Gotcha. So, it's less like fables that're given life by virtue of being told on Earth, and more like two parallel worlds that're linked by one world's storytelling matching up with the beings of the other world?

The idea I'd been tinkering with was a Rumpelstiltskin variant where the miller's daughter is a cruel sorcerer-queen who can weave enchanted gold out of straw, and she uses it to dominate the surrounding provinces. Rumplestiltskin is an imp from the elflands who goes off one day to challenge her and end her reign of terror. He and the sorcerer-queen have a terrible duel that lasts for three days and three nights, and each night, the sorcerer is able to steal a name of power from the imp. By the third night of fighting, the sorcerer has obtained the last and most powerful name, and the imp is now nameless—essentially, the sorcerer wins. But by stealing his names the sorcerer is forced to see the world now through his eyes, unclouded by her own malice and cruelty. She can't bear it and tries to return the names, but the imp, somewhere during that last night of fighting, has vanished, or maybe been misplaced, and the story basically ends with those three names stuck to her for the rest of her life. Drastic differences in how the story gets told comes from the queen basically having her entire worldview torn apart and remade. Different variants of the story include the traditional Rumpelstiltskin version, plus all the variants that go into what happened to the queen in her days after the duel. Would that be salvageable, or does it deviate too much from the base story? (I was hoping to play as the Queen, post-name stealing)

Pretty much, there's the "real world" and The Homelands. When a Tale begins and ends it somehow finds it's way to the world of man, through an idea or something of that nature. The mortal world then interpretes the Tale in their own way.

I'd say that particular story sounds fine, Rumplestiltskin is a little more obscure than your Cinderellas so I can buy the regular Tale being much different to its real world counterpart
If I wanted to join (if this is still open) would it be possible to create your own short fairy tale to base your character on? I had an idea for a sort of modified version of the Rumplestiltskin story, but I was wondering how much wiggle room an alternative interpretations can be given? Also, are there multiple Tales based on the same character, altered based on different unique interpretations? Since constant retelling and reinterpretation is such an integral part of a fairy tale, and there might be huge differences between, say, the original Little Mermaid and the Disney Little Mermaid interpretation.

Hey man, thanks for checking us out.

Essentially you have quite a bit of room for interpreting your Tale's story, whilst you can't make your very own original story and accompanying Tale you are given the choice to and encouraged to make a unique spin on your characters' story. I'd say my only "rule" is that major events that shape your Tale are to be kept, Tiny Tim will always have a bad leg just as a hypothetical, you're mostly giving the how and why as well as making your own shaping events. Also no there aren't multiple versions of the same Tale, there's one Tale and their true story, the rest is how it's presented and interpreted by the world of mortals where they may get details wrong or embellish certain aspects
I was asked by an anonymous source to review the posting order. @Drag, are you still out celebrating your mortality :P? Always remember that it's cheaper to get drunk at home than at a pub, even if the decor is nice

It's cheaper but from personal experience it's a great deal more depressing. I'll get a post up when I'm back from college
Question: Alice in Wonderland...Fairy tale or nah? I personally don't consider it one, but I dunno. Would that count in this or no? Either way, I am confirming my interest in Beauty/Belle

I mean, it was in Kingdom Hearts which I consider a point in its favor. Personally I'd say it's tale enough for the story but that's just me
@Drag Actually, quick question, how much control do we have over who our characters were back in their respective Homelands? And, after re-reading the original post, it looks not everyone decided to participate in the Great Exodus. Is that true? I only ask because it's a fairly important part of the backstory I'm working on for Boogey.

Quite a bit control wise, though your character's Tale should *loosely* follow the series of events. it can happen in various different ways and there's room for stuff to happen after their story is "done"

The Great Exodus took pretty much every Tale to the "real world", leaving The Homelands more or less a barren wasteland, there's just some Tales who believe things were better off back there and value tradition more than anything else, if there's stuff you wanna hash out for your backstory though then feel free to drop me and/or Cross a dm
Teamwork makes the dream work, that's for sure. Really excited about this. I have a pretty unique idea for how the Boogeyman will work in this setting.

Hopefully I'll have my college stuff sorted and we can power through the main page of the rp, sign up sheet is more or less done so with any luck we could have the rp up tonight or tomorrow
@Holy Soldier Thank you! Though it was mostly Drag's idea. I just brainstormed with them and helped them out with some of the writing.

tbf it was largely a team effort, I'd have for sure given up before this point if I was on my own
So this is inspired by Fables yes? So if we make a character it doesn't have to follow how Fables has them?

Just wondering, this has gained my interest. In terms of characters I'd like to play Beauty/Belle if possible. Either her or Rapunzel. I got some interesting ideas for both.

Absolutely, Beauty/Belle are open as is Rapunzel
The majority of the Tales seem to be coming from the Brothers Grimm and other Germanic sources, but will you allow those from other countries? I'm considering joining as Baba Yaga.

Edit: Aaaaand apparently she's dead in the comics. Never mind. Back to the drawing board.

It's not a Fables rp it's just inspired by it so Baba Yaga is fair game
They had a few urban legends in the Wolf Among us.
So they're allowed here too, yes?

Yep, this isn't directly related to TWAU but it loosely follows some of the rules. Folklore and urban legends like Bloody Mary, Jersey Devil etc are fair game
