear. The roughly humanoid shape was like a figure made of a purple clay, until there was a shimmer and...

And then Jonathan Kent found himself looking at a boy.

He couldn’t be more than ten years old. A mop of dark hair and a pair of blue eyes that seemed to glow. He was dressed in a blue shirt and red shorts, with red boots and a crest emblazoned across the front like a giant S.

The child’s feet silently touched down on the ground. He looked directly at the man. And then he said, “There is no cause for alarm.” Holding out his arms, palms open, the boy inclined his head toward the man, then slowly turned and did the same toward the woman. When he had turned back to Jonathan a moment later, he said, “I mean you no harm.”

Jonathan shot a glance over at Martha. She was giving him the same look. Mouth still agape, the man turned back toward the boy with more questions than he knew how to ask.

Hands still raised, the boy gestured faintly to indicate the spot that the plow had hit. “I was dormant here. It was never my intention to disturb you,” the strange youth offered. Then paused a moment, again looked at the man and then the woman. This time, when he spoke again, he said, “I have frightened you. My appearance is meant to be non-threatening. Is there a different form that I could assume which may put you more at ease?”

During the War, Jonathan had seen a lot of things he couldn’t explain. More than a couple he didn’t care to recall. Still, he’d have thought himself crazy for what he was about to say.

“You’re not human.”

Now it was the boy’s turn to be taken aback. Or, at least, he seemed uncertain of how to respond. “That is correct,” the youth stated finally. “I am still calculating my period of dormancy. Has your species made contact with non-human lifeforms?”

“Non-human lifeforms,” Jonathan echoed. He was trying to wrap his brain around that statement. He thought he understood it, but he didn’t like the implication.

“You mean animals?” Martha uttered, speaking up from where she stood off a distance.

The boy gave a tilt of his head. “Curious,” he uttered aloud, as though not certain, himself, just what to think of the two of them.

Jonathan recovered enough to ask, “Who are you?”

The boy looked back at the man. For a brief moment, the boy seemed to flicker and the purple clay figure underneath was visible. “As you have observed, this appearance is an illusion. Though, it is not my intent to deceive you,” the strange figure offered, as the child-like appearance again shimmered into being. “This form is intended to facilitate interaction. I am a what, rather than a who. A tool, or machine, if you will.”

“All right,” the man uttered, holding up a hand as he asked, “What are you?”

“I am a protoplasmic matrix. Or just matrix, if you prefer,” the youth answered, with the same seeming candor as before. Slowly, the child-like figure lowered its arms and then gestured toward the man as it asked, “To whom do I have the honor of addressing?”

The man’s jaw hung open a second time. The honor of addressing? Well, this was just a first time for everything. “Name’s Kent,” the man stated flatly.

“Mister Kent,” the boy intoned politely, then turned toward the woman as he asked, “And you are Mrs. Kent?”

“I’ll ask the questions, if you don’t mind,” Jonathan uttered. Hearing his own voice, he realized it was a tad more forceful than he’d intended.

Turning back toward the man, the child seemed to give a nod of acknowledgement. “I do not,” the boy responded.

Which, honestly, threw the man off for a moment as he hadn’t expected a response. Or, that response, anyway. When he recovered, the man asked, “You referred to yourself as a tool. Were you left here?”

“I am designed for exploration and research,” the boy stated, preferencing the explanation as he added, “I was conducting a geological survey of this area when I lost contact with my home observatory. When that happened, I assumed my input was no longer required and shut down.”

Yeah, this was going exactly where Jonathan had hoped that it wasn’t. “And this observatory,” the man began, pausing there as his mind was still working through the implications. A machine? No way he was Russian. Jonathan couldn’t fathom anyone with technology like this. “It's on another planet.”

Yeah, it sounded crazy. Even to him, and he’d just said it aloud.

“Mars?”

The child’s head tilted in the other direction. After a short pause, as though mulling that question over, the boy responded, “I am unfamiliar with an astronomical unit of that designation. Do you refer to a world within your solar system or outside?”

“Mars is the red planet,” Jonathan answered, in his mind trying to recall his school science lessons. “It's the fourth planet from our sun.”

“Noted,” the boy chirped, as a planetarium seemed to pop into being right over the man’s head.

