Matt stood there examining the playing field. If Josh brought the armored unit up the left side even two more inches he would flank Matt’s Goliath. More than likely Josh was trusting in the dice though to win the day. It would be risky but Matt had already determined that Josh preferred risky tactics and had come to rely on that.

“Good luck, you sure want to do that? The odds aren’t exactly in your favor.” Matt offered a way out but Josh just nodded and went to the assault phase. They had been playing for four hours already.

Daniela had lost track of the woman she was following. As she ran by one of the open doors, she stopped as she saw a familiar face. “Matt!” She called out cheerfully as she ran in and saw that he was playing some sort of miniature game with little figures. Daniela was barely able to stand still as she stared at the little figures. “Oh! I recognize that one! It’s a little alien guy!” She stopped for a moment and looked around curiously as though she was unsure as to how she had gotten into the room. “Hey, was this room always here? Don’t really remember it.”

Matt looked up from the game. Seeing the puzzled look on Daniela’s face, he turned to Josh “Uh Josh I’m willing to call it here. Good game. Just looks like my friend here needs me.” Josh signed “No worries.” and started packing up.

“Daniela you alright? Yeah it’s the common room. Always been here. You need to eat or talk or talk and eat? What’s going on?”

Daniela once again paused and looked around for a moment as though she didn’t know what was going on. She stared at Matt with a slightly off smile. The smile vanished a moment later as tears began to form in her eyes and her mouth opened but no sound emerged as her arms and hands began to glow brighter and brighter as though her abilities were beginning to emerge. “M-Matt...Help me.”

Matt cautiously approached Daniela, his voice mildly placating. “uhm … Sparkles … if you zap me I will be quite upset. Now calm down and talk to me.” Checking that his gloves were on he tried to give Daniela a reassuring hug.

Daniela looked at Matt as she started laughing hysterically and sobbing heavily at the same time. “C-Can’t control it this time! Can’t stop it! S-Somethings wrong!” She screamed as a moment later, massive twin blasts of electricity blasted out from her hands in a display of power beyond her control. She barely had enough time to turn away from Matt and direct one of the blasts at an electrical outlet and the other hit a window behind them and shattered the window and blasted the glass outward.

Matt’s eyes widened. As the lights went out, it became apparent that Daniela couldn’t stop this on her own. Matt only knew one way to stop her. Taking off his glove he reached out to grab her arm just above the glow. Both of them seemed to stop frozen in place. Matt’s Aura expanded, changing the surroundings to match the memory of Daniela’s most vividly traumatic moment. Matt had no control over what was seen and he considered it an invasion of privacy but there was no choice. He could not allow her to destroy the room. Besides, his miniatures were in danger.

Daniela looked around in horror as the familiar sight and sounds that still haunted her dreams seemingly began to appear all around her. She could see the destroyed van crushed beneath the debris of the damaged building and see Andrea’s hand limply hanging out from the side. She could hear the battle raging around her as villains and so-called ‘heroes’ continued to duke it out in the middle of the crowded street. And oddly enough, she could see herself trapped beneath the power pole screaming in fear as the two groups fought it out, regardless of the civilian casualties that would ensue. “No...NO!” She screamed over in both rage and terror as she watched as the aspiring heroes were cut down and one of the surviving villains loomed over her with the sadistic smile that haunted her nightmares still. “No survivors.” He said to the woman under the power pole with a sadistic smile as Daniela standing next to Matt, began sobbing once again. “Why? Why am I here?!”

“This must be what’s bothering you. Some unresolved issue or something. We can only observe though.” Matt said as the scene played out before him. He couldn’t help but notice that the “heroes” didn’t work together and paid little mind to their surroundings. He watched the real Daniela as she watched on in horror. What is it about this moment? Yes, it is traumatic losing a friend would be, but there seems to be something I am missing. Matt spotted someone else trying to run from the scene. Then watched as a live wire jumped around and headed towards the trapped Daniela.

“Because you're a murderer!” Daniela’s disembodied voice came from nowhere.

Daniela could only watch as tears began to run down her face once again as the wire touched her back and a moment later, the trapped Daniela’s eyes immediately flashed a blinding yellow as a massive blast of electricity erupted from her straight into her would-be-killer and she could only watch as as his body seemingly turned a charred black in front of her. Mere moments later, arcs of electricity shot out from her glowing form. She forced herself to watch as one of the blasts struck Hannah directly in the back as she tried running away and two electrical blasts slammed into nearby civilians who were trying to run away.

