Rudolf Shilage

Shadows coiled tight and still, daring not to show their hand as the demonic jester hung above, a spot of black against the rising moon. Off at Esben's side, there was the muted slide of steel against leather— Rudolf repositioning himself, closer to arm's reach of the spy and just as much in the path of their pursuer as he could get away with, relative to their wounded, without being too overt. In truth? The assurance dripped off Ferdiad's posture enough that Rudolf didn't really believe any movement short of outright breaking their little ceasefire for repartee would set him off, but even so...

A flickering next to his soul, silent and sullen again. His passenger, naturally, had decided this was worth being cagey with— after all, they were at half strength at best right now, down their only sources of truly leverageable White Magic if whatever shared history the two demons reignited the feud in full... and with how thoroughly involved his contractor's presence was upon himself and his armor, anything more than that barest flicker was asking to set the whole potential powder keg off. Ferdiad had already come dangerously close to smelling the smoke on him once.

Even then, that disdainful twinge rippled out into a knot through the Edreni swordfighter's brow, an echo of the unspoken "do you see why I hate this prick?" that rode the tightness of his jaw. For Rudolf's part, he kept his own contributions low-voiced, brief, and suspicious as ever, given the subject.

"I'll throw the lecture back at you: Careful with him. Don't fall into his pace. I can just about reach most of us from here otherwise."

He made no effort to hide the bitter tone. Those with the usual objections were wisely keeping mum. He remained coiled, falling into relative silence thereafter. The cautions bore repeating in every instance; instructing boilierplate ideas like "try to tease out what the plan behind all this is" would be only self-serving belaborment of the point with the obvious.

Esben Mathiassen

As Ferdiad stopped chasing, Esben stopped running, spinning on his heel to face the demonic jester as he came to a halt and waved at the others to keep moving. In a moment, he ran through his memory of each time he'd summoned in either of the Eidolons—Ramuh against Famfrit, Leviathan against Reisa, Ramuh again against the Behemoth. Unless there were more of Valheim's eyes watching, then the only obvious witness was Sigursdottir. 'Threat estimation,' however, didn't quite line up with what Rudolf and Miina had relayed to him earlier from what she'd been saying about him, unless things had entirely changed on that front.

Still, he didn't want to leave any more to chance if he could when it came to his former tutor. "In the interest of fair play—name your patron, please." Not that he particularly expected Ferdiad to answer easily, but it was worth a shot.

"Fair play? You've not even made an offer yet! Half-measures will get half-answers. You're acquainted, mayhaps?"

"Offers? Call your patron here, let the others go on, and I'm offering you a better show than this jog behind us will give—assuming your interests go into drama." Precious few others he could consider himself acquainted with that might think to unleash such a creature, or might have any grudge to bear against Solitude in particular. "Other than that, these undead—your doing, some stolen Valheimer experiment that your patron unleashed alone, or just a happy accident? They don't seem to care you're there."

Ferdiad leaned in, fixing Esben with a leer.

"Oh? Heroic self-sacrifice, is it? Well I do so love a tragedy!" It tittered, body waving back and forth in its amusement. "Very well. Hold up to your end of the bargain. Stay right where you are, just in my sight, and you'll get to MEET mine ever-so-effusive contractor!"

An obvious trap, and one he intended to spring. "Sacrifice? Your words, not mine." Should this patron be as he expected, he had a semblance of a plan for dealing with what he may be getting himself into, to cut himself a way back out of the net. Should they be otherwise...Improvisation was a skill he prided himself on. Especially lately, given how rarely any of his plans could survive contact with his own allies, let alone the enemy. "And only if they come here. No transporting myself, no trickery, no magic that tries to draw my sense away from my body, I intend to converse with them on this particular rooftop. If that can't be guaranteed, there's no deal."

In lieu of words, Ferdiad snapped its fingers, sending a pulse of blackened aether up into the air. "Done! Now scurry and scatter, the rest of you. Lest you wish to waste your compatriot's noble gesture here. Gehehehehehe!"

Esben nodded at the rest of them, utterly unperturbed. Events would transpire as they would, one way or the other. "Ah, Ferdiad, while we wait—the undead?"

"Yes, yes. They've nothing to do with I or any other denizen of the deep. No, no, this horror is soley of man's making!"

"Mmm. Alex did always like to be showy, once she got her chance."

A beat.

"What did I just fucking tell you?"

For that sentence, the air around them all grew dry as the Ospreyan dunes. You could practically hear Rudolf's blood pressure spike— there was no doubt under whom his long tutelage had been fostered.

"Don't fall into his pace."