“Holy Jesus...” the man uttered, taking yet another step back as he craned his head back to what seemed a night’s sky at mid-day.

“This is your solar system as I recorded it when I arrived here,” The child explained, reaching up to motion toward a red object. “So this planet is Mars,” the boy remarked, before pointing to a blue-green orb. “My creators know your world only by its astronomical designation Y-two-one-seven. How is it called by your people?”

Pursing his lips, the man just blurted out, “How long were you lying in that ground?”

A tangent. The boy seemed to pause, as though considering the question. Or, perhaps, how to address the question. “It is difficult to correlate time as it is perceived in different star systems. Without a connection to Kelex, I am unable to determine the present Krypton Standard Time,” the boy offered, all of which sailed straight over the man’s head.

“I’ll take that as you're not sure.”

“Accurate,” the boy affirmed with a slight nod. “I require further analysis of your stellar bodies to arrive at that answer. However, I have not previously recorded human development of electromagnetic frequencies or internal combustion engines,” the strange youth clarified, gesturing first toward the radio and then back to the tractor behind him. “Clearly, a significant period of human societal development has occured in my dormancy.”

“Earth,” Jonathan offered finally. When the boy again tilted his head, the man explained, “We call our planet Earth.”

“Thank you,” the boy offered politely.

Gesturing up at the planetarium, the man threw whatever sanity aside as he asked what seemed, bizarrely, the only sane question. “So you’re not from any of these planets, I take it?”

The planetarium illusion seemed to dissolve. For a brief moment, Jonathan got the sense that something like a fine sand was hanging in the air, before the boy drew his attention back to the youth as he said, “I originate from a planet located in a different star system, which my creators named Krypton.”

The man seemed to weigh that for a moment. “And Kelex is..?” the man asked, recalling the boy’s words from earlier.

The head tilt again. After a brief pause, the child spoke and offered, “Based on a limited perception of humanity’s present level of technology, it is difficult to articulate a response that may be within your comprehension.”

“Huh,” Jonathan uttered gruffly.

The grunt seemed to prompt the boy to consider his earlier statement. “I do not mean to demean or seem dismissive. It is merely a difficulty in composing a translation.”

The man merely gave a nod. Then, he started to walk around the child-like figure. “I take it you’re not intending violence,” the man observed candidly, rationalizing aloud as he explained, “If you were, you wouldn’t be lying in the dirt or having this conversation with me.”

“So why come here?”

The man and the boy each looked over toward the woman as she spoke. Gesturing faintly as she spoke, Martha asked, “If you’re from outer space, why come to Earth at all?”

The boy seemed to consider his response for a moment. Then he finally spoke and posed, “Your people developed telescopes in order to study the stars. Why did they do that?”

“You’re answering a question with a question,” Jonathan remarked from behind the boy.

“Because I believe our answers are one in the same,” the strange youth answered, turning to look at the man for a moment, then back over to Martha as he said, “And hope to provide you a human example that you may better associate with.”

“So you’re a….” Jonathan began, finding himself at a pause. What would someone from Krypton be called? If someone from Mars was a Martian, then: “Kryptonian?”

“No, but I was invented by the Kryptonians.” the matrix supplied in answer. “Three matrices dispatched to three different astronomical objects in order to answer several questions about those planets. I was the matrix assigned to study this planet you call Earth.”

“So what were the questions?” Martha asked. When both Jonathan and the boy had looked her way again, she added, “The ones you were sent her to answer.”

“Is there life on this planet? What kind? Does the life exhibit art, music, language, or demonstrate social constructs that may be unique to it?” the boy rattled off, before he paused and stated, “I am not a living being as you are, but if I understand my creator’s desires then I believe the ultimate question is, are we alone in the universe?

Are we alone in the universe. Jonathan couldn’t have said he hadn’t heard the question posed before. Perhaps a dozen times. “That is the ultimate question,” the man echoed finally.

The boy turned to regard the man for a moment. “It resonates with you?”

“I think I understand it, yes,” Jonathan answered, oddly finding himself at ease with the strange figure.

The man glanced over to his wife for a moment, as though debating his next words carefully. Then, turned and asked,“You still have no contact with your observatory, I take it?”