“You deserve to rot in a cell for the rest of your miserable life for what you did! You killed the only two who understood you! Your only two friends!”

“I didn’t mean to kill them!” She sobbed

Matt’s mental presence went to hug Daniela. “You need to stop beating yourself up. None of this was in your control. It was unfortunate but there was nothing else you could do.” Matt looked around and sympathetically chuckled. “You had no more control over that, than I have over this. Which by the way is probably going to repeat if you don’t forgive yourself at least a little.”

"What right do you have to think you deserve forgiveness?!" Daniela’s disembodied voice demanded in an accusing scream.

Daniela shook her head as the tears began to slowly stop. “I don’t know how I’m ever going to fully accept it. I didn’t want to hurt anyone...I just wanted to have a road trip with my friends and look how it ended.” She said quietly as she fell to her knees and shook her head. “Those four deaths will always be with me.”

Matt put a finger on Daniela’s mouth. “Of course they will, no one is asking you to forget them, but you need to realise that you are not to blame for those deaths. It is like being in a car accident as a passenger and blaming yourself for surviving. Your body did what it had to do to survive. The fact that it bothers you this much and you have held onto it for so long tells me that much. I trust you enough to literally be inside your head. Now that should tell you something.”

Daniela looked over the battleground and looked at the various casualties and shook her head after a moment. She took a deep breath and struggled to express herself for a few moments as everything seemed to slow down for her for a moment. “Goodbye.” She said quietly.

As Matt’s Aura receded feeling came back into his body. Josh stood there wide eyed. Neither Matt nor Daniela were even aware he was still there until now. Josh’s hands flashed out at Matt.

“Slow down Josh I’m still learning.” Matt exclaimed as he put his glove back on. “I see the lights are still out. I think she is alright for now.”

The dull thrum of consciousness quickly became a pounding headache, which seemed to pulse with every heartbeat. The more Charles became aware, the worse it became. Opening his eyes definitely did not help matters and made him nauseous as well. He decided to leave his eyes closed for now. Mixed with a high pitched ringing in his ears he heard a quick shuffle as a chair fell away and what sounded like a waste bin being overturned.

“Buckets on your left. You have a concussion. Whatever compelled you to form a bell over yourself is beyond me, but we most likely wouldn’t be having this discussion if you hadn’t.” The words seemed rushed and almost chiding. The voice was unfamiliar but Charles assumed it must belong to a medical professional given his current state. Leaning to the left and feeling for the bucket Charles vomited.

“Thank you. What is the prognosis?”

“Well the MRI was good so no permanent damage. A couple more minutes and you should be able to open your eyes without throwing up. Then a quick subscription for the headaches and you should get something light to eat. Then I prescribe you stay awake for at least six hours and use this to contact me if there are any problems.” With that she put something in his hand. It felt simple enough just a small egg shaped device with a single button.

A couple minutes passed feeling like hours. Charles opened his eyes. The room seemed bright but the nausea did not come back. The nurse stood there with sunglasses and his prescription.

“Okay take these as needed but no more than one every two hours. Oh and I wouldn’t go around using your powers until your head is on straight again.” She stated simply, although her face showed that she didn’t think he would listen.

“Thank you again.” Donning the sunglasses and taking a painkiller. Charles unsteadily made his way to the door. “I am still a little disoriented is this normal?”

“That should pass but not completely until you have eaten something.”

Armed with this information Charles headed to the cafeteria. The idea of eating still made him queasy but mixed with how hungry he was; Charles hoped they had soup.

This a Special Global News Report on Mutants

Hello I’m Michael Davrom for Global News. With most of Europe and the rest of the world taking action and vying to proceed with a Mutant Registration Initiative, eyes are turning to the United States.

The United States has yet to officially propose a Mutant Registration Bill, although some are already calling for just that. Also in related news the Olympic Committee has recently decided to test for the X gene in order to ensure “fair play” in Events, and this has this reporter thinking. “Fair Play” those two little words with so much meaning. So I went about talking with Major Corporations as well as several Senators with mixed reactions. No one wanted to go on record with any official statement, implying that this too volatile a situation for direct comment. Though the sentiment was very similar across the board. With many Corporate Leaders saying something along the lines of; “Of course I would hire Mutants some of them would greatly improve production. Besides I wouldn’t want to be in competition with them.” It has already become apparent that the working class is afraid for their jobs citing that “I do the job fine without powers, but I can’t compete with Mutants and their powers.”

