Edged Horizon

In the end, the fruits of their efforts bore only ashes, and she stood alone on the mountain of glass.

The goliaths advanced, each step causing another fracture, another fissure over the last testament of their struggle.

It wouldn't last. What they protected no longer existed, and what they fought for no longer mattered.

A final sigh left her body, as both hands wrapped around a black sword.

No. A black Key.

There was nothing left.

But even then, she would not surrender.

"One last time."

●●●●

A mere 15 years ago, the Jeualian Empire, a military powerhouse, rampaged through the lands on an unchallenged conquest. With towering war machines and weaponry fifty years ahead of its time, there were no countries that could stand up against them. With unbelievable ease, the red flag of the Jeaulian Empire was planted over half of the kingdoms, principalities, and city-states on the continent. The people were subjugated, their cultures homogenized, and soon, they too became part of the gears that moved the Empire.

It was at the halfway point, however, that the unwavering armies of the Empire were forced to halt. For, in the southern half of the continent laid three nations that, together, could indeed challenge the Empire’s sovereignty. Joining arms in the face of a common foe, the theocracy of Astopol, the monarchy of Illiserev, and the democracy of Dansila marched under a common flag, led by the Knight-Commander, Mirelle Keep. Even the monsters of Talze Utera joined in the war effort, as the Elders of the Scarlet Court put aside their feud with Astopol to feast on the blood of the Empire.

For months on end, the armies clashed, a hail of iron met by a hail of magic, every ambush reciprocated, every defeat paid for in blood. The land turned into ash, as conflagrations marred the battlefield. The wastelands became marshes, soil tainted with lifeblood. Over and over again, the war was waged, a mountain of corpses growing as the days passed on.

But the difference in resources was slowly becoming clear. The war machine of the Empire was powered by the hundreds of nations that they’ve conquered, while the defensive war waged by the coalition left their own lands razed. In a final, desperate offensive, all the armies of the coalition decided to strike head-on, signing a suicide pact that had no chance of victory.

On that day, as war hymns were sung and good byes were said, humans became the horizon, as two massive armies met on opposite sides.

With a selfless, selfish charge, the Knight-Commander led the horde of metal and flesh into her final large-scale confrontation with the Jeualian Empire.

●●●●●

And then, just a little bit, the world cracked.

A soul-trembling sound broke over the horizon, as the sky shattered. From the darkness, never-before-seen monsters fell onto the barren fields like mud. And, just as incoherently as they came, those beings attacked, mindlessly lashing out at both sides. Incidents of these popped up all over the continent, as tears in the skies heralded the coming of these alien beings. Unable to fight a war on two fronts, especially with the majority of their forces concentrated in foreign land, the Empire retreated, closing off its borders with massive walls.

Their retreat was both the end of the war, and the beginning of a new one. Massive civilian casualties were incurred as these monsters, dubbed ‘rift-beasts’, appeared at random, rampaging through even the most heavily-fortified cities. They did not respond to any attempt at communication, and could not be stopped by anything less than high-class magic spells. A thoughtless, mindless, merciless enemy that acted with no purpose other than to attack.

Talze Utera was the first to disperse, seeking amnesty in the miasma that was their home.

The Coalition quickly broke apart, selfishly defending the well-being of their own kingdoms. The rift-beasts were not an enemy that could be defeated by a ‘combined’ force, and soon, all friendly relationships broke down between Dansila, Astopol, and Illiserev. No charity existed between them, and they crumbled under their own inability to eliminate these alien threats. Already weakened by their battles against the Jeualian Empire, the kingdoms fell into anarchy as the unknown monsters continued their senseless onslaught.

●●●●●

It was in that dark hour, known as the ‘Talentless Strife’, that a special material named ‘Talentium’ was discovered.

Extracted from the bodies of dead rift-beasts, it was a ghostly metal that could be forged into a weapon stronger, sharper, and more durable than any past crafting material. Furthermore, though, Talentium was a metal that resonated with the will of the wielder. A mage would find themselves capable of achieving magical feats they’d never have dreamed of, while a swordsman would find themselves filled with strength that was beyond human.

With the first sword crafted by the Dansilan prodigy, Alier Velone, and wielded by the Astopolian captain, Aiv Recourt, it finally appeared that the rift-beasts could be driven back. Each encounter and victory brought forth more Talentium, and thus, allowed for more soldiers to gain the power necessary to fight off those amorphous monsters. Slowly, but surely, the coalition stood as one again. Knights, mages, soldiers, pilots, all people from all three nations worked together, scattering themselves to respond quickly to any rift-appearances.

Step by step, the Talentless Strife gave way to the March of Light.

In the end, through the valiant efforts of Mirelle Keep, who single-handedly dispatched a thousand rift beasts that poured out from north of Astopol, and Aiv Recourt, who slew the World-Eater, the rift-beast large enough to blot out the sun, the three nations could breathe easily once more. Rifts began to appear less, and the advent of Talentium had accelerated their living standards remarkably.

It was an era of peace, of training, of development, as fallow fields were tended to, as the lands were restored to their past glory. It was a time of rest, broken only by the few rift-beasts that appeared, and the residents of Talze Utera that hunted.