“I have initiated a signal to indicate that updated information is available,” the boy responded simply. “However, due to the distances involved, it will be approximately one of your years before any response may be forthcoming.”

“Well, I seem to have plowed your resting spot,” Jonathan noted, laying a hand on the till. Glancing down at the boy, the farmed asked pointedly, “What will you do until then?”

The matrix again gave a tilt of its head as it contemplated the inquiry. Then, when he had looked up again, asked, “You appear to be in the process of tilling the soil. May I be of assistance?”

This is the story you know.

Jason Todd was born into poverty, growing up in Gotham’s crime alley. The son of mafioso-wannabe Willis “The Score” Todd and a prostitute named Shelia Haywood, Jason miraculously survived infancy, with Gotham’s underfunded Child Protective Services either too inept or too overwhelmed to take much notice of the boy growing up in crack houses and meth labs. His mother had custody until an arrest for prostitution and parole violation, later dying of a fentanyl overdose. In kindergarten, Jason bounced around several foster homes before the courts placed him with his father and Willis’ new wife, Catherine. Fewer drugs, more beatings.

Then one day his father left for a “big score” and never returned. As soon as his step-mom realized what had happened, she skipped town, leaving Jason alone and confused. Come to find out, the “big score” was ripping off Black Mask. Which, didn’t take long for Mask’s thugs to come around, looking for anyone at the Todd residence. They ransacked the place, beat Jason, and said they’d be back. Jason didn’t intend to be there when they returned, bailing out onto the streets.

He got picked up by the cops a few times. In and out of foster homes again. In and out of juvenile detention. In and out of school, slowly falling into any abyss of crime, poverty, and homelessness that seemed to define life as he knew it. One time he ran and managed to last a week on the streets. He saw a cop pull a car over for a traffic stop, with a box of doughnuts on the seat of the empty patrol unit. He figured that could be dinner and the cop wouldn’t notice. Instead, he wound up in the chase of his life for a couple of pastries that represented in first chance to eat in more than a day.

Which was when he ran into the Batman.

Seriously, he’s getting chased by the cops and the goddamn Batman for a couple of doughnuts.

You’d think he’d just jacked the tires off the Batmobile...

Welcome to Robin Year One. Well, Robin: The Next Generation Year One, anyway. Only hopefully without all the awkwardness of pre-beard Riker. (Where you at, Star Trek fans? I know you feel me on this.)

As much as this is exactly what it says on the tin (a Post-Crisis Jason Todd), my goal is to vary up the storytelling by alternating between stories that focus on Jason and Gotham with stories that broaden the narrative by crafting a version of Outlaws/Young Justice to be another literary outlet. In doing so, I hope I’ve adapted a mix of characters that won’t step on anyone’s toes or be disruptive.

So, I've included the team roster for illustration, but this is a Jason Todd POV. The Outlaws/Young Justice piece just gives me a way to alternate so I'm not just focusing on Gotham stories with him and can change it up to keep things fresh.

C H A R A C T E R N O T E S:

The Bat-Family characters are obviously shared with @Roman. Inclusion of a Green Lantern coordinated with @Hound55.

Alfred Pennyworth - Jason’s nemesis. The man is a supervillain, Jason is certain of it.

Dick Grayson - Nightwing. Hero of Bludhaven and a big brother/mentor for Jason.

Renee Montoya - A Gotham police officer who works as a school liaison officer with the Gotham public schools.

Al-x - A Green Lantern cadet (and the self-appointed leader of the Outlaws).

Tandy Bowen - Cloak, a teenage vigilante who draws on the Lightforce.

Tyrone Johnson - Dagger, a teenage vigilante who draws on the Darkforce.

Mar (they/them) - A young Plodex recently hatched in the sewers of Gotham.

Dr. Bradford Thorne, MD - The brother of Rupert Thorne, running a free clinic in Crime Alley. He tries to do what he can to help those hurt by his brother's crime and drugs, but often winds up getting sucked into the criminal underworld by family.

Rupert Thorne - One of Gotham City's councilmen, who runs the Tobacconist's Club, which is a front for an organization known as Leviathan.

Waylon Jones (Killer Croc) - Rupert Thorne's enforcer.

William and Andrew Mallory (Wrath and Scorn) - An anti-Batman and Robin formed by the sons of criminals put away by the Batman.