This is not like we are just talking about really good athletes. Some of these mutants have quite extraordinary abilities. I am not denying that. Is it fair? I don’t know. This is a situation where if there are to be sides you must first pick one or the other before justifying it. I am pretty sure most people will tell you that they personally have the right to employment, but does this extend to mutants? These aren’t foreigners coming after your jobs. Mutants are in some cases your childhood friends, your neighbors, wives or husbands. Some can be dangerous but it doesn’t take powers to be dangerous.

I mentioned earlier in this broadcast that I had approached Senators. They seemed split or afraid to even approach the subject at this point but most agreed with the rest of the world looking at us it is only a matter of time before the American people call out for some form of official stance.

Matt stepped into the room looking everything over and stopping on the painting. "Alice and Wonderland? The tea might be important." While Heidi checked the note, he tested the teapot on the table. It was hot to the touch even through his gloved hand.
Someone had to have just heated this; also what were those footsteps we heard downstairs.

Daniela entered carrying Ronnie. "Thought I said to protect the princess. What happened? Were you attacked downstairs? Guess that can wait. Meanwhile, if anyone knows morse code that stitch work on the chairs might give us a clue. I recognize it, but admittedly no one seemed to use it anymore so I never learned how to read it."

The sweet scent of perfume was getting stronger. Matt stopped, suddenly searching the room. There were no potpourri, nor candles. He frantically sniffed around the rooms smelling at vents. It seemed to be coming from the chairs around the tables. Tossing them aside he exposed jetted vents. The smell increased significantly and Matt's head felt heavy. Having taken a full blast to the face from the jets. An audible hiss could now be heard from the exposed jets.
"Well that was stupid, sorry."

Stumbling to get up he crawled toward the boarded windows. The more he moved the more tired he felt. When he got to the window. The sweet scented gas had all but taken hold. Matt’s fisted hand barely even made a noise as he tried to beat at the boards.

A startled look of bewilderment crossed Charles’ face. She can not possibly think that we are at the Institute. Well sarcasm is one thing I am familiar with.

“We are in a mall, Professor. Are you feeling well?” There was feigned concern on his voice. Yet, as soon as the words were out of his mouth he regretted them. He faltered but the briefest of seconds before continuing in a calmer tone. “I am sorry that we are not in those much more desirable locations at this particular moment, but you see I was bored. Not to mention, that as you were the only person in your class to watch me leave yesterday; I surmised you somehow knew it was me that played the prank on the class. Leading me to the logical deduction that I was already in trouble and could not make it any worse. So I delayed in an effort to discover how a person of my age should dress and act if attempting to... fit in” Those last two words seemed almost foriegn on his tongue.

Emboldened by the day and without any apparent care for his well being he went on. “You have placed me in basic level classes, which are for the most part beneath me. No offense intended, but why am I even in your chemistry class when I have the equivalent study of a doctorate in chemistry? The only reasoning I could ascertain is that you needed a base sampling. Which, now that I have said it, makes sense and I am sorry for ruining your sample. That was obviously malicious on my part and you should rush us back to school immediately for summary action.”

Charles knew that should raise an ire in even the hardest of Professors. He only hoped it gave Aya time to come up with something less offensive.

Why am I so willing to fall on the sword here? He could not explain his actions even to himself but if it bought time for Aya he hoped it worked.

Matt stood there watching as Heidi headed down the hallway looking for a way up. He listened as Ronnie ranted. Finally, he had enough.
"Useless, what makes me useless? You know what...no...you can hide behind your false bravado and discover for yourself the weakness of that defense or you can actually try to be helpfull. At this point your best use is bait. So keep yelling at the people who are trying to actually do something. Hey Daniela try to keep the princess alive please." He started to follow after Heidi. "Oh and if you're saying I am useless because I lack an offensive ability that's not everything about me, but what does that make you who won't even try?"
With one gloved hand on a wall he followed after Heidi, hoping that a way up was in this direction. He frowned as the sound of something upstairs seemed to head toward the other hallway. Most stairs are near exits. I hope there is a way up this way. It would look foolish if we had to backtrack.

“Charles...Charles, order up” The barista called out, setting a large caramel latte on the counter.

