Long ago, between the fall of the Roman Empire and the rise of King Arthur and his Camelot, there stretched an age undreamed of—an era swallowed by shadow and fire, where history blurred into myth, and myth into legend. The world teetered on the edge of chaos, carved by steel and shaped by ancient magics. It was a time of heroes and monsters, of crumbling empires and forgotten gods who walked among mortals in disguise or in wrath.

In the wild borderlands, warlords claimed kingdoms with blood and blade. Sorcerers, both wise and wicked, plundered the ruins of fallen Rome, seeking knowledge older still. The stars themselves whispered omens, and strange beasts prowled the darkened forests. The veil between worlds grew thin, and the spirits of the old ways stirred once more.

Amid this tumult rose champions—some noble, others damned—whose deeds would echo through the ages. Bound by fate or vengeance, by prophecy or desire, they strode the shattered world as giants among men. And as the twilight of the old gods fell, and a new light gathered on the distant horizon, all knew: the world would be remade, one final time, in blood and fire.

Welcome to the Age of Swords and Sorcery. Will you rise as a hero, or burn as a tyrant?

So this was an idea I had kicking around in my head for a while. I want to do an RP with more of a gritty Swords and Sorcery setting. Think Conan the Barbarian or Elric of Melnibone. Magic exists in this world, but it is viewed as dangerous. You're not going to see wizards or mages slinging spells everywhere, and the ones that do possess magic often use it for nefarious purposes. Monsters of every kind roam the land, and they can range from your run-of-the-mill fare of giant spiders, wolves, undead, dragons, etc. to eldritch abominations and cosmic horrors. You may even run into cults who worship these beasts as gods-and yes, they will sacrifice you to them. There are also a pantheon of gods out there who could either be benevolent and just-or downright evil and destructive. Perhaps you align yourself with one of these gods-the choice is yours.

Anywho, I've said enough. but I will be sure to explain more later. For now, I just wanted to get this out and see if anyone else was up for it. If you love tales of adventure and heroism like I do, and you pine for the days of down-to-earth, no frills pulp fantasy, then this RP is for you!

@NewDirt Roughly around four or five for a proper party. I already have a good starting quest in mind.

@Sarge67 Excellent! Swords and Sorcery is actually a subgenre of fantasy-and happens to be one of my favorites. It focuses on smaller, personal stories instead of huge, world-spanning epics like high fantasy. Often these stories cross into the realm of dark fantasy or cosmic horror. They usually revolve around the adventures of a singular character, but for this RP, I was thinking more of an adventuring party.

@Kiragan_Natsuki Sounds good. Do you mind teasing the starting quest or the starting location? I'd love to get a character concept working that fits well within the environment and the story.

@NewDirt Certainly! The main quest will begin in Albion.

Albion is similar to a Celtic/Arthurian/Early Medieval setting. Rolling hills, deep forests, castles, that sort of thing. The queen of Albion tasks our adventurers with recovering a magical artifact from a sorcerer in a crystal tower. This artifact (name withheld) can see into the past and the future-however, it is at the cost of the user's sanity. With each use, the person's mind is worn down by dark forces beyond their control.

It's cliched and vague, I know, but this is just to get everyone's feet wet. There will be quite a bit that happens along the way to the tower.

Hey! If I'm not too late I would be interested in this. I haven't played the game you mention but I think my character would fit in easily.

@fleshandfang Hey! Good to see you here! You're more than welcome to join! Actually it's not a game-it's more of a subgenre of fantasy. If you're familiar with Conan or the old Sega game Golden Axe, that's basically what Swords and Sorcery is all about.

UPDATE

Seeing as we have at least four people showing interest, I'll go ahead and start drafting the OOC. It should be up sometime today or tomorrow, depending on if work is merciful to me (or doesn't kick my ghoulies all the way to my head)

I do enjoy a world of swords and sorceries. Gritty oldschool fantasy is always a good time to me. Consider me interested as well.

Can I play a villain? A witch or warlock. . .

@ActRaiserTheReturned Unfortunately most of the villains will be NPCs, so I'm afraid that's a no. However, you can play as a witch or a warlock, but do keep in mind that magic in this world isn't as widespread as in high fantasy-plus, magic usually comes at a cost to the user. This is in the form of either a blood pact with a demon or a god, damning the user's soul for all eternity, a ritual sacrifice-often of someone very close to the person, or (taking a page from Raistlin Majere of the Dragonlance Saga), their health would be ravaged by the acquiring of such powerful magic to the point they would be frail and sickly.

@ActRaiserTheReturned Sorry if I derailed anything. Wasn't meaning to discourage your creativity. Regardless of the implications, we always need a magic user in the group.

Because I'm unfamiliar with Swords and Sorcery, I'm going to see what everyone else wants to play before making a decision. Is character creation similar to D&D or vastly different?

@Sarge67

Unless the boss is intending to use a game system, the phrase ‘sword and sorcery’ is just a shorthand way to describe oldschool low fantasy worlds. Conan the Barbarian fits the themes and genre ‘sword and sorcery’, for example.

Usually the magic is evil, heavily negative in connotation, old, and misunderstood or feared. Shamans and druids and natural world phenomenon like giant beasts, dire wolves, massive serpents, etc, are to be feared and awed.

Cults to demons, sorcerers of evil power, old ruins, and a low technology base are all things to expect in ‘sword and sorcery’ worlds.

Conan is often half naked, scarcely armored, with weapons of steel being rare and coveted. It’s typically more ‘tribal chieftains vying to be king of the known lands’ and less ‘the knights of king arthur on a quest with Merlin’

Tribalism, fear, dark nights, scary monsters, powerful and mighty heroes. That’s the vibe usually.

Here's an idea for a magic user. This warlock is old and dying. By the end of the quest he will finally pass on to the after life of his religion. He cannot pass on unless he goes on this adventure to take down the big evil bad. His magic is not ordinarily the fire ball toting, lightning bolt conjuring classification, but he does have magic offensively, usually perhaps making use of animals, curses, and maybe even telekinesis.
