The submission period is over, so it's time to get to the voting and critiquing! All the relevant rules can be found below, but check out the general Rules and Info thread for more and to leave any comments or suggestions on the contest as a whole. The theme for the inaugural Monthly Adaptive Storytelling Contest was...

WOTM Throwback

Before getting to the actual entries, here's a quick recap of the prompt our entrants were asked to fulfill and below that the voting rules.

Theme: Mythology

Write a story involving a myth. Myths cover a WIDE variety of things, usually explaining traditions, historical events, or natural phenomenon. Check out Greek, Norse, Egyptian, etc. myths if you aren't familiar with what sorts of topics myths cover.

Components: Use at least two of these in your story.
  • The protagonist of the story is a villain.
  • The story involves one character trying to trick or deceive another character.
  • The myth does not involve gods.
  • The myth explains a technological advancement as the result of supernatural events rather than mortal ingenuity. (Note: things like the invention of the wheel to the creation of the first spaceship both count as technological advancements.)
  • The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic setting.

Extra Challenges: These are optional. The entry that best fulfills each extra challenge (as decided by @Jorick) will be highlighted after the voting period ends.
  • Overachiever: Use all five components in your entry.
  • Mic Drop: Have a character deliver a devastating insult to another character.
  • Artist: Use your words to paint a mental picture of a vividly detailed setting.

Voting Rules:

1. Submit your vote by posting in the voting thread before the deadline: before midnight (in US time zones) on August 16th.
2. Submissions are posted anonymously for a reason. Revealing which entry was yours before the voting period is over will result in disqualification.
3. Contest entrants cannot vote for their own entry but are invited to vote for a competitor's entry.
4. Comments on and critiques of the entries are highly encouraged, but do keep in mind that criticism should be constructive rather than destructive.
5. The entry with the most votes in the end will be declared the winner. @Jorick will also highlight those who did the best job tackling each extra challenge.
6. All site and contest moderation rules are of course in effect.

And without further ado, the entries:

Just for the sake of clarity and transparency, I've just updated the entry named Buckriders. I got bamboozled by PMs not having the little notation at the top saying a post has been edited, so I didn't realize the version of the entry I'd grabbed the night before I posted this thread ended up being edited in the extra day that was given.

I've read the entries and here is my vote:

A Country In Ruins

As for feedback: I wish I could give detailed critiques about technical writing, grammar and spelling etc but I am too inexperienced myself to do so. However, I can tell which entry I liked best based on how I enjoyed reading it, how easy it was to read, how the story progressed and how intrigued I got by the myth in it.

Based on those criteria I felt A Country In Ruins is the better one therefor that entry gets my vote.

I was on vacation and couldn't write any feedback. I did read the entries and because there is a voting deadline here I'm going to place my vote for the Buckriders now. I will add in some feedback later and I will also go into more detail why the other entries didn't get my vote. I can say that the original approach of the story by alternating letters and the actual story was a nice touch and I enjoyed that.

Alright, a bit slow on the draw on my part, but the contest is over!

Unfortunately there were only a couple votes (more on that later), but we'll work with what we've got. The tied winners of this first run of MASC are:

@Salenea's entry Buckriders and @Calle's entry A Country in Ruins. You voted for each other, as it turns out.

For the optional challenges, nobody used all the prompt options. I'll give the Mic Drop accolade to A Country in Ruins, specifically for the water nymph saying "I thought you knew better" about Mikhal wandering off the path and almost getting drowned. Perhaps not intended as an insult by the character (or maybe the author), but it struck me as an unintended sick burn about his intellect. The Artist kudos goes hands down to A Matter of Perspective, with many great descriptions that painted a vivid picture in my mind as I read it. The final part, with Julie starting to crumble into nothing, was especially excellent.

There will be a Hall of Fame thread put up in just a couple minutes, and our tied winners will have their entries showcased their. The third entrant can reveal their identity or remain anonymous as they so choose. Although voting is closed, people are still welcome to give some feedback and reviews on the entries.

Also, due to the less than inspiring level of participation in this first month of the contest, I'll be considering some changes to the timing. Next MASC will run on the same 4 week schedule (and the prompt will be up on Friday the 23rd), but the schedule may change after that. There'll be announcements in the Rules and Info thread as needed. Also, if anyone reading this has any thoughts on what might be done to improve participation, feel free to throw them at me here or in a PM!

This is a vacation period, so maybe that is why there was a low level of participation. The other writing contest also had 3 entries.

But I enjoyed the theme, thanks for hosting it.

I'm working on the feedback, but since I'm also behind with my RP's due to the vacation it's going slowly.

I'd intended to vote, but a splinter on deciding the ultimate choice and a general surplus of other things needed to be done left me only checking in now, of course too late.

I fully intended to vote, but the deadline passed me by with everything else going on.

I'm glad someone mentioned the other contest though, I didn't see the voting thread for that one go up.
