In Star Trek there are three levels of shielding. You have the combat shields, the anti-personnel and atmospheric force fields and structural integrity fields that help hold the ship together and prevent explosive decompression chains. That is, in addition, to the empty vacuum that they keep between the decks.
ctOS Personal Information Keeper

Name Sarah Covernry
Online Alias: "Tryst"
Gender Female
Age 19
Occupation: Prostitute, Part-Time Computer Science Student

Personality: Sarah is fairly selfish and more than a bit cowardly. In case of fire, she has no compunctions against knocking the little old lady over in order to be first one out of the building. That's not to say she is unkind or unfriendly. Being friendly can reap a great many rewards come the harvest. It's all a matter of investment. She definitely doesn't see anything wrong with a little altruism provided it's profitable.

Background Sarah did poorly in school, expecting her fine figure and attractive appearance to get her through life. Her parents were consistently disappointed. They expected her to get a decent job... and show some financial appreciation for her upbringing. Like parents, like daughter. Then when she graduated high school without any real prospects her parents threw her out of the house.

Turning to stripping and then to prostitution Sarah soon began to hear of the criminal element in the city that used computers to perform all manner of crime. After all, what was the first thing a fixer or hacker did with their ill gained loot? They partied! Now that was an education with prospects she understood. First taking online courses, she then branched out into day classes. She then used her street name for her online name on various forums.

Important Notes Sarah is not part of any particular hacker group as of yet. She has made numerous searches for "ctOS vulnerabilities", "Dead_Sec". "Seg_Fault", "Daemons" and "System Key" from her mobile device with a spoofed IP. She's new to the game but not stupid.

Thank you for putting your information in, Sarah Covenry,. ctOS will protect your personal information and ensures you that none will hack into your electrical items!
V’Lar stood in the midst of the wreckage of the Archer’s bridge with the apathetic air only a Vulcan could maintain. She stared out at into empty space through the ten foot gap in the bridge’s hull, the lavender energy shield holding in the atmosphere glimmering faintly, plasma bursting in small blooms around the edges of the torn Duranium-Tritium composite hull.

The first officer, Fabian Cortez, an American of Columbian decent, meanwhile, was looking at the science station’s controls. The ship was a wreck. They had barely survived their escape from the tower. The antimatter reactor was down as were the fusion reactors. They were effectively running off of batteries. Communications, sensors, warp drive, transporters, replicators and shields were down. Weapons may as well have been as they didn’t have enough power to do much of anything. Unfortunately, damage control systems were inoperable. Without power to the replicator and transporter systems they couldn’t beam out the broken components and transport in replacements. Everything had to be done by hand.

Their chief engineer, an Edoan named Apex, was working on cobbling together power from the shuttles and connecting the main computer to the shuttles that possessed transporters and replicator systems. They weren’t as powerful but could help repair critical systems that were exposed to space.

“There are ships in near orbit,”, V’Lar observed, starting out the hole in the hull, “Perhaps we should request aid.”

“I rather suspect,” Fabian answered, looking at the displays before them and considering where best to concentrate their efforts of restoring the ship, “that there should be little doubt to anyone out there that we might need help.”

There was something to Fabian’s voice, a hardness. He was filled with anger. He was frustrated and upset and there was nothing he could do to relieve himself of these emotions at the moment. He put his hand through the mess of curls atop his head and then back down the closely shaved sides. He was also feeling some degree of anger towards these ships that V’Lar had mentioned. If they didn’t want to help they could simply go to hell.

“You presume that all cultures follow your Federation code of morals,” V’Lar countered, “Warrior cultures like the Klingon would not interfere in a test of survival unless invited to do so.”

There was a long drawn out silence. Fabian clenched and unclenched his fist.

“Perhaps you are right,” Fabian finally agreed, “Maybe we can get a shuttle ready. At the very least we can use its sensors to do a limited reconnaissance and to make contact.”

“Unfortunately, there is no reaching either of the shuttle bays from here.”

“Blast!” Fabian cursed, then tapped his communications badge which, fortunately, was one thing that mostly worked, “Cortez to Covenry. I need a shuttle mission. Reconnoiter and make contact with nearby vessels.”
Arla's brown eyes followed Cor's movements, noting many of the small things that he did though she didn't quite grasp the reasons for them. Pulling back on controls caused the metal bird to fly upwards, pushing forwards made it dive. Then Cor pushed forwards on the controls with abandon and the metal bird dropped so fast that she was pressed back into her seat.

