Billionaire Thomas Wayne and his wife Martha were leaving the cinema with their eight year old son Bruce after seeing a rerelease of The Mark of Zorro. As they were walking home, they took a detour through Crime Alley, and it was there that a two bit thug known as Joe Chill gunned them down in a botched robbery. Bruce's innocence died that night along with his parents. Something else filled the void. Bruce's childhood was spent being cared for by Alfred Pennyworth, the Wayne family butler who became Bruce's legal guardian and the head of the estate until Bruce was of age. Alfred tried his best to comfort the boy and help him move past the tragedy, but Bruce was consumed by it. He made it clear to Alfred that he wanted to learn how to fight so he could stop what happened to his parents happening to anyone else. Reluctantly, Alfred tapped into his years working as an agent for MI6 to teach Bruce combat and espionage, and as the boy grew older began to get him into contact with more people across the globe who could train him. At the age of 18, Bruce left Gotham behind to travel the world and train himself. In Canada, he met with retired martial artist Richard Dragon and trained with him for six months. Dragon attempted to impart his wisdom onto Bruce but the young man struggled to take it to heart. He continued globetrotting, spending several months to a year in one place and learning all he could from veteran martial artists, spies, engineers, and scientists. Across his travels, he heard rumors of a "League of Assassins", an ancient order based in the mountains of Tibet that were masters of combat and stealth. Bruce arrived in Tibet at the age of 25, and after weeks of searching, he met Ra's Al Ghul, the leader of the League who took him in and decided to train him. After a year, Bruce's training was at an end, and to become a member of the League he was brought to the League's headquarters in Tibet where he would be ordered to kill a man the League had captured. Bruce, unable to go through with it, instead turned on the League and fought his way out. He returned to Gotham, where he stalked the streets for a month pretending to be a drifter and learned as much as he could about the criminal underworld. One night, he confronted a pimp who was shaking down one of his girls for all the money she had. The girl was barely older than 13. He assaulted the pimp and as thanks the girl plunged a knife into his thigh. The police arrived and fired at Bruce, who narrowly escaped after taking a bullet to the gut. He found his way back to Wayne Manor, sitting in his father's study as he slowly bled out. Then, a bat burst through the window. The animal perched on a bust and stared at Bruce. Bruce stared back into its beady eyes. He knew what he had to become. That night, the Batman was born. Over the past eleven months, Batman has stalked the streets of Gotham striking fear into the hearts of criminals all over the city. Just last month, with the help of District Attorney Harvey Dent and GCPD lieutenant James Gordon, Batman took down Carmine Falcone and his drug operations, leaving a power vacuum in the city's criminal underworld. From Roman Sionis to Oswald Cobblepott, many of the city's top crooks are looking to swoop in and fill the gap Falcone left behind. P L O T ( S ) & G O A L ( S ) P L O T ( S ) & G O A L ( S ) Batman is one of my favorite superheroes ever. The Big Three: Batman, Spider-Man, and Superman, were my first introductions to superheroes as a child and I've loved all three ever since. I've never apped any of those characters in these games because I felt like I wasn't ready for the responsibility of shouldering an A-list character like that. Over time, however, I've grown as a writer and played the same two characters so many times that I've decided it's time for a change. This is a younger, more inexperienced Bruce. He's nearing the end of his first year as Batman and he's still trying to find his footing as a vigilante, still struggling with his inner demons that hold him back from becoming a true beacon of hope. My first arc will be entirely self-contained, detailing Batman's hunt for the serial killer Calendar Man. Once I've finished up my story there, I hope to invite anyone to come play ball in my park. I'm hoping that through interaction with other player characters and of course interactions with NPCs within my story that Bruce will grow as both a man and a symbol, learning to let go of his need for retribution and become a more altruistic force. |