Esben reached into his cloak, scratching at a faint itch. Eos and Selene hovered near him, obviously uncomfortable with everything that was happening. "I prefer to think of it as him meeting mine, as it were. Or perhaps that we're marching to the beat of one drum. Do make sure Elly never forgets me, ja?"

The redhead watched the negotiation with almost perfect disinterest, given away only by the knife still playing between his fingers – but in the end, his attention was entirely on Esben, smiling once again but undeniably curious. "So, do all of you simply lack self-preservation? Or do you not feel fear at all?"

Though he didn't seem eager to stick around and wait for an answer, already balancing precariously on the edge of the roof, "Well, you heard the man-demon-clown thing, we should get going."

“Oh… okay. What the fuck,” Éliane found herself muttering under her breath, the single sentence encompassing all that had happened with whatever turn this was. At this point, she didn’t know whether or not to shoot the flares and disrupt whatever was going on or not because of how sheerly out of depth she felt. Unfortunately, when it came to the occult, demons, and nonsense like this… the pink-haired woman was completely useless. What she did know was that it felt like Esben was being very stupid. But he wasn’t wrong either.

Making a face as if she had bit into a sour lemon, she swiped her arm towards the Skaelan infantrymen that were still seconded to them.

“Go,” she hissed. “Follow Zeke. That’s an order. And you,” Éliane turned to the cat boy, “We’ll catch up soon. Keep them alive or it’ll be me and your sister having very strong words with you later.”

She made a shooing motion before immediately rounding on Esben. “Are you out of your godsdamned mind!?”

Esben withdrew his hand from his cloak, loosely-closed fist falling to his side. "Of course I'm not," he replied flatly. "But we don't have the luxury of time for me to prove I'm not, so you'll just have to trust me." He looked over at Zeke, starting to usher off the wounded soldiers in their tow.

"Trust me now, and keep trusting me later. Zeke alone won't be enough to keep them in one piece—without the three of you, they're dead, and he's gone. Get them and yourselves to a better spot and hold position, I shouldn't be too far behind."

I think I may have somehow begun hallucinating. Or perhaps I had fallen asleep on the flight and I will wake up. I do not believe one can feel pain within a dream, which I certainly did after the initial crash, but anything is a far better explanation then what I am witnessing at this very moment.

"What... what are you doing?!"

This cannot be his plan. There is no world in which this could possibly be his plan. I was perfectly ready to do everything I could to split that foul jester demon open even after it had dealt with my bomb.

What could Mathiassen-san possibly be thinking? What could be going through his head? I cannot even begin to guess.

Why do we need to do this? Why is any of this happening? What possible thought process could drive him to this? I thought was good at strategy before. What happened to that?

What is the strategy here, Mathiassen-san!?

Rudolf Shilage

"... He's buying us an opportunity, I'm afraid." a bitter, blackened voice drifted in, a layer of unwilling smoke over the back-and-forth. Rudolf, after his immediate admonishment, had fallen gravely quiet as the realities of the situation unfolded in his mind. He looked over their number thrice, coppery gaze weighing it all out... and finding them woefully, lethally out of balance.

It boiled at him. It boiled, but he kept the train of thought going. It was all but a necessary distraction, from the words tumbling end over end on the inside, from a snowy morning in a place north of here, the same that had earned him the blade he fought to force his grip away from.

"We have to face facts in this situation— And that starts with our relative strengths." The narrowed eyes shifted back, following Eliane's as they watched Zeke and the raiders begin to assemble, then to her, then finally to Chisato. "We're at half muster right now. We've more non-combatants to chaperone than those of us meant for a fight, and most of them fall into that category because they can't move freely."

Over to Ferdiad, dangling along his scythe without much care. The jongleur was a different beast to everything he'd thought he'd known about demonkind until last month— chief of all in not being a disembodied Shade, floating in the dark spaces of the ruins. But even that said, his elemental alignment with shadow, in the dead of night? It didn't matter how willing they were to presume that the question of sunlight weakening him could be thrown out by his new tangible form— you'd still rather fight Leviathan on land, rather than open sea. There was no principal difference in these two concerns.

"As he tails us, he'll be able to slip in and out of shadow where we have to rely on traversing the rooftops the way we have. He can strike from any angle on a dark night like tonight once he arbitrarily decides the jig is up— nipping at our heels, forcing us to make hasty choices, adding one more layer of cut-off routing we'll need to contend with. He could either steer us right into a waiting snare... Or begin picking the soldiers under our care off one by one. You all saw what we were dealing with back in Lunaris."