Seeing the canyon walls so close to the window, the rippling uneven wall moving by so fast that it seemed like a unbroken sheet of red and brown. Despite herself, Arla found she was curling up in the co-pilot's seat, almost as if she expected that they were going to plow into the ground.
The elven woman attached a curved dagger to her waist and led the mercenaries out the door and into the clearing at the base of the tower. The grass was soft beneath her bare feet and the sun shone down gloriously from it's perch atop the azure sky. The sun's rays gleamed off of her long blond tresses, looking very much like burnished gold. The brilliant sun also shone through her ebony silks, revealing slender limbs that were only half visible in the murky primitive lamplight of the tower's interior.

"A Hydra," the sorceress explained, "is a large lizard that can often grow as massive as a small castle. It possesses anywhere up to nine heads and can grow two in its place should you behead one. Some have even been known to breath fire. Being a lizard they are drawn to warmth and love to lounge on hot rocks. One may have been drawn to the wreckage of your sky bird.

"Come, the sky bird is this way."
No, there are quite a number of computers that are isolated from wireless and internet for various reasons. The USAF's secret space shuttle was kept a secret for quite a long time because articles related to it were never placed on DARPAnet. Then there was the stealth boat, the one you see them use in the Bond film, "Tomorrow Never Dies" called the "Stealth Shadow" and nobody knew that thing existed until it sailed out into the harbor, even people that lived next door to where it was being constructed.

One of the rare few movies to get hacking right was "Live Free or Die Hard". The hacker character in that explained that many key infrastructural systems for power generation and the like are completely offline. That's why they had to kill several guards and go there directly.

In an autonomous vehicle, it's highly likely that the core systems are going to be firmware and that they only way to access them would be through a custom proprietary port like a USB but only available from the car manufacturer. The actual internet in your car would be handled via a completely separate computer. I mean, think about it, why would you want a car that needed the internet to drive? If there was a power outage every car in the area would immediately go dead.

There are some thing you just don't bring online. For example, when I was playing Shadowrun and playing a Street Samurai I had my assault rifle which was chipped and had an awesome firewall thanks to my "hacker" ally but I still carried a good old fashioned mechanical .454 Casull Magnum revolver for those special occasions.
...
First thing I'm going to point out is that I understand that there isn't going to be any autonomous vehicles.

Second, I would appreciate if people learned how to read. I specifically said, "company vehicles like delivery trucks". If your fixer were stupid enough to own or jack an autonomous vehicle and was hacked by another they fixer they deserve what they got.

Thirdly, based off the following and mostly as an aside and not at all Watch Dogs related:

Self driving cars are a bad thing, due to:Programmers are constantly fucking up creating code that is destructiveWhen there is an accident, the car manufacturer is going to do it's absolute best to railroad you and not pay you for damages and it will be twice as bad when it is two or more manufacturersHackers

This previous statements are pure misinformation.

We're talking about a system that makes hundreds of decisions a second and an correct for the occasional one in a billion mathematical error on the next decision. Ninety percent of all car accidents are driver error. Worse, it is far more likely for a good driver to be killed by a bad driver than a bad driver is to be killed by a good driver. This is REVERSE Darwinism. Think about it. What is more likely, a bad driver t-boning a good driver or a good driver t-boning a bad driver? Good drivers are more likely to have accidents that are within the design tolerances of their vehicles.

Additionally, we're talking about a nearly unhackable system. You'd need physical access to the car, time to disassemble it and then put it back together. If someone wants to get you that badly whether you car is hackable or not is not an issue. This person will find a means to get at you another way.

Finally, the legal issues are non-existent. The lawyers haven't had opportunity to get involved in this arena yet. There literally is no precedent. The statement also ignores the fact that autonomous vehicles contain black boxes with time tracked decision processes and matching video.

No, no, no, no, no.... Please no... I agree with the DT's, but... 2014 works, one year after Watch_Dogs. We can actually start in 2014 and then (if RP survives the beggining, then nothing can stop it) make a timeskip, let's just start... Yeah, sure we can use drones, but A.I. driving? I think thats an overkill.Edit: Just thought of a compromise, I remember somebody mentioning that the story would take place in ARCs - So, each arc would take place some time in between (ranging from 4-12 months to even 2 years). Let's say we start in 2014 and end in somewhere 2026-2031

VI driving is available now in real life and drives better than people. It has a few drawbacks, like being unable to resolve bicyclists but that was solved by Google some months back. Not using it is killing one United States citizens every eight minutes!

In truth, I'm surprised they're not in the game already. Not every vehicle for certain but some delivery trucks on repetitive routes I can certainly see.
We could also have this set slightly in the future with a 2.0 CTos. Nothing huge. Self driving cars and delivery trucks for instance, flying quad copter drones instead of CT scans. (Ie. The drones don't constantly patrol, just come out when an area needs additional surveillance.)

Can you imagine ammunition deliveries by drone from your favorite local gun shop? How about beer and taco?