Letting out a sigh, Charles went to retrieve his drink. There had been few people of his age to watch and unless he wished to dress like he was twice his age these observations were useless. Although he had noticed a uniformity to the dishevelled look of the few kids he had witnessed. Almost as if they purposely and meticulously had intended to look like they did not care. The detailed form of their hair, as well as the cleanliness of their clothes gave away the fact that it was intentional.

Returning to his seat; latte and double chocolate muffin in hand, he noticed the girl from school had not moved in a while and appeared almost asleep. Concerned he decided to do a focused sensing to make sure she was alright. He could see a slow, slightly unsteady flow of oxygen and carbon dioxide indicating that she was in fact breathing. He also picked up on dried salt trails down her cheeks. She had been crying at some point. He noticed the faintest hint of make-up with the appropriate amount of chemicals to render it waterproof. Resisting a sudden urge to delve deeper he stopped sensing but not observing. She was approximately just under five feet in height, though it was hard to tell with her sitting down, and she had dark brown hair framing her lightly freckled face. Her eyes were closed, he wondered why he wanted to see them. She was about the same age as himself and he was becoming aware of that fact. Feeling self-conscious he returned his gaze to looking outside. Remembering his latte he took a sip.

After a short while he heard paper rustling from her table and resisted the urge to look over. When he finally did look over again she was once more stoic with her eyes closed. She was writing something down in a notebook. Her face gave expressions of pain and anger. He wanted to help her but realised he had no idea what she was going through.

Her eyes finally opened, black and motionless. She stared straight ahead of her without seeing. Her face reminded Charles of when someone who was so deep in thought they could not see what they were looking at. Slowly she started to move and Charles once more looked away. It would be a fine mess if she knew I had been staring at her. Overtly staring at his empty cup. When did I finish that? he wondered.

A voice soft, frightened, and right beside him, stirred him to look up. “Are you following me?”

Turning his head to face her and looking straight into her eyes was too much, so he focused on her nose and answered her directly. ”No. Actually, I was bored at school and did not feel like faceing Professor Everose after the prank I pulled in her class yesterday. So I decided to test my new found freedom and conduct a social experiment of sorts.” He went on not giving her a chance to respond. ”You see I have been sheltered all my life and everything is basically new to me. I needed new clothes and in all the movies and television shows I have watched malls and coffee shops are always crowded with people. So, I figured I could get a good sampling of what to wear or how to act. That is not the case. I recognised you from school and noticed you looked troubled but I did not know how to approach you or even if I could help. Honestly, at this point I was hoping you would approach me. I need some help here. I do not understand the first thing of what I am doing and having someone to talk with would help.” Whether he intended that line as a question or a statement, he gave no clue. In fact his whole conversational tone could have been taken as a statement.

Matt watched as everyone came into the room. Daniela hurt the wolf but it seemed to at least partially repair itself. From what Heidi had said Jasper could do some remote computer stuff. I can only hope whatever she did worked. Heidi is still hard to figure out but she seemed to be observing everything. Then there is the other one who's name I never heard. Heidi asked her something about controlling paper but she replied that she had only done it once. Come to think of it she did look like that girl from the "Paper Tantrum" video on Youtube. Matt doubted that was the original video but it was the one he recalled.
Quickly looking around the room Matt tried the light switches but they seemed to do nothing. He left them on and tried the television sets. Even if they did come on, if there was no signal they might provide a faint glow once the doors were shut. The Exit sign over the left hallway suggested another way into the building. Matt pulled a coffee table over in front of it. "If you cannot stop your enemy, slow them down. Don't know who said it, but it seemed relevant. To be honest if that robot thing comes this way I don't think that will slow it down much, but it will make some noise."
What was that the paper girl almost did? Did she know she was doing it or did the papers react to her without her knowing?

Looking at Ronnie."Actually, I think you almost did something out there. The paper in your notebook ruffled briefly. I don't know if it was from fear or anger but it's a start. Strength can come from recognizing your fear; or something like that, I think that one was Budha. Anyway it seems that this scenario may have been catered to us. You may have to use your ability sooner or later. It's best we work as a team from here on out." Making sure Heidi could see him, Matt went on. "Heidi has at least an idea of our abilities if not more than we realise. She should coordinate unless we plan on continuing blindly." His voice gave no hint of comfort or disparagement. His comments simply were as if fact. Matts face gave one a sense of focused calm.

Matt looked down the right hand hallway eager to be moving on. After that last door, he had no intention of opening the next door.