But such tranquility could not persist.

Not in a world that tore itself apart.

For the accursed wheel continues to turn, even when reset.

For individual fates continue to convene, even when untangled.

For the Man in Red continues to move..

His progress is unmade.

But his purpose remains.

All for the sake of Kana.

This is an interest check. That's why there's only backstory and edgy fluff. I have a whole bunch of other information ready, but that's mainly for the actual OOC.

This is a fantasy RP as well, and I'm looking for a minimum of five to a maximum of ten players. These players should be able to post at least once a week, and should be able to roll with the plot, as well as enjoy the suffering of their characters. Think of this as an anime. You're totally gonna shed blood, lose sanity and do crazy shit during the RP.

You will also be playing as semi-badasses. Know that your character will be at least above average in terms of combat ability (enough that normal people can't talk shit to you), but also note that they aren't going to be top-tier or even high-tier. As for the types of characters you'll have...you can either go classic Talentium-wielding melee dude, a monster of your choice, or the pilot of an ancient mech. I'm a fan of magic and close combat, so yep.

Feel free to ask questions. I love that sort of shit.

I'm assuming you mean playable monsters.

The two major factions of power in Talze Utera are the vampires and the witches. The vampires have a ruling council called the Scarlet Court, headed by various centuries-old vampires, while the witches have more or less 4 different covens, one for each direction on the compass.

You can also just do whatever monster you want, as long as you pass the idea through me first. No demons/angels though.

@ERode i was thinking a Draugr, which is a type of sentient undead in Norse lore, there big thing was that the where spirits that wanted to seek revenge in their un life enough that they manged to get back in there bodies, though the body was basically a undead husk of its old self, i am flexible with how you want to set it up to be fair and have a reasonable backstory, i am thinking a witch as trying to raise an undead army in secret back when she tried to bring make a powerful undead of a long forgotten hero she brought back his soul and placed it in his rotten body, she escapes just leave it behind in anger of being forced back into life, he remembers little of either his old life or of the after life other then his name, how to fight, and that in death he was happier then in life, for the record i like to change two things about Draugr, one he can be outside out day time and two he would be as killable as a normal zombie ie, fire or crushing his head kills him and anything that heals a living thing hurts him, though for the lols, sort of that he can reattach any cut off body part with the aid of magic such as any from of magic that would be lethal to living things heals him

I'm fine with that sort of character. Always did like the semi-immortal type. How does he function in regard to the timeline though? Big war being 15 years ago and all that? Though it personally doesn't make sense for me that he'd be able to 'heal' through magic that damages people. Can imagine that poisons and such won't be too effective against him, but it's not gonna heal him. If he loses his limbs and such, I'd say he can reattach them due to how his undead body functions (e.g the magic that the witch used). To confirm, his heart doesn't beat or anything like that, right? It's purely magical, how he physically moves?

Also, just so you're aware, heroes from the past are weaker than heroes in the present.

@ERode well one he was likely a captain of one of the armies that thought in that war, though he cant remember which side, and fair enough, was thinking of d&d stuff when i said that, no he is a zombie basically held together by magic, for the sake of the rp he can move normally as when he was alive, the thing about hero's is fine, i didn't want him to be super strong

I mean, that war was only 15 years ago. If he actually mattered, he probably wouldn't be much of a 'long forgotten' hero. Also, to confirm, are you typing this on a phone or whatever? Cause that's one hell of an incomplete run-on sentence.

@Bigg Slamm
A monk with Talentium armor magically infused to his limbs? Explain what you mean by magically infused.

basically his skin would be replaced with scales of talentium elbow to fist and knee to foot for balence reasons of course. basically giving him a way to punch the rift monsters in the face and cause damage. so basically talentium gaunlents and greives he cant take off.

but for the feet too

@ERode sorry, was I the middle of something when I was typing that. So I rushed the sentence a little. I see your point though, long forgotten hero mayou have been a stretch, how about someone who died that sort of had a foot note in history, like he died defending people escaping the war. And due to his new look of undeath people don't recognize him or know is name very well as he can only remember some of it.

@Bigg Slamm
If it's just skindeep it can get physically torn off, because it's really only connected to his flesh. Also, shit like that's gonna hurt like a bitch, and talentium doesn't really have the elasticity of flesh. It'd probably fuck up the muscles beneath as well. Is there a particular reason why he would go through such an agaonizing process when, yeah, he COULD just be wearing talentium gauntlets and greaves?

@Jackson monty
Escape doesn't really make sense considering how there's nowhere to escape to, but I see what you mean by that. I'm fine with it. When did he get resurrected?

@erode that's where the "magically infused" part comes in and why i said it would be scaled. magic so it wouldnt tear off so easily and scaled for manuverability. also as a monk he would be part of a monestary (now long lost and him the last of his sect) and as part of his final right of passage he was to endure the process (which not many do). as for not wearing actual gauntlets and greaves, they'd way him down. monks are meant to be fast and flexible. then again i could be over thinking it and your magic space metal has the strengh of titanium and the weight of carbon fiber. IDK *shrugs* :P