A long ride, on the order of two, three hours down from Falcon's Nest. Their initial scuffle with the unwitting troops that were tailing Zeke hadn't been terribly strenuous— but it and the crash landing that had come on its' heels both ate into their resources. Then their extended stint of roof-hopping. All told, they were nearing on five, six hours since they'd made haste from the fortress city—

His jaw, questionably helpfully, throbbed as a cool breeze found its way through the metal of his helm. That, too, had been a quick turnaround— unless any of them had caught a wink of sleep on the airship? It had only been half a day since they had tangled with Garland, and found their full strength thoroughly matched. For as much as Rudolf had grown to trust his own stamina and powers of recuperation... His gaze towards the other three was skeptical, behind the impassive visage of the helmet.

"All seven of us, fresh and fully-equipped, couldn't put him away in a straight fight. At noon. Without more people to look after, try and protect, and spread our own attention thin." He felt his stomach turn, but kept his voice as measured as he could. This was the truth. None of these things were incorrect observations. The current of logic underpinning each was sound, which was why...

"As we are now, getting into outright combat would be hopeless. He'll be tireless in the dead of night, we've been on the move all day."

It felt an impossible thing, the way chains could twist around your neck right when you believed them to only tie your hands. When he had accepted the new line of steel on his back, he knew it came with more weight than the physical— even if he'd rushed into it, he knew better than to take an oath of protection lightly.

"Further, now that he's called this patron of his in, we would have the both of them to deal with unless we make ourselves scarce. They get here before then, and deal's off."

Hardly all that long ago that Eliane had... no, no. She'd proven herself to be basically over that bullet to the spine. Don't get distracted by the unlikely. The main issue was that Loki's fondness for thrown knives and high mobility would make quick work of their hangers-on— and provide split-second distractions that Ferdiad could use to really hurt the Kirins with that scythe. It wasn't all that dissimilar to the dynamic he and Miina had forced the turncoat to contend with in Drana Asnaeu. All the more reason to pull them away from it— he knew the efficacy.

"This is a chance for us to get some distance between them and ourselves while he has them both distracted— get these men somewhere safe. Be it the church or elsewhere, we need to go while the window's open."

Metal dug into leather. His hand opened and closed, reflexively, as the helmet's visor stared at the spy bidding them away. There had to be something else. Surely. Something he couldn't see. Something that didn't enshrine the same base impulse that he had fought so hard to beat down and suffocate— that he could fulfill his oaths honestly.

'I'm sick of hiding', he had said. 'I'm sick of running.', he had meant. He had already abandoned one person to their fate too many in his life. She was with Danube and the stars now. Knowing what he knew, very well, of demons like this? Of Loki, who was supposedly a more experienced version of Esben himself save that same rational underpinning that he had followed through to here? How could it not feel the same?

'Be willing to sacrifice your own honor.'

'Honor is the refuge of the strong. I can scuttle it if it means seeing us home.'

Imir damn you both... Surely, neither of us quite meant this.

He half-turned, blading himself, ready to go if he had a prayer of getting the logic through to the other two's heads. He jaw worked quietly, keeping them both in view as best he could. If it came to it... he probably could force the issue. But at what point was that the right call, and at what point did you cut your losses and reconsolidate? If he managed to intercept a drawn firearm before it went off, in most negotiations the act of chambering the round still meant all bets were de-facto off.

Suppose they did go along with this.

Who stepped up for directive then?

His head was awash... Over his right shoulder, the visor's gaze shifted forward, one more time.

"I do need to make one thing clear: I'm going to wring your neck for this."

Now that they were moving away from the bizarre clown… thing, there was plenty of time for the thief to think over everything that had just played out. Oh, it was clear Esben was buying them time – either planning to make his own escape or hoping that the group would be able to come back and rescue them later – but that was hardly interesting. Important, certainly; especially if they decided that it was time to mount a rescue before there were reinforcements. His skills would be much more useful there, along with the little ninja that had been so unexpectedly agitated.

But the tension in the group… some of it was strictly professional; the Edreni swordsman for instance with all his breakdown of their obvious risk. Though that was another interesting connection that Zeke had to wonder about; there was a feel of black magic about him – weaker now than when they'd met – that seemed oddly similar to the one they were running from. Better to ask about when he wasn't being a rearguard. The little Viera, too, only seemed to have a professional interest…

But the Skaelan officer, there was something interesting. A lingering feeling that maybe both of them wanted to say something more? Something that there wasn't time for, or that they didn't know how to put into words?

Now wasn't the 'right' time to ask about something like that, but it was probably the most fun. Éliane would be the least guarded for it just from the worry alone. Slip back just a bit to be in easy conversational range, just far enough away to have time to avoid being shot if she took it badly.

"So… I'm thinking you should probably ask him out when he gets back? Very stupid, very heroic – and he's not bad looking at all. Why, you never know who might take an interest~"

Did he put too much emphasis on that last part? Ah well.
